Mini Challenges

https://s20.postimg.cc/z1ot7kmst/minichallenges.png

What exactly is a mini challenge?

Mini challenges are extra prompts that you may use IN PLACE of any one of the prompts in your list for the SS100 and/or SS50 challenges. These are meant to help stretch your writing skills and provide additional inspiration - don't stress about them! The most important thing is that you have fun! If you're looking for even more ways to challenge yourself outside of the SS25/50/100 and the EEFD, be sure to check out the various games in the Chocolate Frog Corner too!

» about the mini challenges
They do not expire and can be completed any time.

The first post of your thread may NOT be a mini challenge.

You may only use each mini challenge once per SS100/SS50 thread.

You may use up to five mini challenges or ten mini challenges in your SS50 or SS100 thread, respectively.

You do not in any way HAVE to use any of the mini challenges in your thread(s). They are only there to offer you an additional resource for you to use from time to time with your writing.

You do NOT need to post anywhere that you have replaced a prompt. Simply strikeout the prompt from your list and write beside it the title of the mini challenge that you have selected.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Make your drabble speak of Christmas!
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

You haven't happened upon this mini challenge by some stroke of luck, but more of a string of fate. The challenge calls to you asking, no, begging you to write using it for writing in second person means that you will join in the ranks of such famous authors as Michel Butor, Marguerite Duras, Carlos Fuentes, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Georges Perec, Jay McInerney, William Faulkner, Günter Grass, Italo Calvino, Nuruddin Farah, Jan Kjærstad and many others!

"Cheers," whispered George, wiping tears of laughter from his face.
"Oh, I hope she tries Vanishing them next...they multiply by ten every time you try..."

Time for you to let your inner Gred and Feorge loose on the world! Oh, and have no fear, Harry has not been turned into a rabbit. At least not permanently...

Ever felt like your character or your inner [insert canon character here] was just dying to burst out of your writing and squirt you with pumpkin juice? Well, maybe not pumpkin juice, but we all know how characters take on a life of their own, so why not give them the chance to do so in your drabble?!

The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings.

This challenge was first posted in celebration of a new school term in the SS Hogwarts RPG, but new beginnings are all around us! Whether your character is starting a new term, a budding relationship, or learning how to tie their shoes, all new beginnings are important milestones!

Halloween
Lots of fun lots of screaming
Come and join the party
That comes just once a year

Halloween
Look around - you're not dreaming
Come to the party
It's a ooky spooky Halloween!

Has your character had an especially memorable Halloween? Funny costume? Super scary moment? Maybe there's even a ghost story to tell! In honor of the upcoming holiday, the seventh mini-challenge is to incorporate Halloween into a drabble!

mini challenge eight - Find the Snowman

Where do Snowmen go to dance?
To snowballs!

Your drabble must contain a snowman. It doesn't matter if the snowman is spotlit, part of a description, or just mentioned in passing - as long as a reader can find one in your drabble, you've triumphed over this challenge!

The greatest treasures are those invisible to the eye but found by the heart.

Emotions? Love? Breakups? Chocolate hearts? Heart-shaped candy? YOU and your story get to decide. To complete this mini-challenge, your story should feature something that relates to... a heart.

original challenge posted by Maxilocks
If you give a wizard a cookie...he will ask for a glass of milk...

Everyone loves cookies. Does the character you're drabbling have a love for them, too? Perhaps a favourite cookie recipe? Or a cookie memory that just has to be shared? Or even cookies being mentioned in passing.

mini challenge eleven - Hop into Spring

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"

Springtime means trees and flowers and blossoms, and represents joy and hope and a heap of things bright and beautiful even mandrakes. It is also a favorite season for Herbology Professors! In your next drabble, slip in this amazing season. It could be in the form of spring cleaning, a springtime party, a springtime memory, or even a passing mention of the season of flowers.

Let's hop into spring!

"Just relax! That's like saying there's only one flavour of ice-cream for you. Let me tell you something, there's lots of flavours out there. There's rocky road, cookie dough and bing! Cherry vanilla. You can get them with jimmies or nuts, or whipped cream. Welcome back to the world, grab a spoon!"

Slip this delicious treat into one of your drabbles. It could be mentioned in passing, the focus of the drabble, or a simple account of a character's favourite flavour.

sweetpinkpixie 10-07-2011 01:38 AM

mini challenge thirteen - Breezy

"Easy, breezy, and beautiful!"

Whether you are a Cover Girl or just sitting on a dock and feeling the salty air of the ocean, breezy is definitely a fun word to play around with! Perhaps your drabble could take you to the sea or your character is feeling especially carefree?

Be creative and enjoy!

mini challenge fourteen - Pumpkinageddon

mini challenge fourteen
https://i.postimg.cc/PJMhxdN8/Pumpkinageddon.jpg
Giant pumpkins are hurtling towards earth. Is earth doomed or will our hero be "Smashing Pumpkins"?

Okay, so maybe there are no giant pumpkins hurtling towards earth, but that doesn't mean that there COULD be in your drabble! Whether you are talking about your character's love of pumpkin juice and pumpkin pie or carving a jack-o-lantern, be sure to your writing is inspired by that beloved orange squash.

Remember, a pumpkin by any other name is still a pumpkin.

mini challenge fifteen - catch a falling star

mini challenge fifteen

...and put it in your pocket.
Never let it fade away.

Whether figuratively or literally, allow your characters in your next drabble to catch a falling star! They can put it in their pocket if they so desire, but that is not required. What IS required is that you include the line "catch a falling star" in your writing. Changing the tense of the words is allowed.

sweetpinkpixie 12-31-2011 05:14 PM

mini challenge sixteen - don't tickle the dragon

mini challenge sixteen

Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus

In honor of 2012 being the year of the dragon, your Gringotts goblins thought it would be best to honor this magical creature. Just like the falling star mini challenge you MUST use “If you can't take the heat, don't tickle the dragon” in your writing.

Good luck and Happy New Year SnitchSeekers!

mini challenge seventeen - a decade of magic

mini challenge seventeen
https://i.postimg.cc/KvyR8Yp4/decade.jpg
"It is fun to be in the same decade with you."

Will M. Cook once said, "Nothing could stop us, and nothing did for a decade." No words have ever been more true. For the past 10 years we have all grown up with the world of Harry Potter and countless numbers of its fans have gathered in one place: SnitchSeeker. This year, SnitchSeeker is turning 10 and to celebrate the Gringotts goblins invite you to celebrate this decade of magic with your writing! What to you need to do? It's easy as 8, 9, 10! Simply include the word "decade" in your writing!

special thanks to Tegz for inspiring this mini challenge
"When I'm inspired, I get excited because I can't wait to see what I'll come up with next."

We each draw inspiration from different places. Some of us are more inspired by color. Others shape or overall design. Then there are some of us who become inspired based on a feeling or a memory invoked when we look at something. So what is is for you? What inspires you?

For this mini challenge you will be given a picture which your drabble should be inspired from. How it is inspired is entirely up to you! Is it the color? An object with in the image itself? Is your character actually IN the picture somewhere? The possibilities are endless!

sweetpinkpixie 07-29-2012 08:54 AM

mini challenge nineteen - you're a Firework

mini challenge nineteen
https://i.postimg.cc/ncZhtPMD/firework.jpg
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like Dr. Filibuster's Fabulous Wet-Start, No-Heat Fireworks

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh, oh, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Make your drabble burst with excitement by including this explosive delight! It could be mentioned in passing, the focus of the drabble, or a perhaps your character attempting to follow in the footsteps of the Weasley Twins themselves by chasing out their least favorite professor!

sweetpinkpixie 08-05-2012 01:40 AM

mini challenge twenty - Go for the Gold

mini challenge twenty

all that glitters is gold
only shooting stars break the mold

In honor of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Gringotts has decided to open its vaults and challenge your drabbles to Go for the Gold! Yes, the goblins have decided to be a little generous and allow you to walk away with some Gringotts gold as long as you make your writing golden!

You can mention gold in passing or have it be the focus of the drabble. It is all up to you!

mini challenge twenty-one - Haunting Hogwarts

“Oh, very good,' interrupted Snape, his lip curling. 'Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. 'Ghosts are transparent.”

Happy Halloween 2012 SnitchSeekers! Many ghosts make Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry their home and this mini challenge is in their honor! Whether your character is having a conversation with Sir Nicholas, brewing polyjuice potion in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, or simply being terrorized by Peeves (yes, even poltergeists get some love this Halloween), be sure to mention one of these haunting spirits in your drabble!

Some canon spirits to consider:
  • Bloody Baron
  • Professor Cuthbert Binns
  • Fat Friar
  • Helena Ravenclaw (a.k.a. the Grey Lady)
  • Moaning Myrtle
  • Cavalier
  • Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington (a.k.a. Nearly Headless Nick)
  • Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore
  • Edgar Clogg
  • Wailing Widow of Kent
  • Peeves

"Ask us no questions and we'll tell you no lies..."

Originally a part of the 2012 Days of Potter, I was asked to bring this little mini challenge over to the Challenge Area for you all to use on your drabbles and ficlets.

We all love the Weasleys - maybe even to the point you dyed your hair red and started wearing ugly sweaters - so how about showing them some love in your writing? All you have to do is pick one of the Weasley inspired prompts from below and write!
Despite multiple options in this mini challenge, you may only replace a prompt ONCE.
Prompts ::
  • Arthur Weasley - rubber ducks
  • Molly Weasley - howler
  • Charlie Weasley - dragons
  • Percy Weasley - I'M HEAD BOY! (must use the phrase in your drabble)
  • Fred & George Weasley - canary creams
  • Ron Weasley - spiders
  • Ginny Weasey - Bat-Bogey Hex

mini challenge twenty-three - ode to Laverne de Montmorency

mini challenge twenty-three
https://i.postimg.cc/3wWwc0Nf/23banner-zps2f998c7a.jpg
"Powerful infatuations can be induced by the skilful potioneer, but never yet has anyone managed to create the truly unbreakable, eternal, unconditional attachment that alone can be called Love."
Hector Dagworth-Granger on love potions

Many a witch and wizard owe so much to love potions. Hey, without them we wouldn't have the saga of Harry Potter! So this Valentine's Day why not pay homage to the witch who invented them all, Laverne de Montmorency? Whether it is Cupid Crystals, Kissing Concoction, Beguiling Bubbles, Twilight Moonbeams, or Amortentia...let your writing's heart be "won" over by these controversial brews!
