Default Astronomy: Lyra [Legend, Light, & Lyrical Magic]

The Astronomy Classroom is pleasantly warm tonight, candlelight flickering low as moonlight streams in through the glass dome above and the tall stained-glass windows that surround the circular space. The dome itself, charmed and centuries old, has been enchanted to shift and adjust ever so subtly throughout the seasons—like a great cosmic eye always looking skyward. Tonight, however, something feels ... different. A slender slit has opened in the uppermost section of the dome with starlight pouring through this opening seeming more concentrated than usual. It's as though the dome has become a great magnifying lens—or better yet, a pair of oversized loupe glasses, like those worn by old wandmakers and jewel appraisers. The effect bathes the entire room in a gentle glow—cool silver blended with warm candle-gold—so that despite the late hour, it feels curiously bright and alive, like the cusp of dawn.

Arrayed across a large round wooden table beside the storage closet are string instruments from across the globe—from lyres and lutes to zithers and sitars, from handheld harps to ukuleles—each one's strings catching the candlelight like threads of spun glass. There’s something reverent about their presence, like artifacts displayed in a museum or offerings at a shrine. Very curious to an Astronomy class to be sure.

Professor Burbage floats mid-air near the table, admiring the craftsmanship of the assembled instruments. Her translucent fingers hover just above the curve of a worn banjo, trailing through the air as if stroking the memory of music rather than the instrument itself. A wistful smile ghosts across her face—rare and unguarded. Lullaby time was a sacred ritual in her household once upon a time… her husband’s voice low and sure as he strummed the guitar while seated in the plush chair in the corner of the nursery, their children tucked safe and drowsy beneath patchwork quilts. She doesn’t speak of it, but the memory is stitched into her expression.

"Come in, come in," she trills softly. "Find yourself a seat and settle in. Try not to trip over your own feet."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Usually, Dio was her Astronomy buddy. However, this year around it would be Hermy which in Kritti’s opinion, was just as great. Throughout the walk to the Astronomy classroom, she had her arm linked through the Laramore girl’s. With each step, her anticipation for today’s lesson grew. And when she set her gaze on the setting of the room that evening, she couldn’t help but fall right in love with it. Candlelight, moonlight, starlight… oh my!

The instruments caught her attention too, making her lift an eyebrow in curiosity. She recognised them but the sitar stuck out for reasons, one being her dad was an expert at playing it. How many time had she been lulled to sleep with the serene notes from Arun Joshi’s sitar? Then there was Aunty Sarika who loved meditating on those notes.

The seventh year was almost reluctant to disturb Professor Burbage; it was obvious from the look on her face that she was reminiscing on some good things. But then the ghost spoke up, and Kritti seized the opportunity to reply. She couldn’t ignore her favourite professor, after all. “Good evening, professor! It’s lovely to be present for another one of your lessons.” She waited so Hermy could offer her own greeting before they went off to find seats.

After an extensive learning on her first term regarding things she needed to do or not do, with some meetings with Feirgrund throughout the year, Kara was determined to make her second year that much better. She could do better. She had gobstones to look forward to as well, hopefully making a spot on the team this year.

Astronomy though she wasn't so sure about, thinking about her conversations with her dormmates last term amused her and she wondered if it truly was reasonable to get privatized lessons with Burbage. Not that the Astronomy tower was a hike, but sometimes with the late-night lessons, she'd much rather be completing them from the comfort of her pajamas.

"Good evening Professor." She blinked a few times to adjust to the concentrated lighting that was streaming through the slender slit, the gentle glow bathing the entire room. "Well tripping over my own feet wouldn't be an issue if the lighting..." Kara murmured under breath, trailing off. Although Burbage being a ghost meant her hearing was likely ultra sonic, so it wouldn't matter how quietly she spoke.

Granted the fine art of chocolate making was more up her alley than Astronomy but the stars, planets and all that went along with it were lovely in their own right. She wasn't a top student in class, not even close if she were to be honest but that didn't keep her from enjoying each lesson and doing the best that she could. Even in her final year it was still all about learning all that she could.

"Good evening Professor." Vesper greeted Burbage with a light smile as she took in all the different string instruments. Well this was curious! Certainly not something she expected to see up here in the Astronomy Tower. "Hello, hello." A small wave was given to her fellow seventh year and fellow lioness (Krittika and Kara). Without wasting anymore time, Ves found herself an empty seat and settled herself down into it.

This was a subject Zephyr really enjoyed. Stars and planets and space in general were pretty cool. But he also really liked the fact that he got to be up later than normal. Even if it made him a little more tired the next morning, he liked staying up late. There was something about the night time that really energized him.

The Ravenclaw entered the room with a smile, pausing a moment to take in the lighting of the room from the stars above. Then he noticed Professor Burbage by a table with...instruments? How interesting! What would they be using those for? "Good evening, Professor Burbage!"

He passed a few other students like Krittika, Kara, and Vesper, who'd already arrived, and they all got a smile too before he found an empty seat to sit in.

Xerxes wandered into the Astronomy classroom. He took a moment to stare in wonderment at the beautiful glass dome up at the ceiling. He then looked around at all the students sitting in their seats, waiting for class to begin. He didn't know any of them yet, but that wasn't surprising. He was a new student, after all.

Xerxes chose an empty seat right near the front. He then began unpacking his bag. He took out his Astronomy textbook and his telescope. He also unrolled and brand new and completely blank star chart, all ready to be filled out if needed.

Xerxes noticed a ghost float right through the wall. The sight startled him a little and he wondered if this was specter was the ghost of Astronomy Tower. But when she greeted the class, Xerxes realized that she was the Professor of this class. "Good Morning, Professor." he said, greeting his new teacher.

This was one of the classes that Rory had most been looking forward to, because she found space to be rather fascinating. And pretty. Honestly, she was looking forward to most of the lessons here, and seeing how different things were from when she was at Beauxbatons.

Entering the classroom, she was immediately transfixed on the glass dome above them, before turning her gaze towards their teacher. "Good evening, Professor," she said before taking her seat. She remembered that her mother had been terrified of ghosts when she started school, but they didn't bother Rory at all.

She offered a small, knowing smile before turning back to the instruments once more.

Mr. Amstern,” she said warmly. “You have the look of someone peeeeeeeeeerfectly in tune with the rhythm of twilight. I suspect you're one of the few who find the late hour a delight rather than a demand.
Her gaze drifted to where his attention had flickered—the instruments, polished and peculiar, catching stray starlight. “Curiosity suits you, dearie. We'll be putting it to use shortly, I pooooooooooositively assure you.

Well now,” she said with a smile tugging at one corner of her mouth, “unless time has unraveled and rewound itself in the stairwell, I do believe we’ve skipped straight through breakfast and tea to find ourselves firmly planted in the evening.” Her tone was light, not unkind, and much more amused than admonishing. “Still, Mr. Cadwallader,” she prompted gently, floating a little nearer to peer at him over the rim of her spectacles. “I rather admire the optimism of greeting every hour as morning. A clean slate, a bright beginning, a perfectly blank star chart. Though I CERTAINLY hope you have not slept the whole day away and thus the good morning.

Ah, a goooooood evening to you too, Miss Bay,” she greeted with a serene, airy lilt, gliding a touch closer to the transfer. “Still settling in just fine, I hope? I do imagine the past month has felt rather like being dropped into someone else’s dream—new halls, new faces, and Peeves hurling inkpots at your head.

She tilted her head, eyes lifting to the dome as if sharing in Rory’s quiet awe. “A beauty, isn’t she? The sky never quite looks the same twice… though I suspect that’s a big part of what draws us to it.”
She paused and then in a quieter voice, “Dooooooo let me know if anything feels a bit too new. Transitions can be tricky little things, and I’d be dreadfully cross with myself if one of our brightest new stars felt adrift.

Professor Burbage floated toward the center of the room, the soft glow of the candles flickering through her translucent form as she paused midair and her robes billowed ever so slightly as if caught by a breeze only she could feel.

Let's begin, shall we?” she began, her voice carrying that dreamy musical lilt that made even the simplest questions sound like they were plucked from a poem, “before we let the sky do all the talking tonight…” She looked around at the gathered faces, a spark of fondness in her gaze while she lifted both her eyes skywards to the starry canvas above them. “What was the first OOOOOOOOOOR one of the first constellations you ever learned about? And more importantly, especially if you simply cannot recall the first but there IS that one that memory cradles, do you remember why it stuck with you?

Hermione hadn't missed her brother this much since he had started Hogwarts years ahead of her. Now Dio had graduated and became a responsible adult in the real world away from her. It was nice that she at least had her sisters by her side. Even though she'll eventually be left behind as the sole Laramore in a couple years time. But enough sulking, she was in a good mood when she arrived with Kritti to Astronomy class and greeted the Professor and other classmates. It was like another homespace for her, looking at the stars as her parents always took them on nightly stargazing adventures.

Hermy's smile was present even at the first question, which did tug on something in her. Her first constellation. The early memories of her looking up while her Apapa adjusted the telescope with Daddy. She was sitting with Dio and Thena on a blanket while she drank her juice from a sippy cup. Most of the words her Apapa shared were lost since then, except her old name.

Hermione raised her hand and awaited her turn to speak, "Hermes. The constellation sticks out to me, because I was named after that. It's not as noticeable in the sky as the others, but is visible from now until January and known for its unique shape. My middle name, Sirius, is a part of the Canis Major constellation. Knowing that my name has a specific tie with the stars is what sticks out for me." There were other reasons why, but she wasn't that open to discussing her personal memories in front of everyone.

Mmmm….what was that, now? Had class started? Because Kayla had just been getting herself a nap. Professor’s fault for having classes so darned late. Had they covered the instruments and why they were there yet? Oh, constellations. Okay, but that didn’t explain the instruments. Or anything, really, but she’d gotten used to classes that started off in exactly this way. Even if it was frustrating and she didn’t get why professors did it at all.

The Gryffindor first year yawned and stretched in her chair, nearly tipping it and herself over before giving her answer. ”Libra, the scales. I remember because it’s my zodiac sign, not that I really believe in that stuff….” No, people made their own destiny and all that.

Not even in the shadow of sweet confections.” She gave a graceful sweep of her hand toward the seats, the candlelight catching in the filmy edge of her translucent sleeve. “Settle in, dearie, yes, settle in. We’ve a bit of magic to coax from all these lovelies before the night is done.

Marion paused mid-glide, the candlelight flickering curiously through her translucent form as she turned toward Mr. Cadwallader.

Xerxes thought about it for a moment. He couldn’t put his finger on which constellation was the very first one he could remember. But then it came to him, duh.

Xerxes politely raised his hand and said, “The first constellation I remember hearing about has got to be: Sagittarius. And that’s because it’s my birth sign, like in Astrology. My parents aren’t big on Astrological signs, but my one cousin, Apollo, definitely is. And he would go on and on about why being a Sagittarius was the cause of all my problems.

Xerxes put his hand down afterward and looked around the classroom as the other students gave their answers. Most people, just like himself, could easily remember their zodiac signs. But still others told fascinating stories about other constellations in the night sky. Xerxes found this to be quite fascinating. He beamed as he listened intently to his classmates reminiscences.

Professor Burbage sure knew how to make her students feel special! Kritti’s smile simply grew even as she ignored thoughts of how much she would miss these lesson’s, and the ghost’s wonderful spirit {no pun intended}. “I sure did! Good thing too because I do love a good concert.” Giggling, she nodded at Burbage. “I can promise there will be no sleeping, professor.” Plus there was no way she was letting Hermy fall asleep either!

Kritti was already seated by the time other students started to arrive. She merely observed their interactions with the professor while alternating with admiring the various forms of light. She did not miss Vesper’s wave and sent a cheery one right back; Zephyr received one as well.

At the first question asked to kick off the lesson, the Ravenclaw glanced at Hermy and was not at all surprised to see her smiling so fondly. She knew instantly her friend had taken a trip down Nostalgia Lane. She also knew whatever Hermy was thinking, it involved the other Laramores’.

Up went her hand after a moment. “Taurus, professor. In my culture, the Pleiades star cluster is referred to as ‘Krittika’, which I’m named after. That particular cluster is found within Taurus.” The young woman absolutely loved that her parents had chosen such a wonderful name for her, keeping the original spelling and all.

Zephyr was indeed more than eager to put his curiosity to use, and fortunately it wasn't long before the lesson began.

Not with an immediate explanation for the instruments, but he guessed that maybe that would be too easy. It was probably important to build the anticipation, right? Plus, now he was trying to figure out how constellations connected to them too. Oh, and what one of the first constellations he'd learned about was.

Hmmm... Well, recalling the first one was difficult, but he could go with the first one that stuck out to him.

"The first one I can think of is Leo," Zephyr said, hand raised. "I think because it's a short name, only three letters, so it's easy to remember and pronounce. And because it's represented by a lion from Greek mythology, and lions are cool animals."

Professor Burbage was so friendly and welcoming!

Rory knew that she liked this teacher a lot already. ”Oh, yes! It’s going nicely so far. I have a couple of friends I already knew, and I’m looking forward to meeting new people. Haven’t ran into Peeves yet.” Hopefully she didn’t just jinx herself. Because as much as Rory liked to have fun, it seemed that his idea of fun was greatly different than hers. She didn’t want any pranks played on her.

Looking up at the sky, Rory nodded. Space was indeed pretty and also fascinating. Maybe she’d get into Astronomy professionally. She really wasn’t sure yet. Potions was something she was also interested in. But her mom was a potioneer, so she had a lot of practice over the years.

She was brought out of her thoughts by what the Professor said next. Rory smiled. ”I’ll definitely do that! Thanks, Professor.” It was greatly appreciated.

The lesson began, and Rory raised her hand after the first question was asked. ”Aries, because that’s my birth sign. My family doesn’t really put much of anything on Astrology, but I was curious and asked my parents about it.”

Her expression softened with visible fondness as Hermione finished her thought. A faint arch of her translucent brows followed as if a clarification hovered gently at the edge of her tongue, waiting its turn with grace.

How aaaaaaaaaaabsolutely lovely, Miss Laramore,” she began, her tone gentle, measured, touched with genuine appreciation. “Though I must note, ever so softly mind you, that Hermes himself isn’t one of the 88 officially recognized constellations.” Her eyes crinkled at the corners in a way that conjured the patient affection of a grandmother correcting a beloved child mid-reverie. “But it’s an easy mistake to make, eeeeeeeeeeeeespecially when myth and starlight have been tangled together for thousands upon thousands of years.

She glided forward, her ghostly feet not quite touching the floor, hands folded neatly behind her back as she continued. “Hermes, the fleet-footed herald of the gods, is traditionally linked with several constellations, however. Pleiades, for example, where his mother Maia resides. Some even connect him to Lyra, for the lyre he crafted and traded to Apollo…” She paused to give the instruments a very pointed look accompanied by a coy ‘hmmmmmmmmm’.

She paused just beside Hermione’s desk now, her voice softening further. “But how positively divine, my dear, knowing your name is etched in the sky like that… that’s more than memorable. That’s legacy.

Marion drifted ever so slightly nearer, her silvery form catching the faintest glimmer from the overhead starlight. At the Gryffindor’s half-yawned answer, she inclined her head with a grace that was somehow both amused and approving.

Libra,” she said gently. “One of the few constellations to represent an object rather than a being and often tied to balance, justice, and yes of course, the zodiac.” A faint smile flickered. “Whether one believes in such things or not, the symbols tend to stay with us. That alone gives them power of a sort. I find reaching my horoscope to be a fanciful delight at times. I’ll admit there’s something delightfully indulgent about reading a forecast and pretending the cosmos cares whether I have a lucky color. Last one I read advised me to stop collecting antique spoons and start preparing for an unexpected lightning. Oh yes, and I am meant to avoid snacking on pickled dandelions.” It had all provided her a proper chuckle―not a single antique spoon in any of her remaining personal belongings and lightning could do her no harm.

Or had it read lightEning? Well, one couldn’t get much lighter than a ghost now, could they!

She hovered for a moment longer, translucent hands clasped at her waist as her gaze flicked over the young lioness’ barely-contained restlessness. It wasn’t the first time a student had looked more ready for bed than for a lesson. Nor would it be the last. And oh, if only they said what they were wondering they may actually receive the answers they sought.

Hmmmm…no response to her playful query? No matter. Marion would not press the boy on his sleeping habits for the time being.

She gave a theatrical shiver of amusement, though no sound accompanied it. “Sagittarius, the archer—one of the more easily spotted zodiac constellations, especially on clear winter nights, some might say. And yes, while astrology might not be an exact science,” her tone dipped into playful irony, “as I told Miss Calrissian-Carter, I dooooo admit that reading my horoscope has become one of my guilty posthumous pleasures.” Her gaze drifted upward toward the dome, a giggle escaping her lips—light and staccato, not unlike the cluck of a particularly amused hen. “A particularly sacred and important constellation to our Forbidden Forest dwelling centaur colony as well.

Oh, how absolutely splendid, Miss Joshi!” she exclaimed, her voice rich with admiration and a whisper of awe. “Another with their name directly woven directly into the sky.” Marion had not done so with her own children, but she knew many the stargazing soul who had done just that―one of them being a former professor of Astronomy as well. Though goodness gracious HEAVENS above had it be surprising to hear that man had managed offspring. Not that Marion judged, CERTAINLY not.

She floated a few thoughtful paces, the dome above casting soft starlight across her translucent features. “You are quite right—the Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters, are nestled within the constellation Taurus. And in many cultures, including your own, they hold stories far older than our textbooks can contain.” She paused and wiggled mid-air eagerly. “Another example, shall we? Although Taurus is not explicitly named in Lakota tradition, the overlap between the Pleiades and the bull symbol, specifically a bison in this case, strongly echoes what Western astronomers later defined as the Taurus constellation.

She tilted her head with a soft smile as the young Ravenclaw spoke, finding the simplicity and sincerity of his response to be terribly endearing. “Leo,” she echoed warmly. “Three letters. Bold creature. Memorable indeed. Sometimes it really is that simple. And while ‘because lions are cool’ may not be the most perfectly sound astronomical reasoning, it is nonetheless valid in this context, Mr. Amstern.

She drifted slightly across the classroom floor, the hem of her spectral robes trailing like mist behind her. “The lion is, after all, a symbol of strength, courage, and pride…attributes civilizations have revered for centuries as well as one of Hogwarts very own Founders as I am suuuuuuure you are all very well aware of. The Greeks gave us the story of the Nemean lion, whose hide was impervious to weapons and was ultimately bested by Heracles in one of his labors. In some Mesopotamian star charts, the lion constellation is tied to the goddess Ishtar, whoooooooooo is primarily known for her roles as the goddess of love, war, and fertility. Well spotted, dearie. A solid reminder that even the shooooooooortest names can carry the loooooooongest shadows of meaning.

Aries,” she said fondly, as though the name of the constellation were an old acquaintance. Which was partially true, though an old acquaintance for someone signiiiiiificantly younger than herself felt a bit silly to coin. “A fitting start for someone with your sense of curiosity, Miss Bay.
She drifted a step closer, her voice laced with a mild, scholarly amusement, and her words directed to the entirety of the class and not simply at the young Hufflepuff transfer. “Now, I’ve heard quite a few students today mention their zodiac signs—and it always delights me. Not because I put stock in Astrology myself,” she added as a reminder, “but because it means you’re asking questions. Seeking stories. And that, my dear, is the very first step in becoming an astronomer.

She glided slowly through starlight cast by the enchanted dome, flapping her arms a bit as though she were conducting an orchestra. “Aries, as a constellation, is often linked to the golden ram of Greek myth. A creature of salvation and sacrifice, its fleece later became the prize of the Argonauts. But beyond the myth, Aries has guided agricultural calendars, shaped navigation routes, and even marked the beginning of the zodiac year for many ancient cultures such as the Babylonians whooooooooooooo are ALSO often credited with formalizing the zodiac as we know it today.

Thank you all for sharing your stories. It was absolutely splendid to hear how astronomy has already touched each of you in a personal manner. Now, I was going to open up to a bit of discussion as to whether you all felt that astronomy is more science, more art, or more magic … buuuuuuuuuuut let us save that discussion for homework, shall we?” At least five inches ought to suffice on the topic, she thought, but all those details for another time.

Now, earlier Miss Calrissian-Carter mentioned Libra, the scales, and one of he 29 constellations of the official 88 constellations that represent inanimate objects. Miss Laramore mentioned Hermes which then prompted myself to mention the constellation Lyra. The Lyra constellation, for those of you who are unfamiliar, represents the lyreーin some cases a harpーin Greek mythology. This lyre was famously invented by the god Hermes, who crafted it from a tortoise shell and cow-gut strings. Hermes gifted the lyre to his brother Apollo, who then gave it to the musician Orpheus. I trust you have all taken note of the string instruments in the classroom today, hmm? Now, eyes to the ceiling—yes, yes, the one with the stars, not the one with the cobwebs—and let us speak of heartbreak, heroism, and harps! There once was a man named Orpheus, who was a bit dramatic in the same way a kneazle is when being given a bath, but oh, how he could play the lyre! Legend tells of Orpheus' music taming not only ever manner of wild beast, but supposedly even the stones themselves. His music was so beautiful, even the trees wept, and rivers paused mid-flow to listen. When his beloved Eurydice tragically died—snake bite, very unfortunate but at least it wasn't a possessed Umbrella Vinora—he did what any reasonable grieving artist would do: he marched down into the Underworld and demanded her back."

She placed the back of her hand against her forehead and mimicked a swoon. "Because naturally, music conquers death… or so he hoped. And goodness gracious HEAVENS ABOVE, his music worked! Hades and Persephone, famously NOT known for their leniency, were moved to pity. They agreed to let Eurydice return to the land of the living... on ONE condition: Orpheus must lead her out without looking back. Not a peek! Not a glance! Not even a cheeky over-the-shoulder moment. And what did he do, class?" She paused dramatically, leaning forward with wide expectant eyes. "He LOOKED. BACK." Marion let the words echo through the classroom, punctuated by a thunderous clap from her ghostly palms. "Poof. Gone. Just like that. Tragedy. Lesson learned: trust the process and keep your eyes forward AND always follow the instructions! So, Eurydice vanished, and Orpheus wandered the earth heartbroken and composed mournful songs until the heavens, in their mercy, placed his beloved lyre in the stars."

She lifted her hands and with a shimmer, the shape of the constellation Lyra sparkled above them through the domed window of the astronomy classroom. "Lyra, DARLINGS, is a tribute. Not just to the music, but to love’s hope… and its folly." She leaned in as if sharing a secret with the stars. "Now, some say Orpheus was the first recorded wizard bard. A Wandless Magus, if you will, whose music shaped the flow of rivers and the moods of the moon. Others say he was simply a Muggle with an extraordinary soul." She gave a wink and little wiggle. “Frankly, the stars care, but they still hum his memory through the constellation Lyra and a little something called magical resonance." She paused in the middle of the circular tables, features positively BEAMING. “Yes, YEEEEEES my dears! We are going to attempt perform a bit of what I sometimes like to call astromancy or celestialogy today by tapping into this magical resonance with the constellation Lyra.” Hence the amplified starlight this evening, you see.

Now, pick your companion for the evening and return to your seats. Please no tuning of the instruments just yet, if you mind. Whichever instrument calls to your soul. No, not literally—if it starts singing, tell me and I’ll scold it.

Hermione's face warmed a little at the mistake. Perhaps she had a mix-up with the memories, but the thought of her being wrong about her entire destiny... well, that was a little melodramatic. It flashed her mind briefly but went instantly, and Professor Burbage, being so warm with the correction and unintentionally leading into the next part of the lesson, had her unaffected, with her smile remaining. Hermes and Lyra, that must be what her Apapa had been telling her.

Hermy liked hearing other's responses. Astrology tied well with the naming of constellations and the stars, while she didn't commit to astrology, she found the reading fascinating and more of a little brand with her being a Capricorn. Her little sister's middle name being Capricornus provided an even special bond between them. But alas, it was time for the next part of the lesson.

Hermione quickly scribbled into her notes the corrections and the information Professor Burbage provided. It was all so enchanting for her to later discuss with Kritti, Thena, and her Apapa later. Now which musical instrument she would pick? Perhaps the flute? It was a delicate looking instrument and served the infamous trio well from her light reading of Hogwarts, A History. But it wasn't present, since there were only string instruments available. So she picked up the violin and bow, half-expecting it to sing, but thankful it didn't, before glancing at Kritti. Companions? Naturally, but not opposed to change. She then took her seat and awaited further instructions.

The smile that was already in place on her lips grow evermore at Burbage's reply. "Not even in the slightest, Professor." The only thing better than sweets and looking at the stars was laying beneath the sky to star gaze while enjoying sweets. Now that was a lovely time.

Vesper slowly let her gaze take in the different string instruments once more. Their presence didn't make sense to her until the first question was asked. The first constellation she could recall seeing was Corvus. Obviously it had been her papa that had showed it to her and her siblings. The fact that it had to do with a 'crow' had always made her laugh.

Some detailed notes were taken as Burbage explained all about Lyra 'Lyre'. The story was quite interesting and definitely showed the importance of simply following what you're told. Surely though, in that moment it must have been incredibly difficult not to look back and ensure that his loved one was still right there behind him. Anyhow... Now wasn't the time to sit here and consider all that.

It was time to choose an instrument. Ummm... Honestly this may not turn out well if they weren't using magic. Vesper wasn't very musically inclined! Rising to her feet, she moved to have a look at each delicate instrument before her.
The one standing out the most was the ukulele. Why, she had no idea but this was the one that she carefully picked up and carried back to her seat.

Xerxes walked up to the front of the class and looked around at the assembled string instruments. He gave each instrument an appraising look in turn. He then decided on the banjo. He picked it up, it was much heavier than he had initially imagined.

Xerxes then walked over to Professor Burbage. “I apologize for my improper greeting earlier in the class Professor. I’m just so nervous. It’s my first year here at Hogwarts and I really want to make a good impression. I guess I’m just used to starting class with a respectful ‘Good Morning’. However, I should have remembered that we always study Astronomy at night, so that we can see the stars. I’ll be more precise in the future. Anyhow, it’s a pleasure to be in ur class. ”.

He held up the banjo to show her. “I chose the banjo. It spoke to me, not literally of course. But you can still tell it off if you wish.” Xerxes laughed at his own joke.

Krittika discreetly reached over to give Hermy’s hand a reassuring squeeze. There was never anything wrong with one’s answer being off. Then she was positively beaming at Professor Burbage. It was kind of weird that her parents had settled with such a name when neither were into Astronomy. They probably just liked the name, which was okay with her because she liked her name too. A lot.

Anyway, she hung onto every word of Burbage’s, stifling a giggle when the ghost wiggled. Honestly, Ms. Marion was so endearing! As for that information on Lakota culture, Kritti made some notes and added a little comment to do some reading on the topic. It was underlined in bright pink ink for emphasis. “I had not known that, Professor. I’ll do a bit of reading on it later.”

As the lesson progressed, she continued to diligently make notes, pausing at times to marvel about the story being told to them. She found it spectacularly romantic that Orpheus went all the way back to the Underworld to get his Eurydice back. Though, he was incredibly foolish to not be able to follow clear instructions. Krittika’s gaze flicked towards Lyra sparkling through the window but soon after followed Hermy to collect an instrument. She thought the violin was an excellent choice, she herself choosing one of the handheld harps. Thankfully, it did not sing though Kritti was sure she would have joined in if she knew the lyrics.

Lyrics.

“The word ‘lyric’ has its origin in Greek mythology, professor?” the seventh year asked after reseating herself next to Hermy, he hand raised. The word sounded a lot like Lyra but maybe that could have been coincidental?

Rory definitely thought she seemed to fit Aries, and it seemed that the Professor agreed. Even though neither of them put stock in Astrology, it was still interesting. Being an Aries was cool, and she nodded along to everything the professor said about it.

The lesson started, and Rory started taking notes. Mythology was rather interesting. As were musical instruments.

Rory walked over to them and decided to grab a violin. That was what spoke to her. Taking her seat again, she waited for the lesson to continue.

Marion’s wispy silvery gaze lingered on Hermione with a soft, approving gleam as the girl settled back into her seat, violin in hand.

A fine choice, Miss Laramore,” she said, voice light and laced with something almost secretive. “The violin is a complex and breathtaking companion—elegant, precise, and capable of surprising resonance. Much like the stars, I’d say… or perhaps like those who study them with such earnest care. Quite reflective, wouldn't you say?

She didn’t elaborate further, only gave the faintest amused nod, as though she knew something about both violin and student that she wasn’t quite ready to share.

She observed Miss Thanatos-Misra’s selection with clear delight, a curl of misty fondness shaping her features.

Ah yes, the ukulele,” she hummed with a voice light as moonlight on water. “A curious little marvel…easy to carry, bright of tone, and often underestimated. Much like the smaller constellations in the sky, wouldn’t you say? Constellations small in shape, but quite bold in stories.” Her eyes twinkled with that signature Burbage way.

Precision is admirable, yes, but a kind heart and a genuine spirit make the finest impression of all. Though I MUST confess, for a moment I feared you’d been asleep all day. It is certainly a relief to know it was simply a matter of a slip of the tongue!” Her tone was light, teasing, with a wink to soften the jest. “Though truthfully, at Hogwarts, you’ll find lessons can happen at nearly any hour. The stars, after all, keep their own schedule.

Her eyes twinkled as he lifted the banjo. “[b]And what a bold choice,” she added, voice lilting with delight. “The banjo’s not shy, nor is it subtle. It rings out, joyfully and unmistakably. A rather charming mirror of your presence, wouldn’t you say? No telling off necessary. I dooooooo hope to not put it in such a sour mood it refuses to perform for you.

Professor Burbage looked up just as Miss Joshi’s hand lifted, her eyes already crinkling in a pleased smile. “Ah, an excellent question indeed,” she chirped. “And yes, it does.” She floated slowly in a figure eight as she spoke. “Now, there are far more linguistically included members to the Burbage family than myself, but I can say that the word lyric traces its etymology back to the Greek word ‘lyrikos’. A word which quite literally means 'of the lyre.’ In ancient times, as you may recall, poetry was often sung and when it was it was almost always accompanied by a lyre rather than simply read aloud.

Her gaze swept fondly over the harp in the young lady’s hands. “And what a fitting instrument you’ve chosen. The harp’s gentle resonance echoes that same intimacy, if I doooooo say so myself. And I do,” she chortled. “Delicate, thoughtful, and deeply expressive. Much like yourself.

The lesson started, and Rory started taking notes. Mythology was rather interesting. As were musical instruments.

Rory walked over to them and decided to grab a violin. That was what spoke to her. Taking her seat again, she waited for the lesson to continue.
Marion offered Rory a small smile as she settled back into her seat with the violin. “Lovely choice, Miss Bay. The violin is one of the most versatile instruments in the world—capable of carrying both melody and harmony, and used in everything from classical symphonies to traditional folk music,” she noted appreciatively. “It takes both curiosity and confidence to pick it up without hesitation. Well done.

Professor Burbage floated backward and gestured grandly toward the slitted dome overhead. "Now then, my DAH-lings, I do hope you took your tuning seriously just now, because the starlight tonight isn’t just pretty—it's potent. You see, the light amplified in our classroom this evening is woven together with the light from Vega, the brightest star in Lyra. Not all stars but there are special ones that are said to carry magical frequency, especially those bound to myth and memory. When your instruments are tuned beneath Vega’s light, they don’t just find their pitch—they resonate. With you. With the sky. With them.” She motioned upward toward the constellation Lyra above them as seen through the window. "So when you pluck those strings now, you're not just making music—you’re aligning with the rhythm of something ancient. Cosmic. Personal. Some would argue you are even doing so with Orpheus himself."

It was a charming thought, she must admit.

"Tonight, we are not merely stargazing—we are starlisteningーso to speak. Magical resonance," she began, drawing the word out as though singing it, "is the principle that certain magical elements—especially wand cores, incantations, even intent—hum in harmony with cosmic patterns. And few patterns are as melodically aligned as Lyra’s. Especially when our dear Vega is high in the sky as it happens to be this very evening." She pivoted mid-air, translucent robes swirling. "Wands with musical core ingredients such as Veela hair, phoenix feather, even the rarer kelpie-hair—are thought to vibrate more powerfully under Lyra’s influence. The wand, you see, isn’t just a conduit for spellwork but also a tuning fork for the soul." She pointed a translucent finger at one particularly sleepy student. "And yours, darling, is horrifically out of tune. I suggest you try journaling."

Another whirl and then Marion was floating through the middle of the curved desks as she spoke. "Now. Charmwork, especially that involving emotion, communication, or bardic magic—the sort of magic that uses music to pacify a creature or even Mermish hymns—is theorized flare brighter when cast beneath Vega’s light. If you’re writing a love letter that needs a bit of extra oomph, or performing an enchantment meant to soothe a creature’s heart? Aim for Lyra’s rise. It’s also why, historically, the Wizengamot and particularly back to the days of the medieval Wizards' Council held major proposals and declarations of fealty during September and October." She paused dramatically, lowering her voice just enough to draw the class closer. "And then there are the Seers… Lyra is a favored constellation for Diviners and Dreamwalkers as it is thought to help clarify emotional visions, strengthen symbolic interpretation, and pierce the haze of internal noise."

Marion hovered near the blackboard now, script curling into being behind her in moon-silver chalk. "Memorae Lucentia," she spoke with a kind of reverence, "comes from the Latin—memorae, meaning memories, and lucentia, from lucens, meaning shining or light-bearing. So together, we might translate it as ‘memories that shine’ or ‘light of memory.’ Poetic, no?"

This is conceptually similar to how one would cast the Patronus Charm, but this particular bit of magic is NOT limited to only happy memories to be potent. The incantation should be spoken softly, like a whispered secret or quiet confession. Memorae Lucentia that's MEH-mor-eye loo-SEN-tee-ah. The instrument, plucked under Vega’s light, will respond—casting not an image, but a kind of harmonic echo of the memory’s emotional imprint. It is not exact, nor always gentle. But it is honest. So choose wisely."
OOC Instructions:
Time for your characters to try casting the spell on their chosen instrument! No musical talent is needed—a simple pluck or strum is enough to activate the magic.

The Narrator account will follow up to reveal the outcome of your character's casting attempt—success, failure, unexpected results—and may include guidance help your character improve.

Have fun exploring how your character channels magic through sound!

Xerxes took a deep breath to steady himself. He needed his full attention in order to successfully cast the charm. He took out his wand and switched hands, having instinctually grabbed the wand with his dominant hand. Once his wand was in his non-dominant hand, he focused his mind on an emotionally stirring memory. He chose the day he came out of the closet to his parents. He was soooo nervous about their reaction, but it turned out he had nothing to worry about. They were totally accepting and have been nothing but loving ever since. His great fear and anxiety turned into overwhelming joy.

Xerxes held this memory firmly in his mind and concentrated with all his might. He cleared his head of all other distractions and let the emotion of his memory wash over him until it consumed him completely.

Xerxes then took his dominant hand and plucked the string on his perfectly tuned banjo one time; one clear, resounding note. He then whispered “ Memorae Lucentia

Xerxes then waited to see how his instrument would respond, once under the influence of the magical incantation.

It was quite encouraging when one’s question was greeted with such a response such as Burbage’s smile. Krittika’s eyes followed the ghost in her figure-eight adventure though she was listening closely to the response. So, the word was indeed derived from ancient Greek. How simply wonderful! “I do recall that about poetry, Professor, even though I was not around at that time.” She gave Burbage a warm dimpled smile because, yes. In a way, she was teasing her lovely professor. Perhaps the ghost’s husband had serenaded her with poetry in the form of songs. How very romantic that would have been!

Krittika grinned, pleased with the approval of her instrument choice. Did those words mean that Burbage had ventured into playing the harp herself when she was alive and well? “Thank you. I haven’t any experience with it, however…”

Not that it would matter much, based on what was being explained to them. The Ravenclaw was quite in awe of what could be done using magic while existing beneath Vega’s light. Notes were made, very diligently so before practice commenced. Since she was ambidextrous, Kritti figured that it didn’t matter which hand she used to hold her wand; she tended to use both hands equally.

“MEH-mor-eye loo-SEN-tee-ah! MEH-mor-eye loo-SEN-tee-ah. Memorae Lucentia.’’ Satisfied that with the pronunciation of the incantation, the seventh year pointed her wand at the harp; the wand was held in her right hand. With her left, plucked at a few strings. The chosen memory? The one from last year in the Forbidden Forest where she encountered a couple of acromantulas with that ex of hers. Yes, there were other memories - far better memories - that could have been used for the activity but she doubted it would be soon that she forget that terror she had felt at the time.

Ah, young Xerxes. So eager, so earnest, so very first year.

The banjo's single note rang out—a rich, warm sound that seemed to shimmer faintly in the air. For a fleeting moment, the temperature dipped around him—not cold, no, but crisp, like the hush before a snowfall or the breathless stillness of twilight. Above the strings, a barely-there shimmer danced, like the tail-end of an aurora glimpsed through half-closed eyes. It was there……………swirling turquoise and yellow……………and then it wasn’t.

The spell had stirred. Almost. But not quite.

Not because the memory lacked power. Oh no, the memory was radiant, heartfelt, and brimming with the kind of joy that makes stardust sigh. But magic is a language, and you are only just learning its alphabet. The incantation, though whispered earnestly, had frayed at the edges, softened by hesitation and the unfamiliar weight of wand in an unfamiliar hand.

Still, the response was promising. The spell had listened, even if it hadn’t quite obeyed. Even the most harmonious constellation starts with a shaky note. Try again, young one. Allow your banjo to bathe in starlight a bit longer and yourself in the moment at which your memory hinges.

The harp beneath your fingers responds with a tremble of sound—soft and cold, like a silver blade drawn across glass.

Then it began.

Blinding red translucent aurora wisps burst to life, vivid and electric, casting sharp-edged shadows that flickered across your face and table before you with a wild pulse that knocks your textbook clear off the table and on to the floor with a thud. They twisted and spiraled with force, not grace—slivers of motion within them resembling legs, glints of fangs, and the suggestion of something more human. The air tensed…not chilled, but charged—as if the air around you was holding its breath.

This was no gentle recollection.

The spell had worked, more or less. But it had not settled. It flared—a burst of brilliance, not a sustained glow. The harp quivered under the strain, as though the memory had lashed through it, rather than flowed. If you wish the memory to illuminate rather than burn, perhaps you ought to let more of your heart enter it. Not just the fear. Not just the fury. Look deeper. There is always more to the story than what stalks you in the dark.

Hermione smiled, "Thank you, Professor. I think so too." She couldn't agree more. While she still had much to learn, she truly considered herself a student and child of the stars. She took down the notes, and began mouthing Memorae Lucentia, noting the pronunciation as MEH-mor-eye loo-SEN-tee-ah. It was very lucrative information and instructions worth memorizing, and not just for the O.W.Ls she was doomed expected to take.

Hermione looked at Kritti, thinking that her memory would probably involve her brother in some fashion, but she would ask later. So from the instructions, Hermione won't be using the bow just yet. So she set it down, before she could tuck the violin under her chin, she held the wand in her non-dominant left hand. Aiming the wand at the Violin, she whispered, "Memorae Lucentia..." Like a secret. Before swiftly holding the Violin in the proper position, chin on the bottom black portion, left arm slightly bent at the elbow.

Hermione thought about the summer while plucking the stings. Her special friend had gone away to India for a trip with their family. Before he left, she gave him a pleasant goodbye on the lips before running off, leaving him with that gift of hers. She had a mix of desperation, relief, and anxiety in the moment but in hindsight, warmth at the end result when he returned from the month-long trip. That was when she tilted the bow and ran it along the violin to hopefully produce a pleasant sound.
