Default 'A Man Called Ove' by Fredrik Backman (Sa16+) [SPOILERS]

Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Moment for January and February 2021! If you don't know what Book of the Moment is, there's more information here but, in a nutshell, it is a bi-monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here. The first month is focused on reading the book, the second is focused on discussing it. This discussion will be active until February 28th.

Our current Book of the Moment is... A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman!

Age Rating | Sa16+
Genre | Contemporary
Summary from Goodreads | A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

SPOILER!!: content warnings!

  • This discussion will be active until February 28th. That being said, the thread will remain open for everyone to discuss the book after that time, too.

There's more? There is! While we're reading and discussing A Man Called Ove, there are other related things that you can get involved with.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

I've been wanting to read this book for some time now cause i heard good things about it but i always put it off cause its contemporary and its one of the genres that is out of my comfort zone

So this is the PERFECT opportunity for me to read this book and participate in a BoTM and at the same time cross out Bravery in the reading challenge

in Goodreads, they put A Man Called Ove in Humor genre. So does this mean I can use this book for Wit prompt, right?

As I haven't read it yet, I can't comment on whether it's witty/humorous. Buuuuut if it is, then yes, you could definitely use it for that prompt!

It's definitely got its moments, but I don't know if I'd classify it as straight up humor but also FUNNY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER ??? i think??? what's that saying about relativity? how does that go again?

Idk but I like funny is in the eye of the beholder. But yes, if you read it and you find it humorous, you can use it for the prompt, regardless of what anyone else thinks! Humour is subjective.

ALSO, I just reached the end of chapter four and *hops into a spoiler tab*

SPOILER!!: hello very spoilery here
First of all, HOW DARE THIS BOOK.

Second of all, HOW DARE IT!!!

MY FEELS.

Apparently A Man Called Ove is available on Scribd in e-book and audiobook. I tried to listen the audiobook when I was on the train and just passed the first chapter.

Then I just discovered how to pronounce Ove. It's Oo-vuh not O-vee or O-veh

I'm about to start Chapter 10 and I'm really enjoying it so far! I have a journal that I write in while I'm reading (this is a very new thing for me but it's been great, I really recommend it!) and I've written about 7 quotes down so far.

I don't really enjoy the audiobook sadly, something with the narrator that kinda makes it... Not really enjoyable so I started reading the paperback I owned and I'm already on chapter 10. Ove kinda has a similar vibe as Carl Fredericksen from Pixar's Up.

and speaking of pronunciation, that's how I pronounce my name

Glad I'm not alone! And I'm also kind of amused but not surprised (ahem, who said that?) that you've been pronouncing wrong for however long hahah

Ulfa, you pronounce your name more like O-vah or Oov-a? *confused* Thank you for cluing us in because I was no doubt mentally pronouncing your name wrong in addition to saying Ove like Ohhhveee for sure.

I CAN'T WAIT TO CLICK ON Y'ALLS SPOILER TABS.

Reading this really really makes me want to go to an Ikea. AND also, I wonder why the translator changed kph to mph (don't they use kilometers in Sweden?) but didn't make other translation choices like changing kronor to dollars or when he describes the Lanky One's height as being obnoxiously over six feet. Why bother to make the change? Just leave it metric. I love the metric system.

BUT ANYWAY LIKE I WAS SAYING.... I love this book and I've barely gotten started (about 10% done?). I have to say, I do think it's a little predicatable, but that doesn't make me enjoy it any less, because I adore the narration and Ove reminds me a bit of my dad and the various other curmudgeons in my life.

I have been listening to this book and it is the sweetest story. At first I wasn't sure, but I just love it and the humor is so fun as well. I won't do spoilers until I'm fully finished, but I have been reading all of yours and I can fully agree with everything being said. I have felt so many different emotions and have come attached to a few of the characters.

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

I finished this book last week, but didn't want to double post so I was waiting!!

I loved, loved, loved this book. It was not something I would have just picked up on my own so I am so glad I got the chance to read it. This book really reminds me of my neighbors growing up. On both sides of me I had two elderly women. One had children and grandchildren, but my dad did so much for her and we were always helping her. The other neighbor had one son who moved far away years ago. So we were her family, she was like another grandma to me. This book really hit those feelings.

SPOILER!!: oh the chapters

Where to begin....

When I first started reading this book, I was laughing and thought man how did they get a full book from a grouch. I wasn't sure how well I was going to like it, but then the gleam of his goodness that caught my attention. I love the jumping back and forth and I cried so many times with his younger stories. Losing both parents by the age of 16 and then filling his dad's shoes working. Just so much was placed in there to know what type of person Ove was.

When finding out that the wife had passed so incredibly sad, but the length the author took to explain all the pieces kept me reading and wanting to know. I do agree some was predictable, but it is done in such a heart warming way that I did not mind at all.

When he was attempting to end his life I started seeing the interactions of the neighbors and started just getting so excited knowing the change in his needing something to live for was happening. The cat was one of my favorite parts, I saw someone in a review get so mad about the cat and said it wasn't realistic, but I loved it because it was like a sign from his wife every time and I love that sort of stuff.

The way he was with the teenage boys was one of my favorite parts. So many people classify certain age groups into one way of thinking and this book really to me showed that even if he doesn't have the most up to date language of talking he still didn't shun either of them for who they were, but how they acted as a person. He took them in and taught them without judgement of their likes or dislikes (thought the cars was so funny).

When he went after the ones breaking into the shed I got so emotional, because I was like this is how it will end after his life got so much better and he got the family his wife always wanted.

I listened to the book, so I think I might have missed it, but did they ever say the name of the little boy? I went back twice and still think I missed it with distractions.

The end and his will had me crying again. It was sweet and just showed how much growth truly happened in this book.

I just want to announce that I ruined my entire sleep schedule for this week in a desperate attempt to finish this book late Saturday night/into Sunday morning because it was expiring from my e-reading account at 10:38 am and I knew I'd need like four hours to read it, so. ;______________; I did finish it at the start of this week and am just now getting around to delivering my thots.

I really liked it.

SPOILER!!: My Goodreads Review
I feel like the Grinch at the end of his movie, as my heart grew three sizes over the course of a Man Called Ove.

This is a tremendously moving novel with wonderfully sardonic narration. Although many of the “twists” and dramatic “reveals” were predictable to me, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who still didn't connect with this ode to the strangest suburban superhero ever encountered. Ove is truly a curmudgeon in all ways and even though I can relate to that SO much, I suppose ultimately I’ve proven myself a softie as I poured out (at least) one (1) tear for Granddad in the end.

I love this book and I want everyone to read it. It’s hard to believe that I already read my favorite book of 2021 but here I am at half-past seven in the morning, brushing the snow off myself as I head out to do an inspection, kick a few tires in my neighborhood, maybe tighten some screws, and putter around my shed.

Also, Ali, I agree that that nasty review about the cat is just wrong. Probably written for attention. I mean, tag urself, I'm Cat Annoyance. If I ever own another cat, I'm naming it that.

also ALSO, I already asked my department chair if I could teach it, as it counts for European Lit and that's one of my jams.

I had a couple other thoughts to float by ya'll?

SPOILER!!: Ove Thoughts
What Hogwarts House would you put Ove in?

Did you guys know Saab went out of business right around the time this book was published?! I remembered that when reading, looked it up, and couldn't decide if this news would have killed Ove before he died of old age or....

Anybody else want to reread this book? Like right away? Or just me?

SPOILER!!: Re: Roro's Ove Thoughts

I'd sort Ove into Hufflepuff! At first I was simply thinking about the depths of his heart ;-; he comes off so grouchy, but MAN. Ove bleeds for those around him (even though I think he doesn't see it himself). But then there's also the way he so deeply values JUSTICE and FAIRNESS. In particular, I was thinking about his adherence to the rules (like the parking & driving nonsense we see at the very beginning lmao). Or that time when he returned the stolen wallet.

Another notable hufflepuff moment was when Tom stole the money and Ove didn't rat him out because ďIím not the sort that tells tales about what other people do." ;-; bless him.

He's also SO hardworking & dedicated!!!!!!! Never took a sick day, worked all his shifts and covered for others when they asked him to. UGH. There's so much good Hufflepuff in this man and that's just scratching the surface.

Also in regard to rereading this book? Like right away?
LOL. Literally me. I read it mid-2020??? And a couple months later I found it at a thrift store and nominated it as BoTM just so I could read it again and force everyone else to read it with me so, uh, yes. Yes, I do. I want to read it a third time now and I haven't even finished this second read through yet.
