Default Ministry of Magic Gala 2104

OOC: this event is set on January 11, 2104 - the SAME day as the Dragon Reservation field trip.
All Creatures employees would have been ordered to fall back and return to the Ministry
for this mandatory event

With the start of the new year comes the annual Ministry orientation event, arranged by the Department Heads; an opportunity for you to mix with your colleagues, the Ministry's brand new or returning employees. Though this year's event comes a bit later than usual after an extended break while an elite skeleton crew tied off a few loose ends and finished some much needed refurbishments. The atmosphere of this year's event, a suave and sophisticated gala, is not unlike that of a grand opening. Your invitation required that you adhere to the formal and elegant dress code.

Upon entering the Atrium, you will find that a table has been set up with party favours: small bags and boxes of varying quality. All bags at least contain lapel pins and name tags with each employee's job title, name, and blood status in fancy silver font. After passing through security and into the party proper, each Ministry employee will be able to find their own personal party favour thanks to the accompanying name tags, which also display blood status. The observant among you may note that the party favours are of the most supreme quality when destined for a pureblood, and diminish in this regard as they become intended for half-bloods, those who consort with muggle-borns and muggles, and muggle-borns themselves. Be sure to put those name tags on.

Chairs and tables are spaced throughout the Atrium, itself bedecked with white, silver, and black décor, leaving spaces all around for mixing and mingling. In one corner of the room, an orchestra of unmanned and enchanted musical instruments provide constant but subtle chamber music. If you pay attention, you may notice that only works by magical composers will be heard all evening. Along one side of the room, buffet tables hold a vast array of canapés and other hors d'oeuvres, and a range of beverages.

In spite of the opulence of the event, one significant change is likely to command your attention more than the rest. In the centre of the Atrium, where the Fountain of Magic Brethren once stood, a new towering marble structure now dominates the space. The Fountain for the Greater Good consists of a colossal levitating hand above a rippling pool of water, wielding a wand, and topped with Gubraithian Fire that nearly licks the ceiling. At its base, the Sign of the Deathly Hallows is engraved above the immortal words of Gellert Grindelwald: For the Greater Good.

Perhaps now it's starting to seem all too clear that the Ministry of Magic is not only ushering in a new year, but a new dawn.

Stella never been inside the ministry but she didn't think it looked like this, the place sent tingles down her spine and not in a good way. The place looked cold and dark despite it being packed with people. Biting her lip she walked towards the table and grabbed a pin and her name tag putting it on. As it read Stella Starson, Greenhouse Caretaker Half-Blood. She wanted to roll her eyes at all of this, it was all stupid in her opinion.

Biting her lip, she looked around for anyone that she knew, but she didn't see anyone. Walking from the table, she looked around the place trying to keep calm and collected but failing miserably. She needed her Ocean to calm her down, she could feel her blood boling at all of this, why did blood matter they were all equal. She hated how this was going, she could only hope it'll get better but had a feeling it was going to be a long night.

------

Serena worked in the ministry and was here almost every day, she didn't like the new look they were going for, whatever look it was. She had a feeling it was cause of the Neo Alliance and the hodded figures, but she wasn't for sure on anything. She hoped the students were okay that were at the field trip, she was worried about them. Walking towards the table she grabbed a pin and her name tag rolling her eyes at all this nonsense.

Seeing Aurora her boss, she nodded at her and gave her a small smile. This was going to be a long night, it was already a long day. Sighing to herself, she looked around for her fellow co workers or anyone that she knew. She could only wish that this went well, but she doubted it.

His Ministry, his people, and it warmed his heart to see everyone arriving in such opulence. The name tags really did compliment everyone, did they not?

Smiling to each individual that came near, Charles found himself looking for his personal assistant out of habit, but soon had his attention drawn by Accidents & Catastrophes' new Head Obliviator. "Ah, Dante my boy," he greeted someone wearily as he placed a fatherly hand on the young man's shoulder. "Good to see you this evening looking quite the dapper!" Charles appreciated the underspoken pattern. The man could appreciate a good floral now and then. "It is quite the..." he trailed off, the word 'upgrade' catching in his throat like a chicken bone. Or perhaps like the time he had swallowed a couple of yogurt covered raisins on accident. In any case, it was an unpleasant feeling and try as he might he could not get the word to surface. "...aesthetic. The design team truly put their full effort into all the changes. My favorite touch may be the Gubraithian Fire." He paused to stroke his beard a bit before turning to the man and lifting his glass towards him. "Shall we cheers then? To your promotion and all other opportunities coming your way."

There were a few more familiar faces to pass through the Atrium, like those of the new press secretary whose application he recognized while going over some documents with Fletcher. But, for the time being, Alana had his attention. "You, my dear, are a vision," he hummed as he took the young lady's hand and gave it an affectionate kiss on the back of it. "Oh? I don't see that at all." Though he did pause to give everything a look over to see if he was missing something. "Have we not all pushed for liberty and and prosperity? Some apples are red and others are green. Some are even a bit yellow. Even among the red apples there is variations in hue, but each apple delicious in it's own way." He smiled kindly at her. "You'll see, my dear. Everything is as it should be."

Ah, Simone was here as well! She had done such wonderous things with Transportation since taking it over. Truly a delight and it was so much more convenient to have the lifts and floos working once again. Though his chest ached terribly thinking of Kendra...he sincerely hoped she was well.

"Buuuuuuut, my dear. Have you met Dante? Dante is one of the strapping young eligible gentlemen here at the Ministry," he introduced while gesturing towards the man beside him. "Dante, this is Alana. One of my hard working and diligent employees and as beautiful on the inside as she is the outside."

He would try and make some rounds soon to properly greet the others, including his hardworking team. One of which was now approaching his humble trio. "Sian," he greeted with a broad smile. "Why thank you and yes it is. Red velvet." Like the cake. Finding his own humor to be delightful, he rewarded himself with a hearty chuckle that took more a toll on his lungs than anticipated and cause the man to wheeze a bit.

While absent at the previous beginning of the year festivities, Airey Flamsteed was in attendance this time. Physically, at least. His talk and gangly figure stood nearly stationary beside the new fountain as instructed to do so. Eyes somewhat glassed over and jaw set, accenting his sharp cheekbones, the Mysteries department head observed the gathering partygoers. Hands clasped behind his back, his fingers twitched involuntarily and for the briefest of moments his mouth joined and twisted into a grimace of sorts. It lingered for a moment, his eyes frantically looking around the Atrium, but soon his features returned to a stoic and controlled expression.

Overhearing the words of the young auror, Penelope, the man spoke coolly and the pureblood on his own nametag seemed to gleam. "A new era."

She'd collected her party favour (only the best!) and affixed her name tag, and was all set for some elbow-rubbing.

Such a goal had brought Sian directly to the Minister for Magic, grinning and finger-waving at any and all she passed on the way over.

"HelloOOOoo!" she greeted the man himself, in a loud and obnoxious beautiful sing-song voice, invading the little group he was part of. "Minister Hollingberry, don't you look smashing this evening." So distinguished! She approved. "Velvet?" Sian looked to the other gentleman then, and BEAMED. Whew, never a disappointment, was he? On the eyes or in general. He really was wasted on that job of his. "Mr. Zabini, always a pleasure."

Less of a pleasure was the young lady {Bazinga} also here to talk to the Minister, but Sian still shot her a wide smile, with lots of teeth, and some fluttery eyelashes thrown in. Talk about cheap shop-bought frosting. At least someone (yours truly!) was over here serving rich decadent buttercream. Mmm. "At least your skin is looking luxurious this evening. Good enough to eat!"

Appropriately dressed to the nines, she strolled in through the atrium and her eyes were immediately drawn to the beautiful, commanding statue that replaced that old fountain. She'd certainly have to get a better look at it, but first she chose the shiny name tag with her proud pureblood status listed on it and affixed it to the front of her dress and collected her fancy favour bag.

She gave the immediate vicinity a cursory glance as she proceeded further inside, catching sight of a few of the department heads. The newest ones - Laplace and Bagnold - as well as Phora. Perhaps it was because she was in such a good mood, but she did not notice their unease. Or perhaps she just chose not to acknowledge it to herself because she knew they'd comply with the changes or they could be easily replaced. Ms. Jordan-Durand found out just how easily she could be replaced a year ago.

As she approached the Minister, Alphonsine caught sight of the squib talking to him. A squib who was taking a job away from a more qualified witch or wizard. Alphonsine barely spared her a disapproving glance before turning to the Minister with a wide smile, so she could ignore the girl completely and draw the Minister's attention away from her in the process. "Charles. I think we've really outdone ourselves tonight. The Ministry looks magnificent." She was rather delighted with the impressive regalia throughout the space and she looked up at the flickering flame as she basked in the glory of the new statue.

Turning as she heard another voice speak, she nodded in agreement. Dante Zabini, she'd heard good things about him recently and she was glad to hear a dignified wizard speak in such appreciative tones about the new era that was being ushered in. It was a good time to be a witch or wizard and embrace their magical heritage. "Isn't it just?" she commented on Zabini's words. "And it's only the beginning. Good things are coming. It's reason to celebrate."

Ah yes, and there was the department head she wanted to see tonight - no, it wasn't Sian. While she certainly had her well-earned place in the Ministry, she always managed to give Alphonsine a headache. Still, she was in such a pristine mood that she had no problem giving the other woman a smile and greeting, "Good evening, Sian," before moving onto greener pastures.

Alphonsine had caught sight of Simone and gave her a smile that hinted of self-satisfaction. She did look stunning with the backdrop of the new and improved Ministry behind her. Perhaps she could get her a glass of champagne and they could toast to the greater good together.

It was just as much of a statement as everything else that had changed with the atrium. Not that he had any complaints about any of it. "They most certainly did, and I would have to agree with you about the Gubraithian Fire." He would have went on about it, but a toast for that official, no-longer-on-a-trial-basis promotion of his had been suggested. Gladly he raised a glass to that.

The sudden appearance of the young woman was, well, ... she was a Squib, right? Dark eyes focused on her as he let her have a moment with the Minister. Even with the woman speaking quietly, he was fully aware of what she was saying. It caused that smile that was on his face to lessen. The Minister's response to her brought it back though, which was convenient for the very moment he was formally introduced to the woman. "Pleasure to meet you," he said to her pleasantly, holding out a hand for the sake of being proper.

Alphonsine Rosier and Sian Llewellyn's presence came at the perfect moment. Dante beamed at Alphonsine. "If the Gubraithian Fire is any indication, then the future is sure to be a bright one." He would have raised a glass to that had everyone present had a drink at hand. But, of course, there would be plenty of time for that this evening.

Normally he wasn't rather fond of how loud his department head could be, but in this moment he welcomed it. It was a good distraction from the charity case among them. "Good evening, mademoiselle," Dante returned her greeting smoothly. "You look quite ravishing." He knew the woman loved being buttered up.

The woman that joined them just moments ago did not go unnoticed. Normally he wouldn't have said anything, but his chipper mood and a quick read of her nametag prompted him to reply to her greeting. "Doing quite well. And you, Miss Pembrooke?"

As he stared at the fountain, the blond wasn't paying attention to his surroundings and probably wasn't doing the best job at monitoring his face. But he straightened up quite a bit when he heard someone approach the fountain. A sideways glance and taking in the sight of Saul brought him some relief. Though he couldn't admit to knowing the man very well, they at the very least were in the same department. Surely they shared the same thoughts about these changes, right?

"Evenin', Saul," Frankie muttered quietly to the man, his eyes still focused on the fountain. The phrase For the Greater Good glared back at him. Was it hot in here, or was it the flame that was burning above them? "What a ..." -- there was a noticeable pause that occurred as he tried to think of the right word -- "interesting ... design choice."

It was at this moment he turned his head to take in the man's facial reaction to it all. In doing so, he couldn't help but notice the man's nametag and how it looked a million times better than his. He had a snarky comment that was at the tip of his tongue, but he refrained the urge to let it slip out of his mouth. This was ... all of it ... it just wasn't right.

Charles was always so sweet to her and her sister and tonight was no exception, "Thank you Charles, you are too kind." Maybe it wasn't going to be to bad and with Charles, there was no way anything bad would happen or at least she thought until the next sentence came out of his mouth and Alana just stared at him. He was not seeing everything going on and it was clear.

"Everything as it should be?" Her hand dropped to her side as she just stared at him. What was going on? She couldn't understand his thought process and just as she was going to they were interrupted by a department head, Sain, Alana thought her name was.

"My skin?" Alana looked down? She had thought she looked quite pretty this evening, but she hadn't thought about her skin, not really at least. "Thank you?" She really didn't want anyone to be thinking about her being good to eat and she gave Charles a little look. There was something about her words that really made Alana just take a step back.

As Charles introduced her to Dante she lifted her hand to shake his, "The pleasure is mine. It is nice to meet others in other departments." She was trying to memorize all the faces and names she saw since she did work in the minister's office she wanted to know the ones coming in and out.
"This is quite the event this year." Interesting was not even the right word she felt. Her eyes scanned the area for her mother, she hoped maybe she had come with Charles, but for now she hadn't seen her.

Taking a bigger step back as Alphonsine seemed to make sure she was pushed out of the little group. That was enough, she was not going to be ignored nor did she spend all the time proving herself for a group of people who thought they were better than her stepping in.

"Do you mind??" She glared at Alphonsine, "I was in a conversation with..."

"No Alana, she doesn't mind, not at all. These ladies are just excited Alana, and maybe Alphonsine just didn't notice she so rudely pushed her way in." Victoria had been there, she was of course Charles' plus one, but she had stopped in the ladies room for a moment. When she had come out she was not surprised to see Alphonsine right up her boyfriends behind like it seemed like she was being for the past year or so. She had never had an issue with Sain, but she could if the two didn't back up just a tad.

It did feel good to speak her mind a bit more now that she didn't have to be the professional department head to some employees. "Charles, I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long." She turned to all the group that seemed to be crowding around him and then looked at the new decorations. What the hell was this? She gave Charles a look, but knew not to speak her mind right there.

"Shall we go refill your drink and grab me one as well." Staring straight at Alphonsine as she spoke to Charles. Victoria wasn't the jealous type, but she did not have a good feeling about Alphonsine and she wasn't going to hide it any longer.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Having worked at a crop farm for several years, there was no reason for Daichi Katharos to own a suit. Which meant that especially for the mandatory Gala, he had to buy a new one. The suit was a simple design, it didn’t stand out and that was exactly what he had went for. It had been years since Daichi had last stepped foot in the Ministry and from only a quick look around, he could tell that a lot had changed since that time.

Entering the Atrium , Daichi stepped up to the table with party favors and grabbed one of the small bags before opening it up. He pulled out a ministry pin and immediately pinned it on his suit on the opposite side of his breast pocket before pulling out a name tag. A frown played on his face as he read “Half-Blood” under his name. He looked up after pinning his name label on his suit below the pin and took note of the employees around him sporting the same name labels with their blood status shown. This was definitely a new thing because he could not remember that his blood status had been out and in the open for everyone the see when he had last worked here.

As he entered the party, the man immediately noticed that the fountain of magical brethren had been replaced by another statue. The design was, pretty decent from afar. He walked closer to check it out , having a terrible feeling in his stomach as he got closer and closer. The words ‘For the greater good’ and the Deathly Hallows symbol edged on the statue did not sit well with him.

The ministry had changed but was it for the better? He had to find out.

If the Ministry Gala had not been a mandatory event , Kevin Hirase would not have been found inside the party. But alas, here he was marching through the Atrium , passing new comers without a word with his head held up high. He took one of the bags on the table and pinned both pin and name label with Pureblood written under it on his suit.

He did not waste any time and went straight for one of the buffet tables, grabbed a beverage before turning around to survey the people in the room instead of ‘mingling’ .

He was keeping Charles in his peripheral vision, occasionally giving a glance over to the Minister of Magic. Clearly his attire was a major hit. Did no one love his Suave purple suit?...no matter. With many others surrounding the man, now it seemed near impossible to confront him about his earlier thoughts. Saul would do his best to keep his eye on the man through the night though. And he'd still not seen Bain Goldwasser.

His attention was pulled from watching out the corner of his eye when he heard his name. He turned his head to see Franklin. "Evening Franklin." He stuffed his hands into his trouser pockets and looked back toward the fountain as his colleague mentioned it's design. Catching the long pause between words. "Well, that's a rather tame word if you ask me?" He shook his head and tried to smile under his nerves.

He turned away from having Charles out of his peripheral vision and faced Franklin. He saw the Auror look at his nametag and while it did say Pureblood it did exactly what he feared. Made him stand out amongst the crowd. Saul was always one to keep to himself mostly and only engage when needed. He looked at Franklin's and saw how it matched the lesser quality to many of the other nametags he had seen before at the entrance. He set down the party favors at his feet. Regardless of his position due to his blood status Saul still feared his job was in jeopardy. "I assume you're thinking the same thing I am?" He wanted to just blurt it all out loud. Yell that this whole gala was a sham. It felt like a trap more than anything.

”Mr. Zabini,” came a voice from behind his shoulder. Like always, Bain had been circling in the background, making sure the security measures for the night were in place. They didn’t need another floo-pocalypse like last year. But it was the appearance of the young Obliviator that had drawn him forward. ”Just the Wizard I was hoping to see.” He offered a hand to the young man and if he took it he would notice Bain was a bit cool to the touch. Perhaps the man needed a bit more iron in his diet? He was, after all, looking remarkably pale. Even for him. Minister He nodded in Hollingberry’s direction and then gave Alphonsine a large smile, which for him meant one that twinkled in his dark eyes, but still didn’t show any teeth below his magnificent mustache.

As for the squib? He ignored her. She’d had enough of his attention the last time he had stopped on Level 1 to talk to Fletcher. ”When you have a moment Mr. Zabinin, I’ve love to talk to you about a job opportunity.”

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

The fact that this event was mandatory was the only reason Dalton was present. Probably the only reason a lot of people were present, although his reasoning was a hatred of formal events rather than hatred of the Ministry's new direction. Of that, he didn't really have much of an opinion. He didn't even know what his heritage was, to be perfectly honest, and he wasn't sure he would ever find out.

Little did he know that there would be name badges with it etched on, of course.

Approaching the table, he sought his name from the rest and picked up the tag, holding it close to his eyes and squinting as he inspected the halfblood label etched underneath. He didn't know if he was supposed to feel something more than a sort of half-sated curiosity, but he didn't. He supposed the Ministry had their ways of figuring things like that out, and since he'd never known his parents it didn't matter to him their blood status.

Pinning the badge to the lapel of his rather scruffy suit, (it wasn't that he didn't have money any more - rather he was earning a decent wage, but he'd always had to save for what he'd had and buy a lesser version, and he'd never broken the habit. That, and the opportunity to wear a suit were thankfully few and far between, he didn't see the point in having a nice expensive one) he turned to pick up a glass and then survey the décor.

Harper loved getting dressed up, but today felt lackluster. She hadn't even invited Léonne because, well, she wasn't sure what to expect and if it wasn't an enjoyable party then she wouldn't want her partner to suffer through it. And although most parties could be enjoyable with the right people, she felt uneasy about this.

Maybe because the vibes weren't 'right people' ones. As a halfblood, she had no preference for blood types, and as a person generally, she thought the idea of status because of ones family lineage absolutely barbaric. As barbaric as these nametags stating what people were. She just didn't see why it mattered!

Deep breaths were required as she pinned her badge on. Then she turned to face the room, offering her sisters friend Dalton a smile (though he hardly looked like he noticed her) and forgoing the food and drink offerings. She was sure if she tried to hold something her hands would shake, and she didn't have much appetite now she'd seen the new look of the Ministry. Not at all.

Could they get this over with? How long did she have to stay before she could go home to Lé?

Adam had pulled out one of the two decent suits he owned. He’d paired it with his new glasses. They were a step up from the old coke bottle ones that made him look like a bug, but they still contained very very thick glasses and the purple tinting was new. It helped a little with the glares, but his eyesight was still horrible. In fact, had been standing at the table for a while trying to find his bag. There didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to the outlay. Not alphabetical. Not by Department. Not even by time worked here….so what was he missing? He rubbed the spot above his left eyebrow wishing slightly that he wasn’t alone tonight or that he had found his work wife friend Laurel. She was always nice and kind and helped him out when he needed it.

”Ahhmmm…” he sighed loudly. Then he realized that he wasn’t alone at the table. With a very heavy German accent he asked, ”Excuse me, kan you help me find mein...” he waved his hand over the table.

The young man figured that he’d run into his Department Head soon enough and was in no hurry to find him. Having interned at the Ministry a few summers back, Brody was sure that Phora would not have forgotten him. He zoned in on the food. “Any recommendations?’’ he asked the person he had come to stand beside. No, Brody hadn’t even glanced at the said person.

He couldn't help but gulp as he looked over at the fountain one more time. The threatening atmosphere of the event just wouldn't leave. He supposed and even hoped that the foreboding nature would dwindle down as more people arrived, but that certainly wasn't the case. If anything, the additional arrivals added to the thick tension. "Joseph.", he said, in return for the woman's introduction. After a few moments, he pointed at his name tag and added, "As you can see." He held out a hand for the woman to shake.

Joseph watched as another man walked over towards himself and the woman. As the stranger stuffed his mouth with stuffed mushrooms, Joseph could feel his stomach rumbling. Even though he was absolutely starving at this point, he simply couldn't muster up the appetite to eat as much as the man. "Good... I suppose.", he answered and grabbed a single mushroom. He chewed on it for a long time without swallowing, which was mainly because it tasted funny, which he put down to his bad appetite and the mood of the gala. "I'm Joseph.", he introduced, holding out a hand. He kept forgetting about the name tags.

Yet another man walked over towards himself and the buffet table. Joseph seemed oddly popular tonight. "I suppose the mini sandwiches look nice.", he replied to the man's question. Speaking of the sandwiches, Joseph grabbed one and bit into it. His appetite seemed to have returned. The refreshing taste of cucumber had seemingly returned it. he noticed that the man hadn't looked up at him as he asked for recommendations. 'Bit rude.', he thought, but he supposed that was just something to do with how Joseph had been brought up in an immensely posh household and had to attend etiquette classes for 7 years. "I'm Joseph.", he introduced, and held out a hand. The name tags had slipped his mind once again.

Gabriel was unphased by the "crowd" that quickly gathered at the buffet. He nodded politely at the other young fellow who joined them, then finished eating his stuffed mushrooms so he could reply to the other man...Joseph, he said his name was. "Gabriel," he replied, shaking the man's hand. "Not a mushroom fan, I see." He noticed that Joseph seemed more interested in the fancy sandwiches instead. Also noticed, thanks to the nametags which spared them some boring small talk, that the man worked in the minister's office.

Gabriel really didn't know what went happened there.

"What a press secretary do?" he asked, trying to change the subject from the weird new fountain with the fire atop. Was it a stupid question that he would have figured out the answer to, if he'd given it thirty seconds of thought? Probably... He wiped his hands on a napkin, then surveyed the table so he didn't have to keep making eye contact.

Things were definitely not right at the Ministry, or in the Wizarding world as a whole if Dylan had really wanted to think about it. In general, though, her focus had mostly been on the Ministry lately, and the fact this event had been stated to be mandatory only had made her that much more concerned about it all. Just the tapestries were disconcerting, considering the former Claw had most definitely read about the apparently not so ancient history from the previous Wizarding wars. It had all meant shed chosen to let Aramis’ mother watch over the kids while she’d been here working, instead of having Ari and the twins in the daycare. Or having her own mother babysit them, considering she suspected the bookshop wasn’t going to be a safe place again any time soon ether.

But she was there, dress rather subdued given what she’d worn to previous Ministry galas and not only because she was a year older. Staying away from the center of attention was rather a safety thing, considering she was well aware that her nametag wasn’t reflecting what she imagined the ones who had enabled the redecoration of the room would have liked. Half-blood. She felt just as uneasy as the woman near Adam, she imagined, as she observed their exchange. The thought of helping her coworker out had occurred to her, but interrupting wasn’t really something she generally did.

-----

This was definitely not her dad’s Ministry. The observation had been made from nearly the first moment Skye had stepped into the atrium, quietly making her way through the security clearance and over to the table holding the party favors. It had almost made her wish she’d taken her brother up on his offer to escort her, after she’d declined the offer from her father as well. She definitely didn’t want either of them to see this. Even if it appeared the one little word on her nametag, pinned unobtrusively on her dress once she had acquired it, meant she was to expect better treatment than others. She had never thought of her blood status before, let alone felt like she was better than others just because of being pureblood.

Besides, at least she figured her cousin was around here somewhere, and she had told her father and Fin that before they had allowed her to leave for the Ministry in the first place. Not that she had any idea where exactly he would be, since she hadn’t seen him at the security checkpoint. The blonde had merely wandered over in the direction of the refreshments, selecting a canapé before turning to gaze at the others gathered nearby.

The familiar - and yet strangely unfamiliar - voice of Airey Flamsteed drew Penelope's eyes away from the name tag and over to him.

No matter how many years she had been out of Hogwarts, there was always the reflex to still refer to him in her head as Professor. But that urge to do so didn't manifest in this moment. Something was off here. Something in the way he carried himself felt so foreign to the Flamsteed she remembered from school.

Sure, there was a lot of time between then and now. Sure, she didn't exactly hang around with him much, despite working at the same place. And sure, running the Mysteries department was a much different job from teaching Astronomy. But even so...could all of that change her former professor this much?

"New isn't always good. But you believe it will be this time?"

She was walking a fine line, or at least, it felt like she was. One part of her very much wanted to destroy all of this rubbish. Burn it all to the ground. But the other part, the one honed by years of training, realized what a foolish act it would be. Causing a scene right now would accomplish nothing at all. Who knew how many people were in on this anyway? Clearly enough that they felt comfortable doing all of this, and that wasn't a good sign.

So fortunately for her, the self-disciplined side was mostly winning.

Especially since there were a few more people gathered around the table now too. She took note of the two women - one of whom, based on her name tag, shared a first name with her, which was pretty cool - and a man who apparently worked for Flamsteed.

This was certainly not what Regina had in mind when the Minister had mentioned renovations over the wireless. The symbol and the words underneath the massive new statue made her history nerd brain wave equally massive red flags in her head.

Other than her eyes widening slightly, she tried her hardest not to react. She simply grabbed the bag and carefully pinned the name tag (Regina Amstern, Gift Shop Attendant, Half-blood) to her dress before moving towards the statue. As much as she was put off by it, she couldn't help the curiosity driving her to get a closer look.

And it seemed she wasn't the only one who wanted to check it out. She stopped beside a man she didn't recognize, so he was either a new hire or one of the many people who worked here that she didn't know. And maybe that was a problem now, not knowing very many people. So maybe she should make an attempt at conversation or something.

"This statue is an interesting change, isn't it?"

Jane was wearing the same gown she'd worn for last year's gala--she saw no point in investing in a new formal every year, and in her experience, most people only paid attention to what they wore themselves. Besides, she figured that her escort for the evening would make enough of an entrance. Turning to look over her shoulder, she saw that Dr. Nykto had paused for a few minutes and had fallen behind her--probably he'd become distracted by something or other. Never mind, she would wait for him.

She walked up to the table covered with small boxes and bags and picked up hers, then stepped back to look at its contents while she waited. She smiled to see the pin, but her smile faded as she pulled out the elegant silver nametag and read it:
Text Cut: Jane's nametag

Pureblood

With a slight frown creasing her brow, she absently glanced around as she pinned it on, and when she caught sight of the new Ministry fountain, the frown grew ever so slightly deeper. Things were definitely going wrong here; her misgivings had not been wrong.

Still standing by the table, Penelope looked out into the crowd, unsure of where she should go next. There weren’t many faces she recognized as this was her first day at the ministry. Was Mum here yet? Mum was sure to want to introduce her to people. Maybe there would be some old acquaintances from Hogwarts and uni out there. Trying to start up conversation with acquaintances when they were socializing with people who they knew more closely was always awkward though. Hmm? Penelope brought her attention back to her current location when she heard someone speaking to her. Honestly, she had been a little lost in her own head until the man in the green suit and purple glasses asked for her assistance. He wanted her help finding his name tag? Despite the heavy accent, Penelope was still able to understand what he wanted. She turned to face him and put up her best effort to be social and helpful. ”Oh, yes, of course.” Except he hadn’t told her his name which made it impossible for her to start searching. ”Sorry, what’s your name?” It felt a tad awkward to have to ask him and she wondered if he had somehow mistaken her for someone he knew.

Though it had been several years since she had last seen him, Penelope recognized her former astronomy professor from her Hogwarts days. Something did seem a bit off with him tonight, but perhaps like her he was also just uncomfortable at parties. While their student-professor relationship had been a somewhat interesting one due to the man’s affinity for the type of classroom activities that somehow always resulted in her injury, she had always been rather fond of him due to his enthusiasm for his subject and shared interest in pet rocks. She had even given him Boulder and once held a pet rock adoption fair with him. ”Live long and prosper, Professor Flamsteed.” Penelope raised her hand in the vulcan salute and smiled. She wasn’t sure if he would recognize her or not after the fourteen years or so that had passed since she graduated from Hogwarts, but he would know what that greeting meant.

Sorry, what was that about a new era? Weird. Maybe there was more to Flamsteed’s strangeness tonight than simply not enjoying social functions. She looked at the woman who she identified as sharing her name in a confused way as if to express how odd the man’s words were.

Odd that the man who seemed to be one of Flamsteed’s employees seemed so stiff around him. Was Professor Flamsteed a terrible boss? She didn’t really have him pegged as the type to be so. But what did she know of how he interacted with his subordinates? It had been years since she had seen him, after all, and the school setting could hardly give her the complete picture of how he interacted with colleagues.

Yasmin always loathed stuffy events requiring such elegant formal wear. Not that she attended such events often, but each year with the Ministry reminded her that she needed to rethink her wardrobe. In the end, she had gone with a sleek pant-suit, as she could not be bothered fussing around in a floor-length gown. Perhaps she could suggest the next orientation be held in a bowling alley or better yet, a discotech. Not only would that be far more fun, but perhaps it could foster more camaraderie and inter-departmental mingling, something she always pined for.

Stopping just short of the table bearing gifts, Yassi looked over the party favors with delight before searching for her own. It very quickly became clear to her that they were sorted by bloodstatus, something which made her insides turn. Only when she found her own gift (marked by her status as a half-blood), did she look around the room for someone to speak to. Company would surely dissolve the strange, twist she felt in her stomach. It was only then that she settled next to Dalton, her eyes lighting up to match the warm smile she easily wore to great him. "We must stop meeting this way," she teased, laughing rather loudly (though that wasn't something she could ever help).

She took her eyes off him for moment to look around the room for face she recognized. Seeing her department head, Simone, standing near, Yassi waved exuberantly in her direction. This year, Yassi hoped to know her better. Perhaps beyond matters of business and efficiency, though this was something she could tell Simone valued in high regard. As she continued her sweep around the room, her eyes fell upon this new fountain structure in the center of the atrium. The words inscribed at its base were a cause of discomfort once more.

She returned her gaze to Dalton, wringing her hands. "I am not sure that I'm a fan of this new fountain." Her discomfort was quite evident in the way she held herself. Perhaps there was no need to state the obvious and yet, Yassi wondered if others felt the same.

SPOILER!!: Kevin

He did not waste any time and went straight for one of the buffet tables, grabbed a beverage before turning around to survey the people in the room instead of ‘mingling’ .

Tomasz quietly stepped into the atrium. He had every intention to make way for one of the corners of the room, but stopped when he found himself in front of the table of party favors. He eyed the array of gifts curiously, tilting his head from one side to the other as he sifted through them in search of his own name. At first, it did not occur to him that the gifts were sorted by blood status. In fact, he had instinctively moved to look through the smaller gifts first, thinking the size had to do with the rank of their jobs. As a lowly security guard, it made sense that Tomasz would find his name within the smallest pile.

And he did.

What was curious about the matter, however, was that just below his name, he found the word 'muggleborn'. Muggleborn was something that Tomasz was not. Or rather, there was a chance, but... He was ....... not so sure. He had never given anyone this information, for he, himself, did not know it. Did the Ministry have information that he did not?

It was unsettling and Tomasz did not want to wear the nametag. Rather than pin it to his person, he kept it in his hand and made his way towards the edge of the atrium where he began to notice the changes to the space. Finding himself feeling uncomfortable, he reached his hand into his pocket, instinctively wrapping his fingers around his wand.

It was only then that he realized where he had ended up: near the buffet. He hadn't realized that he was gravitating towards it, but it always seemed to end up this way one way or another. Still feeling unsettled, he held off on grabbing a plate and instead turned towards one of his colleagues. Though he did not cross paths with Kevin Hirase too much and did not know his usual mannerisms, Tomasz found the way he was surveying the room to be a sign that maybe he also felt something was ... off. "You are finding something unusual?" He asked, skipping pleasantries all together without realizing he had done so. His eyes wandered over towards the group consisting of the Minister for Magic and his own Department Head. He would say hello later, maybe.

Glancing at Nat, the auror frowned a little. "Well, not exactly the environment I'd want to welcome you in to, but here we are." She nudged her best friend and shrugged. "What do you say we grab a drink?" It'd give her something to do with her hands, which felt restless by her sides.
Natalie had been immediately welcomed to the Ministry with a name tag... that displayed that she was most definitely a half-blood. Being a half blood witch had never bothered her before. She had heard horror stories of her evil great-grandmother who sought to destroy her own daughter because she had fallen in love with a man that "tainted" the family blood. But that was sort of just a story. Wearing a name tag with that label on it in an atrium that had the image of Gellert Grindelwald and the motto of "for the greater good" on it... Well, that was a bit unsettling.

Natalie's blue eyes cautiously observed the tapestry as she walked closely to Emilia, her roommate and best friend. Thank Merlin her best friend was an auror, right?

A drink? "Yes, I think that is a wonderful idea." Natalie finally turned her attention to the actual party and she saw everyone in fancy robes and dresses. It WAS rather delightful. She had always heard about these Ministry parties and had always been a little jealous of Em every time she got to go. It had taken her hours to pick out her outfit.

"Is it always like this?" Natalie asked Em quietly, her eyes darting to the tapestry of Grindelwald again.

Dressed in a new black suit for the formal occasion Oliver arrived at this year’s orientation in the atrium, wishing he had invited a plus one. However with last year’s floo chaos in mind maybe it was better to mingle alone since odds we’re high that his healer skills would be needed before the night was over, and it wouldn’t be right to leave a date hanging, because he had to work. Pinning the required stuff from the gift bag to the front of his suit Oliver let his eyes wander around the atrium noting that Charles was here along with Alana, Regina and the new press secretary as well as Alphonsine from his level, but no Fletcher yet. Oliver briefly stopped to pick up a handful of canapés that smelled like pizza before heading over to take a closer look at the new attraction that had taken the Fountain of Magical Brethren's place.

The statue for the greater good looked ghastly, but still had a strange appeal somehow that he couldn’t decipher why. Spotting a blond woman; Stella who looked quite ready to hex someone Oliver headed over to her with a small smile pursing his lips as he offered "Good evening, do you care for a pizza canapé? They are delicious." Trying to be tactful he chose a safe card. "Lovely dress, by the way I'm Oliver." Now what had ruffled her feathers?

In and of itself, it wasn’t that remarkable. But it’s the information that it contained was. He glanced over at Sachin. ”I don’t think you’ve met my husband, Ambassador Sachin Sing-Phora.” He didn’t let go of Sachin’s left hand even as he waved at him in an introductory fashion. ”Aurora Bagnold, the new head of Magical Creatures.”

Aurora was munching on her second or was it third shrimp canapé when she caught and returned Peggy's nod in passing as her good friend headed off to mingle in another part of the atrium. She was about to follow suit and go over and speak to Serena when she was stopped by Conley who was accompanied by his husband Sachin. Smiling warmly at them both, she accepted the compliment about her dress with a slight head nod. "Good evening, why, thank you Conley! I picked the dress out to make a good impression at my first orientation in charge." Turning her blue eyes and attention to Sachin she greeted warmly. "It’s a pleasure to meet you Sachin! Ambassador? For what country if you don’t mind me asking??" If it was for the country she hoped then maybe Aurora could get assistance with translating some foreign letters about creatures.

And then he heard the one voice he was hoping not to hear tonight. He stiffened slightly, trying to fight his flight instinct. ”Boss, nice to see you…” he said vaguely although truthfully he wasn’t at all nice to see him. The last few times Airey had done nothing but yell at him and threatened to have them all fired.

Laurel arrived at the atrium in a stunning red off shoulder dress with matching glittering accessories. She was there alone, since she had had a fight with Aaron just before coming here. She felt bad, since she knew it wasn’t his fault. Sigh, she had to make it up to him later when she got home from this mandatory event, explaining about her Inner Eye’s many visions off late.

Feeling very glum Laurel wasn’t in the mood to mingle with anyone really until she saw her boss, and Adam with new glasses. Maybe they could raise her mood and distract her from thinking about how she had stormed out of the house? Approaching her boss and Adam after picking up three glasses of bubbly she smiled. "Good evening Airey and Adam! Do you two care for some sparkling cool cider?" With her bosses recent threat of firing them if they didn’t repair and clean up all the orbs she commented with some satisfaction. "We managed to repair most of the prophecy orbs and clean up the floor Airey so the prophecy hall is back to what it was before the incident." She was going to say rock golem went on a rampage but decided against it. Turning to Adam she asked gesturing to his glasses. "Have you bought new glasses Adam?"

Eureka had her arm wrapped around Cox's. She stood momentarily at the entrance, the first thing to catch her eye was the fountain. It was... different. Chilling and solemn. She instinctively looked up at her companion, did he see that?

Not wanting to slow down the flow of people, she led them both to the table with the gift boxes. The nametags were the second solemn thing. Having your heritage on a nametag was extremely uncomfortable and discriminatory, wasn't it? It had been a long time since Eureka, the activist soul, did something stupid to make a point. The last she remembered was in school, no, no, no-- it was when she wanted to free her grandfather's house-elf but the poor creature begged her not to do it, so she ended up helping them around the house whenever she visited (which was still annoying to the creature, but she was around 15 and didn't understand).

Now, she was getting that same feeling again. Hers had 'Pureblood' on it, and the word seemed mocking for some reason. With a small sigh, Eureka slipped the nametag into the bag with the rest of the goodies. Not going to wear it unless someone literally pointed a wand at them.

Again, looking at Cox silently... in they go??

***

Luther, on the other hand, had no problem wearing his nametag with the 'Pureblood' etched on it. He wasn't enjoying the insinuation it was emitting, of course, but he felt he should focus his attention on the big *inserts non-PG13 word here* fountain. He was standing there, observing it. It was hard not to feel intimidated by it.

That wasn't any of her concern though for now, so after another few moments admiring the work she made her way over to collect her pin and nametag.

Sarangerel stuck her nametag and the pin to her dress, a feeling of unease settling over her. Was it the party making her feel uneasy, or maybe, just maybe, the information displayed on everyone's tags?
She took a deep breath and straightened out a nonexistent crease in her dress before walking over to the buffet, keeping an eye out for her flatmate, Stella, who would no doubt be fashionably late or any of her new colleagues. Now was the time for good impressions after all.

Especially that monstrosity they'd placed in the middle of the atrium, where the Fountain of Magical Brethren had once stood.

Turning to the woman next to him (Sarangerel) he gestured to the new monument they'd put up, raising an eyebrow. "Well that is...something, isn't it?" he said. Now it was time for him to do what he normally did at parties - making small talk. Trying to get a feel for how everyone else felt about this nonsense. Counting down the minutes until he could duck out of here and go home. The usual.
Moving towards the buffet, Luther caught someone echoes his thoughts. He went to stand on the other side of the woman. "Yeah. Quite... interesting. Do we know who exactly issue the change?" Was it the minister? It was a little hard to believe.

Darcey hardly needed an excuse to wear fancy dress, she welcomed any excuse to dress up for the evening. And what better place to wear such a beautiful dress to than some Ministry event where everyone got to know what kind of blood traitor you were?! Darcey Fontaine, LLM, Pureblood, bloodtraitor, was in the house! It was almost like a family reunion where everyone was upset with her for having a child with a muggle. They would have loved the new set up at the ministry.

Besides, how often did she get to see her boyfriend all dressed up? She linked arms with him and grinned, already having a blast seeing him so far out of his comfort zone. "Don't you just love what they've done with the place?" Darcey rolled her eyes, having power clearly didn't mean having style. But to each their own.
She straightened out her expression before addressing the woman (Peggy) who had joined them, a bright smile already in place. "Good evening." A Department Head, she noted. It didn't hurt to know the important people...in this climate. "Quite the party you've organised."

Sarangerel smiled politely at a few strangers as they passed by, thinking maybe she ought to have paid a little more attention to how others make small talk. She'd much rather discuss the climbing conditions in the Alps or what kind of clouds they had seen this morning, perhaps the art of candlemaking. Anything but dreadful small talk.

"It is...very impressive.." Sarangerel agreed with the man who had joined her (Javier), nodding slowly as her eyes went back to the statue once again. But Muggles had their fair share of highly impressive statues too. Grandiose gestures weren't exclusive to blood supremacist Wizards.

Turning to see who else had joined them in their statue observation, Sarangerel offered the newest arrival, Luther, a smile. "Whoever ordered it, it must have been quite the refurbishment." An odd thing to spend what she assumed to be large amounts of money on. Surely there were more pressing issues than statues honouring outdated ideologies.

Olly hated this.

Standing in a corner by herself, she chose to simply observe the scene for now. There was absolutely no way she’d have asked Schuyler to come with her and right now she didn’t want to speak to anyone. If she didn’t absolutely need this job, she’d be out of here. Okay. That wasn’t completely true. Over the years she’d also developed a sense of being responsible for her department as well.

She couldn’t just abandon them either.

Which was why her eyes kept darting around to make sure her employees were all doing okay. Or at least appeared to be doing okay. Were ANY of them really okay? She couldn’t imagine it was comfortable for any of them to be walking around, wearing these types of name tags. And being surrounded by, well, everything.

....she was going to have to stay until the very end, wasn’t she? Until every last one of her employees had gone home.

This was going to be a loooooooong night.

Default Hi friends and friends to be
lives in a hobbit hole || Ern and Touz's Nuzzle || roflysst || looking at a seed packet

Was she late? Probably a little.

Stopping in the entrance way, Stella lifted eyed the nametags and lapel pins. That was new. Wait until she told Cohen. She picked up her set, and attached the shiny high quality nametag to her dress and then made her way through security and inside proper. Her flatmate was around here somewhere. Stella hadn't bothered arranging a date this year so hanging out with Sarangerel was the plan unless she met someone new and interesting. Or old and interesting. She didn't mind a little seasoning.

If she noticed the changes to the fountain and such, Stella didn't make it obvious. She would absolutely recount it all to her brother however. At least if it came down to it they could go back home to France. Though she had heard things were happening there too just a little less..... this.

Maybe a drink first and then she'd go and listen to the non-muggle music.

Default Nero is giving random refills, feel free to interact

Abandon all hope ye who enter here

After a spirited discussion with security about whether or not a rose was considered dangerous contraband, Nero came bounding towards Jane tugging one of his gloves back on with his teeth, while the other gloved hand slipped the stem of the rose back in the breast pocket of his suit coat. The bloom, a bright red spot breaking up the monochrome pinstriped suit. To say the suit was vintage would be a gross understatement. In the century and a half since he had owned it, the doctor never found a garment that came close to this tailored perfection.

"I know you would rather be working." Nero said, wincing slightly as he pierced his wonderful suit with the provided pins. His pureblood status on full display "But we are expected to have a good time." He let his gaze linger on Ms.Howard a moment, hoping she understood that they would be watching for every frown, every forlorn glance, to see who might be a problem with the direction the ministry was going.

Turning away from that first table, Nero was all smiles and charm as he guided Jane towards the refreshments. They might need them on a night like this. Handing the woman the first glass of bubbly, he took a second one as his blue eyes were taking in the sight of the fountain. Though he remained smiling, he found himself drawn towards the ominous fountain, his mind falling back through the years. As he took a step away from the refreshments, Nero leaned back, and grabbed the rest of the bottle. You never know.

Pouring more champagne into the glasses of random people that he passed by, along with giving empty pleasantries, Nero made his way to the marble structure at the center of the atrium.

"I..I've seen this all before.." The world was white noise around him. That symbol. Those words. What year was this?

Farewell happy fields,
Where joy forever dwells: Hail, horrors, hail.

In case anyone was wondering, Jake was deeply uncomfortable, but more relieved than he'd ever been that he did not - as a general rule - wear his emotions all over his face. The nametags, he'd not immediately realised what it was about them that made him so unsettled, not until he'd taken a closer look at the decorations inside, and especially the... fountain. It was easy to ignore the name tag on his own chest - Auror, Jacob Upstead, Pureblood - and his thoughts were instead entirely on Becca, and what was written on hers. It had barely been a few minutes, but already he wanted to regroup with his wife, and keep her by his side.

Setting down an empty glass, Jake began to make a circuit of the Atrium, fidgeting slightly inside his, restrictive and too-warm, but very fancy suit. The Auror salary had been extremely beneficial, but with six kids still at home, each more demanding than the last, not to mention still providing for the oldest three over holidays (less of an issue this term, granted), Jake still didn't have the spare funds to go shelling out for fancy gala clothes. Renting was a waste, none of his everyday attire fit the bill, and anything that might once had worked was far too shabby.

This suit had been borrowed from Dale, who was the same height as Jake but not as broad in the shoulder or chest. In the end they'd had to adjust it enough that his brother had just let him keep it, as a late gift. Much as Jake had appreciated it then, he hated the thing now.

Straightening the lapel pin he'd also affixed to his front, Jake paused in his when he reached two of his Law Enforcement colleagues. He hadn't intended to stop, but the younger lad's words had caught his attention, and Jake took the opportunity to pretend he was grabbing a bite to eat, and casually glanced over at the two. "... You didn't get a name tag, Tomasz?" He shot him a small smile, intended to convey he himself wasn't happy with this labelling system, but... who knew how it came across. And then to the other, "Kevin, good to see you here." Small talk was the worst, but Jake was interested in the answer to Tomasz' question, how all this was coming across to everyone else, except he also hoped they wouldn't actually launch all the way into that discussion right here and now. It was a bit of a quandary.

So these were the changes the Minister had mentioned in his little broadcast.

Honestly, some updates to the décor were much needed. The Ministry had been horribly out of date even before he’d started working here and it had only gotten more dated as the years went by. Especially that stupid Fountain of Magical Brethren, which they may have well as called the Fountain of Everyone Stroking the Wizard’s Ego for all the simpering faces on it. At least from here, the new fountain erased all of that. Now, if only it wasn’t surrounded by all these ridiculous tapestries of Grindelwald, a wizard who wasn’t fit to shine the muggle Queen’s shoes, much less have a portrait in a hall of government.

Ronan stopped by the table holding the ‘goodie bags’ and reasonably quickly found his own, letting out a slight ”huh” he when noticed that his pureblood status was directly under his name. Now, since when had Minister Hollingberry cared so much about blood status? It didn’t track with his experiences with the man so far and it made him wonder if that Rosier woman that had suddenly found herself stuck to the minister’s boots in the past year or so had something to do with it. He quickly cast the thought to the back of his mind for later examination as he carefully pinned the nametag to his suit under his own pin, while the accompanying lapel pin went on duh his lapel, his ornate cufflinks and signet ring catching the light as he did so.

That little exercise in….what could that be called, even? over, he decided to examine the new fountain more closely. It could actually be an improvement over the previous fountain, even pretty, if it weren’t for two things: the fire hazard created by the Gubraithian fire and, just as importantly, the symbol of the Deathly Hallows along with the words of the aforementioned Grindelwald. This could only end badly, as every other attempt to do something like this in both the wizarding and muggle world had. And require careful maneuvering to get out of alive and standing on his own two feet. Thankfully, he had the perfect poker face. One that he was employing right now, in fact.

A good thing, considering he was now trying to figure out whom all, exactly, was in on it while starring at the fountain.

Milo never really looked forward to these Ministry events, not that he hated them or anything. It was just that he'd been with the Ministry for a while now that the orientations had grown boring.

Until last year of course.

Last year when his sister - Kendra Jordan-Durand, for those unfamiliar with their familial relationship - was unceremoniously sacked after what he was sure was sabotage. He grew even more certain of this after the past year when everything transportation-related was ~miraculously fixed~ with no more issues. He had a very hard time believing that his sister was as incompetent as she was so clearly being painted. And in addition to all of that, the subtle and not-so-subtle changes over the past year were rather unsettling in a way he couldn't quite put his finger on - but he was beginning to work out what some of them implied.

And on top of all that, Milo had a niece and two nephews at Hogwarts. He was well aware of the broadcasts put out by the Minister regarding the students there. He was also aware that there was no communication with the students, that they weren't even allowed to come home for the Christmas holidays, AND that his other sister - the parent of said niece and nephews - was out of her mind with worry for her children. He had half a mind to let the Minister know exactly what he thought about what was deemed best for the student population.

So as a well-dressed Milo Jordan entered the atrium to attend the Ministry gala, he was angry after a year of built-up frustrations that continued to escalate.

A nametag? Milo supposed he could see the sense in having nametags at a function like this one, especially considering that there would be many new people here, mingling and trying to get to know one another. But it didn't escape his notice that underneath Milo Jordan, Gobstones Division Manager it was written Pureblood. "Unbelievable," he murmured under his breath as he pinned it to his lapel. Who cared? Did that make him more qualified to do his job than someone who wasn't? No, it didn't.

He waved off the party favors as he stepped inside. He might have been eager for something like that in years past, but he did not care about that today. Because it was just then that his eyes focused on what now replaced the fountain of magical brethren. Milo stared at the fountain, his eyes travelling up towards the fire near the ceiling as he approached. "For the greater good? They cannot be serious..." he told no one in particular. But it was just then that he heard the woman who worked in his sister's former department, Yasmin, speak her thoughts to another man, Dalton.

"Not a fan? Do you know what this means?" Milo was incredulous. He was well-versed in Magical History to know this was not good at all. Where was the Minister? Milo had every intention on coming here to meet his new department head, Peggy Laplace, but first he had a few things he needed to say and some questions that needed answered.

it's either adhd or wrackspurts <3 <3 lily luna's mom has got it going on

As far back as Kazane could remember, she had dreamed of starting a career and finding somewhere to settle down and create some consistency and security for herself. A life of constantly saying goodbye seemed to be exactly right for her parents, but her? Not so much. She would have been happy to stay in the mountains of Uganda forever if it weren't for her parents urging her to not settle in the first place she lived in for an extended period of time. You've got give yourself some space to grow, Kaz. Sure.

So here she was, dressed in a slinky black number she'd borrowed from her friend Lenore. Ready for her first day of corporate adulthood, even though she felt more like a student than ever around all these high-profile professionals.

She went through the motions with almost militaristic posture - a symptom of her nerves - and her wand was carefully tucked into a disillusioned holster on her arm. No need to sacrifice form or function when one had magic, hmm? She felt some warm and fuzzy feelings upon receiving a nametag and lapel pin - this was real, and she was about to become a part of something bigger than her.

Kazane Sullivan, YATI, pureblood. A nice ring to it, no? She was too consumed by her surroundings to pay any mind to the part about her blood-status...until it came time to grab a party favor. The six-foot-five-in-heels woman naturally gravitated towards the less-fancy party favors, assuming the nicer ones were for higher-ranking individuals and of the sentiment that she would be lucky to get anything at all as a trainee. Imagine her surprise when she found her name on a bag among the nicest set! She had to investigate for a moment, confused - and then the warm fuzzies abruptly vanished.

Oh.

Kazane barely managed to keep a polite smile on her face as she took a glass of water.

Except...only moments after making that decision? An eccentric man poured bubbly not-water into her half-empty glass. What in Merlin's name? Not wanting to be rude, she waited for the man to pass before vanishing the contents of her glass and refilling it with a quick aguamenti.

She walked around, trying to summon the confidence to mingle now that the high of starting something new had been dashed. Eventually she found herself in front of the ominous looking fountain next to a stranger (Ronan). She nodded her head towards him and then towards the fountain.

"What a statement! Is it new?" She kept her tone upbeat and neutral.

Well, Alexander could not help but snort laughter at that. Humor was the only thing he had left after seeing that statue "You think they overdid it or could have gone even more out there in design" He murmurs to Darcey. Though with the statue it's hard to top what they did. Guess it would have been some extremely good luck to not have to have a conservation with anyone, not in DERP. Would have been nice not that he is complaining about it or anything. He can make small talk since as Darcey pointed out it was a Department Head(Peggy). Ah, not one he has rarely talked to but that was mostly his fault since he was holed up in his office or home or dealing with oceanologists

"Evening, quite the party indeed. How have you been?"

Maybe he should have lead Darcey to anyone in DERP first but anyway not the time to think about stuff like that and she(Peggy) seems nice enough.
