For the first time, Juniper had bought two sets of candles for her child’s birthday. Ten in a set, but little Juan Paulo, her JP, was not so little anymore. He needed eleven candles.

As she arranged the candles around the edge of the cake, she realized the mail had not come today. No acceptance letter yet. It was an important day, she had not expected Castelobruxo to be so late with their acceptance letter. She’d have to ask her husband or sister-in-law about that after dessert and presents...Maybe Castelobruxo was simply not as prompt with their letters as Hogwarts had been.

She could still remember the excitement of waking up to her own letter, on her own eleventh birthday. And, finally school age, the first of her children was already having his own experiences. Eventually...hopefully… that letter would come, and then off to school JP would go, the other three soon to follow. She lit the candles, and smiled, carrying the cake gently into the room where her family waited.

Her son had changed majors again?

Juniper sighed and set the letter on the table, patting the delivery owl absent-mindedly. Isabella, Rafael, even Paul all seemed to like university. They talked excitedly about their plans after graduation and their classes when they came home between terms.

Not Gabriel, Junior.

One or two changes of major, Juniper could have handled. Isabella did change her major. But Gabriel was taking an eclectic set of classes, not in support of any one degree, and not getting the grades she knew he could earn. She picked up a quill, grabbed a howler, and began scribbling.
Gabriel,
Pick a major or get a job. I won’t fund your self discovery anymore.

She felt like she’d been squatting in front of this fire for hours. She needed to stand up. So she did, circling the fire slowly as she waited for the food to cook.

She heard laughter, soon followed by both of her toddlers running by. Juniper smiled, watching as Paulo and Isabella moved from chasing each other to clapping games to...wrestling. She pursed her lips, waiting for someone’s hair to be pulled or someone to start crying. It always happened eventually.

“Mama!” Isabella shrieked, breaking away from her brother and pointing. “Fire!”

Yes, she knew there was fire, she was cooking, but still Juniper turned. Yikes! She quickly pulled her wand to put out the stray flames. Yes, there was supposed to be fire. But not in the food. She wasn’t trying to flambé their dinner, just cook it. “Thank you, sweetie,” she called back to her daughter once she had the situation under control. Their food might be a little burnt, but it would be edible.

Overdue Library Book
2092
Everything was awful, including her children. Isabella was pouting, upset she was being pulled from Hogwarts to transfer to Castelobruxo, and Gabe and Rafa, the little wildlings, were acting as though nothing was amiss, no changes to their household or anything.

It was infuriating, but also...at least two of them were happy.

With her husband’s death, there really was no other way. It was back to South America for them, as soon as Juan Paulo got back from his Muggle boarding school. And that was soon, so she was packing. Theoretically, the children were meant to be helping, but with her daughter’s attitude and her sons’ incessant playfulness, she was transferring the contents of Isabella’s trunk into the appropriate boxes herself. Robes...textbooks...wait, that wasn’t a textbook. Juniper opened the cover, looking for any sort of identifying features, as she certainly hadn’t bought this book for her daughter.

Oh. Great. It was an overdue library book, from the Hogwarts library. As if this day couldn’t get any worse. Juniper sighed, set the book aside, and continued her unpacking and packing. She could owl it to the school tomorrow.
