Fountain for the Greater Good

Halfway into the Atrium, walls adorned with heavy ruffling tapestries that animate between the Sign of the Deathly Hallows and Gellert Grindelwald himself, gleaming in all its golden cold marble glory is the Fountain of Magical Brethren for the Greater Good. The large fountain depicts golden figures of a wizard, witch, centaur, goblin, and a house-elf with jets of water spouting out into the fountain below. The focal point of the fountain are the witch and wizard, the other beings looking up at the pair with adoration. The towering fountain, symbolizing the everlasting sovereignty of wizardingkind, depicts a colossal levitating hand above a rippling pool of water wielding a wand spouting Gubraithian Fire that nearly licks the ceiling and engraved on the base the Sign of the Deathly Hallows above the infamous words of Gellert Grindelwald: For the Greater Good. Gaze at the lovely fountain as you make your way to the other various locations within the Ministry.

Peacock blue ceiling with golden symbols moving over it, and polished dark wood floors, the Atrium serves to welcome all visitors to the British Ministry of Magic and is the place all Ministry workers must pass through to get to their respectable departments. If you look closely at the windows overlooking the atrium, you may catch a glimpse of Ministry employees, namely security, observing all those who pass through the atrium.

Not far from the Fountain of Magical Brethren for the Greater Good is a small stand that serves coffee and a danishes to workers too busy to stop and have a proper meal of approved blood status. The large room is incessantly full of busy employees, but only a few ever care to stop and chat you up; our wonderful Welcome Wizard who is there to assist the public, and the security workers watching out for the leery. You should hope to only ever be stopped by the former, else you may find yourself taking an unexpected trip to the security office. Every hour on the hour the voice of Minister for Magic, Charles Hollingberry, echoes through the Atrium reciting the mantra "We only want freedom. The freedom to be ourselves. For the greater good" in a firm but nurturing tone.

It had been... a very slow day. In all the excitement of her first few weeks, she'd forgotten that office work could be very very dull when everything went smoothly. Of course, she refused to start hoping things would go south because that's the direct opposite of her job and obviously she wants things to go well but...... wow. The boredom.

She'd never been bored when she modeled. Even during the downtimes. There was was always something.

And so, strolling out earlier than she normally would - there was nothing to do - she walked slowly across the atrium and frowned at the sight before her. Danishes were so unhealthy. Where was the healthy snack bar? The tea shop? The freshly cut fruits and vegetables stall? What?! GASP. They will all DIE EARLY and have INDIGESTION if they kept this up!

Theophilus was HUNGRAY. (As always)

His stomach had been rumbling at his desk when he was signing off on some paperwork and all he had been able to think of was a good old perfect pastry. Of the Danish variety and boy did he know the BEST place.

And he didn't even need to leave the building!!

So here was was, stocking the basket he had brought with him from his desk with TWELVE pastries to get him through the next few hours of hard slogging work before he hit the town for dinner with some friends. "Gotta get the good ones. Gotta get the beauuutiful ones. The yummy ones. The SCRUMMY ones. The yum yum scrum diddly UMMMtious ones." Yes... he was singing to food.

This was normal.

Oh.... no. No no no.

Wasn't there a health awareness program at the ministry? This is was appalling. Of course, everyone could choose what the wanted to eat and rightly so, because free will and all that, but Bambi Acklery was QUITE displeased at this blatant unhealthy marketing and people... singing to their lipid intake.

Ariadne would never grow up eating this way. She would not allow it.

She did not want to bother the man, but she was also very curious about his life choices, so Bambi took steps forward towards the smell of buttery baked goods and friend things and...... she'll admit, it did smell very nice. Even if it gave her a headache just thinking about all those calories. Unhealthiness! ... Old habits.

"Hello."

To say Theophilus was getting in the groove of his food song would be a lie. He WAS the groove. Theophilus Darcy had even began to bust out his salsa moves whilst singing at the pastries he had placed in his basket. This. WAS. The. Life. Ugh, he was working his dream job as well as eating his dream food on the daily. Could a Darcy man want any more than that?

Could they?

Hint: the answer was no.

The joyous look on his face fell when he heard a voice, but it instantly picked back up as he put the basket aside and took the lady's hands and began to dance with her. "Helllllooo"

It was a few days into her new job and Layla still wasn’t sure what to think of it. It seemed to be working out well for her family; Ariadne was enjoying daycare and wasn’t crying every time her mums left her anymore and the family got to enjoy being together in the evenings and the weekends. On the other hand, it still wasn’t Layla’s scene and she couldn’t help but to feel completely out of place. It would take time she was sure of that.

Having been sat at her desk for a while and after many a conversation about the upcoming Quidditch World Cup which quite frankly Layla didn’t have a care in the world about, the former Ravenclaw took a break to stretch out her legs and find somewhere to sit that wasn’t the break room in her department or the food court which was always so loud and bustling. The Atrium wasn’t so busy this time of day and so the twenty-nine year old headed down towards the little coffee stand that was near the fountain as she had been so busy rushing around that morning that she had forgotten to eat any breakfast and her stomach was telling her so. Having a coffee was completely out of the question for she never drank the stuff but nobody would judge her if she had a small pastry just to last her until her lunch break later on in the day, would they?

Okay. Her wife would definitely judge her if she knew but thankfully for the blonde she was nowhere near.

She waited in the short queue for her breakfast not really paying attention to anything or anyone around her, her trademark straight-faced expression plastered across her face.

Olly was SO glad that the Quidditch World Cup was over.

It wasn't like she, as the DERP department head, had been particularly involved in the planning of the event - nor its execution - but it had still been everything anyone had talked about for months. And in addition to that, the number of people wandering around London had increased tenfold during those summer months. It had been a LOT. And it had also been why Olly had mostly stayed at home, away from it all, any chance she got.

It was a lot more quiet again, now.

Finally.

The Ministry was of course still buzzing with people but that was something Olly had got used to over the years. At some point it had even turned into a welcome background noise. Which was why she was currently sitting by the fountain in the middle of the atrium, eating the sandwich she'd brought from home. It was relaxing to be here.

Mai - and whomever would like to join

Having arrived by floo from his place in Chelsea, Vale had made sure to take plenty of time to clean off his 3 piece suit before venturing into the Ministry. He had some time before his scheduled meeting with Phora and decided to pop by one of the café stands. While he had time to kill, he wasn’t exactly happy that there was a line. He considered just going up to the DIMC lobby and getting a cup there, but then he remembered the last time he had gotten coffee from there and quickly resigned himself to waiting because the sludge that they claimed was café up there was not fit for human consumption.

gritandgrace 07-28-2019 12:43 AM

Mai sighed when she saw there was a line. This was the only good coffee stop in the whole place. At least in her opinion. Brits know their tea, not their coffee. Nevertheless, she's grateful for the caffeine intake...even sub-par caffeine.

Hmm..."So little options, so much time." She whispered to herself.

Krel Ansell 07-28-2019 05:24 PM

Just because he had time, didn’t mean he wanted to stand in this line. No, he had other things he'd rather do, like oogle at the young security guard standing across the room. But if this line didn't move soon, he'd not have time for that. Pulling a silver pocket watch from his waistcoat, he glanced at the time and sighed. As he was looking, a young lady joined the line. He was going to ignore her when she whispered. Uncertain if she was speaking to him or not, he asked, ”Pardon?” He tucked the pocket watch into a pocket and tugged his suit coat back into position.

The line moved as two people received their coffee and Valentin moved forward. They had better have cappuccino after this wait.

OUT of the mist!

That was-

Oh.

The gate.

It was the gate.

She hurried up, almost stumbling over her own feet, eager to get out of the mist and off the Hogwarts grounds. Actually, “eager” didn’t even cut it. The feeling was so much stronger. There. She touched the gate once she was close enough, elated to be feeling the metal under her fingertips. They’d made it. They’d survived. Or at least she hoped that nobody had stayed inside.

”Let’s....use your portkeys.” Olly finally said, voice still shaking slightly. That was all she could say for now. They portkeys would take them back to the Ministry.

To safety.

OOC: Hey guys, thank you so much for playing and being active and just being awesome in general. Go ahead and post your charries making it out of the mist and using their emergency portkey; it will lead them to the Atrium of the Ministry. We can reconvene there.

Once Archer saw the gate, something like hope opened up inside of him. Beyond the gate felt like safety, and once he was through, portkey in hand, he felt his feet touch down in the Atrium. Safety. They were all coming back to the Ministry. He hoped some of the samples would provide valuable information, otherwise would it have all been for nothing? All of those... those... things. He was anxious to get back home and see his wife. To see she was pink, warm, and breathing. His beautiful children. He needed them.

It felt like a boulder hitting him in the back, his legs simply collapsed and he fell to his knees. Was it that they were finally, hopefully, safe? "Bloody hell." was all he could say for the minute.

Ginevra 08-04-2019 09:58 AM

Lucy arrived a few seconds after Archer, her breathing ragged and her long red hair looking rather messy. She was very relieved to be back at the Ministry and she quickly inspected her pockets to see if her samples had made the trip without any damage caused. Lucy saw Archer fall to his knees. She walked over to him and silently placed her hand on his shoulder in a show of solidarity and comfort.

"I hope things are 'back to normal,'" Lucy thought to herself as she awaited the return of her co-workers.

After the Out of the Mist "adventure"

Safe.

That was the first thought that came to Olly's mind once the world had stopped spinning around her. Somehow she'd managed to stay upright, even after the portkey-ride but only because she was leaning against the fountain right now. Would it be very un-Department Head-like to put her whole head into the fountain for a few moments? Just for...some peace and quiet? To calm down?

Her thought process was interrupted by Archer's words however and she dismissed the idea.

Or postponed it anyway.

Watching employees come back from Hogsmeade, Olly waited a few moments longer before finally addressing them. "I-" Yeah, she was supposed to say something, wasn't she? "You can...you can all go home. Take a few days. Or the week if- if you feel you need to." Honestly, if it was possible, she herself would just go home and stay with Schuyler and Evie for about a month. "Just...leave the samples with me." They'd brought them, yeah?

There was absolutely no way she was in any condition to send a Patronus right now (she had problems with that on good days) so she took a deep breath and formulated a quick memo to the Minister, telling him that they'd returned and...that she was down here by the fountain. And that she needed to speak with him.

The sudden appearance of people in the atrium was quite alarming, however, if one looked at the Frenchman, you wouldn’t see his surprise on his face. He had been under the impression that the Ministry didn’t allow portkeys into the Atrium, for surely if they had been appartating they would have arrived in the designated area for that…

He watched the male dropped to his knees and as Valentin stepped out of line as a rather disheveled lady shot off a memo. Reaching out to place a hand under Olly’s elbow in an attempt to help steady her. No need to have everyone falling over. ” May I be of asseestance?” he asked in his accented English. ” You look like you 'ave been een an altercation wiv a poltergeist.” He glanced back over at the male who was still on the floor. ”Or pairhaps zumthéng worse?”

Kimothy 08-06-2019 03:36 PM

Okay, so Kat still really disliked the feeling she got from using portkeys. It still made her feel a little bit sick but at this point, she was feeling all sorts of numb.

The moment she felt her feet hit the ground, Kat nearly stumbled onto the person (Valentin) whom she was sure wasn't a member of their department. "Sorry, sorry..." the blond retaliated, offering a quick forced smile at the French man. She could probably use some rest. Just like Olly, Kat's head was spinning. She would have been courteous if it weren't for the mist.

Having collected her division's data and samples prior to entering the Hogwarts ground, Kat offered them to Olly. "This is from my entire team." If anything, she was glad she didn't lose all their samples. At least, the very least, they took something back from that horrendous experience. She hoped they were enough, to make their near-death experience worthwhile. "Be kind to yourself too, Olly." Kat knew she had also had it worse, like Archer. She knew Olly had other department head duties to fulfill, but Kat felt it was necessary for her to also hear that.

And bloody hell was right, Archer. Where was Alexander Brian and his bottle of wine?

sweetpinkpixie 08-07-2019 04:39 PM

EVERYONE *waves*

Having been alerted the moment their emergency portkeys had been activated, Charles had dropped everything he was doing - sorry Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France, but the failings of their translation charms were making the conversation difficult to follow anyway - and burst forth from the Minister's Office with his golden robes billowing behind him.

And his pace only quickened when he saw the state of his Environmental personnel.

"What happened? Is everyone accounted for?" He did not ask about the missing children. His eyes told him the answer plaguing his thoughts and his heart sunk. "I want all of you seen by a healer." He would call in a favor from St. Mungo's and get a few of their finest over to ensure that there was nothing out of the ordinary with this brave team.

Ginevra 08-08-2019 05:01 AM

Lucy had just given Olly the samples she had collected when the Minister came rushing towards the group.

"It was such an ordeal, Minister! Right from when we arrived, it was a very eerie atmosphere. We decided to tie one end of a rope to the gate and then we grabbed the other end of the rope as a safety precaution. Oh, we cast Bubble-Head Charms on ourselves beforehand. Anyway, Archer let go of the rope and fell to his knees like something was troubling him when the mist, I'm guessing, began to grab him and drag him. Alberta's Freezing Charm helped saved Archer."

Lucy paused and continued on.

"Then, through no fault of her own, Olly let go of the rope. I think she saw something that scared her. We cast all sorts of spells until we had a window of escape out of the grounds where we arrived here."

After telling the Minister her memory of events, Lucy looked around and began to mentally count to see if everyone was back.

Lislchen 08-09-2019 01:05 PM

"DON'T!" Olly flinched and took a few hurried steps away from the man (Valentin) when he touched her elbow. She didn't like to be touched unexpectedly by people she didn't know on a regular day. And she most definitely didn't like it right now. Not after everything they'd just gone through.

She would have said more (most likely things she would have regretted tomorrow) if Kat hadn't chosen that exact moment to hand over her team's samples. "......thank you. You can...you can-" Go home was what she'd been meaning to say. However, Olly was interrupted in her thought process by the appearance of the Minister of Magic himself. Who was trailed by the memo she'd just sent off, which, naturally, had turned right back around after she'd sent it off. Almost like a boomerang. Hopefully it wouldn't hit him in the head.

Or actually, hopefully it would.

Her eyes narrowed until she was basically glaring at the Minister. Somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear Lucy briefing him about what had occurred on the Hogwarts grounds. She should probably say something too but she was too......angry. He'd just sent them there. Without proper protection. Without any real sort of warning as to what they would encounter when they'd get there.

Also, why were there so many people around her still? Couldn't they all just leave? Leave her alone?

sweetpinkpixie 08-11-2019 02:22 PM

one memo to the face coming up lol

Truth be told, his inquiry had been more aimed at Olivia Olly than any of her employees. As department head, it was only natural to expect the debriefings from her and therefore it took him a moment to shift gears and give Lucy the undivided attention her recant deserved. Which meant that he did not miss the manner in which Olivia Olly's eyes narrowed at him.

Well...if looks could kill, right?

Unfazed by this, however, the Minister began to run his fingers along his five o'clock shadow...only to have his eyes widen upon the description of something physically grabbing at the employees. That...that had never come in any of the reports from Hogwarts, not even from his own grandson. Could the mist be a living and evolving organism? Or was the case more likely that there was something in the mist rather than the mist itself inflicting such terror. The only way to know for certain would be to send another team in to investigate, but clearly that was not to be Environmental Protection.

Olivia's Olly's scowl notwithstanding. Though if she needed a scapegoat to work through things, he would gladly take that fall. At least initially, he was no one's emotional punching bag.

"I need a full report on my desk as soon as the healers have cleared you," he reiterated, his brilliant blues circling around to each of the DERP employees and...falling on one of the French ambassadors? ...he would deal with that in a moment. Though that really went without saying. Flourishing his wand, Charles produced a silvery opossum from the tip of his wand that went immediately scampering off towards St. Mungo's - no time to waste in going through the systematic hierarchy of using the on-call phone at the healer station. They owed him a personal favor anyway.

"Monsieur Roux, if you would please make your way to level 5. I am sure they are waiting your arrival there." Here was not where his assistance was required. "Ol---" Just as he was about to rattle off a few more instructions, the persistent little note that had been following him and his pacing around managed to flutter right in front of the Minister's face and folded neatly over his nose and eyes like a blindfold.

Vale’s hand instinctively reached out to steady the female who had bumped into him. ”Reste là bas – steady on there," he said, offering what he hoped was charming and comforting smile, while his mind was trying to figure out what exactly had these people all been doing?

Vale pulled his hand back holding both hands up near his head in the universal sign for not meaning any harm. He had merely been trying to help. Apparently his help was not appreciated. ”Pardonne-moi,” he said simply. He kept his mouth shut, despite the urge to add that he had just been trying to help. He tried to remind himself that she, whoever she was, was probably not upset with him so much as…whatever was going on…right?

Valentine had been about to turn away and go back to the cart for his cappuccino, leaving the ministry workers to work through whatever this was when a) the Minster himself arrived and b) an employee started spilling her guts about the events. Valentine wasn’t dumb and he sure wasn’t about to wander away from what appeared to be very interesting information.

Ropes…bubble head charms…things grabbing at them…grounds? Where exactly had these people gone? What had they done? What had the British Ministry done now? He wondered if there was anything he should be concerned about? Anything he should report back to his superiors in France. He glanced around at the ragged group, thinking about how they all looked like they could use a drink. His attention was brought back to the Minister as a corporal patronus shot off in a streak of silver-light.

And then, the Minister was….was he – dismissing him?! Valentine raised a well groomed eyebrow at the man, clearly not afraid to show his displeasure to the man. He glanced down at his wristwatch and noted he still had about 20 minutes before he was supposed to meet with Monsieur Phora and his new rep. But Valentine was no fool and clearly he was being repudiated. Making a sweeping bow, both hands out, Vale said, ”As you wish Ministre.” He was apparently not going to get that cappuccino. Very well, office sludge it was. He tried not to make a face as he walked off.

Lislchen 08-16-2019 08:54 AM

.....and then the memo she'd sent hit the Minister right in the face.

Which turned out to be a whole lot less satisfying than Olly might have wished for. Clearly the earlier events had dampened her ability to appreciate this level of pettiness. She was tired. And angry. And shaken to her core. She just wanted to go home and curl up in bed. Maybe with Schuyler and Evie. Maybe on her own. She hadn't decided yet.

She knew the former was probably the healthier option.

At the mention of healers, Olly pulled herself together for a moment. "Yes." Was the tremor in her voice detectable for the others too or just for her? "Thank you...and....take however long you need." She felt guilty for sending her employees into the line of fire like this. Despite the fact that she'd had no way of knowing that something like THIS was going to happen.

Amid DERP’s colorful arrival, had one been paying attention to the Fountain of Magical Brethren, they would have noticed that the jets of water spurting from the tips of the witch and wizard’s wands sputtered. The stream changed from strong and steady to soft and babbling and back again. The water coming from the tips of the goblin’s hat, the centaur’s arrow, and the house elf’s ears faltered and then stopped all together.

As the memo hit the Ministry of Magic in the face, a sudden and unusual silence emanated from the fountain.

Did someone shut the fountain off?

Lucy was just about to depart in order to get checked out by the healers when all of a sudden the normal sound of water flowing from the Fountain of Magical Brethren changed its tone. She turned around and saw the fountain had ceased working.

"Er...why is the fountain not working?!" she asked the group at large.

French. Right. Kat didn't understand any of that, but she did mutter a thanks for both Valentin's concern and translation.

Kat wanted to sit down somewhere. Anywhere. She could even just do that on the floor at this moment, but everything seemed to by in a whoosh when the minister arrived. She wasn't in the best mood to have a conversation with the minister, but didn't want to seem impolite so she merely smiled to acknowledge his presence. Let Lucille do the talking even when it should have been Olly's job.

Speaking of Olly, she didn't look so well. Kat gave Valentin an apologetic look for the way her boss lady acted. It had been a rough day. Likewise, women were being women in here. Women attacked by misty hands were obviously in the worst case scenario too.

The blond didn't even notice the fountain until Lucille pointed it out. Under normal circumstances, Kat would have been concerned. Right now, she was simply drained and stressed and had no idea what was going on.

Yes, well, Charles had dealt plenty with the Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France (of which he still sorely butchered the pronunciation) enough now to know that its personnel had few qualms with showing their displeasure when there was a disagreement. Truly was water off the duck's back at this point, and the Minister was capable of producing said feathers if it were necessary. He would clear the situation up with Conley later at their staff meeting.

He was also genuinely concerned that Olivia Olly may have her breakfast out on the floor for display for everyone sooner rather than later. As much as Charles was desperate for those reports, the well-being of his personnel was a priority at the moment.

Well, actually, the memo being removed from his face was the priority...so he peeled that from his brow and gave it a quick glance. "Ah, well...message received," he said to no one in particular as he pocketed it and then moved a bit closer to his department head. The instinct to place a hand on her shoulder, fatherly in intent, was something difficult to resist but somehow managed. "I'll need a report by tomorrow afternoon," he stressed gently, though surely she could understand the urgency in the matter. "See if the healers encourage taking the rest of the day off," he added with a small smile. "I'll hear from them directly if any of you need it."

Meaning they did not need to inform him, they could simply go.

But before he could finish that thought, his attention was drawn towards the fountain itself.

"Flocking fwoopers...what now?" he muttered under his breath while smushing his cheeks between his thumb and fingers. He hadn't been informed of any sort of maintenance on the fountain today. "Just...you all go see that you're tended to," he reiterated while going through his mental checklist of what ELSE he needed to look in to by the end of the day. "Bit of maintenance, surely."
