1. Accio

Why did the transfiguration tome she wanted have to be on the top shelf?

The second year wasn’t fond of those ladders used to get up higher in the stacks than one can reach, she always had this feeling someone was just going to move it on her without her control. It had already happened once though it had been a stray spell that time. Moving the nearest one to where she needed it to be, the Gryffindor climbed up to the shelf where the book was only to find herself a bit off, reaching for the book beside her.

Just a little further….

Minerva still couldn’t reach and she was practically hanging off the ladder. She sighed when she realized she was going to have to get down and move the ladder before trying again. Reluctantly moving back down, she had briefly noticed a book floating down beside her but hadn’t registered it was the title she had been looking for until she found it being held out for her.

“You know….the summoning charm works really well with those pesky books,” the upperclassman mused as she took it, walking away laughing.

3. Braking Charm

Victory seemed so close.

Slytherin had a slight lead, but it was clear that the seekers were on the trail of the ever-elusive snitch. One grasp of the golden treasure would be more than enough to push the lions over the top. Minerva was doing her part, the young woman zooming around after the quaffle, helping pass it among her team members or shooting if she had a chance.

A roar of excitement drew attention to the seekers once more from players and crowd alike. Even Minerva’s gaze momentarily shot towards the epicenter of action. But in the confusion, one of the bludgers threatened to steal the show from. One moment she was heading back after the quaffle, the next the chaser was busy testing out her broom’s safety measures. It all turned into a blur as it became too much for the young woman, the Gryffindor 7th year blacking out into oblivion.

And Slytherin won the match.

5. Colloportus

Locked up tight.

And only the ghosts could manage to get inside.

It was like the very castle felt like no one else besides Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was worthy of the head office anymore. In some ways Minerva was grateful, the woman quite unprepared to step into his shoes permanently despite being deputy for so many years and filling in for him whenever the Board or Ministry removed him temporarily.

She couldn’t replace him.

And the office, or at least the gargoyle…seemed to know that.

Minerva was just the next person in line…cut off from the looming history of the job by the door. So she kept to he own well-worn office, no magic barring her way in judgment nor failing her from entering it all of a sudden.

“No gossipy portraits either.”

Silver lining.

7. Confundus

She looked very intent.

I found myself amused as I watched her work on her exam amongst the rest of her class. Each student in the mixed class was in various levels of anxiety, the Gryffindor one of the most attentive and seemingly concerned as to her answers. It was hardly her OWLS or NEWTS, yet the young girl leaned extra close to her test parchment, her eagle quill scribbling and scratching fervently on the page.

Minerva McGonagall.

My best student.

And judging by the grades in her other classes, my subject was by far her best in return. Which was why I was confused by the worry etching her youthful face. I had no concern she would do well, doubting even the hardest question could throw her off.

Perhaps confidence in her work was a subject she needed to master.

9. Disapparate

“Destination…Determination…Deliberation.”

The ministry worker’s voice droned on and on during the apparition lesson. The ability to transport oneself, and possibly others eventually, nearly seamlessly from one location to another within a short period of time was bloody brilliant. It was also the mark of nearing adulthood and Minerva was no less excited than the rest of her fellow students, even if she didn’t show it as much. Like right now when she was trying to not look like she was ready to collapse.

How were they supposed to be focused enough to practice it themselves if the instructor put them to sleep?

What she wouldn’t give for some tea and ginger snaps right now to give her a boost of energy.

She had to learn this!

11. Expecto Patronum

“Mirror of a person’s personality my foot.”

Her spectral companion had been a tabby cat like her animangus form for as long as she had been able to cast it. She was quite proud of it then and it gave her no less a source of comfort later on when it was used to save her life and the lives of others.

However the first time Minerva spotted a ghostly figure not her own with a prickly voice that tested her patience, she was flabbergasted.

“That toad!!”

No…they were not alike. In no way, shape or form was that true. Magic had gotten all confused this time around. Minerva almost wished she could set one cat upon the other since she couldn’t do what she actually wanted to Umbridge.

Patronus’ had a mind of their own after all….right?

13. Flagrate

Even as Filch went to retrieve the supplies to clean up the marks and the other staff dispersed, Minerva couldn’t help but let her eyes linger on the blood-red message. The letters were painted, but they might as well have been made of flames for all they cut to the quick.

Enemies of the heir beware…

The Chamber of Secrets has been opened

She hadn’t been around the last time, only Albus had and she had been trying to read her colleague since the first happenings. However, he was now out of the mix due to Malfoy. Hagrid was easier, the half-giant seemingly rattled as well by the situation. Something to look into further.

A sound caused her to pull away from her thoughts and Minerva turned, have expecting Potter and Weasley to have tried sneaking back. Alas it was nothing. And she had more pressing matters to attend to than staring at the wall.

The school was in danger.

15. Hurling Hex

What in Merlin’s beard was going on?

One moment the game was happening, and Gryffindor looked as if it finally had a chance at winning with the way Potter and the rest were playing. The next…the new seeker was flopping around like a fish out of water on his broom.

Minerva watched intently from the staff stands, debating what to do and she clearly wasn’t the only one of her colleagues. Something had to be done or see her lion tossed from his broom. The very one she had purchased.

And then as sudden as it had begun… it stopped.

17. Imperio

“Albus, you can’t seriously condone his actions!”

The Unforgivables…being taught…and DEMONSTRATED! Here at Hogwarts.

“I trust Mad-Eye not to go overboard, Minerva,” the headmaster remarked. “And no one was harmed.”

“No one was harmed?! Mr. Longbottom doesn’t need reminders of what happened to his parents. Nor Mr. Potter his own.” Granted she’d seen far more a reaction from the other lion than the Boy Who Lived.

“At ease, Minerva. It is done and it will not be repeated. Lemon drop?"

The transfiguration professor answered by turning and storming out of his office. The man could be so infuriating at times.

19. Jelly Legs

UMMPHH!

The thirteen-year-old collapsed down on the stairs after struggling the stay upright. Her legs having gone all wobbly when the stone had started to move. Such a pain! Magical stairs were one thing, but did they really have to move all on their own and catch one randomly off guard?

“Haha!! The lassie fell down!” the annoying voice of the resident poltergeist teased as he swooped in to bother her further. Minerva swung her arms to block despite her inability to do Peeves any harm.

“Aye…” she remarked, “but that doesn’t make me yer prisoner.” The Gryffindor digging to retrieve her wand to take aim at the specter.

“Feisty one…eh?” Peeves cooed with a maniacal laugh, bouncing about in dare.

Red sparks answered him, chasing the poltergeist away.

21. Langlock

It sounded like the Gryffindor Common Room with for all the loud voices that came from the classroom she was headed towards. And upon entering it only got louder, her presence as their new professor not quieting them at all.

“Quiet down please,” she instructed after clearing her throat to get their attention. A few responded, though others seemed to only ignore her. A couple of the students even appeared to do so out of spite and troublemaking. Minerva fought the urge to answer with a smart spell that gave them no option but she pulled her hand away from her wand.
Must not use magic on students.

“Anyone still speaking in 2 minutes will find themselves learning human transfiguration first hand,” she remarked just as loud and clear, leaving the threat vague. That got their attention and the room was suddenly quiet, garnering a slightly raised eyebrow from the young woman.

It wasn’t like she meant it.

They just needed to know not to tickle the dragon.

23. Levicorpus

Those two.

Minerva swore most of her grey hairs were from a certain duo of Gryffindors…and the Slytherin they loved to torment. Five years of this! And she had made the mistake of thinking they might be done for the term, given that OWLS were in full swing. But no…no. There she was casually walking through the halls when the student came racing towards her to get her attention as the nearest professor and their head of house.

“Put him DOWN…Mr. Potter!” she ordered, a scowl on her face to make sure the young man in question was well aware she meant business. And Merlin help him should he take that to mean to drop Snape where he hung upside down by his ankle. Of course, she and Slughorn would be commiserating this evening regardless, the longstanding feud a weird way of getting the Slytherin and Gryffindor heads to be the most civil to each other.

Albus probably got a kick out of that. But then again…

Misery did love company.

25. Mobilicorpus

They kept coming in.

Some on their own accord, others floating along because of unconsciousness or injury.

Or worse…death.

There were so many of them. Too many of them. Especially students that she had hoped could be spared by the dangers of the war a little while longer until the war had literally come right to the doors of the school. Minerva herself was a little worse to wear but she wasn’t letting herself show it if at all possible. She would go down with the castle if she had to, but she owed the cause her best. Including the transfigured statues currently on guard as the seize fire was in effect.

Until she was among those floating dead.

Merlin help Riddle and his forces. They attacked HER school and HER students.

They would pay.

27. Muffliato

She sat, her back to the wall, awaiting her contact. Minerva had hit a brick wall with her case, unmovable unlike the one at the Leaky, and she hoped the man had something to help bring it in a new direction.

The man in question soon weaved cautiously through the crowd to come to her table, sitting down silently, his gaze too busy flicking around to see if anyone was watching them to focus on her right away.

“You said you wanted to meet me…” she said, not using names to keep it simple and untraceable.

“And you said you needed to find the Griff…which I did.”

“Excellent…feel free to share," she pressured, her wand absently moving beneath the table as she awaited a response, casting protection around their corner. No one else needed to know.

29. Obliviate

There were times of her life Minerva would sometimes think she would very much like to forget. Moments imprinted on her mind that left scars far deeper than any physical marks that marred her skin even in old age.

The pain of having to push away her first love.
The moment she became aware 3 former students were dead…the fourth the murderer.
The shock of the loss of her friend and mentor.
The horrible aftermath of battle.

But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She HAD to remember. To forget their loss nearly erased their lives. The pain an echo of their importance to her. So, she remembered. To her dying day she remembered. And vowed it would be over her dead body that it would happen again.

31. Orchideous

“My dearest Minn---”

“Stop right there, Mr. Black,” Minerva interrupted with raised hand and eyebrow. She did not want to hear where this was going. Especially not with the nickname he was starting out with.

“But I wanted you to hear the poem I wrote for you.” Cue innocent looking fourteen year old that almost would have fooled her. Had she not had to deal with his shenanigans for the last four years.

“I do not need to hear it, and it would be best if you do not write such things.” The woman turning away from him with a shake her head.

“But professor…it’s heartfelt.” Really now…he was trying to butter her up for something. She would be checking things out after this interaction. Make sure he wasn’t a distraction for Potter’s own actions.

“Dismissed,” she ordered firmly with a sigh, grateful his footsteps were the only answer for once. However, as she finally turned back around Minerva saw a bouquet of flowers resting on her desk.

“Merlin that boy.”

33. Point Me

She was never going to get to charms class at this rate.

The moving staircase had gotten her all turned around and the corridor where she had been deposited didn’t look anywhere familiar to her. If only the castle didn’t change itself all the time, then you wouldn’t wish for a map of the place. But then everything would be staying in one place and eliminating the need for it.

Maybe just a compass to try and figure out if you were at least going in the right direction that you needed to. It wasn’t like she could follow the sun’s direction from all points of the castle. There wasn’t enough windows.

Nope, you’d still need rooms that behaved like normal non-magical rooms. Which you weren’t going to find in a wizarding school created by witches and wizards.
Think Minerva…think.
Maybe if she could get the portraits to guide her…if they were awake or listening.

Merlin help her if she was late again.

35. Quietus

It all happened so fast for Minerva.

One moment she was standing in front of Hagrid as the pink toad and her Ministry cronies were trying to arrest the half-giant for one thing or another, the whole bunch of them raising their voices as if fighting for supremacy over the situation
And the next…

The next her vision was filled with several red flashes of the stunning spells coming straight at her in the way of their target. And she felt like someone had cast quietus over the area with the way she couldn’t hear anything around her, both friend and foe.

Even as she fell to the cold, wet ground stunned from the spells, she could just about sense her colleague’s large presence above checking up on her with no sounds coming from his moving lips as she blacked out.

37. Relashio

Minerva spotted her target, but it was too close within the crowded alley. Tailing was all she could do until the opportunity presented itself to confront him. And it eventually did…for the wrong party, the dark wizard grabbing hold of a bystander and spinning to face her when he noticed his shadow. A wand held to the innocent woman’s temple in silent threat.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” she remarked, debating options with her own wand raised. His captive an effective shield from most attacks she could send his way “Let her go.” And not fight like a coward she wanted to say.

“That’s all up to you,” he sneered, casting a spell in her direction that she deflected harmlessly to the cobblestones, the witch answering with a spark of purple pushing him away from the girl. The man now free to be caught by her magical ropes that came quickly after.

“I said let her go.”

39. Septumsempra

Dear Merlin.

Severus had been loath to share all the details of the scene he found, but Mr. Malfoy had been in really bad shape. And for once she wasn’t protecting Potter. She couldn’t. Neither boy was innocent in this case, picking a duel within the bathroom with the intent of attacking each other, but even with the Slytherin head of house’s interference, his charge would be in the Hospital Wing for a bit because of him.

Whatever Mr. Potter had done had put the blond boy in danger…grave danger. Something Minerva didn’t think Harry had in him, even with the animosity they had exhibited with each other since first year. The Gryffindor half-blood orphaned by the Dark Lord and the Slytherin Pureblood whose father served him.

This was a boy whose preferred spell was the harmless disarming spell even when facing the most dangerous foe. Who cringed at the teaching of the Unforgivable Curses.

But no disarming spell would cause that much damage even with the most malicious intent.

Thank goodness it had been stopped.

41. Scourgify

ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE.

Her skeleton will lie in the Chamber forever

Ginny Weasley was safe and free from the Chamber and the Heir’s enemies had long been returned to normal due to Pomfrey’s restorative draughts, but the ominous messages were still there. No well placed Scourgify…no combined cleaning magic of all the house-elves of Hogwarts had been able to able to wash the horrid words away.

Minerva had almost considered persuading Albus to restrict access to the offensive corridor, though she supposed Myrtle’s antics in the nearby lavatory already had made it someplace to avoid. Add to it the entrance of the Chamber of Secrets and problem solved.

Still…it was a linger reminder that all could not be cleared from their past as they tried to move on to the future. A reminder that Riddle had almost won…again.

Though it took a heated battle to finally have the effect on the marred wall. The paneling obscured by the spell damage of death eater versus Order.

There…it was clean.

43. Specialis Revelio

12 Grimmauld Place

A place that just seemed to ooze darkness. It was the home of a very pureblood centric family and at least one noted death eater. And a rather nasty portrait of Sirius’ mother that loved to yell and scream whenever she was bothered.

So why were they taking up residence here? The offer was generous, and not where the other side would necessarily expect the Order of the Phoenix to have their London headquarters. But that didn’t mean Minerva was comfortable with the idea.

“Specialis Revelio!” she cast at almost everything she could find as she investigated the place with other members. None of them could be absolutely sure what dark magic was in one thing or another and she for one wasn’t taking any chances. As a headquarters it was supposed to be a safe space and they didn’t need their ‘safe space’ to attack them.

She winced as Walburga went off on Tonks….again.

Merlin help them.

45. Tarantallegra

After letting Ron go with the next song, Minerva settled in simply watching as her Gryffindors paired off to try dancing on their own, weaving slowly and cautiously to and fro around the couples as the various songs played adding little comments here and there to assist. The awkward and the graceful, the head of house paying attention to Potter given as champion he would need to lead.

Her house would set a good example.

Of course, there was also the ones taking breaks or hanging back on the chairs lining the room, including a trio of redheads, two of which seemed to be more amused than the other which wouldn’t do. She was fair if she was anything else.

“Misters Weasley…” she reprimanded the twins giving their brother a hard time. “Perhaps one of you would prefer to demonstrate the next example for us.” The woman having to fight the urge to smirk as their faces blanched at the thought only to be rescued by the end of the lesson.

Saved by the bell.

47. Twitchy-Ear Hex

“Ms. McGonagall…Ms Winchester, why don’t you demonstrate the shield spell.”

Minerva had been practicing, but she wasn’t quite sure she had gotten the knack of the shield spell. And now here she was going to have to try and protect herself with it against whatever spell her classmate decided to throw at her.

Merlin help her.

Two girls…two spells…two flashes of light from opposite directions. But she was definitely feeling her ears twitch making her groan at the feeling and the failure. She felt like an overgrown bunny rabbit.

“Maybe its just someone speaking about you,” Cynthia mused, trying to support and comfort her friend, especially after Finite Incantium wasn’t working on the ears. Except it wasn’t making her feel any better.

“Yeah, they’re all talking about the ears.”

49. Wingardium Leviosa

She had had enough, and it had come down to this. A face off with Snape that went further than just their houses’ animosity towards each other. Certainly, more than competition between their charges. He was responsible for the death of mentor and friend and the leader of the death eaters here at Hogwarts. For letting Voldemort control the school and evil harm her students.

And Potter needed the distraction.

“How dare you….” She spat, shooting off a spell that was too easily deflected. And another. And another. He was the better duelist. But Minerva didn’t give up, switching targets and whipping the very torch from the wall nearby. It’s flames swinging back and forth as she levitated it with ease.

How’s about a little fire to fight with?

Footsteps soon joined them in the corridor, announcing the presence of the other three heads of house into the fray even before their spells joined the fight.

Or friends to fight alongside you?
