Default Astronomy I: Total Eclipse of the Sun (Solar Eclipses)

How many of you have been to the observatory in the morning? Well, that's about to change, since today's seminar lesson is set at 7:30 in the morning. To top it all off, it also happens to be a Saturday. How cruel, that the first seminar lesson of the term is forcing you to wake up early on your first weekend back at school.

But if Professor Sandhu, who is basically nocturnal, can wake up or did she just decide to pull an all-nighter just to make sure she didn't sleep through her the day in time for this field trip, so can you.

Hopefully, you've brought your permission slips, which were enclosed with your book lists or you'll have to be left behind. And we really don't want that.

Text Cut: Permission Slip!

ASTRONOMY FIELD TRIP

On Saturday, the 4th of September, 2100, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry will be organising a field trip to the Addis Ababa University's observatory. The day will begin at 07:00 and end at 12:00 with lunch before returning to Hogwarts.

House:
Year:

Any Disabilities/Allergies:

I hereby absolve the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry of any unfortunate effects that arise from my own my refusal to employ common sense and follow the instructions I am given.

Professor Sandhu is at her usual perch on her desk, a Santa-Bag containing bulky-looking objects slung absently across her shoulder as she waits.

OOC: Welcome, everyone, to your first Astronomy lesson of the term! This is also IC the first astro lesson of term. Feel free to post your arrivals. We'll begin in approximately 24 hours. Please no longer post arrivals if you wish to avoid IC consequences! Class has begun!

LESSON PROGRESSION:

Question 1: What can you tell me about the sun?
Question 2: What do we know about when the Sun, Moon and Earth align?
Mini-Activity 1: We're off to Addis Ababa, kids!

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Cole handed over his slip to Professor Sandhu with a smile "Here you are Professor!"before he took a seat. It was then that Minjae had a distressed outburst. He had gone here for 3 years and Cole hadn't taken upon himself to remember his name. Yikes, um now he felt really bad and glanced over at the badger boy to apologize. "I'm sorry Minjae. I didn't mean to upset you. I didn't hurt my head over the summer. I just don't always put names to memory. So sorry for that. I'll remember your name from now on." Hopefully he would. Minaje wasn't a lion though. Cole felt it easier to remember his lion house buddies.

Moment's later a new girl in Ravenclaw robes entered and introduced herself. Cole shot a kind smile her way "Nice to meet you Jina. I'm Cole." He then turned to wave at Naya and Cordelia when they entered. "Hi Cordelia and Naya! Are you two as excited as i am to go get to go on a field trip to a real observatory in another country?"

By the time that Professor Sandhu had started the lesson they had also been joined by two other shaperoning professors in Professors Schmoe and Rainwater. Focusing his attention up front Cole raised his hand to answer eagerly with his sun fact. "I heard on a wireless radioprogramme that it takes 8 minutes and 19 seconds for light to travel from the sun to us on earth and that the sun is without question the brightest object in the earth's sky."

Naya wasn’t quite sure why Professor Sandhu had responded to her greeting quite the way she did. The look and the tone with which she spoke was...........ahhh. She got it. The introduction. The professor probably didn’t understand why Naya had offered her name. Since Naya had only been at school for what she thought to be a short time last year, she didn’t assume that everyone remembered her. Perhaps that was not the case. Anyway, it was too late to take it back now.

Just then, Cole asked about the field trip. “Oh yeah. I’m always up for a field trip. This should be good. I’ve never been to Ethiopia or Africa for that matter. So yeah, you could say I’m excited.”. But it was time for class to begin, so further conversation would have to wait.

It seemed like there would be work to do before they could leave for their trip. A question about the sun. Naya listened to her classmates as they gave their answers. When her turn came, she raised her hand. “Light and heat from the sun can be captured and used here on earth. It is an energy source, solar energy that can be used to generate electricity, heat and such.”

Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN

The sun?

Alessandro knew it was early, but the soft pitch of that question was too much. If Sandhu was trying to reassure First Years that they had something to contribute to lessons, Al could assure them that they did not. Yes, it was early, but Al couldn't believe the lesson had opened with the equivalent of cave people pointing at the sky and going "what's that"?

Perhaps he was not in as good of a mood as he had originally thought. He glanced across the way at Kaiser and his proximity to certain individuals and knew why.

Alessandro opted not to engage with the question. He was not in a good enough mood to play polite. Silence was far easier.

Jillian handed in her permission slip before the professor started her lesson. She was quite at awe when Professor Schmoe entered the room. She figured he would be a chaperon for this field trip, yes? It was particularly odd when he handed in his permission slip as well. Wait. Professors need to do that too? Huh.

As soon as the seats were filled, the professor began with her lesson. She's really excited about this field trip of course. She's not really sure with what's in store for them but she can tell it's going to be really fun. She can't wait for them to go but for now... the sun.

Jillian shot her hand up to answer "The sun is a large star" that much she knew. When it comes to astronomy, Jillian doesn't know a lot but she's read enough to sorta-kinda-at least know this. She agrees with Kodee that it is hot. Hmmm, anything else she should add? "The sun has about 7 layers. the core, the photosphere and the atmosphere just to name a few. " she remembered reading about them but she can name only three.

Tom listened to the Professor, his mind rattling for an answer, he didn't know much about the sun, except it was really hot, like apparently even hotter than a freshly baked apple pie, and also he heard but wasn't sure that it was warmer than the desert.

Tom raised his hand and said the first thing that came into his head. "The sun is millions of miles away from the earth?"

If the Professor thought she was going to love the field trip, it MUST be true, and it only made the second year smile wider as she handed over her permission slip. Now she REALLY couldn't wait to go.

Another thing that made her feel eager to get going was that she was going to spend the field trip with Catherine, who she missed and hoped was okay. She was being even more quiet than usual and Cece did her best not to ask why, knowing her friend was REAL serious about her studies and wouldn't want to be chatting during class. It was hard NOT to chat, though, JUST so she knew. The effort on Cecelia's part was REAL.

The sun..the sun...OH. "Professor, even though the sun seems SUPER big compared to our planets, in the WHOLE universe, it's actually not THAT huge. Like, it's a big fish in a small pond where our planets are concerned, but not so much once you get out into the ocean." Did...that anology make sense? Cecelia chanced a glance at Catherine to see what SHE thought.

"Hello, Miss Grantham," she smiled, hand outstretched. Permission slip? Thank you.

Door shut, she turned to the students (and professors) assembled and took her regular place, for when she was teaching. Right in the centre of the room, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention. There seemed to be a lot more people than normal, however, and it took more than one clap before the noise died down.

Die down, it did, however, and it wasn't long before she was ready to start the lesson.

"Welcome, everyone, to the first seminar lesson for Astronomy this term." Were they excited? Because she certainly was! "I know that many of you are wondering why I'm making you wake up this early on a weekend, and to go to class, no less. There are reasons, and they'll be made clear soon enough, I promise."

"Besides, it's a field trip. Those are fun." At least, she thought so.

"Before we start with any of that, though," she said, reaching into her bag of mystery and pulling out a pair of sunglasses. "What can you tell me about the sun?" Yes, even you, professors.

The enchanted stick of chalk was, as always, ready to take down their responses. Even if it was sulking a little at being woken up before its time.

Blake hated admitted to Bernadette that he didn't know something ... he didn't like that she knew something he didn't.

Seeing her wave to someone Blake looked to where Bernadette was waving and noticed Claudine. He did a smile and wave to her to ... more so just to make her mad... she was always mad at him, most of the time for no reason. "Wanna be my partner if we need one?" He added to Bernadette, make it easy right from now .. this way he didn't have to hunt one down later.

Oh ho ho, it wasn't portkeys in the bag after all... it was sunglasses! Bernie nearly clapped with joy. She had so much energy in the morning, and Professor Sandhu was SO COOL. Look at her, wearing sunglasses indoors, bossing around Schmoe and that other professor man.... #goals.

"Um, I'll explain about portkeys later," Bernie whispered to Blake as class was starting. Maybe they'd just um apparate there? Oh, and, "of COURSE I'll be your partner!" Hehehehe. Did he know what he was getting into here, with her for a partner? Guess he'd find out!

AnYwAy, they had a question to answer, about the sun? Besides it being hot (honestly, did that Chosen boy have to steal all her answers?), Bernie had to think of something clever to say, that hadn't been said yet.

"When the Earth is tilted toward the sun, in the northern hemisphere we have summer, and the southern hemisphere has winter," she pointed out. "So the sun and Earth's rotation 'round it is the reason for the seasons?" She was pretty sure she'd learned this in Muggle primary school.

Whew... Blake let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding once Bernadette agreed to be his partner. What was it with this girl that Blake was so obsessed intrigued by. Regardless Blake held a grin on his face that wouldn't go way. "Thanks." He whispered back to her.

Anyway .. yeah .. so wait what was he doing again?? What had the Professor asked them ... he was rather unsure ..... "What was the question again?" Blake blushed a little at his lack of attention to the question .. he promised himself he would pay more attention from here on out.

Was he supposed to sit down? Gunnar remained unsure even as more students began to arrive, because even though he was sure that they'd be leaving soon, he also figured they had some things to talk about before they did. But he soon noticed Kodee beckoning him over, and he started to step that way before his eyes fell on who he was standing next to. Kaiser. Great. Hadn't Kodee noticed that they were no longer friends?

At any rate, Gunnar would be polite. And he wasn't about to forgo his other friends because of any issues he might have with anyone else. "Come on, mate, it's not that early," he murmured, amused, to the nearly asleep Gryffindor. No, okay, it totally was too early on a Saturday. But that's what a hot cup of caffeine was for.

"Drew," he nodded to the Ravenclaw quietly as he joined them, smirking slightly at the salute. "At ease." Was this going to be a recurring theme? Because... well maybe he could get used to it.

And once Professor Sandhu began, he turned his attention towards her. Gunnar was used to this type of elementary question during these seminar types of lessons when they had all the years present together. He could only assume that it was meant to be easily answered by all ages, and he typically kept silent to allow the youngest ones answer. But perhaps he could offer an educated answer among the wealth of vague and basic.

As he raised his hand, he caught sight of Alessandro looking their way and he furtively gestured for him to come over. He supposed the seventh year boys could group together, but also he'd really appreciate his presence. But just as quickly, he turned his eyes back to Sandhu to offer his answer.

"As most people are diurnal, or most active during the daytime, the sun is a big factor in establishing and regulating our circadian rhythm. Though it also does that for other diurnal creatures as well as nocturnal creatures, and even in plants. In fact, the sun is one of the key components for plants to grow. Plants need the sun to live; we need the sun to live. All living creatures do." Gunnar paused. "Sorry, professor. Really broad question." He could go on and on about the benefits of the sun in relation to flora and fauna, but he doubted that was so relevant for Astronomy class today.

Flynn hurried to hand in his slip once the claps startled him out of his reverie. It was a bit embarrassing and he decided he would pretend like he hadn't just completely lost his entire mind for several minutes, but maybe he would write to Fintan about it and see if he had any advice because what if it KePt HaPPeniNG?

For now though he put his hand up to offer an answer to the question, determined not to let Professor Sandhu think badly of him and wanting to make up for his lack of focus. "The sun makes people happy, professor." It was a serious answer actually! "And healthy too. Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to the sun and people need that. You can get really sick or really sad if you don't have enough." He was relieved when his voice didn't crack too much too. Maybe it was going to behave itself today?

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Did she need to...wash her face? Was she implying that Nettie looked DIRTY? You know what, it was too early to even think about it. She just smiled at her and headed towards the group of fellow Ravenclaws, settling herself near Ewan and Missa.

Sandhu had moved on and was now talking about the main topic of the lesson - the sun. Ok, this Nettie could handle. She smiled and raised her hand. "The sun is just a star, and even though it seems like the largest star to us - it's actually the CLOSEST, which is why it seems so large and scary. Other stars in our solar system are actually much larger and hotter - but they're so far away they seem like nothing but specks," she explained. She had learned a lot about the sun for her OWLs - and to be honest it was kind of cool. Outer space was cool in general, but she would never admit that.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Minjae made eye contact back at Ewan as the Prefect looked at him as he walked by. He didn’t lower his gaze but stared right back. Still, he knew that it was wrong of him to talk about someone behind their back and when he he heard what the Ravenclaw said the Hufflepuff actually apologized. ”Sorry Ewan” he said before he turned his attention to Cole as he too apologized to him. Waving his hands, the permission form flapping in the air with the motion, Minjae laughed. ”I’m just messing with you, no hard feelings” They were from different Houses so it was understandable they didn’t know each other. No one was personally friends with everyone at school.

”Here you go Professor” he said as he handed her his permission form signed by his father. ”Oh, me too. i can’t even remember what i had for breakfast…wait did i even have breakfast today?” he stared in to space as he thought. No…he had not.

As the class officially began, Minjae listened to the other students as they gave their answers. Kodee’s answer made him stifle a laugh but with the added bonus by a second year Gryffindor (Phoebe) he did let out a small laugh.

However when Professor Schmoe gave his VERY LONG answer, Minjae started to zone out. It was probably fascinating what the rest had to say as well but the Hufflepuff was too busy taking out his very expensive watch from his pocket and putting it on his left wrist and checked it out. Perfect.

Charlie listened as Professor Sandhu asked about what they all knew about the sun. Really? Didn't everyone learn about the sun. Her mom had taught her things here and there, but even her primary school taught her a fair amount of things about the solar system. And that was a muggle school!

She knew it was a star, that it was the center of the universe, that it provided the daylight we needed to see. It also reflected off of the moon and gave it the glow we know it as. But everyone was saying this so she wasn't so sure that she needed to pipe up just yet. She seriously did not need to draw attention to herself in classes just yet. Outside of classes would she wear her big bow in her hair and bright dresses--sure but just hide here in class for now.

She rolled her eyes when she realised Blake was blushing. Friend- stealer. A hint of jealousy welled up inside her and she quickly looked away from the pair. Claudine Blaze did not do jealousy; she outright refused to. Then why was she pretending not to notice the waves?

Instead, the second year distracted herself with observing Schmoe’s arrival. Was he… was he really handing over a permission slip? She stared. Surely he didn’t need one; he was an adult. Schmoe was weird indeed but he had grown on Claudine… just as Barlow had.

Now that they were getting started, Claudine zoned in on Sandhu alone. The sun? That made sense it be a topic of the lesson as they were attending the lesson during the day. “It’s a star at the center of the solar system.’’ Basic. Her reply was a basic one one but basics were good, Claudine thought as she lowered her hand.

Entirely oblivious to the exchange between the three first years (or, at least, graciously pretending to be until she was in the safety of the staffroom), Simran only really took visible notice of the young Blaze once she'd raised her hand to answer the question.

"In the centre of our solar system, yes. Very good,"
she said, nodding in approval. "It would do well to remember that ours isn't the only system of planets that orbits a star, however."

Kodee groaned when the door closed for the simple fact it meant the lesson field trip seminar thing would be starting and that meant WORK. Briefly, the boy glanced to Schmoe and Rainwater, wondering how they’d managed to let little ole Sandhu rope them into this. Surely even they could appreciate sleeping in on a weekend. Professors were mostly people, too.

His eyes sank closed, still for now trusting Kaiser for support. He was listening, no worries but somewhere off in the distance he could hear his pillow and blankets calling, urging him to come back, enticing him to drift off.

Lazily—and with much effort—his hand rose. First question. Had to answer. Right. He got this regardless of the position of his eyelids. What did he know about the sun?

“It’s hot.”

Boom. Participated. That was probably it for the day.

On one hand, Simran was highly amused by Kodee Chosen's answer, and wanted to let it slide with no further comment just because it was, really, such a great one.

On the other hand, the facts and also her literal job description currently stood in the way of that. Bummer.

"Actually, it's reasonably cool for a star, Master Chosen," she sighed. "Hotter than anything most of us will encounter, though, yes."

... He seemed awake for now, yes?

"Good morning..." She quickly replied to the woman her lowest tone because that was too late anyway, so if she hadn't heard... Catherine doubted it would make that much of a difference.

Urgh, Merlin, why couldn't things just go smoothly for her this first week at school??

Honestly, Catherine had almost convinced herself she'd be alone during this trip - possibly shadowing one of the older students she knew just to be on the safe side - so when Cecelia came to join her instead of her brother, she was genuinely surprised. Pleasantly surprised.

Nodding her head, the young brunette sent her best friend the tiniest of smiles, but quickly turned her attention back to the front because she wasn't one to get in trouble. And also because the professor now probably thought she was rude so being caught chatting wouldn't help her.

Catherine was indeed curious to know why that day and that time and also that place they were going to. The professor's question get her thinking, but she couldn't pinpoint anything specific that they might be looking at that morning, especially as she didn't know the area they were going to visit at all. Maybe it was something specific to that place? That'd be nice to see.

But what did they know about the sun? Catherine wondered what kind of answers the professor was looking for. Would saying it was mostly made of hydrogen be good enough? Was that what she was looking for? Or was it more along the lines of how it influenced life on Earth in different ways in different places - that could explain why they were going somewhere else?. Or perhaps it could be something as straight forward as one shouldn't look straight at it becaus--

'It's hot.'

The first year slowly turned her head towards the person who had said that. What in the name of Merlin? Was he joking? Surely he was joking. And he looked like he could be one of the oldest students there. He must be joking. It wasn't a funny joke - it actually made him look stupid -, but Catherine knew many people who thought they were funny and said the silliest things. But in class? What a bad example this boy was. A Gryffindor. Oh dear. Hopefully Cecelia and Noah wouldn't be swayed by that very limited mental capacity.

Yuck.

Well, this particular question didn't have a particular answer she was looking for. An answer that would tie into her next question, certainly, but there was no answer that would be amiss here except one that was literally factually incorrect.

Unfortunately, since the Miss Mordaunt had not supplied her with an answer, there would be no discussion here. A shame, but there would be more opportunity for that later on, if she was feeling up to it.

Oooh, the chemical composition of the sun! Simran was impressed, and visibly so, since her eyebrows shot so far up they might as well have disappeared into her hairline.

"Why, yes," she said, nodding. "The sun, like just about everything in the universe, is made primarily of hydrogen. It is 75 percent Hydrogen by composition, but quite a bit less if we go by mass."

Well, she was glad to be of service, Miss James. And to be entertaining while so. Truly, every professor's lifelong dream, not to get irrelevant as they got old, and Simran was aware that she was dragging the average age here at Hogwarts significantly higher.

Her answer, however, quite nearly sent Simran into hysterics, and the professor had to press her knuckles to her lips to keep the laughter inside. It took a few seconds for her to compose herself, so Phoebe should be really quite proud of herself.

"Unfortunately, neither the sun nor Master Chosen are the centre of of the universe," she said, sadly. "Good attempt, though!"

But that was something to worry about another day because his focus was starting to drift to something else. Or, well, to two people: Schmoe and Rainwater, but mostly Schmoe because the man seemed to be handing over a piece of parchment? Was that a permission slip? Yeaaaaaaaaah, Lucas was confused. Or it could be a long list of his allergies which, well, seemed more realistic.

No offence, Schmoe.

The smile stayed on the fifth year’s face as he turned his attention to Sandhu again as she started the lesson. A lesson about........ the Sun? His mouth formed into a small ‘o’ of realisation at that. Suddenly, the trip, the country, the time of this lesson..... it was all starting to make sense. Granted, he didn’t know what the field trip was going to include but he felt like he had an idea. Or a guess.

As for the question, his hand shot up into the air. "The sun is a great source of energy for life on Earth. The most important one, actually." The world as they knew it wouldn’t be the same without i-

And then Phoebe answered.

And Lucas had to do everything he could to try not to laugh.

Simran would never mind the long discussions she had with Lucas Dakest on Astronomy, or even on other topics that may or may not interest him. She welcomed them always -- except when she was eating. That time was sacred. Nobody interrupted Simran Evangeline Sandhu (née Fernsby-Iyer) when she was eating.

She did, however, notice the dawning of a realisation on his face as the question was posed, and winked at him just to confirm his suspicions.

"Very good, Master Dakest," she said, nodding in approval. "You're right. Just about every form of energy here on Earth is derived from the Sun in some form or other."

The sun.

Well, that was at least one topic she had seen coming. It was also something she at least had some background information on. They'd even talked about it a good bit at muggle school. She hesitated for a second as she thought about muggle school. She kind of missed it now, even if she was super happy to be at magical school instead. She wondered if her friends missed her, too.

Anyway...back to the sun. She raised her hand. "It's the reason we don't freeze, we have light, and we have plants growing on earth," she said. The sun was pretty much how they were staying alive. If it burnt up, earth would pretty much be a goner. Thank you, muggle school science class.

Simran smiled as another first year piped up with an answer -- the whole reason she started the lesson with general questions was so that the younger students could contribute as well. It made no sense to allow a group of students to attend a lesson that they wouldn't be able to follow, now, would it?

"Very good, Miss Bellchant. It is, indeed, our primary source of light and heat energy, which are necessary for all those processes."

His curiosity about the bag only grew when the professor pulled a pair of sunglasses out of it. Was that bag full of nothing but hundreds of pairs of sunglasses? Were they regular sunglasses or magic ones that would let you view the sun safely…? She mentioned the sun, and looking at the sun, even with sunglasses on, was dangerous.*

Heath had sooo many questions that it was hard to put them aside to concentrate on the subject at hand. Okay, something about the sun. Ooh, he knew this! The problem was his mind was buzzing with so many facts about the sun, he didn't know which one to give. He didn't want to say the wrong thing and look dumb in front of everybody… though whatever answer he gave, he supposed it couldn't possibly be as bad as the "It's hot" guy.

Heath's hand shot up, and when the professor called on him, he said, "The sun is about 92.96 million miles away from the earth." How far was that in parsecs? The thought crossed his mind to ask, but then he remembered she (and the rest of the class) probably didn't know what a parsec was so he kept his mouth shut. He could always calculate it on his own later… or try to, anyway. He was really bad at math!

Simran did, indeed know what a parsec was. It would have been a little difficult to survive her undergraduate degree in Astrophysics, much less the PhD and postdoctoral work that followed, if she hadn't. It's probably for the best, then, that she couldn't read minds, or she would be quite insulted by this.

And here was Kodee, predictably zombie-ing his way into the room. Some things never changed, and that thought was oddly comforting. Kaiser did indeed remain solid and upright and, by all accounts, a sturdy post for Kodee to lean on. And then he saw him beckoning Gunnar closer, but immediately pretended he hadn't noticed. He wouldn't make a big deal out of it or anything; that wouldn't be remotely fair. Plus, he could be civil. Frustratingly so, as it turned out.

Anyway, right. Moving on. Onto the sun. Well, not onto the sun. It was hot, as Kodee had said. A bit too hot for that. Speaking of Kodee, Kaiser reached across and helpfully propped his head upright with one hand, so that he could still provide leaning-post services, but at least nobody could accuse him of not trying to keep his friend awake. This was not a friend who made that kind of thing easy. Kaiser sometimes suspected Kodee would sleep through an upended bucket of ice cold water, if it ever came to that.

Oh, right. The question. Kaiser answered it with the same almost-toneless voice he'd greeted Sandhu with. "It's huge. Well over a million Earths could fit inside it. Theoretically." Just like the sun's exact size, the precise number of Earths that could fit inside it never stuck in his head, especially not these days, but that answer would serve. It was, at least, an answer.

Her attention being drawn to Kaiser also meant that it would be drawn to Kodee. Who seemed to be falling deeper into a slumber. Which was relatable, really. And while she'd rather deal with this the way she usually did, there were two other professors there who would probably have words to say about her methods.

The exact number of Earths that the Sun could fit in it, though, was a piece of trivia that had never quite stuck with Simran either. "Really? Over a million?" she asked, moving from her spot and towards the blackboard, picking up a piece of chalk. "Let's find out."

Referring to the textbook on her desk for the diameters, she began the calculations. A learning experience for everyone!

"4/3 times pi is a constant, so we can ignore that. And that gives us --"

And boy, oh boy! Did they ever!!

Schmoe was very eager to participate in the lesson. Was he allowed to participate? He wasn’t too sure. Which is perhaps why he was so hesitant to raise his own hand. It was only the EAGER need to respond to the question that inevitably did it. And so he raised his hand, just as eager as anyone else in the room!

"Errrr. The sun has been an object of mystery and awe in many cultures throughout the history of the human race,” it was a fascinating commonality that everyone shared. The sun. It was present for all, you know!? It was no wonder that there were so many mythical references to that great big ball of gas in the sky. ”In many cultures the sun is worshiped, while in others it is thought to be a supernatural entity. The sun crops up again! and! again! within the contexts of various cultures and errr religious practices as well.” He nervously fiddled with his bowtie. ”Take the solar calendar of the Aztec people. Just one example of our fascination with the sun, as a human species.” Schmoe found the sun fascinating too. Which is why he was SO excited for this field trip. ”It errr is also very interesting to note that the earliest dieties associated with the sun are all goddesses.” Powerful women were everywhere. Even the sky, it seemed.

Now, Simran was not fundamentally opposed to having Finneas answer her questions, though she was a little uncertain as to how long it had been since he was in an Astronomy lesson. But she called on him to answer all the same, and his response was enough to make her sit back down on the edge of her desk just to take it all in.

Huh. She was no anthropologist, but it looked like the giant man-child did know his stuff after all.

Not that she could tell, from his PhD, or anything.

"I-- That was very enlightening, Professor Schmoe. Thank you."

Could someone bring them back to Astronomy now, please? She was feeling suddenly very out of her element.

Not correct, unless Cordelia was mistaken. ”The sun is the center of our solar system but not, as some astronomers used to believe, the center of the universe.” Did the universe even have a center? Cordelia couldn’t even comprehend the size of the universe, much less calculate the center of it. The universe was mind-bogglingly big. And to think she thought it was a long walk from Gryffindor Tower to potions class. That was just peanuts to space.

Why was Professor Schmoe answering the questions too? Wasn’t he supposed to leave that for the students? And had he just handed the astronomy professor a permission slip? Why in Merlin’s name did a professor need a permission slip? Whelp. If this was what Hogwarts was sending to look after them, she was NOT confident that they were in good hands. Quite the opposite, in fact. How was it that Headmaster Trent was allowing Schmoe to be in charge of a whole house of students? Cordelia felt quite glad that she wasn’t a Ravenclaw. In general she didn’t trust any adults to keep her safe except for maybe a select few care workers at Stemp House. It was somewhat of a comfort to her that Gus would also be joining them for this field trip. While she wouldn’t say that she liked him, she trusted Gus a great deal more than Schmoe as adult supervision. Not that she cared much for adult supervision anyway. Usually she was more worried about how to sneak away from the adult supervision than if the adult supervision could competently supervise.

"Correct, Miss Winklebleck," she said, smiling. "I hope that answers any questions you might have had, Miss James?" Otherwise, she was always open to answering them, as long as she actually had the answers.

Yes. Good. Back in her element, and moving on.

Merlin, if only he took his muggle studies seriously back then, then he wouldn't have to be thinking long and hard to answer this question. Noah briefly looked at Catherine who was now with Cece and wondered what his twin might be thinking. He was sure she's got all the answers. The Gryffindor then looked out the window and triiiiieeed his best to recall any other information that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Ooh! Hand up! "It's the reason why Earth and the rest of the planets in our solar system remain in orbit, professor!" he said, quite pleased with himself. Well would you look at that? Stealing Catherine's science homework in muggle school came in handy. Oops?

Now that's done, can they go noooow?

Well, to be far, Noah. Simran was fast approaching 86. She wouldn't pretend she was young, no matter how physically active she may be. But yes, she did need help -- and she would likely need help even if she had been a good thirty years younger. Maybe he didn’t? After all, he was a little distracted when he’d walked in, what with Minjae talking about him and all. Putting that out of his head now, he checked his pockets and found nothing. He must have handed his slip in. He was sure the professor would find it if she looked again.

Focusing on the lesson at hand now, he looked at the Professor as she discussed the trip. Ewan really didn’t mind astronomy. Sure, it wasn’t his favourite thing but it was quite interesting when you think about it. The amount of space up there and the planets, solar systems, galaxies, black holes…There was were endless things to discover out there. Now who didn’t find that fascinating? “The sun is actually not that big depending on what you compare it to. It’s the biggest thing in our solar system but if you compare it to some of the other stars out there, or red giants, it’s not actually that big” answering her question with a small smile on his face as he considered how big the sun was and then how big some of the other stars were out there. It really was just mind blowing.

Even some of the other answers that his fellow class mates had gives were just as interesting, if not more than his, particularly that of Professor Schmoe’s and then Missa’s too. This reminded him of something he’d read about the Egyptians and their beliefs about the sun. “The Egyptians actually believed that there was a sun god called Ra. They worshiped him and considered him to be the king of all gods which kind of shows how important the sun was, even back then when people didn’t really know what it was” adding on to their answers now. He just loved all of the ancient civilizations and found them just as fascinating as space. Honestly, there wasn’t a lot that this prefect wasn’t interested in.

-- ANOTHER non-astronomical response? These kids were really on a roll today.

"Interesting points, Miss Renaldi and Master Jones."

Cecelia chanced a glance at Catherine to see what SHE thought.

Any frustration Simran had been feeling melted away as Cecelia gave her response, however. It was always heartening to see younger students describe complex phenomena in their own words, even if oversimplified.

"Excellent analogy, Miss Summers!"

And another Gryffindor second year!

"Excellent point, Miss Grantham!" she said, nodding. A new point, at that. "The tilt of the Earth's axis allows for the side tilted towards the sun to experience more of its effects -- so, summer."

Anyway .. yeah .. so wait what was he doing again?? What had the Professor asked them ... he was rather unsure ..... "What was the question again?" Blake blushed a little at his lack of attention to the question .. he promised himself he would pay more attention from here on out.

Simran's eyes narrowed as Blake asked what the question was. Surely, from his classmates' responses, he could hazard a guess? No?

Well, no matter. She was about to ask the next question anyway.

Simran listened, fully attentive as the head boy gave his response, beginning with the astronomical and moving on to the herbological. And it was done with such grace that she didn't even start freaking out, as she usually did, where plants that were not tea plants were concerned. She had a tendency to kill any plant she touched, it was horrible.

"No need to apologise, Master McCarthy," she said, smiling. "The question was intentionally broad, and you bring up some very excellent points."

The young Whitlock's statement made Simran's lips twitch upwards despite herself. The sun did not, at this current point of time, make her feel quite happy, but she got where the kid was coming from.

"Very good, Master Whitlock," she said encouragingly. "The Sun is indeed necessary for the production and absorption Vitamin D, which is important in the production of certain neurotransmitters, without which, we would be much more prone to illness and despression. It's actually why we've got such a thing as Seasonal Affective Depression."

Now, Miss Gladin, she would NEVER imply you looked dirty. No. Just that you looked sleepy. A good splash of cold water on the face usually did the trick, at least for a short while.

"Absolutely right, Miss Gladin!"
she said, nodding. Maybe the Ravenclaw wasn't as sleepy as Simran had estimated.

Perfect.

No response from you, Master Yoon? Or from you, Miss Rivers? That's a shame, but it happened. It was also on the wrong side of eight in the morning, and this could be easily forgiven.

Was that everyone who intended to answer?

Simran's eyes swept out across the room, to check for raised hands that she had missed, and upon finding none, clasped her hands together and smiled. Moving on!

"You all raised some very good points about the Sun, and why it is important to us, and some other very fun facts."

"Now, for those of you who are returning students, you may remember that we discussed celestial allignment last term, and orbits the term before that." Was she preparing them for this precise moment? PERHAPS. "Now, that in mind, what do you think these things have in common?"

She left a few seconds for them to think about it.

"Consider: The Earth orbits the Sun, and is orbited by the moon. What do we know about when these three bodies allign?"

OOC: The lesson will continue in approximately 36-48 hours from the time of this post!

Being seasonally depressed sounded, well, sad, and Flynn was suddenly glad he didn't live in a place that had barely any sun, and wondered if that meant that people who lived in tropical places were the happiest and most vitamin D-enriched people in the world. The maths about earths fitting into the sun was a little tough to follow but he thought hard about all the times Mrs Odessa had shown the Stark kids similar calculations and he followed along as best he could.

As for Celestial alignment, his hand shot up eagerly. "Its about light, shadow, and perspective, professor." Did he need to elaborate? 'Cause he couldn't. He had turned his head slightly and suddenly became tongue-tied because The Smile™ had turned into The Laugh™ and Flynn' s entire brain just went ahead and flatlined.

Isla just smiled when the professor complimented her answer. But when she responded to Kaiser's answer with something that was way over Isla's head, the first year just stared in disbelief. Ummm, yeah. Whatever that stuff meant...

Thank Merlin the lesson didn't require them to do any calculations about the size of the sun. Apparently they had to know what was discussed the first two years before this one, though. If this lesson was any indication, Isla was doomed. Wasn't Astronomy optional?

At least muggle school science had somewhat helped her know a little about the next question, so she raised her hand. "Sometimes it can cause us to see a lot of the moon, and sometimes it can cause us to see none at all," she said. She wasn't even sure if this was right. She just remembered something like this being talked about in class.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was only half paying attention to all the answers and that was only because she was loosing interest in them. It didn’t seem as if some of the students were even trying to be serious about the lesson, as was reflected in their replies. Well, she understood younger ones like herself especially wouldn’t know a lot but some of the older ones? Claudine was silently judging them.

She thought for a good moment before raising her hand for the second question. “An eclipse?’’ she asked, her tone suggesting that she was uncertain of what she said. This uncertainty came about for two reasons: 1. Was an eclipse even the answer? And 2. If so, which type of eclipse was it?

Default Minjae and Claudine

Ewan cast a quick glance over at Minjae as he heard something he didn’t quite expect. An apology. With a small nod and smile, he just waved his hand in front of him before replying “Don’t worry about it. Just don’t make a habit out of it” actually surprised that the younger Hufflepuff apologised. Maybe he was more Hufflepuff than he’d first originally thought.

After greeting Nettie with a smile, he focusing back on the lesson at hand, trying to remember what exactly they’d discussed last term in astronomy. If she was expecting him to remember that far back then she was mistaken because he couldn’t remember what he’d had to eat for breakfast this morning let alone what they’d covered last term. Then again, he didn’t have breakfast this morning because they had to be here so early. So, they were to focus on alignment? Well, surely that had to do with eclipses? Claudine had the right idea. “When they align, it can cause an eclipse. Either a Lunar eclipse or a Solar eclipse” Lunar eclipses were his personal favourite. There was just something special about an eclipse at night.

The sun!!! Right!!! Now Blake remember what they were talking about! Surely he knew something about the sun. Anything besides it's hot ... but then the Professor posed a new question. Okay ... focusing his mind he dug deep into his 12 year old memory to think about what happens when the sun, moon, and earth all align.

He smiled remembering the last time it happened and the memory he had of his mom pulling him out of primary school to see it. "It makes an eclipse." Short and sweet and too the point.

Hooooly Merlin, they were really doing this, weren't they?

Proper learning, proper getting into Astronomy before 8 on a Saturday? Who's idea of a joke was this? Speaking of jokes, Kodee allowed his head to be propped up by Kaiser, only so he could open his eyes and give a good old fashioned boyish grin to one Phoebe James for her marvelous response. "Sure sounds like I'm already the centre of yours, adding me to your answer like that Pheebes. I'm honoured. No one else got a mention." Would've given her a wink, too, but it was honestly TOO EARLY FAM.

So yeah, Gunnar, it waaasss that early. "Mate, you have no idea." He muttered to his Head Friend.

Why was Al standing all the way over there? Tt was so far from his friends. Much like he'd done with Gunnar, he nodded Alessandro over. Surely he wouldn't be able to learn from all the way over there. Drew, too. Wouldn't do him any good unless he got closer.

Kodee gave a half audible groan after hearing the second question. It was confirmation that in fact, this was happening. He wasn't in a dream of sorts. This was...they were...and there was talk of past lessons. The boy's head drooped right back down, reluctant as all hell. What did they all have in common? "They were all taught by you at one point or the other." He mumbled, uncertain if the Professor or any but those closest to him had even heard.

Tired was as tired did.

Her attempted guess wasn't even correct, she wanted to laugh at that really. It sounded exactly like a guess and Professor Simran knew well. She's realllllyyyy good.

Jillian nodded when the professor spoke about celestial allignment- she doesn't remember most of the lesson but she does remember the class took place. Oopps. She'll be better this term. Now what do these things have in common other than of course being talked in Astronomy? Hmmm... Jillian hummed and thought about it. What do we know about when these three bodies allign? "An eclipse will happen" she answered after shooting her hand up. Was she correct? Well, hopefully she is.

Early mornings Carsyn had RELUCTANTLY come to accept as being a ruthless part of her Hogwarts Education. But early mornings on a SATURDAY was just harsh. The fifth year had things to do. Boys to ogle at. OWLs to study for. And worst of all, the seminar came in the form of Astronomy, which meant skiving off it wasn't even option because it was a core lesson AND it was her head of House, which meant Sandhu would know something was up if she didn't show. But she was not happy about it.

Or the fact that she needed a permission slip, which she conveniently didn't get signed but had practiced the art of parent forgery for years which meant she was well adept at forging the needed signature.

Huh. Why was Schmoe here?? And the new plants professor whom she forgot his name from the feast already? Had she missed something? Wayyyy too early and why was Sandhu talking something about the sun? Squinting out toward the window, she literally was lost and was going to blame it on the fact that the sun had barely risen.

Numbers. Uhhh this wasn't going to be on her OWLs, was it?? Cause Carsyn was not going to remember any of those numbers on the blackboard. What do they know when the Sun, Moon and Earth align? "It's a celestial
once in a lifetime experience."
Mmmhm. Sounded reasonable and true ????

Celestial alignment, oooh! Bernie knew the eclipse answer, but eclipses required special sunspecs, and the professor looked like she was wearing regular ones, so. Again, her elder housemate (Kodee) had the best answer here, which she snickered at, and offered her own answer.

"I think weird stuff happens when the sun, the Earth, and the moon align. It's a special time for centaurs." She was making that up but it sounded true.

No, the sun wasn't the center? Oh... universe and solar system. Right. Got it. But her joke was super funny, and the professor had looked almost amused, and that was really way more important.

But she didn't think she was dumb, did she? Phoebe would cry real actual tears if the professor thought she was stupid. She eagerly waved her hand in the air at the next question. "What Bernie said! Right? I think when the sun and moon and earth align, it's supposed to, like... reveal your karmic pathways." Or that's what she'd read somewhere.
