Default Astronomy II :: A Feeling Within Me, A Skyglow (Light Pollution)

Unlike the last seminar lesson, this was not held shortly before midnight. Similarly, Simran was dressed in her usual saree (a navy blue one made of shimmery gossamer). Everything seemed to be in order, including the fact that your professor is sitting on her table instead of at it. You've known her long enough by now to know that this is perfectly normal behaviour.

There are also trays on the desks, along with a bottle of liquid marked with "DO NOT DRINK". All will be explained in due time.

Have you brought your telescopes?

OOC: The lesson will begin in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post! Get yourselves settled in.

LESSON PROGRESSION:
QUESTION 1: What do astronomers even do?
MINI-ACTIVITY: Calibrate your cameras to measure skyglow!

With his telescope tucked away in his bag and a smile on his face, Lucas made his way to the Astronomy classroom. He was very glad that the lesson wasn't so late but....... well. Would that have changed his feelings towards the class? Probably not.

Heading into the room, he first looked around and, upon noticing nothing odd, looked over at Sandhu, who was sitting where she usually sat. "Hey, Professor Sandhu!" he said, giving her a smile. Was he going to comment on her saree? No. Not at all. But the colours did remind him of a starry night sky which only made him wonder if she'd done that on purpose.

It was only when he'd made his way to a seat, one where he usually sat, that he noticed that there was something odd. Bottles of liquid? Don't drink? Uhhhh?? A confused look crossed his face as he sat down slowly, first glancing around at the other bottles and then over at Sandhu. He trusted her - he did! - but if this was poison..........

No. No no. She wouldn't. This was SANDHU, HELLO?!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

“Hello, Professor,’’ Claudine greeted when she stepped into the room. It seemed she was rather early, being among the first to arrive. This suited her just fine as it meant she would have more choices in terms of seat. For now, her eyes swept over trays on the desk. How interesting. “I like your sari,’’ she added before moving to occupy a desk at the back of the Observatory.

Just what was in the bottle? That was the question on her mind as she carefully rested her telescope on the desk. Claudine was pretty sure it wasn’t something harmful (even though she had no intention of drinking from it) and was also sure that they would soon be enlightened about its contents.

"Evening, Professor S!" she greeted, making her way to her seat. Was it acceptable for them to sit on their desks too?? Except for the fact that their desks were a lot less stable than the professors'. Also, did Professor Sandhu realize that dangling something in front of a bunch of Gryffindors that says NOT to do something was cruel? Okay, so the class wasn't all Gryffindors, but it was 25% as such and Carsyn literally was expecting the same percentage of those clad in red to want to drink it.

Carsyn being no exception, except that she was 15 years old now which meant she was practically a grownup. No, not really, but she wasn't a naive little first year and she had to show some semblance of maturity, which consisted at the moment of just staring at the bottle, wondering WHAT it was that her head of house would have been so bold as to have to write not to drink. OH WAIT. Was it STAR DUST??? She said not drink, but that didn't mean Carsyn couldn't pick up the bottle to feel its weight and determine if it was liquid or gas ....

Valencia smiled as she entered. She was enjoying the weather being more clear. "Hello Professor." she greeted as she passed. She then leaned forward to peer at a bottle on one of the desks. Do not drink? That sounded fun. Her grin widened as she took her seat, setting her bag containing her telescope and abacus off to the side.

Kaiser stepped into the classroom, bag containing what he needed for the lesson slung over his shoulder, and a distracted air about him. Perhaps deceptively so, because he was still aware of his surroundings - of who was doing what and where and when, though maybe not the hows or whys - but looked completely out of it. His thoughts were elsewhere, but his awareness was very much present.

"Evening," Kaiser greeted the professor simply as he took a seat at one of the desks. The tray and bottle in front of him received a cursory glance, but Kaiser was more focused on getting his things out of his bag. He wasn't overly interested in the contents of the bottle, and, even if he had been, it was fairly obvious they'd find out what was inside it soon enough.

Blake made his way to Astronomy. One of his favorite classes. Smiling at the Professor and giving a head nod. He took a look around and noticing Claudine in the back he decided to take a seat next to her. it seems like it had been a while since they tortured each other. Then again, he had retreated himself to his dormitory for while not wanting to be around people.

Smiling as he took a seat. "Claudine" He said as he gently placed his telescope on the table in front of him. "What do you think is in that bottle?" He asked as he put the finishing touches on the stand for his telescope.

With telescope in hand Patrick entered the astronomy room glad it wasn't midnight. He hated having to come to astronomy that late even though he knew good and well that it was the best time to see the stars. Taking a look at their Professor he smiled, "Hello Professor" He wasn't taken aback by the sitting upon the desk anymore. By now it was a common occurance that did not stop him in his tracks.

Seeing the tray on the table he sat down and looked at the items, DONT DRINK THIS He chuckled seeing the bottle with that written on it. "Someone channeling their inner Alice in Wonderland?" a quiet whisper of the words escaped his mouth as he wondered which student was going to drink the liquid they weren't supposed to just because it said not to drink it.

Gunnar was usually pleased when he wasn't required to attend late night Astronomy lessons. Not that he didn't like observing the night sky or constellations, it was just that he normally had early mornings and that did not typically go well with late lessons. And so he entered the room with a smile as he greeted the professor.

"Hello, Professor Sandhu." Now, where to sit? He adjusted the strap of his school bag on his shoulder and took the nearest unoccupied seat towards the back. His eyes soon landed on the bottle labeled do not drink and he had to stifle a laugh. Did Sandhu really think he'd just drink some random, unidentified liquid?

Cecelia was here, bright eyed and bushy tailed and with her telescope tucked safely in her bag. She LIKED these lessons a lot, EVEN if they sometimes got a little complicated and made her brain hurt from thinking about the HUGE, WIDE, EXPANSIVE universe. "Hello Professor," She greeted cheerfully, offering the woman a grin before looking around to find herself a seat.

Spotting Lucas, the first year WAVED at her older friend, but she wouldn't be sitting with him today. She HOPED he'd understand. INSTEAD she moved on over to the puppy!boy himself, her GOOD BUDDY, Kaiser. He was a GOOD one and Cecelia liked to think she could bring some sunshine to his day 'cause sometimes he looked REAL tired or serious and BOTH and he deserved some sun. "Hello!" She'd be joining him, did he KNOW?

Simran had a few minutes of checking her watch and idly swinging her legs around before the students began to trickle in, which gave her time to muse about retirement. What a thought. She'd tried it once, but she was far too restless to sit at home and do nothing, and she had no living husband with whom she'd been dying to live out the rest of her days with.

Teaching at Hogwarts had seemed to come at just the right time -- a less rigorous environment, the removal of publishing pressure and the break from highbrow academia? It was the perfect fit. It seemed silly to even consider walking away from it. Wasn't this the dream? To work at a job you loved, not to worry about paying any bills?

Thankfully, she was spared the rest of her internal monologue by the arrival of one of her Gryffindors. Lucas Dakest, who had swung by her office only a few hours ago to ask for her help. "Hello, Master Dakest," she said, turning to pick an envelope off her desk and hold it out for him. "I believe this is for you."

Was it what the boy thought it was? Almost certainly.

Was what was in the bottle toxic? Equally certain. Was she planning to poison them? Well, if she were, she wouldn't have explicitly told them not to drink it, would she have?

"Hello, Miss Blaze," she smiled, and then tugged gently on her pallu as if to remind herself that it was there. "Thank you. It was a gift from my husband." Many, many years ago, when she'd first begun teaching Astronomy.

Strange to think that sarees continued to flatter her as she grew older, unlike the more westernised outfits she had seen over her years. For what was effectively a long piece of cloth and a cropped top, it was timeless. Which was what she liked about it -- simultaneously new and ancient, just like the universe she studied.

"Good evening, Miss Rose," she said, nodding at the girl as she entered. As she saw the Gryffindor pick up the bottle, she watched skeptically, but said nothing further as she didn't seem likely to drink it. And, yes, drinking generally implied that it was a liquid.

Had Simran heard the statement that 15 years of age made someone grown, she would have laughed. Only because she had hindsight, though. When she was 15, she'd found adults who thought she knew nothing entirely irritating. However, she, as an adult, did know exactly the reaction that Gryffindors would have to the labelling of the bottle.

She would probably also admit, if made to do so, that Gryffindors were the only reason she'd labelled it in the first place. Ravenclaws would likely wonder what it was, why they shouldn't drink it, but Gryffindors? Their first thought would tend to be "what happens if I drink it anyway?", and then, hopefully, their self-preservation would kick in before they could find out.

Not a bad system, in her opinion. Besides, she was there to yell STOP if any of them decided to take an experimental swig.

"Hello, Miss Phillips," she returned easily, watching with delight as the girl took in her surroundings. Ah, the excitement of wondering what a lesson was about. She quite missed it -- she really should sit in one of the other professors' lessons one of these days.

Ah, and here entered Kaiser. "Hello, dear," she said, offering him a smile as he entered. He certainly was one of her favourites, among those who had elected not to take her subject once it was no longer compulsory, especially since he chose to come to these seminars all the same. It made her feel rather (dare she say it?) warm and fuzzy.

Not that she had favourite students, of course. Pfft. Nonsense. She loved them all equally. Just... differently.

The silent nod was returned with one of her own. Simran was very fond of the concept of greeting her students the way they greeted her, and this instance was no different.

It wasn't of much use having prolonged discussions now anyway, with so many people entering.

"Hello, Master Dooley," she smiled, and then left him to his devices. See, when you were a Slytherin, and really did not understand how the Gryffindor mind worked. Gryffindors, upon being told not to do something, proceed to question the authority of anything and everything that says they shouldn't do the thing, and if they're lucky, realise that maybe they shouldn't do the thing.

Today was one of those days where they really shouldn't drink the fluid. But the marker was there just in case their parents decided to sue her.

That's not to say that she wasn't enjoying the general reactions to the label, though. So very entertaining. This term had not been short of drama in any sense of the word.

The most difficult part of deciding for an Astronomy NEWT was thinking about whether early mornings would be a part of the routine, and Simran entirely understood that. She also understood that it was part of why she had many people enroll in her NEWT class in sixth year, and then leave because it was too much. She knew. She'd been there. She got it.

But she appreciated it all the same when they did choose to come, and to humour her when she threw these seminar-parties. So he got a bright smile from her. "Hello, Master McCarthy."

And no, he was not on the list of students that she expected to even consider drinking the mystery fluid.

To be fair, the big, wide, expandING universe made her head spin as well. More often than she was likely to admit. But what was important was that they enjoyed the subject and were curious. Science was not about being good at something, it was about persevering until you GOT good at something.

"Hello, Master Spencer," she said, and with a final glance at her watch, made her way to shut the door behind him. Anyone entering now would lose points, but she'd much rather have them late than not there at all.

Resuming her perch on her desk, she clapped her hands together to catch everyone's attention. The chatter should die down any moment now -- perfect. Now she could begin.

Hopping back off the desk, she adjusted her pallu and smiled widely. "Welcome, everyone, to our second and final Astronomy seminar for the year. We've learned a lot in our regular classes over the year, and most of you know what you should expect to learn for the rest of your time here, where this subject is concerned."

"However, the question today is a little different. What do you think I, and other astronomers, actually do for a living?" Aside from teach gremlins such as themselves, of course.

These were answers she'd really like to hear.

OOC: Hello everyone and welcome to our second and final Astronomy lesson of the term! We've begun, so please no longer post arrivals or you'll lose points. Just pretend your character was here all along! You'll have about 24 hours to post before I move us along.

Drewett had been there all along, in one of his usual places on the second row close to the wall. He certainly had not forgotten to bring his telescope and abacus which he, in fact, checked almost five times while he was on his way to the Beauxbatons observatory. What a way to give himself unnecessary anxiety, but he was here and ready to focus on school-related activities considering things.

The bottled liquid with the 'do not drink' label did not go unnoticed either. He'd been curious about it, wondering what its purpose would be for today's lesson. Drewett was certain there would be reckless Gryffindors—not that he was generalizing, but the younger ones had quite a train wreck of a reputation—whose curiosity as a driving force would cause, er, trouble. Probably. He hoped not, though.

His green eyes followed back to Professor Sandhu when she began the seminar...with a question. Drewett had thought about it before. Way before, years ago. The Ravenclaw raised his hand, almost sheepishly, to answer. "Some astronomers work in the academia and do research t-to expand the knowledge about the universe, Professor..." he shared, also ruffling his hair as the words came out of his mouth. Something like that.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine watched wearily as Blake approached her direction and she silently hoped that he wasn’t going to sit next to her. Unfortunately, her hope fell on deaf ears. “Hopefully something that lets you stay away from me,’’ was her remark and not looking at her Housemate. It seemed like she never could shake him and it could be annoying at times. The good thing was that the lesson was getting started and she wouldn’t have to pay him any more attention.

The Snakette raised a hand after some thought. “Consulting,’’ she volunteered when she was called upon. “Surely new and upcoming astronomers would want more information and to hear the opinions of more experienced Astronomers.”

Sandhu was handing him an envelope? Lucas was...... confused. Yeah. Confused. Eyebrows furrowed, he glanced between her and the envelope she was holding out for him, silently wondering what exactly she had for him. Was it some worksheet he'd given back to her? But why would she put it in an en-

..........

And then it clicked.

His eyes widened and he even let out the tiniest of gasps. "You've done it already?!" If he was being completely honest, he didn't think she'd have it done so soon. Teachers had their own things to do, didn't they? And she was even a Head of House - his Head of House - so she probably had double the work.

But regardless, it was done and ready for him to take. Shuffling forwards, he gave Sandhu a wide smile as he took the envelope, still not believing that it was done. "Thank you! And for getting it done so quickly. I-" He awkwardly stood there for a moment, silently wondering if he should give her a hug for her efforts. But it seemed inappropriate - and he didn't really do hugs - so he mumbled a final "Thank you!" before making his way to his seat. The envelope was placed neatly in his bag while a small red tinge crept up on his cheeks.

When Sandhu started the class, Lucas dropped his bag to the floor and turned his attention back to her. What do Astronomers do for a living? He knew this. And he knew that she knew that he knew this, and it was all because of a letter in an envelope that was tucked away in his bag. "Some study the, uh, celestial bodies and track their progress and motion," he said, his hand up in the air, "See if anything is weird or not doing what it should, you know? OR, just to track the progress during an important event like an eclipse."

The moment Professor Sandhu addressed the students as a whole, Carsyn set the bottle back down her desk, still frowning at it as her head of house continued on with the first question. She was also mildly confused at the interaction between the professor and Lucas. What was it that she handed Lucas that he wanted her to do? She was ... somewhat friends with Lucas, but apparently not enough. But also, Lucas seemed to be a private person, judging from his red cheeks.

Also, Lucas totally took her answer, since she was going to mention something on studying the stars, which basically the same thing as study celestial bodies. Carsyn raised her hand at long last, "Maybe invent things? Debate on the celestial bodies and their classifications?" Aka, the Pluto debate.

"Some do, yes," she nodded. She herself was one of those Astronomers who worked in academia. "Though most discoveries of note tend to be results we don't expect, rather than results we were testing for. More "that's funny" than "eureka!", you know?"

She certainly had her fair share of those in her day. These days, her "that's funny"s were more connected to her students making entirely logical arguments, only to entirely lose track and wander far far away with their train of thought.

"Well, yes," she said, even as her eyebrows furrowed. This was not quite an answer she'd been expecting, but it was correct all the same. "Though consulting work is usually done for non-Astronomers. When an Astronomer asks another for their opinion, we call it advising, rather than consulting."

Teeny-tiny technicality.

A fond smile spread across her face as the young Gryffindor came forward to take his envelope, and she had to restrain the urge to laugh. She'd written many letters of this sort in her day, and after over fifty years of it, it really did not take quite as long now as it used to. It was simply a case of using the phrases she'd used before in different permutations.

All the same, writing Lucas Dakest this letter had not been unpleasant, and there was little reason to put it off. "It was a pleasure," she smiled, and then winked. "It's also part of my job description."

"Well, should is a relative term," she began, but nodded. "Yes, we do largely work to measure and record celestial events."

"I'd say that invention is more an engineering thing, and for those in the development side of research and development," she smiled, but nodded all the same. "Debating on classifications is a rare part of the job description, but when something absolutely new is discovered, and there are more than one, it does help to have a few Astronomers help define what it would constitute."

"More often than not, however, definitions are made by the discovering scientists, and as more similar objects are discovered, the similarities are discussed and a category is established."

That being said, the Pluto debate was not a debate. Pluto was not a planet, it was a dwarf planet that had never officially been deemed a planet before the news story had broken in the first place. This had been a fact long before she had been born, she really didn't understand the fuss. If Pluto were to reclassified a planet, there were a couple celestial bodies in the asteroid belt that would also need that reclassification.

"Now, as we've seen, there are many things that Astronomers across the world do as part of their jobs. Some work at discovering new systems and finding things beyond our imaginations, some teach these discoveries to the next generation of astronomers," she chuckling. Yes, and it was difficult enough without people trying to spread misinformation.

"However, what is generally consistent is measurement and recording -- the cornerstone of the scientific method." Did any of them remember their reintroduction to it, last term? "While ancient astronomers used their eyeballs, modern astronomers use charged couple devices, which are more accurate (which sadly do not work around large quantities of magic) to measure things in the night sky. Today, we will be measuring the brightness of the sky itself, also known as skyglow. We're lucky here in the French countryside not to have disgusting amounts of light pollution, which means we should be able to do this experiment without too much difficulty!"

How, you ask? Magic! Well, science, but that was often indistinguishable from magic in the first place. "Now, we all know that telescopes were meant to enhance what the eye can see, and that cameras were made to capture what the eye sees."

Were they still following? Had they gathered what would be happening today and drawn their own conclusions? She gave them a pause for the news to sink in, before she resumed. "Now, if you would come over to the front and collect a camera each from my desk, we're going to calibrate them together, so that we can measure skyglow."

Meanwhile, she used the time to spellotape a sheet of white paper to the blackboard, as the enchanted piece of chalk wrote the procedure on the right hand side of the board. Once the chalk was done and the paper taped evenly, she heaved a sigh and rolled the board slightly left so that the face of the paper was evenly lit, without any shadows. Did everyone have their cameras? Yes? Good. Moving on.

"Follow the instructions on the board to calibrate your devices, and I'll be around to help with settings if you're having trouble." They shouldn't differ from camera to camera, considering that they were all just duplicates of the same. In Simran's defense, it had been difficult enough getting her hands on an analogue camera in the first place. These things were relics!

OOC: We won't actually be calculating anything with the tables, but your charries will be recording averages, medians and standard deviations according to the histograms on their cameras. That's too much work for us, though! So just have them enjoy fiddling with these antiques and we'll move along in about 48ish hours to the main activity!

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Why had Trinetta been so quiet in classes lately? Well, talking only distracted her from taking in as much information in to her brain as she possibly could - she'd been told by multiple people that she talked too much, to be honest. So she had remained relatively quiet, scribbling her notes as Sandhu talked.

She had no idea muggle cameras were so...complex. This was all very complicated stuff - so that meant muggle photographers didn't just point and shoot photos of stuff? There were settings and adjustments that needed to be fiddled with? Interesting.

Once they had to go ahead to get started with the activity, Nettie gathered her camera and materials and started to set up. She placed the paper relatively close to the lens, making sure it took up the entire frame just as instructed. It ended up being about two feet away. She placed it on the desk and then knelt down, leaning in and putting her eye to the viewfinder. She slowly started to adjust the focus, tongue between her teeth in concentration as she focused the lens on the paper. There. Perfect!

Ok, now sensitivity to...ISO 200? What did that even mean? She paused for a moment to consult her notes, because THIS was the confusing part that she needed to take her time on.

Dalia was rather off her game today, so she stayed quiet during the first question. As class moved on though, she did retrieve a camera from Professor Sandhu's desk as asked. Man, these things were old! And rather complicated. And she didn't quite understand how these were supposed to help measure the skyglow. Basically, she was totally confused. Not enough to need help or anything, but confused all the same.

She carefully turned the camera around until the part she was supposed to look through was facing her, then held it up and aimed it at the white paper. Of course, she had to move the camera a bit, but the paper finally filled the view. That changed when she had to go looking for the focus dial. She had to start all over when she put the camera back to her eye. But she did eventually get it positioned back to where she'd had it.

Adjusting the focus dial until the view wasn't all fuzzy and was focused on the paper, she pulled her face away from the camera (instead of the other way around) and read the next instruction. Wait, what was an ISO? And was its switch marked as such? Ah, there it was. She adjusted this one to 200 then moved on to the...what? Aperture?

Why were these things so complicated?

While Dalia didn't find anything labeled aperture, she did find one labeled with an f and figured that must be it. Turning it to the 2.8, she followed the next instruction. After setting the image resolution to low, she set the camera down and drew a table on her parchment and labeled it appropriately. Once that was done, she picked the camera back up and got it positioned correctly, then started taking the first set of pictures followed by the second.

Now what?

Default Austin needs help plz.
Stay Free

Austin glanced at the others. At least he wasn't the only one confused. He may have had one muggle parent but had never been introduced to a camera before. He looked perplexed at the thing. He blinked and looked at the black board instructions....okay....he looked down at the camera and looked for the on switch. After he found it, he looked for a button to push to take a picture. He took a test photo hearing the click camera noise. Okay..that's how that works. He messed with the buttons a bit and frowned. He raised his hand. He needed help.

Should is a relative term? Uh?? His eyebrows furrowed slightly as he looked off into the distance. What did she mean by that? Could she go into more detail? Explain why it was relative and not a must? Because he couldn't imagine a situation where they didn't track these events. Weren't they huge in the Astronomy world?

But Sandhu was moving on so he tried to focus on her, instead. And she was talking about measuring and recording? And skyglow, which was talking about the brightness of the sky. At this, he glanced up at the sky itself and...... yeah, he had questions. Questions that came from his brain wandering and overthinking but they were questions he was sure Sandhu would be used to by now.

When it was time to start moving, Lucas got up and moved to the front of the room to collect a camera. Any camera, since they all looked the same. The next step was finding the right place to shoot the picture so that the white paper filled up the field of view, which was a lot harder than he thought it would be. How did photographers do this? Was this why he always saw some of them bending down or even laying down to get the perfect shot?

Eventually, he did find the perfect distance. How long did it take? That..... didn't matter because it happened. Even if he had to lean across the desk to get the paper in the frame, which he was still doing as he tried to get it into focus. If it was alive, he would’ve thought that the camera had a mind of its own because it didn’t want to do what he wanted it to do. Or he was bad at photography.

.......... Yeah. That sounded about right.

Next came a bunch of numbers, which he wasn’t confused by but was also not comfortable with, either. The ISO has to be set to 200? Uh, okay. He didn’t know why or what the number meant or if there was any significance but the number was being set to 200. It seemed pretty low given the options that were there so he had even more questions but he was moving on.

The aperture has to be set to f/2.8? Was he reading that correctly? Lucas glanced between the camera he was working with and the board and back again. Okay? It seemed like this lesson was going to be full of questions because he had even more that he wanted to ask and know about. Or maybe it was because this was more about photography than Astronomy and he wasn’t sure how he felt about that.

With the aperture set and the resolution set to low - his brain was bursting with questions and question marks - he set to work on something he did understand. Thank Merlin! Pulling his notebook closer, he started drawing up two tables to track the pixel value information that Sandhu was talking about. THIS was more like it! This was more........ science and maybe if he thought about it like that, this would make more sense.

Maybe.

Default hello, Austin!
Kimothée Chalamet • The UWU Agenda • Once Baby, Now Trouble • All Growed Up

More "that's funny" than "eureka!" Drewett would have to admit that he wouldn't have explained it that way if he had to, but the point went through and he understood it. Besides, it was kind of funny how Professor Sandhu explained it. He allowed himself a little smile in response to that. These kinds of sciences were all about objectivity, but there were always variables that were hard to control. Adds a pinch of fun to learning new things, if he'd say so himself.

No telescopes yet, hm? He didn't mind. While he didn't actually own a personal camera, Drewett knew enough about it to know how to operate one. He even got to charm one for Evan as a Valentine's Day present almost two months ago. He knew its parts and their functions, which should be enough to get him through this mini activity. The Ravenclaw joined the rest of the class to the front and got a camera for himself. Drewett remained quiet as he proceeded to calibrate his camera, mentally ticking off the steps on the board along the way. With the camera positioned on the table as expected, he adjusted its focus until he was certain the white paper was no longer a blur through the viewfinder.

The sensitivity and the aperture settings confused him a little bit, as he didn't know what they technically meant. But Drewett was able to set the ISO to 200 and the aperture to f/2.8 after messing a little bit with the buttons and dials. After that, he made sure the camera was set to a low resolution. No idea why, but he was going to trust the process here.

So...he was all set now, right? With a click from the camera, Drewett took his first photo with the shutter speed set to 30, trying not to blink as he looked through the viewfinder. He looked at his shot, noting the blur in potential movement. He was just about to set the shutter speed to 15 when he noticed a young Slytherin (Austin) close by having trouble with his camera. The frown on the younger boy's also seemed to give him away. "Hey, buddy. Anything I can help you with?" the sixth year asked, a sheepish smile on his face.

Oh ... so wait, Astronomers didn't ever dabble in invention? Or wait, no sometimes if they were in research and development. Interesting too that if something new was discovered it was a collaborative effort, which meant what exactly? That someone didn't just get their individual name on a project?

Measurement and recording. The only part of math that Carsyn was okay with because measurement was an important skill when it came to baking. She was following for the most part to what Sandhu was saying, even though there were a lot of words being stated, for the most part it all made sense. Calibrating a camera to measure skyglow. That actually sounded interesting and Carsyn had to wonder if it included taking a picture of the skyglow????? Cause that's what cameras did, right?!? Reading over the procedure, as she absently fiddled with the camera in her hand - aka just turning it over and around - she finally set to work on following the procedure.

Holding the camera a few inches from her face, she moved it so the screen was entirely white, playing around with zooming in to make sure it filled the entire space.

Camera sensitivity set to ISO 200. Aperture to f/2.8. And her hand moved slightly exposing some blackboard on her screen. Moving her hand holding the camera back a little, she propped her elbow on the desk to make somewhat of a stand between her forearm and wrist to hold the camera steady. Image resolution low. And time to take a series of photos with different shutter speeds.

Okay this wasn't taking pictures of pretty skyglow?? When did they get to take sky pictures?

Having missed the first question day dreaming studiously paying attention...Blake had no idea that astronomers did so many things. He just enjoyed looking at the 'heavens' with his telescope. And now they were doing something fun with cameras. Blake enjoyed developing film with his mom prior to coming to school so this should be a piece off cake for him right.

Adjusting so that the white paper was completely in his line of vision. He adjusted the dials to the right calibration ... at least he thought so. Now that everything was set up Blake began to take the pictures as requested at he different shutter speeds. This was fun!

Austin quietly put his hand down when he heard someome acknowledge him. He nodded.
"Y-yeah. I don't know how to adjust the shutter speed," he said.
