Default 'Good Omens' by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (Sa13+) [SPOILERS]

Welcome to The Book Seekers' first Book of the Month discussion! If you don't know what Book of the Month is, there's more information here, but in a nutshell it is a monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here.

As you can see, this month we're reading Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett!

Age Rating | Sa13+
Genre | Fantasy
Summary from Goodreads | According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist...

Let's go over some ground rules...
  • All Book Club Rules and SnitchSeeker Board Rules apply in this forum.
  • You can discuss ANYTHING that is related to Good Omens in here. However, it must be kept SPOILER FREE until July 15th. Any spoiler-y things must be put under a spoiler tag. Remember that other people might not have read as far along as you.
    • Any posts that contain spoilers (that aren't under spoiler tags) will be edited by a Book Club mod.
  • On July 15th, a more structured discussion will start. At this point, spoilers WILL be allowed. This discussion will continue (officially) until August 11th. That being said, the thread will remain open for everyone to discuss the book after the main discussion is over.

There's more? There is! While we're reading and discussing Good Omens, there are other related things that you can get involved with.
  • Feeling inspired? Contribute some Good Omens fanart to our new Bookish Fan Art thread.
  • If you're feeling really, really inspired, you could try your hand at designing an alternative pair of book covers for Good Omens. You can use whichever medium you want. It can be inspired by the TV adaptation. Post them in this thread and/or the Bookish Fan Art thread.
  • Submit Good Omens related posts to our Tumblr!

If you have issues or queries, contact Harron Peasley, natekka or Stormdancer – and don't forget that you can still nominate books for future Book of the Months!
Ready, Set, Read!

Hi, friends! I am VERY excited that we're reading this book this month, as it's one of my all time favorites. I absolutely recommend the new Amazon Prime series based on the book, but read the book first. I promise you that it makes a difference.

So that being said, part of me feels like I should talk everyone into reading this book, but I guess I don't have to since you're already here. JUST read this very funny, witty, clever book and then come talk to me about it. I will be literally waiting right here.

I just bought the kindle version because the print wouldn’t be in until late July and I didn’t want to wait. I’m about to start it tomorrow and enjoy some fun reading by the pool I think to get a head start on this. I really can’t wait to begin discussions on this topic with you as I started the first episode of the show but decided reading the book first might be the best idea.

Can’t wait!

I think it's allowed to watch the show FIRST. Just so long as you read it

I know this book is full of quotable quips, so I'm hoping I see people drop some of their favorite lines.

You think I wouldn't read it?!

Ooooh, yes. That's actually going to be part of the discussion, so I highly recommend people make a note of their favourite quotes from the book.

I honestly believe Az and Crowley are an iconic friendship. And if you didn't chuckle at Crowley's bio stating "an angel who did not so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards" then we can't be friends.

I can't agree more. There's something wonderful about the way they bring out the very good and the very bad in one another.

Whether you consider the two to be happily in love or platonic life partners, we can all agree it's a wonderfully written relationship.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

I bought this amazing book about two weeks ago after watching the show yet again and I thoroughly recommend it. The way it is written is very entertaining and it caters to my sense of humour.
SPOILER!!: Spoilers!
The little notes are a particular delight especially the one about Christmas when Adam was a little boy.

Aziraphale and Crowley's dynamic with each other is really special. I think they complement each other and bring something to the dynamic of the other.

I. Love. That. Line.

It was one of the first - if not the first - line I highlighted in the book!

I have a question for you allllllllll, as a sort of warm up for the 'official' discussion we're going to have.

Have you read any other books written by Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett? Or is Good Omens your first?

I've read a LOT of Gaiman and only a little of Pratchett. My favorite Gaiman book is Neverwhere, followed closely by Stardust. I like everything of his that I've read, although his sense of the macabre is stronger in some of his works and I get unsettled.

For Pratchett, I know I liked Hogfather, especially Death's granddaughter Susan.

I am too sick to enjoy this book as much as I feel like I should, like maybe because I'm super crotchety and ill but it feels too edgy and clever for me right now in my flu-addled state which is annoying because I KNOW its up my alley

It is FUN though and I did like the saunter vaguely downwards thing too tbh.

My fave Terry Pratchett stuff is actually the discworld GAMES, they're so awesome. You can find longplays of them on youtube actually and they're entertaining to watch if you're nerd enough. Amazing tbh. Actually gonna put the first game on as background right now hah.

My fave Neil Gaiman work is actually MirrorMask

I haven’t had as much time to properly read the book as I’m studying for an exam. But when I give myself a moment to read and enjoy a book I’ve been laughing so hard and enjoying the writing.

The first book I picked up by Gaiman was American Gods. I liked it a lot. But I feel like in today’s culture and such some of the things may very well go over younger kids heads. Like my niece has never seen a pay phone so she wouldn’t get that but that’s one that I loved. Have to finish the tail end of that some day XD

Most of those books, I have heard of. I've actually been meaning to read American Gods. Hmm.

But, enough about that for now...

IT'S TIME TO START OUR DIIIIIIIISCUSSION.

We're going to start simple. What were your overall feelings after reading the book? Did it surprise you? Was it what you expected it to be? Or what are your feelings so far if you haven't finished it yet? If that's the case, just be aware that spoilers won't be hidden in here anymore, m'kay? <3

I'm only about half way through, although I've read it a few times before. I have to keep myself from speeding through the book and missing how clever it is, because I tend to gulp books down and skip things unintentionally. I've already realized that I never spotted Elvis as the burger place in Des Moines until this time around.

I really love the characters in this book, even though I don't feel like they spend a ton of time on them. I think it's more about how they fit into the overall structure that makes it work so well.

So far I really love the banter and funny comments. Sometimes I do find it hard to pick up what they’re putting down when it switches to someone fandoms perspective. But I’m ready to dive in more after my exam even though we’ll likely be done with the discussions.

I hope everyone is enjoying Good Omens! How far through are you all? I finished a few days ago and I can't wait for this discussion to start POPPIN'. SO, new question, which you can answer even if you haven't finished yet: What are some of your favourite quotes from the book?

Ah, yes! I reckon a second (and third, fourth, fifth) read would be good for me, too. I often skim read to get to dialogue. *HIDES* I'm trying to do it less. It makes me end up reading slowly because I end up trying to go back and read the descriptions more slowly.

I completely agree! I loved so many of the characters, which is always good when reading multiple POV books.

The banter is amazing, right??

POVs is definitely something we can all discuss because I think it deeply impacts how well the book reads. Sometimes I liked it, sometimes it wasn't as great. I think it depends on the characters.

I hope your exam goes (or has gone) well! I'll pop in to discuss no matter when you finish.
