DADA Lesson 2

It was getting really chilly out, and Rae banked the fires in her classroom before settling at her desk. Merlin, it was COLD, and she couldn't seem to warm up. She summoned her scarf and wrapped it around her neck before opening the classroom.

Amelia shuffled into the DADA classroom for the second lesson of the term. She sat down near the front, and took out her notes and a quill. Once everything was all laid out in front of her, she looked up at the Professor surprised to see her all decked out in a scarf. "Hello Professor Rae! Are you feeling alright?" she asked, hoping that she wasn't catching whatever Dresden had.

Ponessa entered, and found herself a desk, which was uncommonly in the front, "Hello Professor." She hot out her best quill, DADA notebook, and set her wand on the desk, "Cool enough for you?" She asked with a smile.

"Chilly, maybe, but I'm alright. The room takes a while to heat up after the fire goes out," she smiled at Amelia. "How are you today?"

Rapunzel eagerly arrived on time for Defense Against the Dark Arts, an unusual feat for her. She smiled politely at Headmistress Rae and took a seat near Amelia with a simple, "Hello!" She couldn't wait to get started...

Josh walked into the classroom as he smiled at the professor." hello professor." He figured someone had already asked her how her day was so instead of bugging her even more he just found an empty seat.He sat down as he pulled his books out and waited for class to start.

Juniper stepped into the DADA classroom. “Hello Professor,” she said softly as she took a seat in the front and set her books on the desk.

Alexis walked into the DADA classroom and was very thankful for the fire, she then looked up at the Professor and said "Hello Professor Rae."

Willow walked in the DADA classroom, for the second lesson of the term. For the first time in the whole term, she didn't had to run to get to class. She was early.

"Hello Professor Rae" Willow said happily, to the headmistress. Making her way to her usual seat in the middle of the classroom, Willow spotted nature-freak Goodwin. She gave her a polite nod, and waited for the class to start.

Rae smiled at them all. "We'll wait a few more minutes, but I want you to pull out your quill and parchment. Wands at the ready. This will be a practical lesson."

Hayli walked into the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, grinning widely. She polietly greeted the proffesor. "Hello Professor!" The redhead then skipped away to find a seat, her pigtails bouncing.

Finding a seat somewhere, Hayli sat down. Pulling her DADA book out of her bag, a quill, and parchment, and set it down on her desk. She then took out her wand when she heard Professor Rae say to. She then waited, somewhat, patiently for class to start. Not really.

It wasn't long before the seat next to her became occupied by the familiar, cheerful face of Rapunzel. "Hey Punz!," she said, and turned attention back to the front where Rae said it would be a practical lesson. This should be fun...

Juniper nodded at Willow but quickly broke eye contact. She did not like eye contact. Hearing the professor’s directions, she carefully arranged her parchment and quill on her desk so that she could rest her elbows on the edge. With that task complete, Juniper took her wand from her pocket and rolled it between her fingers as she waited for class to start.

Laylee walked into ther DADA classroom and waved to the professor. It was very weird to have your Headmistress as you teacher, but Laylee had gotten used to it. She picked a desk in the middle of the room and started setting out her things.
When Laylee was settled she looked up at the professor, wondering if she knew anything about the candy or the students. Laylee wondered if she should tell her her suspicions, but she wasnt sure if they were true. Plus the Headmistress probably already knew about Professor Pierce turning a child into an animal in class... But did she know about the suspicious candy in her office under her desk?
Laylee decided that she wouldn't say anything until she had evidence that her theory was correct...
She got out her quill and wrote DADA at the top of her page.

Rapunzel heard the professor and whipped a blank piece of parchment out of her bag. She already had her favorite purple quill tucked behind her ear and her wand on the desk too, so she turned towards Amelia.

"Hey gurrrl," she drawled, grinning. "Looks to be an interesting class today..."

Wednesday stepped inside the classroom and waved hello to Professor Rae. She looked around for an empty seat and and found one behind her friend, Josh. Quietly, she walked to that seat and smiled at him.

Josh saw willow as he smiled at her." Hey willow." he said waving a little. " hey how did Quidditch try outs go?" he was sure she made the team. She made it last year.

Willow heard Professor Rae saying that it was going to be a practical lesson, so she quickly packed her book, parchment, quill and ink and took out her wand. She had to admit that practical lessons scared her a bit.

At the moment she heard a familiar voice, she turned and saw that it was Josh. "Not good" She said sternly before looking back at the Professor. The last thing she needed, was to think about that. Besides, she didn't wanted to make Ravenclaw lose points. Not when Slytherin was so ahead of them.

"Excellent. Now, I know we covered some duelling basics in our last joint lesson, but let's do a brief review. You have yourself and your opponent. What is the first thing you do?"

Alex laid out everything she thought she might need. She pulled her robes closer to her, was it just her or was the the room a little chilly?
She raised her hand to answer the prfessors question. "In a proper duel you bow to each other before you begin."

Review, I like that, Amelia thought smiling to herself. She raised her hand and answered, "The first thing you might do is to bow to your opponent - always best to be polite."

Juniper raised her hand. "Bow and then take your stance," she said quietly.

Rapunzel realized the question had been sufficiently answered for her, so she sat quietly with her quill at the ready.

"Good, Willow. You draw your wand and bow. Five points for Ravenclaw. And... what do we do next?"

"Pace away, about ten steps, correct?" Rapunzel answered with her hand up.

Amelia smiled at the third year, as she answered the next question so quickly. She instead just wrote the order of steps for dueling down, as a reminder. No sense in repeating what's been said...

"I'm glad we're doing this review," Rae laughed at the collection of answers she was hearing. "Five points for Hufflepuff. Rapunzel is right. Next, we turn and walk 10 paces in the opposite direction. You stop... and...?"

"Take a stance?" Rapunzel raised her hand again.

Daphne scribbled down some notes. She mindlessly rolled her wand with her left hand across the desk.

"Yes, good! Consensus! We take our stance. Treats for everyone!" She laughed with glee and moved around to dig in her desk drawer. "I happen to have some fudge from Hogsmeade. Take a piece and pass it on." She dropped the box at the first desk and moved to stand again.

"So... we take our stance. We had a chance to practice that at the last class, so I won't take you through that again, but I want to remind you to keep your posture flexible and fluid. Let's move on. There were a few specific spells we practiced last time, so I want to review those spells. What does Expelliarmus do?"

"Disarm your opponent" Willow said

[Anna Banana]

"Draw your wand and bow...turn and walk 10 paces in the opposite direction," Anna copied down onto her parchment. She then looked up at the professor to wait and listen for what was next.

[Waddles]

Juniper raised her hand. "It disarms your opponent," she said.

"Expelliarmus disarms your opponent," Anna replied.

Rapunzel already knew the purpose of expelliarmus, but she jotted it down anyways and took a yummy piece of fudge before passing the box.

Wednesday tried to hard to remember, nut nothing came up. Come one! You know this one!...Doesn't it disarm your opponent?...She didn't know if she was right or not so she raised her hand and answered, "It disarms you opponent." I hope I'm right...

"Excellent... it disarms your opponent. I'll give you five points, Willow, but only if you can be more specific. What EXACTLY happens if you hit your opponent with this spell?"

Anna knew what happened when you hit someone with this. She wished she would have said it before. However, she couldn't explain that out loud, since Willow had been called on.

"It knocks the opponent's wand from the hand, I believe" Willow answered

"Excellent, Willow. It does indeed cause the wand to fly from your opponents hand, and if you're really good, it will fly through the air to YOU." She clapped briefly for Willow and all the students who had answered. "There is one more spell from that class that I'd like to review before we get further into the lesson. Protego. Any takers?"

"Protego is the shielding charm," Anna explains.

"It, well, pretty much blocks the spell....causes a shield, if you will."

[Angie]

"Its a protective spell I believe. It's some sort of invisible shield" Willow answered once more

It's a defensive spell.It sends the spell away from you like a magic shield.

Juniper raised her hand. "Protego is a shield charm. It blocks minor hexes and spells."

Amelia raised her brow skeptically as Rae passed around some fudge from Hogsmeade. Her brother always told her to be skeptical of whatever was given to her; especially food. But this was the Headmistress so surely there was no harm, right? With a large sigh, she took a large piece from the box and passed it on. She would save it for after class...

She nodded as they moved onto the Protego spell, but other students had already answered and she didn't want to be repetitive.

Anna smiled as the fudge finally came around to her. She took a piece and sat back and enjoyed it.

Wednesday raised her hand again and answered, "Protego is a shield charm." She took some fudge, when it came to her. She wasn't in the mood for sweets, but bit into it anyway, just to be polite.

"Good, Anna... five for Gryffindor. Protego is a shield charm, and it will reflect spells of equal or lesser strength away from you. It won't block the really nasty ones, but it could still save your life." She smiled at them all. "I'd like to talk about binding charms today, but first... did everyone get some chocolate?"

Joseph smiled taking a piece of fudge. He was enjying this class even more than he thought it would. His had went up, "As you showed in the last class, Protego blocks an opposing spell but I don't believe it sends the spell back. It will just absorb the spell and stop it from striking it's target." Joseph looked to the professor wondering if his answer was sufficient.

[Anna Banana]

"Yes, ma'am. I've just received a piece. It was very tasty. Thank you!" Anna replied.

[Waddles]

Juniper jotted down some notes on exactly what Protego did. She had not gotten any chocolate, but there was no way she was about to say that. She did not mind not getting chocolate.

Daphne answered a muffled "Yes", as she popped a piece of the fudge into her mouth. Very good, she thought to herself. She passed the fudge along to another student.

Amelia nodded as the Professor asked if they all got chocolate and thought about the topic for today. "Er Professor Rae, do you mean charms such as incarcerous or are you talking about a curse like petrificus totalis, which is a full body-bind?" She bit her lower lip, hoping she wasn't jumping too far ahead.

"Yes professor." Alex said as she popped the choclate in her mouth, usually she wasn't a big fan of sweets but today she had been craving for chocolate. She continued on her notes, making sure she didn't miss a thing.

She nodded, silently, to Professor Rae's question and saved her chocolate in her pocket. Wednesday wasn't in the mood for chocolate because she, recently, had the flu. Ever since she got better, she didn't crave for sweets, much.

"I mean... any charm that binds, really," Rae said thoughtfully, "but that's a good place to start. There are a variety of spells that serve essentially the same function... they bind a person. What do you suppose that I mean by 'bind'?"

[Anna Banana]

"Bind...meaning to make it to where a person can either only partially move or not move at all. Binding your body parts together so that they no longer move the way they should," Anna replied.

[Angie]

"Yes Professor!" Willow said nodding at once, with a grin. Chocolate put her on a good mood, so it was a good thing that she had chocolate during DADA. It'll help her to concentrate.

Lemon cookies are still better though..

"Well, if someone someone get 'bind' that person can't really move.." She said more to herself than to anyone else. She was a little distracted; All because of the chocolate. Chocolate was distracting!

Juniper raised her hand. "Bind, as in stick together? Like the binding of a book, or... like glue sticks stuff together. So you can't move," she said.

Joseph raised his hand, "Binding is the act of stopping somebody from moving. Binding can be related to any limb." He was very sure about his answer.

"Well, by bind, I would think that you would mean to bound a person so they could not move, whether this be via their own body parts or an external object, it essentially makes no difference," Amelia said, somewhat nervously.

"Isn't binding like paralyzing?" Wednesday asked, raising her hand.

"Oh, very good," she nodded at each student. "Anna gave a very good answer... it makes a person so that they can only move partially or not at all. It restricts their movement. Five to Gryffindor. What do you suppose the GOAL would be in casting such a spell? Why would it be useful in a duel?"

"Because it wouldn't allow your opponent to attack you" Willow said

[Anna Banana]

Anna thought on that for a minute. "Would it be to cause the opponent to not be able to cast anything else at you? It would make it to where you were open to do...whatever...while they were pretty much helpless," Anna replied.

Joseph again raised his hand, "It would restrict the opponent from casting any spells using wand movements."

[Waddles]

Juniper raised her hand. "The goal would probably be to incapacitate your opponent, so they can't attack you. You could use it either to buy yourself time to think, or, I suppose, to try to get away if you knew your opponent was loads better than you," she said.

"It might be useful if you are not strong enough or ready to kill, but this way the charm would allow you more time to either get away or call for more help," Amelia said.

[LeapFrog]

Daphne raised her hand. "It would prevent them from casting a spell and using their wand. You gain control over the duel." she answered.

"Even if it doesn't stop them from casting a spell, maybe it could slow them, or distract them enough for you to cast first." Saylie suggested.

Alexis rasied her had "if your opponent is bound, they wont be able to do much to hurt you."

"Good... I'm glad that we're looking at this from the larger perspective. It isn't just that you can attack an opponent who can't fight back, but you can apprehend or end the fight at that point. You can stop things from escalating at that point." She smiled at them all. "Now, let's start to think about those binding charms. Here's a little quiz. What is the charm that causes ropes to come from your wand?"

"Incarcerous," Anna replied.

Joseph wracked his brain, he couldn't think of what it was at all. He knew it started with an 'I', and ended with a 'rous' but that was about it.

Curt looked over to the young Gryffindor girl who was basically a textbook and sighed, the charm was the incarcerous spell alright. And Curt was rather good at it. Once the fudge came buy, Curt broke a piece of it off and started nibbling on it, starting at his blank parchment.

"Incarcerous, I believe Professor" Willow answere, with her hand in the air

"Incarcerous," Amelia said.

"Good, Anna... Incarcerous causes ropes to bind your opponent. It's actully my FAVORITE spell, which is why it's first. Five for Gryffindor. Let's move on to the next spell. Which spell causes the body to go completely stiff and immobile?"

[Anna Banana]

"Petrificus Totalus," Anna explained again.

[Waddles]

Juniper raised her hand. "Petrificus totalus," she said.

"The spell is Petrificus Totallus, I think." he said with a shrug, there were other body binders as well.

"Petrificus totalus." Xana said softly.

Willow was about to open her mouth to say the answer when she realized that there were enough people replying to professor Rae's question, so she merely sat there, and took notes. She was not looking forward for the practical session. Hopefully they'll remain taking notes, and answering questions.

"Yeah," Anna replied, agreeing with the Slytherin. "Duro turns and object to stone. Impedimenta...wouldn't that work, too?"

Juniper looked at the Gryffindor girl in confusion. "I thought impedimenta slows things down, or stops them. That wouldn't make it a binding spell, would it?" she protested quietly. She was wary of pointing this out in case she was wrong. That would be very embarassing indeed.

"You're right, Petrificus Totalus is the spell I was referring to. You're getting ahead of me, but it's a good point to bring up... there are a variety of spells that function in similar ways but are not the same. Incarcerous and Petrificus Totalus both keep you from moving, but the first ties you up and the second paralyzes you. Fundamentally different spells. Let's also be clear on this... Duro is intended to be used on objects, not on people. I couldn't say for certain if someone would die as they were turned to stone, but it wouldn't be pretty. But let's move on to Impedimenta... what does it do?"

Juniper raised her hand. "Impedimenta slows things down, or stops them," she said

Juniper looked at the Gryffindor girl in confusion. "I thought impedimenta slows things down, or stops them. That wouldn't make it a binding spell, would it?" she protested quietly. She was wary of pointing this out in case she was wrong. That would be very embarassing indeed.

"Well," she said to the girl, you're right, but according to the textbook, binding is one way Impedimenta can slow, or impede, someone. Anna reached over and pointed out a portion of the book. So I think we're both right, in some way," Anna said, smiling to the girl in a good-natured way. While Anna was discussing this with her fellow student, she was also directing her answer to the professor, who had just asked about the spell.

Description: This hex is capable of tripping, freezing, binding, knocking back and generally impeding the target's progress towards the caster. The extent to which the spell's specific action can be controlled by the caster is not made clear. If this spell does bind it does eventually wear off.

Again, Willow was about to answer the question, but she stopped herself when she heard someone else answering first. It was Juniper 'Nature-freak' Goodwin.

"Very nice answer, Juniper. Impedimenta can slow the opponent down to nearly stopping, and a truly powerful one can stop you dead in your tracks. It's much like moving through molasses, however unpleasant that would be."

Rhiannon had been paying attention to what had been going on in class, but, upon looking down at her notes, she found more sketches on the page than notes. It's a good thing that I've heard of these spells, she thought. Looking up at the professor, she waited to see what she was going to talk about next.

Laylee was writing notes, happy that all of these spells were being explained. She wondered if they would be trying out these spells on each other. Laylee would enjoy that. She could use these spells on a certain boy who wouldn't leave her alone...
"What if the person we are trying to bind or stop, reverses the spell on us;" Laylee couldnt remember the name of that particular spell at the moment. "how would we free ourselves from it?" She asked. She hoped she wasn't asking a stupid question...

Hitachi scratched his chin and let everything he saw, and heard sink in. He was dying to answer some questions that he was beat to.

Xana took notes about the Duro charm, now completely curious to know what it would be like in practice... not enough to try it, though... as the professor said it would not be pretty.

She was hungry and even contemplated taking a piece of the professor's fudge as it came around, but decided that would just make things worse... besides, she usually didn't like very sweet chocolates like fudge, preferring dark , bittersweet chocolate. Hopefully, the lesson would end relatively soon so she could get something to eat.

Emma scribbled notes on her piece of parchment, trying to keep up. As she progressed through her first year, she was ecstatic at the fact that classes were becoming easier. Silence continued to fill the room as Emma patiently waited for the teacher to resume.

Tori took notes with one hand and with the other she rested her head on. She frowned as she looked down at the parcement thinking of how horible her handwriting was.

Jotting some notes down with a quill about staying away from Duro, Claudian eyed the chocolate confection as it came around. He reached his hand for one, but actually grabbed two, popping one into his mouth, letting it melt away and slipping the other into his bag for later consumption.

Kayla wrote down the notes on her parchment and looked up as the basket of chocolate came around. She raised her eyebrows at Claudian as she watched him eat one chocolate and pocket another one. 'I saw that' she mouthed as she took the basket from him and retrieved a chocolate for herself and passed the basket to the next person.

[Edward Penguin]

"gah!" Finn thought. He hated writing notes and it's not like he actually used them later. It might make him a better wizard if he did, but he didn't.

He looked down on the parchment and was horrified at the endless stream of doodles he saw on there. He had drawn a picture of each house mascot. The slytherin one was quite frightening and the badger was funny. He tried to refocus on the lesson.

[Flipper]

Eva was writing it down. Not that she understood it very well, but... work is work.

She search for something in her bag. A pencil? What do I need this for? Weird things that we put in a bag... Eva took out what she had found.
She took a piece of paper and her quill, and started to write some questions about the class subject.

"So we've covered Incarcerous, Petrificus Totalus, and Impedimenta, and we haven't even run through all the spells yet. What is another spell that functions to stun someone?"

[Waddles]

Juniper raised her hand cautiously. "Stupefy," she said.

[Nightingale]

Regina raised her hand assured in her answer. "Stupefy," she stated, her Russian accent showing barely at all. She then sat back and munched her delicious fudge. I'll have to get some of this for myself, she thought to herself.

[Cassirin]

"Excellent, Juniper. Five for Ravenclaw. What does Stupefy do?"

"It makes the target unconscious" Austin said.

[Angie]

"Renders the target of the spell unconscious" Willow said with the hand in the air. "this spell hurls a bolt of red light" She added

Ems raised her hand "It stuns your opponent - Knocks them out."

Regina raised her hand halfway, as she was unsure of the answer, and quietly said, "Knocks them out?" She couldn't think of the words she would use to say what she wanted to say.

Rhiannon listened to the other students answer the professor's questions. Stupefy did make the target unconscious, butit seemed like it did so much more. Raising her hand, she asks,"Do you always have to use the counterspell to return to consciousness after being hit by Stupefy? Because I would think that if you were simply unconscious, you might regain consciousness on your own." She was curious, since every time she'd seen Stupefy used, the target had to have "rennervate" cast before they woke up.

[Cassirin]

"Five for Ravenclaw. Good job, Austin. Stupefy will rend your opponent unconscious. And that's an excellent question Rhiannon," Rae sat back on the edge of her desk to consider it. "In their own time, someone could awake from a stupefy, based on the fact that it's simply unconsciousness, but it is much quicker to use 'ennervate'. ARe there any other spell that will make your opponent unable to fight back?"

[Waddles]

Juniper raised her hand. "Well, 'silencio' might work if your opponent can't do spells without speaking," she said.

[Angie]

"Sectusempra, professor?" Willow asked tentatively

Ems raised her hand, "Langlock... or Petrificus Totalus maybe?"

[SweetAussie]

Agie raised her hand. "Well you could use a full body bind curse, like Petrificus Totalus. Obviously your opponent wont be able to fight back because they cant move" Agie giggled.

[Mell]

Kayla raised her hand. "Expelliarmus, the disarming spell" she said. "But then they could always use their fists or throw something at you, if they're quick enough."

[PhoenixRising]

Amelia bit her lip slowly, listening as many students listed off Petrificus Totalis, which was not another spell since it had already been mentioned. There were a few new spells though. She raised her hand, "What about the Bat Bogey Hex, Jelly Legs Jinx, Trip Jinx, Sponge-Knees Curse, or Locomotor Mortis?" she suggested.

[Nightingale]

Regina ticked off the spells they had listed on her already in her head. When she thought of another, she volunteered, "Incendio?"

[SilverTiger]

Rhiannon contemplated the Professor's answer to her question. I guess . . ., she thought. She added it to her notes and then listened as people tried naming off other spells. Raising her hand again, she said, "A Confundus charm could make them unable to fight back. Since they'd have to think or do whatever you wanted them to. Or Rictusempra"

[Cassirin]

"Both langlock and silencio are in the spirit of what we're learning, and we're already learned expelliarmus and petrificus totalus," Rae smiled at them. "And I will absolutely expel anyone who uses Sectumsempra at this school."

"So... what is the difference between Petrificus Totalus and Stupefy?"

[Mell]

"Stupefy knocks your opponent totally unconscious, while Pertrifus Totalus binds your body so that you can't move but you are still awake" Kayla said with her hand raised.

[PhoenixRising]

"Petrificus Totalis binds your body together, so that your muscles can't move, like a rigid board," Amelia started. "While Stupefy is a stunning spell so that when it hits you, it affects more your brain and causes you to lose consciousness."

[SweetAussie]

Agie raised her hand." Petrificus Totalus binds the person, but the are still conscious...they just cannot move. Stupefy on the other hand knocks the person out/"

Rhiannon sighed as several students offered an answer to the professor's next question. She was now making a list of possible spells in the margin of her notes. She was never sure when the knowledge might come in necessary, especially since Josh seemed to like challenging her to duels. But she put a huge star next to "sectumsempra" and wrote "definitely do not do" in large letters.

[Nightingale]

The corners of Regina's mouth twitched slightly as the headmistress stressed the importance of the misuse of the spell, "Sectumsempra". She recalled that fateful day at Durmstrang when she had witnessed it. But that was beside the point. She held her quill at the ready to take notes on the difference between Stupefy and Petrificus Totalus.

[Cassirin]

"Good, Kayla. Five for Hufflepuff. I want you all to be aware of the differences between each of these spells, because they each do something unique to your opponent's body. Please make sure your notes make those differences clear. I'd like to teach you something special, a spell I've been working on for quite a while now. It functions much as these others do. Put away your quills and get your wands ready."

[Nightingale]

Regina eagerly tucked her notes, quill, and ink into her black leather bag and pulled her wand out of it's place holding her hair upon her head. As she did so, her soft brown curls fell willy-nilly about her shoulders. Irritated, she brushed them out of her face and prepared to learn this new spell.

[Mell]

Kayla put her quill back in her bag and took out her wand and then looked at the Professor eagerly.

[Waddles]

Juniper quickly covered the page with her scrawling notes. She then put her parchment and quill away and took her wand out of her pocket, trying very hard to avoid looking as scared as she felt.

[FoxFire]

Oooh something practical. Gwen put away her notes and drew her wand. She didn't know why she was excited, because she was awful at dueling, but it was always fun to get up and move.

[Raquelin.]

Ellie started taking notes, she didn't really enjoyed to do it.
Then she heard the professor saying something about "get your wands ready", and she smiled.
That was better.

[SilverTiger]

Rhiannon slipped her notes into her bag and pulled her wand out. A new spell, she thought. Cool. She decided to file it away among her other spell knowledge, thinking again about dueling Josh. She hadn't seen him in class, or if he was, he wasn't paying attention. So it'd be ammunition.

[PhoenixRising]

Amelia gave a knowing grin towards the second year, for earning some points. She then placed her quill and notebook in her messenger bag, excited to be beginning the practical portion of the lesson. Placing her wand neatly in front of her on her desk, she looked up at the Professor attentively and waited for the instructions.

[Angie]

At this point, the Ravenclaw gulped. Taking notes, replying to questions and study like crazy were her things, not Practical classes of DADA. Regardless, she put away everything, took a deep breath, put her wand out and waited for more instructions, as she bit her down lip.

[iHermione Granger]

Excited that she would be using her wand Tori huriddley put away her notes and pulled her wand out of her pocket.

[Cassirin]

"There are some similarities between this spell and Impedimenta, although my spell localizes the charm so it only affects one area of the body. Lentesco, the Gluing spell, acts as a bonding agent on wherever you cast it. If you cast it at their feet, their feet will stick to the floor as if glued there. If you cast it at their hand, they won't be able to let go of their wand, but they also may not be able to lift it from their side if it was touching their body. Can you see how this might be useful?"

[Mell]

Kayla raised her hand. "You are disabiling their movements by glueing their body parts either together or to objects."

[Nightingale]

Regina marveled at the ingenuity of her professor. This was history in the making and she was witnessing it right here. "Of course. You could even 'glue' a person to a wall, keeping them still." Such clever staff they have here at Hogwarts...

[Cassirin]

"Good. The casting is a sweep from your non-wand side in a straight line to your wand side. Keep it in parallel to the floor," Rae demonstrated with her wand. "Would you like to see it demonstrated, or do you just want to go ahead and try casting?"

[Mell]

"I would like to see it demonstrated, I can be your guinea pig if you like" Kayla said with a chuckle.

[Nightingale]

Regina quickly weighed the pros and cons of each choice and said, "Perhaps a demonstration is in order." She was looking forward to seeing this.

[Cassirin]

"Good, Kayla. Hop on up here, and I'll stick you with a little Lentesco." Rae laughed and gestured for Kayla to join her.

[Nightingale]

Regina smiled at the young student's willingness to volunteer. She made sure to keep her eyes and ears open for every bit of this new spell.

[Mell]

Kayla rose out of her seat and walked to the front of the class where Professor Rae stood. "Okay ready when you are...uh it doesn't hurt does it?" she asked a little nervously. Standing in front of the Professor with her wand pointing at her was a little intimidating to say the least.

[Raquelin.]

Ellie heard a girl volunteering to be stick with a little Lentesco.
She turned her eyes from her quill to the girl and noticed that was Kayla.
"Hopefully this time she will not do anything wrong.."
After that thought she keep her eyes to the professor, she was curious about that spell

[Cassirin]

"The twins didn't even cry when I glued them together," Rae said with a chuckle. "So I'd say no. I'm going to aim it at your feet to demonstrate a lack of mobility." She swept the wand across her body, shouting, "Lentesco" as soon as she reached her wand side. A bolt of pale blue light shot toward Kayla's feet.

[Nightingale]

Regina began making mental notes left and right. Sweeping motion, Lentesco, pale blue light, she thought to herself. This was amazing. She could hardly contain her anticipation to try the spell herself.

[Mell]

Kayla watched as blue light flashed from the Professor's wand and to her relief she didn't feel a thing and she let out a breath that she didn't realise she had been holding. Kayla tried to lift her right foot from the floor but found that she couldn't...what did find though was that it caused her to become all wobbly and she tried to regain her balance but she fell to the floor with her feet still stuck firmly to the ground. "I guess it works" she said.

[Cassirin]

"Oh, dear," she chuckled and called, "Finite Incantatem. Alright, that was very good, Kayla. Thank you for volunteering. Do you all feel ready to try out these spells?"

[Nightingale]

Regina nodded vehmently at this suggestion, and held her wand ready.

[Mell]

"Thank you Professor" Kayla said as she got back to her feet and was relieved to find that they could move again. "Yes I think I'm ready to try it."

[Raquelin.]

Ellie nodded while she helded her wand. That was an interesting spell and she would like to try it.

[noodles]

Ems rolled her eyes... she couldn't help it - that Kayla was such an attention seeker. She nodded her head as the Professor asked if they were ready to try out the spell. It certainly looked effective.

[Cassirin]

"I'd like you to find a partner and try the following spells: Incarcerous, Impedimenta, Petrificus Totalus, Stupefy, and Lentesco. Be careful and I'll walk among you as you practice."

[Mell]

Kayla looked around the classroom to find a partner, she didn't see anyone she knew except Ellie and Emily and she wasn't going there, goodness knows what would happen if they got together.

[Nightingale]

Regina glanced around for someone to partner with. She walked up to the young volunteer, Kayla. "Hello, I'm Regina. Would you like to be my partner?" she asked as polietly as possible.

[Waddles]

Juniper looked around. The only person in the class that she knew was anti-nature girl. Perhaps Willow would be her partner. It was not an ideal situation, but it was acceptable. Juniper would rather partner up with someone she knew but did not particularly like than a stranger.

"Willow, will you be my partner?" Juniper asked quietly.

[Mell]

Regina glanced around for someone to partner with. She walked up to the young volunteer, Kayla. "Hello, I'm Regina. Would you like to be my partner?" she asked as polietly as possible.


Kayla looked at the older girl and smiled nervously. "Yeah sure...but take it easy on me won't you, you've got a few more years experience than I have" she said.

Ems looked over at Ellie and grinned, "Wanna partner up?" she asked. Ems had never had the priviledge of practicing spells with Ellie before. It could be interesting.

[Nightingale]

Kayla looked at the older girl and smiled nervously. "Yeah sure...but take it easy on me won't you, you've got a few more years experience than I have" she said.

Regina smiled down on her, but not in a condescending way. Merely because she was a few inches taller. As her mother had once said, "Be kind to those younger than you. They are our future."

"Why don't we try Incarcerous first?" she suggested and spaced herself a few feet from the second year. "You first," she said, smiling.

Ellie looked around, she knew the some of the people that where in that room, but Kayla wasn't an option.
Ellie would ended up in the hospital, for sure.
Willow seemed to have a partner, the next person she noticed was Emily.
She grinned at her friend and asked "Do you want to be my partner Em?"

Ellie grinned at Emily, that was going to be interesting. “Of course I want to Em.”She couldn't find anyone better.

Regina wobbled a bit as the ropes flew from Kayla's wand and bound her all the way down to her feet. She waited patiently, keeping her balance meticulously, as the young student broke the charm. "Fantastic," she said, a musical essence to her voice.

Next, she stood at a ready stance and pointed her wand at the young Hufflepuff. "Incacerous," she shouted and as soon as she saw that she had successfully completed the spell, said, "Finite Incantatem. Shall we try Impedimenta next?"

[Mell]

Regina's frolking stroll was cut short by Kayla's spell, and she had to catch herself on the desk to prevent herself from tumbling to the ground in a heap. "Nice cast," she said gleefully. "What's next, Petrificus Totalus? It's your turn to go first. Hit me with your best shot."

Ellie held her wand, with a grin emily seemed to be pretty excited .That was going to be interesting.
"Is Petrificus Totalus a good one ?" she asked to the girl "I can start if you want to Em" she told her with a shrug.
“That’s fine.” Emily said with a nod. “Are we not supposed to block? Just allow the spell to hit us?” She asked as she watched Kayla and Regina. This was going to be hard.. to resist the urge to block and cast back.. a reflex action so to speak. “Alright Bluebell. Do your stuff.” Ems said with an encouraging smile towards her friend. She gripped her wand tightly as she looked at Ellie.

“That’s fine.” Emily said with a nod. “Are we not supposed to block? Just allow the spell to hit us?” She asked as she watched Kayla and Regina. "Alright" She said sternly, before taking out her wand. "We are supposed to practice the spells between each other, so you can't block my spell" Willow explained. She was almost sure that Juniper had no idea what a protective spell, was in any case. The girl was a firstie after all.

"Impedimenta!" She said confidently, pointing at Juniper. Hopefully the spell would work.

"Stuepfy" she said but her voice came out a little wobbly and she could tell the spell hadn't been strong enough...Regina was still on her feet and quite awake. Kayla took a deep breath and concentrated on what she was supposed to be doing, she raised her wand again and spoke in a loud clear voice. "Stupefy."

Ellie bit her lower lip and shrugged “I don’t know Em. Well, our tendency is always to block..”

For Merlins’s sake ‘Do not block.’ She deliberately dropped her wand on the floor and allowed the spell to hit her. The moment it did hit, Ems wished she’d blocked it. She HATED this spell so much. She felt her limbs become rigid and she toppled over backwards. It was times like this that she wished she’d mastered non verbal spells. ‘Gah!’ Her eyes rested on Ellie, asking her to cast the counter spell.

[Nightingale]

Regina stood still, as she could tell Kayla was a mite unsure. She held her breath and nothing happened. The second time, she wasn't ready, and the spell hit her with full force. She toppled to the ground, her elbow bumping the edge of a chair on the way down.

[Mell]

Regina stood still, as she could tell Kayla was a mite unsure. She held her breath and nothing happened. The second time, she wasn't ready, and the spell hit her with full force. She toppled to the ground, her elbow bumping the edge of a chair on the way down.

"I'm so sorry" Kayla said apologetically. "Are you okay?" she heard her elbow hit the chair and it sounded as though it would be quite painful. Kayla stood back up and placed the cushion behind her and faced Regina, she gulped she had never been stunned before either. "Okay I'm ready" she whispered fearfully, not knowing what to expect.

Emily’s eyes widened slightly as she saw the spell coming towards her. She gripped her wand tightly telling herself NOT to block! For Merlins’s sake ‘Do not block.’ She deliberately dropped her wand on the floor and allowed the spell to hit her. The moment it did hit, Ems wished she’d blocked it. She HATED this spell so much. She felt her limbs become rigid and she toppled over backwards. It was times like this that she wished she’d mastered non verbal spells. ‘Gah!’ Her eyes rested on Ellie, asking her to cast the counter spell.

Ellie was still with her wand in Emilys direction when she saw her friend toppled over backwards. It must had been pretty hard for her to drop her wand.
Ellie couldn’t imagine herself doing that.
But maybe she would have to do it.

She blinked for a while, she had actually hit Emily with a Petrificus Totalus spell.
Still observing the girl, she quickly remembered that she was under a spell and point her wand to her friend, again , and said calmly but firmly . “Finite Incantatem”

“Was it that bad?” she asked while she observed Emily.

"Don't worry, I won't block it," Juniper said sarcastically. She did not even know how to block a spell. When Willow cast the spell, she expected it to hit. She waited...and waited. Finally, she realized that nothing was going to happen.

"Um... nothing happened, Willow," Juniper said nervously. She hoped the second year would not get too angry. "Do you want to do it again or can I have a try?" Hopefully Juniper would get a try. Then anti-nature girl Willow could repeat the spell.

Not missing the sarcasm on Nature Freak, Willow's lips curled into a smirk. She was well aware that smirking to people was not a polite or right thing to do, but she was not in the mood to deal with Juniper's weird demeanor. It would be a complete waste of time.

Juniper's eyes widened as she saw the effect her spell had on Willow. She had actually cast the spell! She tried not to grin too widely as she ducked her head. "Go ahead with the next spell now, Willow," she said.

Whatever the next spell was. Juniper braced herself for Willow's spell, half-hoping that her fellow Ravenclaw would do it right, and half-hoping that she wouldn't.

Rhiannon sighed. Once more she had zoned out after the demonstration and didn't have a partner. Oh well, she thought. Mentally going over the new spell in her mind, she watched the students who had partnered up, casting spells on each other.

Alexis noticed the Ravenclaw didn't have a partner either so she walked up to the girl "Hi I'm Alexis, would you like to be my partner?"

Rhiannon turned as she was addressed by another student. "You're not afraid to go up against someone older than you?", she asked. The girl looked to be a first year. "I mean, sure. I'm Rhiannon. Nice to meet you, Alexis."

" I've got to learn somehow" Alexis said a little more nervously then she had meant too "it's nice to meet you as well. Shell we start?"

Rhiannon could tell Alexis was a little nervous, so decided to be easy on the girl. "We can start any time. Do you want to go first?"

Alexis took a deep breath and got her wand out and was surprised to see her hand wasn't shaking yet " Okay I'll go first." Alexis smiled weakly at Rhiannona she raised her wand and said "Incarcerous" she waited to see if the spell had worked.

Kate walked around for a bit first,watching everyone else cast their spells.She'd been to a duelling claas,but it was a charms class,not a DADA class.She was slightly nervous,but she didnt show it.She was quite good at hiding her emotions.She watched a Hufflepuff girl and a Ravenclaw girl start.

Rhiannon thought about letting the spell hit, but at the last second stepped to the side, and the ropes conjured just missed her. "Good one," she called out to Alexis. Waving her wand, she says, "Incarcerous," returning the same spell.

Alexis was please the spell had worked, even if they didn't hit Rhiannon. Alexis heard Rhiannon say they same spell but was not quick enough and the roped bound her were she stood, while she waited to be untied she congratulated Rhiannon on a good hit.

Rhiannon waved her wand again, saying "Finite." As the ropes fell away from Alexis, she smiled. "I've had a bit more practice than you on some spells." She stepped back to let the younger girl try again.

"More like on all spells" Alexis said as she raised her wand pointing it right at Rhiannon "Impedimenta" she yelled

Rhiannon tilted her head. What's it feel like to get hit by this?, she wondered. Stepping to the side, she lets it hit her arm, feeling the spell try to hold her back. Luckily, it wasn't her wand arm. Pointing her wand at her other arm, she says, "Finite."

Turning back to Alexis, she casts the spell back at her. "Impedimenta!"

Alexis rasied her wand and yelled "Protego" the sheild charm had worked, Rhiannon might want to know what Impedimenta felt like but Alexis didnt.

Rhiannon quickly followed her last spell with another. "Petrificus Totalus!" She was happy that the first year had been able to conjure a shield, but still wanted to continue with the assignment. And since Alexis hadn't cast anything other than the shield, she took it upon herself to keep it going.

Alexis was able to doge the full body bind curse only by tripping over her shoelace, she quickly got her self back up and tied her shoelace very tight once that was done she pointed her wand at Rhiannon while saying "Petrificus Totalus"

Rhiannon waved her wand quickly. "Protego!" The Shield charm blocked the body-bind curse as she followed up with "Stupefy." She was starting to get in the swing of things, and her movements were getting faster.

Alexis was just too slow she was hit with Rhiannon's curse, she lay on the floor of the classroom unconscious.

“Alright. My turn.” Ems said calmly as she picked up her wand from the floor. “Same again… and then we’ll move on to the other spells… Petrificus Totalus!” She said with a swish and a flick, pointing her wand in Ellie’s direction.

“Incarcerous it is.” She said while she noticed Emily placing her wand on the floor and gave a small laugh. Emily could be incredibly funny sometimes.
“Here it goes Emily.” She wouldn’t dare to call Greenwood to Emily, she knew that Emily would be mad at her. She usually called her Em, so Emily would fit well.
She firmly pointed her want in Emilys direction and said confidently with a half-smile “Incarcerous!” and watched as ropes flew from her wand.

"Excellent lesson," Rae clapped her hands. "If you could put your wands away..." She waited a moment. "For homework, I'd like you each to write 6 inches of parchment. I want you to choose three of these spells to try to master. Tell me how they are alike and different, and tell me how you are progressing on each one. Remember, the spells are Incarcerous, Impedimenta, Petrificus Totalus, Stupefy, and Lentesco. This is also a good opportunity to practice your Protego and Finite Incantatem, especially if you are working with a partner. The parchment is due by March 14th, midnight EST."

Rhiannon's eyes widened as her spell hit Alexis shortly before the professor said class was over. Looking apologetically at Professor Rae, she ran over to the younger girl and quietly said, "Ennervate." She hoped the Hufflepuff woke up soon, so she could get the homework written down.

Alexis woke up a little groggy and thanked Rhiannon for the training, before copying down the homework for the week.

Rhiannon let out a sigh of relief as Alexis regained consciousness. Smiling at the girl as she thanks her, she responds with a quick "You're welcome." She was still not entirely used to her spells actually hitting anyone, so her heart was racing.

Returning to her seat, and rummaging in her bag, she quickly writes down the homework and then looks around, taking a couple of deep breaths.
