Default Ministry of Magic Gala 2104

OOC: this event is set on January 11, 2104 - the SAME day as the Dragon Reservation field trip.
All Creatures employees would have been ordered to fall back and return to the Ministry
for this mandatory event

With the start of the new year comes the annual Ministry orientation event, arranged by the Department Heads; an opportunity for you to mix with your colleagues, the Ministry's brand new or returning employees. Though this year's event comes a bit later than usual after an extended break while an elite skeleton crew tied off a few loose ends and finished some much needed refurbishments. The atmosphere of this year's event, a suave and sophisticated gala, is not unlike that of a grand opening. Your invitation required that you adhere to the formal and elegant dress code.

Upon entering the Atrium, you will find that a table has been set up with party favours: small bags and boxes of varying quality. All bags at least contain lapel pins and name tags with each employee's job title, name, and blood status in fancy silver font. After passing through security and into the party proper, each Ministry employee will be able to find their own personal party favour thanks to the accompanying name tags, which also display blood status. The observant among you may note that the party favours are of the most supreme quality when destined for a pureblood, and diminish in this regard as they become intended for half-bloods, those who consort with muggle-borns and muggles, and muggle-borns themselves. Be sure to put those name tags on.

Chairs and tables are spaced throughout the Atrium, itself bedecked with white, silver, and black décor, leaving spaces all around for mixing and mingling. In one corner of the room, an orchestra of unmanned and enchanted musical instruments provide constant but subtle chamber music. If you pay attention, you may notice that only works by magical composers will be heard all evening. Along one side of the room, buffet tables hold a vast array of canapés and other hors d'oeuvres, and a range of beverages.

In spite of the opulence of the event, one significant change is likely to command your attention more than the rest. In the centre of the Atrium, where the Fountain of Magic Brethren once stood, a new towering marble structure now dominates the space. The Fountain for the Greater Good consists of a colossal levitating hand above a rippling pool of water, wielding a wand, and topped with Gubraithian Fire that nearly licks the ceiling. At its base, the Sign of the Deathly Hallows is engraved above the immortal words of Gellert Grindelwald: For the Greater Good.

Perhaps now it's starting to seem all too clear that the Ministry of Magic is not only ushering in a new year, but a new dawn.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Sophie wasn't normally late for things, but that day had been a bit different, thanks to her two remaining children at home. She did love them dearly, but those two were constantly sometimes a handful. That had been one of those times.

Phew.

But here she was! With a... pin that stated her halfblood status. Huh. That was new. Unnervingly new. The only other time her blood status was put in the spotlight was when Sophie had to deal with a blood supremacist classmate when she was at Hogwarts, and she did not have a good time, to say the least. Yep, she remembered the only Slytherin she disliked: Hannah Lockwood.

Urgh, the thought of that girl alone sent shivers down her spine. Merlin, it had been ridiculously long and she hadn't thought of that girl in actual ages. Sophie couldn't help but wonder how she was doing those days.

Hashtag Former Hufflepuff problems.

Anyhow, there she was, formal attire and all, looking around and not being able to help but already feel out of place. She realised it was the new fountain that was the most unnerving thing there, in her opinion. 'The Greater Good' sent shivers down her spine, just like Hannah Lockwood used to do.

Urghhhh, she wished Mordred had come with her. Or at least she should've come with her cousin. Even though he was 10+ years younger, he was a fully qualified Auror and that definitely counted for something.

Anyway... Sophie thought she should try and socialise a little to get her mind off things, so she looked around the room, this time trying to notice the people in it instead of the... changes. That was hard! She did spot a woman standing on her own, but by the time the Charms Developer made her way towards her, the witch had been joined by a Department Head and... "Daichi!" Blimey, talk about reminiscing about her Hogwarts years! At least he wasn't one of the bad eggs from back then but then again, in Sophie's books Hannah Lockwood was the only bad egg. "Hi!" She greeted him - and the other two women because she was polite - with a small, almost nervous smile, even though she was trying to keep her creeped-out feelings at bay.

"Gabriel," he replied, shaking the man's hand. "Not a mushroom fan, I see." He noticed that Joseph seemed more interested in the fancy sandwiches instead. Also noticed, thanks to the nametags which spared them some boring small talk, that the man worked in the minister's office.

Gabriel really didn't know what went happened there.

"What a press secretary do?" he asked, trying to change the subject from the weird new fountain with the fire atop. Was it a stupid question that he would have figured out the answer to, if he'd given it thirty seconds of thought? Probably... He wiped his hands on a napkin, then surveyed the table so he didn't have to keep making eye contact.

Slipping her hand into the man's, she gave him a firm shake. "It's nice to meet you."

...She couldn't help but smile as they were joined by another man, one she recognized from last year's gathering and who seemed unbothered by polite social conventions like not talking with one's mouth full. She could hardly blame him, the food was calling to her, too. "It's going. I remember you. I believe we talked a bit last time we were here." She tapped her name tag. "Mariana."

And as for the question the next man to join them had asked, Mariana had to agree with Joe. "Those mini-sandwiches do look good. Don't mind if I do." She plucked up one for herself and bit right in.
Picking up another mini sandwich, Joseph smiled. "Yes, I never really liked mushrooms. They kind of freak me out. Not exactly sure why." Looking at his nametag, Joseph found that Gabriel was in YATI training. He glanced up as the man inquired about his job. "I mainly work with the Commissioner to stay up to date with the Ministry's publicity. I also collaborate with the media, like the Daily Prophet or the Quibbler, and act as the Ministry's spokesperson on most Ministry stances. I also go to press conferences, work with department heads and that sort of stuff." After the short description, he took a bite out of the sandwich in his hand. "Oh, and I'm the first face of the Ministry in official interactions and work closely with the Minister and the Senior Undersecretary to present the Ministry in a good light." Following the little addition, Joseph muttered under his breath. "At least that's what the job description said." Returning back to his normal volume, he queried about Gabriel's job in return. "So what do you actually learn in YATI training?"

Turning to Mariana, Joseph's gaze hardened as he saw her frown. He understood why she disapproved of the fountain. The Fountain of Magical Brethren was a truly picturesque statue, and sent out a much more acceptable message than the new one. The Fountain for the Greater Good striked fear into his heart instead of peace. It seemed dark and foreboding rather than glossy and welcoming. And above all, it promoted hatred instead of acceptance. "Nice to meet you too." In a bid to divert both of their attentions from the intimidating fountain, he added, "So what do botanists do?"

Perhaps she could suggest the next orientation be held in a bowling alley or better yet, a discotech. Not only would that be far more fun, but perhaps it could foster more camaraderie and inter-departmental mingling, something she always pined for.

Stopping just short of the table bearing gifts, Yassi looked over the party favors with delight before searching for her own. It very quickly became clear to her that they were sorted by bloodstatus, something which made her insides turn. Only when she found her own gift (marked by her status as a half-blood), did she look around the room for someone to speak to. Company would surely dissolve the strange, twist she felt in her stomach. It was only then that she settled next to Dalton, her eyes lighting up to match the warm smile she easily wore to great him. "We must stop meeting this way," she teased, laughing rather loudly (though that wasn't something she could ever help).

She took her eyes off him for moment to look around the room for face she recognized. Seeing her department head, Simone, standing near, Yassi waved exuberantly in her direction. This year, Yassi hoped to know her better. Perhaps beyond matters of business and efficiency, though this was something she could tell Simone valued in high regard. As she continued her sweep around the room, her eyes fell upon this new fountain structure in the center of the atrium. The words inscribed at its base were a cause of discomfort once more.

She returned her gaze to Dalton, wringing her hands. "I am not sure that I'm a fan of this new fountain." Her discomfort was quite evident in the way she held herself. Perhaps there was no need to state the obvious and yet, Yassi wondered if others felt the same.

Until last year of course.

Last year when his sister - Kendra Jordan-Durand, for those unfamiliar with their familial relationship - was unceremoniously sacked after what he was sure was sabotage. He grew even more certain of this after the past year when everything transportation-related was ~miraculously fixed~ with no more issues. He had a very hard time believing that his sister was as incompetent as she was so clearly being painted. And in addition to all of that, the subtle and not-so-subtle changes over the past year were rather unsettling in a way he couldn't quite put his finger on - but he was beginning to work out what some of them implied.

And on top of all that, Milo had a niece and two nephews at Hogwarts. He was well aware of the broadcasts put out by the Minister regarding the students there. He was also aware that there was no communication with the students, that they weren't even allowed to come home for the Christmas holidays, AND that his other sister - the parent of said niece and nephews - was out of her mind with worry for her children. He had half a mind to let the Minister know exactly what he thought about what was deemed best for the student population.

So as a well-dressed Milo Jordan entered the atrium to attend the Ministry gala, he was angry after a year of built-up frustrations that continued to escalate.

A nametag? Milo supposed he could see the sense in having nametags at a function like this one, especially considering that there would be many new people here, mingling and trying to get to know one another. But it didn't escape his notice that underneath Milo Jordan, Gobstones Division Manager it was written Pureblood. "Unbelievable," he murmured under his breath as he pinned it to his lapel. Who cared? Did that make him more qualified to do his job than someone who wasn't? No, it didn't.

He waved off the party favors as he stepped inside. He might have been eager for something like that in years past, but he did not care about that today. Because it was just then that his eyes focused on what now replaced the fountain of magical brethren. Milo stared at the fountain, his eyes travelling up towards the fire near the ceiling as he approached. "For the greater good? They cannot be serious..." he told no one in particular. But it was just then that he heard the woman who worked in his sister's former department, Yasmin, speak her thoughts to another man, Dalton.

"Not a fan? Do you know what this means?" Milo was incredulous. He was well-versed in Magical History to know this was not good at all. Where was the Minister? Milo had every intention on coming here to meet his new department head, Peggy Laplace, but first he had a few things he needed to say and some questions that needed answered.

After a moment of observing the party, taking in the changes that had been bestowed upon the Ministry, Dalton eventually decided that he would get a drink - just for something to do with the hands that kept absently touching the 'halfblood' label he wore on his chest. Though he was telling himself that it didn't matter, his body language clearly betrayed the truth. Though just what Dalton was feeling was a matter to be worked out another time, or better yet, never. Better to bury it and get on with life, like he always did.

When Yasmin joined him, though, he smiled - her laughter was able to bring out a rare, genuine if small one of his, infectious as it was. "Whilst I quite enjoy meeting like this, I do hope it's not going to foretell what's to come the rest of this evening," he said, his eyes glancing quickly at the fireplaces as he remembered the events of last years party. But he didn't really mind Yasmin's company, surprisingly. Not only was her laughter infectious, but she was quite capable of carry on a conversation with minimal input, and she didn't seem perturbed that he was one of few words.

Not that there was a philosophical reason for his quietness, that he was perhaps making sure that everything he said had really value. No, it was just that quite often, Dalton couldn't be bothered conversing.

Today, however, he was about to answer Yasmin when another man interjected, and Dalton closed his mouth quickly for fear of looking like a fish. With a slight frown, he looked between the man and the fountain, before waving a lazy hand at the flickering image of Grindelwald. "Even it someone didn't, it wouldn't be that difficult to work out," he said flatly. Although he'd never been one for magical history, even he knew who Grindelwald was.

He was going to add something else about maybe, you know, there being a reason for the new décor and maybe, you know, loudly insulting it might not be a clever idea but he kept his mouth shut.

That would be a lot of words, and if the guy wanted to get himself into trouble then who was Dalton to stop him?

She offered a small smile, almost apologetic, and offered, "You must be inundated with those kind of questions. I'm worried about three of those kids, but you have to worry about all of them."

So she'd let it drop, since it seemed like an impossible topic. No one was going to find satisfaction in it, that much was for sure. "I don't mind the desk work, personally. I think the new recruits are surprised by it, but it's important. Legal cases live and die on proper paperwork, no matter how perfect the arrest was. But enough about that..." They didn't have to out bore each other on the minutiae of their job. "How long have you worked for the Ministry?"

Delyth sighed with relief that the woman seemed to be appeased by her answer although something in her eyes seemed to suggest otherwise. Either way, she wasn’t about to intentionally dig deeper, not if she could help it at least. She’d dealt with enough for one week in the office on level one. With a small nod, Delyth sighed a little and looked down at her own feet. “I feel terrible. All of the letter from the parents, it’s just heart breaking and then, well, I helped a lot of them actually get to Hogwarts as part of my last job so I know the families really well”. The guilt that had been filling up with her as the term had moved along and as the letter had started arriving by the ton had brought her to tears many nights. Putting her glass down, she waved her hands in front of her eyes and smiled a little bashfully, embarrassed that was as actually about to cry. Don’t cry stupid, Your makeup! was all she could think. “It’s a lot” was all she could say as she finally looked up, her eyes miraculously dry.

Desk work was something she excelled at if she was being honest. Being at her desk, alone with her organised was a beautiful sight to behold, or at least that’s how she saw it. It most likely made her look like a big nerd as she set out her quill and parchment, all aligned and ready. “The more I talk to you, the more it sounds like a job I might actually be good at” she replied, her smile a little more light hearted now. “I’ve been here a few years. Always on level one. I used to help some of the students get into Hogwarts when I first came here. You know, those who couldn’t really afford it? It was a great job” she replied as she thought back to her first job at the ministry. In reality, it was what, three years ago maybe? “What about you? I’m guessing you’ve been here a while?” she asked, assuming that she’d somehow worked her way up to her current job now as senior auror.

Jane just caught sight of Conley raising his glass in their direction as Nero joined her and raised hers back, then turned to get Nero's attention. She would like to introduce the two, given her half-formed plans about a private discussion with Nero later.

Conley Singh-Phora could wait; Jane stood back and waited to see what Flamsteed's response would be.

It was easy to ignore the name tag on his own chest - Auror, Jacob Upstead, Pureblood - and his thoughts were instead entirely on Becca, and what was written on hers. It had barely been a few minutes, but already he wanted to regroup with his wife, and keep her by his side.

Setting down an empty glass, Jake began to make a circuit of the Atrium, fidgeting slightly inside his, restrictive and too-warm, but very fancy suit. The Auror salary had been extremely beneficial, but with six kids still at home, each more demanding than the last, not to mention still providing for the oldest three over holidays (less of an issue this term, granted), Jake still didn't have the spare funds to go shelling out for fancy gala clothes. Renting was a waste, none of his everyday attire fit the bill, and anything that might once had worked was far too shabby.

This suit had been borrowed from Dale, who was the same height as Jake but not as broad in the shoulder or chest. In the end they'd had to adjust it enough that his brother had just let him keep it, as a late gift. Much as Jake had appreciated it then, he hated the thing now.

Straightening the lapel pin he'd also affixed to his front, Jake paused in his when he reached two of his Law Enforcement colleagues. He hadn't intended to stop, but the younger lad's words had caught his attention, and Jake took the opportunity to pretend he was grabbing a bite to eat, and casually glanced over at the two. "... You didn't get a name tag, Tomasz?" He shot him a small smile, intended to convey he himself wasn't happy with this labelling system, but... who knew how it came across. And then to the other, "Kevin, good to see you here." Small talk was the worst, but Jake was interested in the answer to Tomasz' question, how all this was coming across to everyone else, except he also hoped they wouldn't actually launch all the way into that discussion right here and now. It was a bit of a quandary.

He took mental notes of everyone’s positions in the room and their behaviors.

”Well, the first unusual thing is that you are not wearing your name ta—“ he was about to comment about Tomasz name tag but Jake had beaten him to it. He send the man a ‘oi that was my line!’ look before he grumbled a ”Yeah , you too” showing that he was not pleased having to mingle at all . He’d rather be studying a brutal crime than be here. ”What do you two think of the new fountain?” he asked, being careful not to tell his own feelings of discomfort the moment he had seen the symbols..
Though he did not show it, Tomasz did feel a little embarrassed. He did not think it would be so noticable if he did not wear the tag, but clearly he had been mistaken. Maybe it is because Law Enforcement were trained to notice such details or perhaps his unease was noticeable, drawing unwanted attention his way. In any case, he shrunk a bit, feeling even further embarrassment when Jake joined them to point it out as well. Tomasz had a lot of respect for Jake, so he slightly bowed his head in place of a greeting and answered the question with little hesitance. "Yyy, no," he began, shaking his head and opening up his hand that contained the tag. "The one they gave, it is wrong." Or maybe it was right. Tomasz had no way of knowing, that's what made it unsettling. "Where do they find this information?" He asked both of them, though the question was more or less directed at Jake. He did not stop to consider that maybe neither of them were privy to this information either. Nor did he pause to consider the need for further context. Tomasz just wanted answers. Maybe answers would settle the frustration he was feeling.

Tomasz also did not pick up on any subtle, unsaid signals. He did not pick up on the meaning behind Jake's smile, nor did he understand Kevin's clear displeasure with being engaged in conversation. He was not very good with these things. Instead, he looked over to the fountain, considering Kevin's question before turning back to the two men in his department. "I am confused. What does this mean, 'the greater good'?" Tomasz vaguely recalled the phrase from the graffiti reported within Diagon Alley. While some guards were scattered around wizarding landmarks, Tomasz was usually station inside the Ministry itself, near the atrium and did not spend too much time in other areas around London. Of course, the word had spread quickly, but still, Tomasz did not quite understand.

He had never been very good at recalling facts from history.

There was nothing wrong with being quiet. As a matter of fact, Yassi often found those with fewer words to have a gravitational pull about them. Perhaps this was Rod's influence, again. He was always insisting that introverts, such as himself, were misunderstood creatures. Her brother, of course, insisted many things, but Yasmin was always inclined to believe him lest he think her to be dismissive. It was a lesson she learned from early childhood. As it was, she did enjoy Dalton's company. Especially in the midst of such great chaos. Yassi thrived in large parties, but even this was a little overwhelming for her. It was always nice to have an anchor. "Yes," she chuckled again, her laughter filling the space between them. This was something else she would need to work on, as last year it had gotten her into a bit of trouble .

"Though perhaps we ought to have worn protective ponchos, just to be safe." She looked around the room with a large smile. "Could you imagine the Minister wearing a poncho?!" The very thought brought about another onset of giggles, though she managed to keep them contained this time. She steadied herself by placing a hand on his shoulder, before continuing, "I think it would suit him, no?" He was quite the exuberant man, even from the very little that Yassi had observed of him up until this point.

Pausing to pick a drink off the table, Yassi looked up to see another join their group. She was about to give him a warm smile, but stopped herself when he spoke. "Of course," she replied firmly, but not unkindly, appreciating Dalton's input on the matter. Milo was making quite a number of assumptions. "But if it does mean such things, then perhaps it would be unwise to say something of it before we are given a complete story." Perhaps ten years ago, she wouldn't have been quiet about her thoughts, but over the years, she had come to learn that there was a vital difference between acting and reacting. She did, however, hope that the look she wore conveyed her own displeasure with the matter, but it would do them very little good to lay their cards on the table before they understood.

And knowing the minister, the new refurbishments would not go unmentioned before the end of the night. Yasmin just needed to work out what they were dealing with here.

Gabriel nodded to Mariana, grateful for the reminder of her name. Both the name tag and the verbal reminder. "Yes, I remember you also," he said. "Gabriel." The little sandwiches Mariana and Joseph were not eating looked delicious, but...Gabriel had noticed they didn't take very kindly to him stuffing his face with stuffed mushrooms, so...maybe he needed to hold off on the snacking a while longer. Maybe until he took a break from socializing, and he could make a plate and go sit in a corner somewhere. Yes, that seemed like a good idea.

His ears perked up when Joseph switched from the topic of mushrooms and started explaining his job. Well, rattling off a job description, apparently. "Are you a new hire?" he asked curiously. "YATI training is about preparing to become an Auror, so we learn all sorts of investigative skills, and defensive spells. I'm looking forward to learning hostage negotiation!" Because who didn't look forward to negotiating for the lives of hostages?

Wasn't there some nonsense saying about finding light in times of darkness or something? Laughing at your own circumstances was one of those things, right? But this was a serious event, of course, and so she straightened her face out. "You'll have to introduce me to the other nerds in your department later."

"No expenses spared, hm." Although Darcey definitely noticed some expenses had been spared, depending on bloodstatus, naturally. She wasn't sure whether Peggy was someone Alexander knew, but Florence was the Perfect child, who wouldn't want to know about her? You know, aside from the people here who thought she was dirt for having a Muggle for a father? "Very well, glad for the Christmas break to be over for the kids." Darcey offered her a smile.

Peggy raised an eyebrow at Darcey's laughter. An inside joke, perhaps? Some sort of weird reaction to the stress of this social interaction? She nodded politely as the woman hinted that their children did not go to Hogwarts. That was good. She did not think she wanted to deal with any...misdirected anger at the Hogwarts students staying there for the Christmas break. And, once again, she was incredibly grateful her own two children were safely graduated from Hogwarts.

"That is good to hear," she said simply. "I know the holidays looked different for many families this year, but I'm glad at least some had a refreshing break."

She glanced around the room, realizing she probably...ought to seek out those in her department. She knew Milo and Lucas were here, but had not seen Nick or many of the other employees yet. In her scanning, she did spot one of her Quidditch Division employees, Dane, she thought his name was. "I...think...I see one of my employees over there," she said, squinting to be sure. She was...80% certain it was one of her employees, even if she'd gotten the name wrong. Maybe it was actually Dean? "If you'll excuse me, Alexander, Darcey, I ought to make my rounds. Duty calls, you know." Merlin. Was that something normal people said, or just Peggy?

He no longer felt nervous around Bain Goldwasser - he felt prepared. Excited even. He hadn't brought a date - who had time for dating in these times?! - and merely nodded at all standing near Goldy. Dante and Ms. Alphonsine. "Good evening. I am a little late, but I hope I have not missed much, sir," he said mostly to his boss. His eyes glowed with eagerness at the older gentleman. "I love the name tags. How helpful during these times..." his voice trailed off as he glanced around. "I don't think we've met officially, I'm Scott Ferguson. Security officer and very proud of my place of work." He smiled in a friendly manner at both Dante and Alphonsine.

His eyes trailed off at the.......replacement fountain, and he nodded a bit at it. Nice addition.....nice.

Very nice.

Refreshments? Here? Scottie wanted to eat or drink nothing. His stomach felt like lead.

Ever so slightly his head tilted to the side. Bain wanted to talk to him about a job opportunity? A question began to form in his mind, but his thoughts remained incomplete as another person joined the group. His gaze then turned to the man who introduced himself as Scott Ferguson. The status on his nametag was the first thing he cared to look at. A Pure-blood as a mere Security Officer? What a pity.

"Dante Zabini, Head Obliviator," he responded to Scott before he returned his attention to Bain. "Well, Mr. Goldwasser, I just happen to be in need of another drink. If you don't mind, we can talk on our way over to the refreshments." He made a gesture, silently suggesting to the man they take the long way around the atrium.
QUOTE=Helios Sunrider;12486630]Jane had cast an anchor from the present into the vast depths of his past that Nero found himself drowning in. The light came back into his eyes at the sound of her voice. He followed the woman's sight line to Airey, those bright eyes narrowing slightly. "You are right. He does look highly suspicious...Where is his drink?" That just wouldn't do.

Nero stalked his way towards his department head like an extra in West Side Story. The music wasn't very conducive to dancing, but the wizard managed to find a rhythm to move to. "Airey! I haven't been to a party like this since the nineteen-forties. Grindelwald had a lot of powerful friends during the war." Standing before Mr.Flamsteed, the doctor held out his hands, offering up either the glass or the bottle. "And they always had the best refreshments."

Nero's involvement in the wizarding war was kept tightly under wraps, as part of his agreement with the ministry, but Airey would be one of the few wizards with the clearance to uncover his secrets if he really did some digging. That might complicate things, but he couldn't consider that right now.
Ferguson was, Bain thought, perhaps a big too eager. He might need to keep an eye on this one. In fact, he gave him a very unimpressed look as the man walked up and chatted very chummily at him. He hadn’t forgotten the implications in his office the last time they had talked. True they might have been, but still, at least Ferguson didn’t look phased like a good portion of his staff did. Yes, he had been noticing, even if he couldn’t hear all of what was being said. ”Ferguson, go make yourself useful.” And by that he meant somewhere else. He had things to discuss and pending those things, Ferguson could then report to Zabini and stay out of his hair.

”A drink,” he replied, black eyes drawn to the ancient man loudly addressing Flamesteed. ”Sounds marvelous.” His lips twitched at the idea and an odd sparkle might have filled the department head's eyes. Still, he had a job to do. Duty first and all that. So with a hand out-held for Zabini to lead the way and he followed the young man to the edge of the Atrium. When they were far enough away from the grouping surrounding the Minister he finally spoke. ”I am putting together a special team, whose primary responsibility will be to ensure that those serving The Greater Good are who they say they are.”

Vivi smiled a bit, and she finally let her attention wander to the buffet table. Food. Free food. Was it POISONED, though? Seriously, did anyone look like they were going to keel over? Chances were slim that it was poisoned, but there were a lot of questionable things that could go into the food that would influence behavior or compliance. She took a sip from her cup, finally, and ignored the rumble of her stomach.

"It sounds like you were really good at your last job, and you're good at this current one. My opinion is worth about as much as those cheese rinds over there, but I think caring about your job is the most important qualification in this place. You can learn to do most jobs, but they can't make you care." And they couldn't just make her not care either.

"I've been here ages, yeah. Started right after Hogwarts myself, and I have three teenagers now, so that should tell you." She'd always sort of expected that one of her kids would follow her to the Ministry, the way that she'd followed her own mother, but if they didn't... that was fine. Maybe better than fine, since this job didn't seem terribly safe lately.

Had it ever seemed safe?

However, she had started adjusting to the new curves, feeling a little more content with her body image as the weeks went on after the triplet’s birth. Besides her husband only had to reassure her a hundred thousand times that she was still his goddess. The second emotion, she found herself feeling was excitement. It had been a while since the last formal event and she had been dying to get out of the house and get all dolled up. Too often, she found herself in more practical yoga pants and a hoodie which was something she swore that she’d never wear prior to the pregnancy. So she took the opportunity to get all dolled up in a beautiful and sparkly look. If this was her one night off Mum duty, she was going to look flawless. The third feeling was anxiety. Even though their children’s minder was most trusted, she felt terrified without having the triplets here with them. It was so strange to not have one or two sitting on her hip.

After all that’s what the Morgenstern-Dane’s do.

She felt her husband’s grip tighten slightly and she cast him a quizzical look when he eyed his name tag. “Dont tell me they put Aegis Morgenstern on there, darling,” she teased before picking up her own nametag which read Arabella Dane. She glanced around the room, trying to spot her father or her brother’s wife. However, neither were in site. She had doubted her father would have made it. The family business was rather preoccupying these days.

Have I told you how handsome you look? We really ought to dress up more often at home... I think the children would like it.” Though she’d like it more. It could be a sort of date night or something if that nature! She leaned into her husband a little. “Do you see your new department head?

Not that Dylan was entirely certain the answer she would have gotten had she asked would have been the truth. She was honestly beginning to doubt that she’d get the truth from any of the department heads at this point, given the assumption that they all had been privy to the “enhancements” made to the Atrium. She knew her history books much too well to believe the sight of Grindelwald’s portrait hanging on the walls extolled any sort of positive influence.

As such, she’d been grateful as her gaze had landed on familiar faces. Familiar faces that weren’t only familiar due to work. Namely Arabella and her sister-in-law’s husband, and she had found herself walking over to the duo almost without thinking. “You two look stunning,” she said as a manner of greeting, accompanying it with a brief smile. Bringing up exactly everything that seemed off about this whole situation hardly seemed like a good starting of point.

He knew she was teasing him about his concern. Pointing to the letters on it. "It's nothing. Perhaps my New Department Head could explain it to me why it says this." Now where were they? They must be making rounds themselves looking to greet their employee's yes? He switched to hold her hand and gave it a tight squeeze as reassurance that he wouldn't let it bother him for the night. She should be worried about her own tag. Despite it saying pureblood, it looked almost no different than his. And he saw how shiny some of the other pureblood tags looked.

"I'm handsome? Bells, I can't even compare to you're beauty." Any onlookers would probably gag at how lovey-dovey they were being with each other. Married for a few months and they still act like a college couple. "I won't say no to that. I'm sure I could convince my Sister-In-Law to make some Baby O-Star suits and dresses. Then we could really look the part." He probably couldn't convince Ariana Gunter to do anything he asked, but it sounded like a brilliant idea.

Was this? Aegis had to do a quick run threw in his head of Arabella's relatives. Dylan was her name right? She was Arabella's Sister-In-Law. Okay easy enough. Aegis was smart. "Thank you. Not half bad yourself, Dylan." smooth talker, Dane. Real smooth. Make yourself look cool in front of extended family.

He looked around and spotted a familiar face. He offered her a little wave. She at least seemed to be socializing well enough. He, on the other hand, might just need a drink to hold to not look so out of place.

Usually Louise was okay with galas, especially the more formal ones. It was one time of year when she could dress in formal wear, albeit this was definitely a weird year. She hadn't been home to America in awhile and with what she'd been hearing on the news, she wasn't sure she was going to be traveling anytime soon. Of course she had her little godchildren who she was spoiling every chance she got, but that didn't make up for missing her parents. She was thirty years old for goodness sake.

Before she had the full chance to take in the changes to the atrium, once entering she found her party favor and peered inside. Not that she needed it, since most party favors tended to be junk but inside she found a lapel pin which was actually kind of nice and a name badge. After several years working here, was her Ministry ID badge not sufficient? Of course this name badge did look more appropriate and less jaunty then the typical ID badge for a formal gala, but she did nearly throw up in her mouth when she spotted her blood status on there. Half-blood. Why? What did that matter? Her parents were both magic, even though her mother was a muggleborn, she was still a witch. What was up with all this blood purity and wasn't that a thing of like last century? Did true purebloods even still exist? She glanced around till her gaze found Conley's but he seemed busy for the moment. Did he believe in all this blood purity dung? Now wasn't really the time or place to discuss this, so instead she took in the rest of the atmosphere and did appreciate the music playing, as she made her way over to a gathering, grateful that Arabella had joined her at the ministry a couple years ago (?) cause at least she had someone to schmooze with.

"Bells. Does your tag have this on it?" she made a face, pointing at the blood status. "Hey Aegis. Dylan." She acknowledged of the two standing with her bestie. She glanced around some more, spotting Bennett from her department over there and gave him a small wave. Perhaps he'd come over and join her and meet her friends. Or if not, she'd go over and chat with him later. He was nice and respectable enough.

***

Carsyn was here not as a Ministry employee but as a guest to a friend whom asked her to accompany him. She was vaguely curious how many of her former schoolmates besides the one friend had decided to apply to the Ministry, not to mention she could use the break from schoolwork. Dressing up in red to show her former house pride, she had arrived to the Ministry only to discover .... her friend wasn't there yet??? Had he been fired before he started? Or had she missed some sort of memo about him picking her up at her flat? She tried to recall the last conversation she had with him this morning and was pretty sure they discussed meeting at the ministry and yet....No Carson. She did see a Stella and Oceanus though; were they both working at the ministry then? Or was just one of them and the other was a plus one like herself? Was she meant to take one of the swag bags or wait for the ministry employee to accompany her? Where had her confidence gone because Carsyn was pretty sure she used to be more confident than this and yet the eighteen year old felt so small and out of place. She was just going to awkwardly wait over by the entrance for Carson for twenty minutes tops and hope for the best. And try not to stare too hard on that fountain.

Eyes were now on the Law Enforcement head, and Dante noticed the lip twitch. Nothing was said about it though. He didn't know Bain well enough to know if that was a normal mannerism. All he knew was purely speculation, for now. But the gesture from the man was all he needed to know that it was time to depart. "Please excuse me for a moment," he said to those who were present in the group (excluding the Squib, of course) with a charming smile before stepping away from them.

Words were not said as the pair walked to the edge of the atrium. The silence didn't bother him in the slightest. In fact, he welcomed the opportunity to embrace not having to rub elbows, to collect himself, and to fleetingly observe those the two men happened to pass by. Some were easy to read and very little effort was needed to know what they were thinking.

When Bain spoke, the Head Obliviator didn't reply right away though he was intrigued. His dark eyes shifted from people who were nearby so he was directly looking at the department head. "Seems reasonable," Dante spoke simply. With these changes in place, he could foresee that there would be some bad apples among them. "And you would like for me to be involved how exactly?"

A nod of his head was given when the comment was given about the flames making for a strong case. Regardless of how anyone felt about The Greater Good and its history, it was in some ways impressive. But none of it was impressive enough to sway this Auror. A strong opinion about it all had been made about it years ago in History of Magic, and everything present now in the atrium was deeply concerning.

Saul's questions made him feel a bit hollow inside. It was odd how all of this happened right under their noses. "We've been kept busy with our assignments and filing out paperwork as per usual," he told the older man. "But this -- this definitely wasn't on our radar and we've not yet been briefed about anything else."

He gazed upon the fountain once more, his blue eyes fixated on the haunting symbol and words beneath them. His mind wandered for a moment. He was reminded of the graffiti in Diagon Alley, and then he pondered about how the symbol wound up being put on display in the Ministry before he recalled the wireless broadcast that had happened weeks ago. "Have you been told about the changes that are supposedly happening with your division?"

As it read Stella Starson, Greenhouse Caretaker Half-Blood. She wanted to roll her eyes at all of this, it was all stupid in her opinion.

Biting her lip, she looked around for anyone that she knew, but she didn't see anyone. Walking from the table, she looked around the place trying to keep calm and collected but failing miserably. She needed her Ocean to calm her down, she could feel her blood boling at all of this, why did blood matter they were all equal. She hated how this was going, she could only hope it'll get better but had a feeling it was going to be a long night.
Oceanus was here. He had even dressed for the occasion in a suit. The tie around his neck was a fair bit crocked and loose but he was trying his best. Suits were never really his thing.

Stepping into the Atrium and glancing around, it was clear this place was overdone. The tables, fountain and the name-tags too. Really? He needed the thing to tell him his blood status? Pathetic honestly. Nonetheless, the newly hired Ministry worked stuck the name-tag to the front of his suit jacket. Oceanus Zunther, Pest Control Officer, Pureblood.

Thankfully another quick glance about the large room did he well. Spotting Stella he walked straight over and wordlessly slid his hand into hers giving her fingers a light squeeze. She need not worry any longer, he was here now.

She wouldn’t say she had gone to town with the evening, but she certainly was enjoying getting dressed up AND getting Kaiser into a suit. Granted it was not one she had designed herself, she was still warming him up to prints and her particular favored textiles, but she had tailored in the jacket a bit to fit him better around the shoulders so he looked a little less like an American football player or (for the feelsy analogy) like someone who had borrowed their father’s suit. Her own dress came from the scraps found around the studio after completing an assignment for Sophia, two thin pieces of regalia purple velvet that just draped too perfectly to be left in the scrap pile. Purple was her favorite and signature color, after all. Her trademarked embroidered butterfly (mauve sparkly thread this time) fluttering along the bottom hem as they strolled in, Candela quickly found herself in not as giddy about things as she had been earlier and even her curls seemed to wilt a bit as she held on to his arm a little more tightly.

The Ministry, politics, bureaucracy, all of it had never been of particular interest to her as much as networking and meeting all varieties of people was. That was what politics and its diplomacy had done for her, exposure to the world and jumping from place to place as her adoptive parents’ positions in International Magical Cooperation often felt like a roulette wheel month to month at times with where they would be stationed. Since her transfer to Hogwarts until present day was the longest she had ever been in one place...and she felt comfortable with that. Happy. Two feelings that were entirely void from her slender frame right now as she glanced around for the Minister who, from what she could tell with her squint, felt like the same person she had met at the holiday gathering and yet that person had not felt like the sort to approve of nor enjoy the particular décor.

You look dashing, Kaiser. Very handsome, she reminded him (AGAIN) with a squeeze to his arm. “...and I don’t think it’s the suit causing that…” Her heels helped her not be so short standing beside him - she could even rest her chin on his shoulder without straining her neck if she wanted to. At the moment, however, she was looking for her own name tag and merely giggled noting what was on his before he was snatching it away to fret over. Curious how she had never felt the need to pry or pester over his first name and wanting to know it...perhaps because she had the same sort of personal vendetta against her own last na----

...whatever you are about to do to yours...do to mine as well...please…bitte...por favor she mumbled as she plucked her own from the table and felt her insides twist horribly at the Candela Hickinbottom, Muggleborn on full display. Just as her counterpart, she hadn’t even acknowledged the ‘muggleborn’ label there - something that would perplex her immensely because what did the British Ministry know that she did not?? - but the name which she had severed her ties with well over two years ago. Her hazel blue eyes darting upwards to add a bit more emphasis to her begging, she also caught another woman glancing over in their direction and briefly offered her a smile (Candi assumed she was a colleague of his) ...but soon returned to Kaiser.

How the hell she had convinced him to be here at another one of these shindigs was beyond him. Hand in hand at that. From the moment they had arrived, Cox had been ready to turn around and march right back out. Her work at the Ministry had already started and he had vowed never to work at this place again despite the nice compensation his former department head and Hogwarts professor had arranged with the approval of Minister Hollingberry for all those years the former loon had transformed him into a trout. He honestly could care less about the name tag business, save for the fact that his full name of ‘Elliot Cox’ was now right there and he was still very much in a state of Cox and keeping the Elliot side tucked away in seclusion. Even if Eureka was starting to scratch those walls down - it would still take her a bit of time.

Oh good,” he groaned noting that she tucked hers away. “Means I don’t have to wear this rubbish either.” No one needed to know his name, thanks. He was neither here nor there about his blood status, muggleborn, but hardly felt that that was pertinent information to anyone either. “How long are you going to make us stay for?” Sure, he imagined he was about to be weasled into a dance or two but could they then get out of here? It had absolutely nothing to do with the new decor, which if anything he found appealing for reasons he did not feel like exploring at the moment, and everything to do with this being a large social gathering while wearing a penguin suit. He just wanted his jeans and flannel, thanks. Catching her eye, however, he signed and started walking more towards things when his perpetually irritated gaze fell upon the familiar likes of Natalie and Emilia. Neither of whom he felt would be particularly pleased to see him for one reason or another - though neither he felt he was on bad terms with either.

Had just been, well, awhile.

...wizarding Britain is entirely too small,” he grumbled to himself while pulling his attention away from the duo of ladies back to his nametag which he promptly shoved into his trouser pocket.

*********************

His head slowly turned to look at the young woman, his eyes both present and vacant at the same time. There was a pause before he spoke, as though searching the wealth of information in his brain for the perfect response that would have come more readily and easily under other circumstances. “Change is the essential process of all existence,” he replied with the same joyless tone he had before despite the source he was quoting. And then the man’s head was inclined towards another voice who had joined them, one of the Unspeakables from the department. One who was on the short list of potential liabilities who would need to be dealt with. “Gerulf. Good evening.

Then they were joined by yet another of Flamsteed’s former pupils and there was yet another moment of processing the words spoken to him before a response returned. “Live long and prosper, Miss Wright.” Verbal greeting only

When yet another joined the growing group, the man’s jaw clenched and the corner of his mouth twitched uncontrollably for a few counts...though this muscle spasm too soon was dealt with. “Airey Flamsteed repaired all the orbs,” he corrected her somewhat coldly. There was only one reason the orbs had been repaired at all that day and that reason was now in the hands of another at Hogwarts now. His throat felt dry and scratchy and deep down he wished to reach up and fiddle with the knot of his tie, but he couldn’t. He could only continue to stare ahead or cae cursory glances at those who had decided to speak with him. “I would not care for cider.” Words that came around as an after thought of sorts.

It was not words but the utterly absurd movement of another Unspeakable as they approached that drew the department head’s attention next. Two Unspeakables, for that matter. Though one he could forgive due to the phial in his pocket of her creation. He had not yet made an attempt to examine nor test it out, however, and was waiting for the opportune moment to do so. His icy forget-me-not-blues looked the offerings up and down, though made no effort to accept either. Those were not among his commands for the evening. “I can only assume you have had your share partaking in them,” he replied coolly. It would explain the erratic walking. “I believe Bain would like to take you up on the invitation. Your efforts would be best guided in that direction.

*********************

Dante was a good strapping boy and Charles had a very good feeling that this little introduction was just the beginning the two needed to get off on the right foot. Not to mention that the young man had impeccable taste, complementing his red velvet like that! Though he could not for the life that was left in him understand why Alana was behaving in such an aghast manner. Did she not enjoy apples? Everyone enjoyed apples. They were such a versatile fruit and the perfect illustration to what the Ministry and the wizarding world at large were on the cusp of! He could understand, perhaps, not enjoying applesauce...since not everyone enjoyed the mushy texture. Perhaps he should have explained things to her using a different fruit instead.

Though that thought would have to be postponed for another time.

Despite the menagerie of food options available this evening, Charles was just about to ask Sian if she had any of her delights on her when another absolute delight approached and easily captivated his attention. “Alphonsine,” he smiled broadly at her as he extended one of his arms, the one without the cane, towards her for a tender side embrace. “Perhaps we should discuss some renovations to my seating area over our next tea time?” He truly could not have accomplished all that he had without her influence. Which reminded him that he did wish to spare a moment to look over his notecards again, soon, before the night got away from them all too much. A simple toast to really give the gala the prestige it demanded.

Oh. When had Victoria arrived? He had been so enchanted by Alphonsine and that entrancing smile of hers he had hardly noticed the arrival of his girlfriend. Was it proper for someone his age to use that term? It seemed like such a juvenile concept. No matter. “Oh that would be delightful. I am feeling a bit parched and you will be needing a drink in hand for the toast I still need to give,” he smiled while balancing on his cane yet again so that he could offer her his arm just as Bain made his way over to the group. Seemed like perfect timing considering the Law Enforcement head had some business to attend to. “If you all will excuse us...shall see you in a bit once I make my toast.

Leading the way over to the refreshments, hobbling more like it, with Victoria on his arm, Charles selected a little bubbly for her and traded in his glass for a new one. His eyes drifted back to the fountain, the Gubraithian Fire reflecting in his green eyes as he gazed upon in for a few moments - almost as though he were waiting for something in the flames to give him the signal to proceed. Though soon he was smiling over at Victoria and lifting his glass to her. “Will only be just a moment. I owe a bit of a speech,” he chuckled while patting his breast pocket where the note cards were tucked away. “Would you be so kind as to clink your glass as well? I fear the buzz of the room will not quite resonate with me along, even with a bit of Sonorus,” he winked as he cast the spell on his glass and gave it a tap with a spoon for a crisp TING TING TING.

Moving to the small stage beside the enchanted instruments (which ceased their playing as he lifted his hand towards them), Charles pulled the note cards out finally...but ultimately gave them very little time. The words were already in his head and had been, there was no need for him to refresh himself.

Pardon the interruption, friends and colleagues! If you all could please ensure you have a bit of bubbly in hand...yes? Excellent! Charles’ jovial voice boomed across the Atrium, his eyes twinkling and a pleasant grandfatherly sort of smile in place. His fingers coiled over the lion head atop his cane and wiggled it a bit into a more comfortable position as he looked over the crowd. His shoulders rolled and his chessed puffed out, but as his gazed shifted among the crowd ...the twinkle in his eyes faded.I would just like to take a moment to welcome, WELCOME, one and all to what is sure to be another PROSPEROUS year at the Ministry of Magic! The improvements to the Atrium which currently surround you all - such delightful feasts for the eyes, are they not? - now are only the beginning as we step out of the shadows and into the light as a wizarding nation. Let us lift our glasses and offer a toast to the future of our wizarding world, to the freedom to be ourselves, and our contributions to the Neo Alliance with which we stand. May this new era shine eternal like the Gubraithian Fire above us! To the greater good!

And with that, Charles lifted his glass just a bit higher to toast both to the crowd and once more to the Dark wizard who has appeared on the tapestries once again. His hand shook and there was some strain to his moments as he next lifted the glass to his lips and took a deep sip.

The morning's events at the Welsh Dragon Reserve was enough to prove that Carson was (would be?) a terrible ministry employee. Now he was late to the gala and left Carsyn waiting alone, which proved that he was also a terrible friend.

What a day. He was discovering too many unwelcome aspects of his personality it was almost overwhelming.

Spotting his friend standing by the entrance, Carson jogged over to her and waved with a big smile. He was glad she was here with him. The idea of being alone in the middle of older employees with a wealth of magical experience and wisdom intimidated him, which was why he asked her to accompany him. She was quite outgoing and confident, so he thought she would socialise well and hopefully help him to get to know his new colleagues; if not, they could be two awkward lil kids together in a corner. "Hey, Syn! Sorry I'm late, have you been waiting long?" he embraced her briefly and stepped back to admire her outfit. "Look at yooou. You look gorgeous."

"You won't believe what happened this morning," he muttered as he offered Carsyn his arm and led her toward the goodie bags table. "I received an emergency owl from the department urging me to report to the Ministry. When I arrived, there were Portkeys everywhere and we were sent to the Welsh Dra - " he paused when he grabbed the bag belonging to him and saw a name tag displaying his name, job title (Personal Assistant to Aurora Bagnold) and the fact that he was half-blood. Huh. He began to put the name tag on, raising his eyebrows at his friend. Did she have the same uneasy feeling as him about this disclosure of heritage? Just then, the Minister of Magic made a speech that further unnerved him. It was only when Hollingberry mentioned the Gubraithian Fire that Carson's eyes were drawn to the fountain. The Deathly Hallows, for the greater good, a "new era" ...

... This was not good.

Oliver briefly stopped to pick up a handful of canapés that smelled like pizza before heading over to take a closer look at the new attraction that had taken the Fountain of Magical Brethren's place.

The statue for the greater good looked ghastly, but still had a strange appeal somehow that he couldn’t decipher why. Spotting a blond woman; Stella who looked quite ready to hex someone Oliver headed over to her with a small smile pursing his lips as he offered "Good evening, do you care for a pizza canapé? They are delicious." Trying to be tactful he chose a safe card. "Lovely dress, by the way I'm Oliver." Now what had ruffled her feathers?
Returning the small smile back, Stella sighed her sky blue eyes looking around the place. This wasn't how she imagined working for the ministry would be like, it didn't seem warm and welcoming. "Hello good evening to you as well, thanks I love pizza so this has to be a close seconsm" Taking one she took a bite out of it. "Mmm... you're right it is good, I'm Stella. Looking down at her dress she smiled. "Thank you, my boyfriend brought it for me."

She didn't like any of this at all, but what were they able to do about it?

Delyth couldn’t help but nod and sigh a little. If only caring about your job and helping those around you was enough these days? No, it seemed that there was always one agenda or another at play who all had their own ideas and purposes. Was there anyone who really cared for the children at Hogwarts? Really? It seemed not these days. Not where it counted at least.

“Thank you, I mean we all work hard to try and make a difference and I hope that I have for the better at least. So many things had happened at the ministry and Hogwarts over the last few years that simply making some kind of positive impact was enough for her at the moment. “I’m sure plenty of people would say the same thing about you though. I can imagine at times being an auror can be pretty thankless. Going around and doing things that people don’t even realise” her laugh small but genuine for the first time tonight. Her idea of what an Auror was most likely way off what it was actually like, what with her making the job sound more like some kind of super spy gig but still.

“Is that always something you’ve wanted to do? I mean, have you ever wanted to do something else and, you know, take a break?”. It all sounded like so much effort, which wasn’t a bad thing, but being in the same job so such a long time just sounded, well, boring. Delyth had so many questions that she wanted to ask the woman about her children from their names to their ages and their favourite subjects but the questions she had were silenced as the Minister’s speech had begun, her hand instantly reaching for another glass as requested.

Smiling politely as she listened, she couldn’t help but try to dissect the real meaning of the speech although that in itself wasn’t exactly different. Her smile froze in place as the minister began to thank the Neo Alliance and then again, as he finished with that famous Grindelwald quote. At its culmination, she blonde did her best not to look too worried and simply necked her bubbly back in one. This was going to be a long night it seemed. “I don’t know about you Genevieve but I could do with another glass if the night continues in this manner”.

Jane stood slightly behind Nero, her normally cool expression pasted on her face as she observed Airey Flamsteed reacting to the various guests that came up to him. She was deeply disturbed--she did not know the man well enough to know all his normal reactions, but his behavior tonight was odd enough for anyone.

When she heard the loud clinking of a glass, she turned to listen to the Minister's speech, bubbly in hand (thanks to Nero). And this speech did not make her feel any better about things. She was glad her normal facial expression was not very demonstrative, because she did not think she could muster up much more than a slight smile at the end of the toast.

There were a lot of things that couldn't be said. Not in this room, not without knowing how this woman felt about the Neo-Alliance, not without knowing if her children were safe. Vivi would fight with everything she had, if asked to, but if her actions at work put her family in danger, then she could learn to shut her mouth. But she did feel like there was more to what Delyth felt about all this, and it was a darn shame that they couldn't talk about true feelings.

Maybe they both made the same face at the Minister's speech before masking it with a sip. Chances were good. Vivi swallowed her answers about how it felt to be an Auror and how much she'd wanted to be one her entire life, just as she swallowed her sip of champagne.

"Would you like to get coffee sometime? In the cafeteria? Maybe take a break and compare our paperwork?" And maybe actually talk about how they felt about something.

Arabella pursed her lips as she scanned the crowd. She could have sworn that she saw Dylan somewhere...

She took a step closer to her husband so that she could better see his nametag. Gosh her eyesight was starting to go.... Soon enough she’d need glasses at this rate. And currently... Arabella REFUSED to wear glasses.... however, that would be a debate for a different night... surely.

She hadn’t noticed the blood status written on there.... Well truth be told, she never had to worry about it as she was a Morgenstern. Wealthy, old pure blood family that didn’t need to worry often... Her eyes flicked to her own name tag and spotted it, wondering why it mattered. Arabella wasn’t worried about herself or him at the moment.... she just missed their kids. ‘Darling.. that’s ... interesting....’ she said as she frowned. Arabella gave his hand a squeeze.

Arabella gently pushed him away when he complimented her looks before pulling him closer. She was very much like the cat that didn’t want to be complimented in front of others but then when people stopped - she only wanted more compliments. You know that meme, right? Her eyebrow arched at the Baby O Star suits and dresses made her smile more. "Surely that would make them the most fashionable babies...

She was about to add on to the comment when she heard someone calling out and she saw her SISTER IN LAW! ‘DYLAN!!’ she cried as she held her arms out to hug her. “What my husband meant to say was that you look beautiful. How are you and the girls? And my darling brother?’ She took a step back towards her husband, linking her arm with his.

Hold the phone!! Her bestie tingles were tingling. And that was when she heard her bestie inn-arson. Louise looked fantastic. Blue was always her color. It had always been. She had been distracted by her friends dress for a moment until she processed what Louise had asked. Ah the name tag. “Yeah... All of ours do... what do you think it....

She stopped mid sentence as the clinging of glass was heard and then...things happened. Her eyes widened as she saw the banners. What false era was this? Where was her father to help intervene with all his wisdom?

Name tags? "That's nice," she smiled, stepping forward and looking for her own. She found her bag near her fiancé's, but there was one glaring difference: it's size. Though Calyx didn't notice, Nina found this to be curious and began snooping through the other party favors. Immediately she recognized that they were sorted by bloodstatus and this... made her feel uncomfortable. The Ministry was a bureaucratic institution, something Nina recalled from her internship, but still this was unsettling.

Before she had the chance to think about this any further, Calyx pulled her from her thoughts. "Hm?" She turned to look at him now, quickly pinning her own name tag to her dress as he spoke. "That sounds lovely." And it did. She did want to dance, but it was important that she met his coworkers and had the chance to boast about him before they did any dancing. Calyx always took the time to shower her with praise, it was only right that she did the same for him. He deserved it more than anyone she knew. "But let me fix your name tag first," she laughed softly, reaching over to fix it for him, before slipping her hand into his. "Calyx, look, they replaced the fountain." Nina instinctively pulled herself closer to him. She was clearly feeling some type of way.

Obligingly, Calyx stayed still while Nina fussed with his name tag and then when she slipped her hand into his, lifted it to his mouth to place a few kisses on her fingertips.

As for the fountain, Calyx turned his attention to it with curiosity. "Oh! I wonder why? The fire is pretty neat!" And you know, doing things for the good of others was good too, right? That was... what the greater good meant, didn't it?

SPOILER!!: Bertie and also Olly mentions

A boyfriend and a baby at home were the perfect excuse for a speedy exit once she'd gotten done with the usual pleasantries. Thank you for the promotion, but I ought to be on my way now, cheerio! These kinds of events were never her thing, but they were even less her thing with the current set up.

Alberta got her name tag and stuck it to the front of her jacket. Alberta Bowman. Head of Botany Division. Pureblood. Was bloodstatus really necessary? Surely the Ministry knew everyone's bloodstatus already. The blood status on display was about as necessary as the latest architectural addition to the Atrium. Couldn't they at the very least come up with a slogan of their own? This one hadn't worked for Grindelwald and it hopefully wouldn't work for them either. It seemed more like some sorry attempt at embarrassing those with supposedly less than desirable blood status.

Tonight, however, was not the night to get into petty arguments about the ministry's new course. So Bertie made her way inside, collecting her giftbag before scanning the room for any friendly faces. It didn't take her too long to spot the young kid Calyx, offering him a quick smile before checking for other DERP people more her age. Bertie noticed her Department Head Olly in the far corner and made her way over, nodding at a few colleagues whose names she probably should know but definitely didn't.
"The party we've all been waiting for." She said, not bothering to hide the sarcasm in her voice. "How long do you think we have to act like we're having a good time until it's acceptable to leave?"

"There are my bosses!" Calyx said to Nina, waving at Ms Bowman in response to her smile and indicating Ms Emmons-Clarke as well when Bertie joined her. They were both nice very nice ladies and of course plant people, which was even better!

Another employee caught her eye and she looked to introduce herself. "Daichi welcome to orientation. I presume you've looked over your employee files I sent during holiday." She wanted all her employees to know exactly what to expect. "This is Stella, Stella this is one of our newest employees Daichi"

Blimey, talk about reminiscing about her Hogwarts years!

Stella sipped her champagne and turned to look at her boss when she heard the woman speak. "I did, Simone, thank you." Not that she was about to give much detail on that front, most of Stella's good times wouldn't exactly come across as professional and while Stella Jarsdel was a lot of things, professionalism was important to her in the workplace.

"I like keeping busy." She added, eyebrow barely quirking at the 'wonderfully' part though. She was happy enough to give the benefit of the doubt and see how things played out, but more importantly this wasn't the time or place to question anything. Better just to observe. She smiled at Daichi when he was introduced and another woman who joined them. "I am Mme Kraftt's assistant." She clarified to the two of them, her French accent gently playing with her words. She might have added more but then the sound of a glass being tapped rang out.

“Pardon the interruption, friends and colleagues! If you all could please ensure you have a bit of bubbly in hand...yes? Excellent!” Charles’ jovial voice boomed across the Atrium, his eyes twinkling and a pleasant grandfatherly sort of smile in place. His fingers coiled over the lion head atop his cane and wiggled it a bit into a more comfortable position as he looked over the crowd. His shoulders rolled and his chessed puffed out, but as his gazed shifted among the crowd ...the twinkle in his eyes faded. “I would just like to take a moment to welcome, WELCOME, one and all to what is sure to be another PROSPEROUS year at the Ministry of Magic! To the greater good!”

And with that, Charles lifted his glass just a bit higher to toast both to the crowd and once more to the Dark wizard who has appeared on the tapestries once again. His hand shook and there was some strain to his moments as he next lifted the glass to his lips and took a deep sip.
Out of the shadows and into the light standing with the Neo Alliance. Well. Stella watched the Minister with great interest and then glanced at her department head before scanning around the rest of the crowd. Silently, she raised her glass just enough to be considered a toast, and then she sipped from it, still watching the crowd.

--------------------------

Oh a toast! They had come just in time then. Calyx grabbed a couple of champagne glasses from a passing waiter with an appreciative smile, and handed one to Nina. He listened obligingly to the Minister's speech then leaned in to whisper to Nina, utterly clueless, "What is the Neo Alliance? What are they allied against?"

Nero's cheshire grin faded by degrees with each of his department head's words. Even his loose, care free, posture was replaced by rigid shoulders and a clenched jaw. "You do NOT dare dismiss me so cavalierly, Flamsteed! I have waited a very, very long time for this day. Now that it's here, it's only a matter of time before I get my hands on the --"

Those last couple words, the objects of his desires, were lost to the sound of tinging glass. The old doctor took this opportunity to turn away, and return to Jane's side to listen to the Minister's speech.

With a bright smile back on his face, Nero gave the witch a small nudge before clinking her glass with his. "To the greater good!" And then he downed his drink.

Default Mentions, oh yes some mentions Kaiser/Date, Dante, Charles
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

She had such high hopes for this ministry year. She had really felt she was getting the hang of her job and doing such a great job, but towards the end before the holiday she had noticed some department heads treating her differently, like she had a sign on her back to kick her down. No worries though she had Fletcher who seemed to really appreciate her and of course Charles whom always seemed to be in her corner, but recently it had become odd and tonight was the worst, now in just a few moments Alana felt like things were going to be going the wrong way.

Letting go of Dante's hand she smiled the best she could. "I hope to see you around the ministry, it is always nice to get to know more people we work with." On a normal evening she would have found the man interesting and cute, but tonight she felt like she had to have a guard up on everyone. This damn name tag, she wanted to burn it right now.

Once her mother and Charles left the little group she felt no reason to stay around such judgmental and full of themselves people so she gave Dante another nod and headed away. Her heart did jump a bit when she saw Kaiser at the door, finally someone she knew was a friend and maybe they could just hang back together, but she never actually went over to say hello, just as her feet started that way she noticed a woman on his arm. She felt really stupid at the point thinking he would come alone, why would he? Why wouldn't he have a girlfriend? She was an idiot to think other wise and look how beautiful the woman was, Alana slide into the crowd to just blend in the best she could but at the moment she felt she wasn't blending in, the name tag kept her apart.

She was trying to hide her feelings and smiled at a few other people. Going over to bar area she grabbed a drink just as Charles started his speech. She raised her glass, but quickly took it down. What was he saying? Who was this man in front of him? She was certain at the very point her mother had been cuddling and doing Merlin knows what else with an imposter. Whether it was someone else being him or his true colors coming out Alana didn't know, but she didn't know if she could stay at this event much longer.

Charles taking her arm and moving way from the group was the best choice he could have made. What was the saying every great man has a great woman in his corner and some of these women here needed to remember that just because she wasn't at the ministry anymore didn't mean she wasn't in his corner and around. "Honestly Charles I don't know how you trust that woman with anything, especially your tea." She had never trusted her and the more she was around the less Victoria liked her.

Trying to take it from mind she walked with him and took her glass. She smiled proudly at him as he started his speech. This man she had watched get the minister position, grew to know as the minister on a professional level, and in the past few years on a very personal level had become so important to her and so much of her world. Though she couldn't help but worry about him more and more with different things and tonight was no exception.

As she lifted her glass to his speech her smile and pride both started to fade. Her arm lowered before he was done talking and she started to look around at all the faces. What on earth was going on, she felt she was in an alternate universe and she didn't know how to get out of it. Her eyes fell on Alana and she wanted to cry her heart hurt for her daughter.

She stepped back away from Charles until he was finished. She watched him and his hand shake. Something was not right, but her mind wasn't clear enough to figure any of it out. All she felt was hurt for her daughter, for her employees she loved so dearly, and all the others that this was going to harm. Her eyes stayed fixed on him even though they were fighting back tears. "What was that?" It's all she could muster without making a scene and she would not do that at his place of work and his former place.

"I... I need to go." Without another word she turned and headed away from the man she loved to try and figure out her thoughts, emotions, and what the hell was all going on. She eyed Alphonsine that woman was responsible, she was sure of it. She just didn't know how to prove it.

Default Nykto and Flamsteed, and looking around for Conley...

Jane turned back, slightly alarmed, as she heard Nero talking to Flamsteed, but by the time she caught his eye, he was back to his party persona and clinking her glass. She smiled back at him and leaned over to whisper in his ear, "Be careful what you say to Flamsteed--he's not himself, he may not react like the man you know. So don't reveal too much." Then she pulled back and slammed down her own drink, very unlike what a ladylike governess ought to do.

Then she looked around for Conley Singh-Phora again--she really wanted to introduce him to Nykto, if they hadn't already met, and besides, she thought it better to get the Doctor away from Flamsteed now.

Default Apologies for the delayed reply. RL knocked me over recently.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Well, that was true also. Sachin most likely would have been snuggling with Radhika but he was also quite sure that Conley would overthink things. The husband would probably envision someone trying to get into their house or something. Sachin decided on to say anything at this point. In any case, he was too busy staring in horror at the statue he and Conley had come across. His only other reaction was gripping Conley’s hand so that his fingernails bit into the man’s skin. Sachin would tell Conley his thoughts when they were back home.

The Ambassador was grateful to be led in another direction. Still, the memory of what he had just seen was freshly etched in his brain. Food! Just the perfect distraction! Conley knew him well. Now… where were all the sweet foods? And who was this pretty lady? Conley was right; her dress was lovely. Sachin was glad to be introduced. After all, he was somewhat of a social butterfly. “Hello, Ms. Bagnold. Pleasure to meet you.’’ Sachin arched an eyebrow in Conley’s direction. Was his husband going to be possessive and protective throughout the event? “Are you looking forward to the challenges of being Department Head?” Because… you know, some persons took challenges in stride. “Ambassador to India,’’ Sachin answered, a hint of pride in his accent. “I have been since 2091.’’ Goodness! Had it been that long already?

Absently, since his mind was still on this mind blowing fact, Sachin followed his husband’s gaze to see Nykto and Jane. He raised his free hand to them in acknowledgement. Sometime after, the loud tapping of glass grabbed his attention. No surprise that it was time for the Minister’s speech. The only thing was, Sachin was not impressed by it.

Maybe it was rude of Brody to not actually pay his current company some attention via his eyes. But he was one who rarely cared about anyone in general. Still, he was pleased with the mini sandwiches suggestion. “Thanks.” The young man reached for a plate, added two sandwiches to it and only then did he turn to give the other man his full attention. Well, well. Wasn’t Joseph the attractive one? Brody did not hesitate to take that hand, smirking slightly as he did so. “It’s quite nice to meet you, Joseph. I’m Brody. International Magical Cooperation.” Next, he shifted his hand to Gabriel. “Great to meet you as well.’’ Brody took note of Gabriel’s demeanour. Did he too not like making eye contact at first? “Definitely worth it,’’ Brody told Mariana, having just polished off one of the sandwiches himself. “Are you guys new to the Ministry too?”

You know, meet the boss, sneak a peek at the Minister, let everyone see how cute I am in this dress... yada yada." HALF of the excitement of this shindig was getting to dress up!

Natalie followed her friend's lead and got herself a bubbly drink. Despite the message they were sending with the theme of the party, she was still rather excited to be there. "What do you say," the new environmental ranger said to the auror. "Shall we try and make some new friends?" She pulled her friend back into the crowd and weaved through different groups of people, deliberately making eye contact and smiling at all the faces she saw. Who wanted to be friends with two pretty girls?

Emilia couldn't help but smile. "That dress does deserve a few laps around the party at the very least." And if Nat wanted to stay, Em would stay. That's what friends were for, after all.

Sipping her drink, the auror looked around the room, her eyebrows going up a bit at the mention of making friends. "Friends, huh? I suppose it never hurts to have more of those." And while Emilia wasn't exactly the social butterfly type, she knew it'd be easier for her to let her walls down with Nat around. Letting her best navigate them around the room, she offered her a grin. "Count me in." PAUSE. "Isn't that Cox?" Huh. Small world indeed.

The clinking of glassware gave the brunette pause and she glanced from Nat to the minister, curious to hear what the man had to say. Delightful feasts for the eyes? Well no, no she didn't see it that way. And our contributions to the Neo Alliance with which we stand. Emilia looked around, trying to read the faces of those around her, to see who was buying in to this. The speech did little to inspire hope for the new year. In fact, it made her want to leave the party even more. "...Cheers?" She looked to Nat, wrinkling her nose before taking a sip of her drink.

SPOILER!!: Joseph, Gabriel, and Brody

"Been here a few years now, actually," Mariana answered Brody, offering him a half smile. "Though this year certainly feels like starting all over again. New look, new attitude." She gestured around them before helping herself to another sandwich as she listened to the others chat. Gabriel seemed particularly excited about his job, which was refreshing to hear. She could relate and loving what you did each day was so, so important. At least in her opinion it was. Speaking of..

"Well, essentially I'm crazy about plants," She smiled a little at Joseph and shrugged. "I look after them in the greenhouses, study them, do my best to keep them healthy." Plant mama right here, pretty much. "It's the best." She couldn't have asked for a better job.

As for her place of work, well, she wasn't so sure anymore. The minister's speech put a pause on her conversation and she took a moment to process his words.
