Joint Lesson: Dueling Arena

Cassandra left a sign on the door to her classroom directing children down the hall to the Dueling Arena. Once inside, she drew her wand and cleaned the room a bit, a broad smile on her face. This was going to be... quite fun.

Dia grinned widely. "Good day, professor." she nodded. "Was your summer was enjoyable?"

Cassandra entered and stood in the back of the room. She was happy this was her first class.

Derek arrived in the dueling arena."Hello Professor How are the twins?",the Slytherin negro boy said.

Xana entered the classroom and smiled at the professor. "Good day, professor! I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer."

She smiled at Diabolica and ignored Trelawney. "Hey, Dia. " she grinned, joining her.

Doyle stepped into the room after a few students. He looked around, approvingly, before striding over to his wife. He gave her a quick brush of lips to her cheek while there weren't many students around. Then, he straightened up. "Good afternoon, Professor Rae," he smiled.

Gwen ran into the classroom, stopping short and breathing heavily at the doorway.

"Hi, Professor," she said breathlessly. "On time to my first class of the term!" She did a little dance and took a spot near the window.

Expecting to scope out competition, Curt walked into the dueling arena with a confident air, only to have that automatically zapped once he spotted the Headmistress. Curt walked over to her and smiled, this was quite the pleasant surprise and it seemed that she was giving a lesson, this was going to be too great. Being in the presence of a great witch like her in class was usually more than enough, the setting of the dueling arena added a little more kick to it.

"G'day Professor Rae!" Curt said happily, and slightly tensely as he knew they were about to practice dueling. "You going to show us a trick or two?" Curt said with a playful wink, as he knew that she would absolutely teach them more than a trick or two as she was the master of her art.

Kayla walked into the classroon and smiled this was her favourite class my far. "Good afternoon Professor" she said as she walked passed.

Ellie walked into the classroom with a smile on her face." Hello Professor" she said looking at the professor then stood in back of the classroom near to the window..

When stepped into the room. She'd knotted her hair at the back of her head on the way to the classroom. Anything in the Dueling Arena kind of implied that she might want her hair waaaaaay out of the way. She dropped her bag in a corner with the thick clunk of the potions book inside it.

Xana entered the classroom and smiled at the professor. "Good day, professor! I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer."

She smiled at Diabolica and ignored Trelawney. "Hey, Dia. " she grinned, joining her.

Dia grinned back at her friend. "Why, hello, Xana."

Hitachi stepped into the classroom. There she saw quite a lot of people. "Good day to you Professor!" Hitachi said joyfully. Hitachi then sat down on a desk next to a person staring out the window.

Apedemak’s long precise feline strides carried him past the threshold of the Dueling Arena. His golden eyes darted warily of the room settling for a brief moment on each of the faces present. Clasping his hands firmly behind his back he patiently waits for the class to begin.

Marco bounced into the duelling arena. He spotted Doyle, "Hey Professor Branxton. Thank you for your appearence in the Leaky Cauldron, you startled the boy into behaving."

Ari trudged into the DADA room, prepared to be humiliated as she always was during this class. It was not her favorite but she needed the grade. Sighing, she plastered a small smile on her face and nodded to professor Rae as she crossed the threshold and turned to look around.

Wondering why it was in the Dueling arena she shrugged and sighed. She spotted Curt and waved politely as she stopped, turning to stand and wait for her nightmare to begin. Taking a deep breath she watched and waited.

Kerry walked into the room. "Hmm. the dueling arena. This should be fun," she smirked as she entered. "Hello Professor, looks like this will be a fun lesson." she smiled as she walked past.

Finding a spot along a side wall, Kerry reached into her robe pocket and felt for her wand. She took it out and began twirling it between her fingers gently, as she waited for class to begin.

Walking into the room with Savannah, Alexis looked around. Good they weren't late. She turned to Savannah. "This will be good practice for us when we duel each other." She said with a grin. She hoped that they learned a lot of tricks.

"Good day to YOU, Professor Branxton," she smiled broadly at him before turning back to the class at large. They were bright and eager, and she rocked on her feet like a little girl as she waited for them to file in. "Books away, wands out, and find a seat on a cushion somewhere around the room," she practically sang.

Aiden walked into the classroom. This would be his first ever Hogwarts class. He was excited, but nervous as well. Hopefully, he would be able to answer a question or two. After setting his books down on a desk in the second row, Aiden slipped into the seat. Then, he stood up again.

After a moment, the small boy sat down again. He couldn't decide what to do with himself. Aiden didn't know any of the other students in the room, and he didn't want to get into trouble by talking. But he felt silly just sitting there. Quietness wasn't really the Gryffindor's strong suit. But he was anxious, so it came a bit more easily.

More than anything, Aiden Everett wished his pet prairie dog was with him. Over the last couple of weeks, Minkus and Aiden had developed a strong bond. Without MinkyPinky, the boy felt slightly lost. He would have to learn to manage alone.

Still not really sure what to do with himself, Aiden caught the professor's eyes. It was the headmistress, he'd noticed. Honestly, she was the only teacher he could recognize by face at the time. Aiden hoped that would get easier with time. Something about the headmistress made Aiden feel less nervous about the whole situation. With a quiet, slightly high-pitched giggle, the kid waved to her.


Hearing the professor's instructions, the boy put away his book. He took out his short, whippy wand with too much eagerness. Wandwork was one thing he was very anxious to learn, despite the warnings his mother had given him. She seemed worried that he would accidentally cause many explosions. She could be right, but Aiden hoped not.

The boy then skipped over to one of the cushions and plopped down on one. For some reason, having his wand in his hand made most of his fears disappear.

Oh excellent Kayla thought as she pushed her bag against the wall and found a cushion to sit on.

Dia grinned back at her friend. "Why, hello, Xana."

She grinned. "Want to partner, if partnership is needed?"

Ellie walked into the classroom with a smile on her face." Hello Professor" she said looking at the professor then stood in back of the classroom near to the window..

Xana noticed Ellie enter the room and nodded a hello, smiling.

Alex walked into her first class, she was too exited to finally begin. She took a seat in the back of the room, this way she could see if any of her friends came in and they would see her right away.
She smiled up at the professor, not wanting to wait long before class began. She put her books beside her and pulled out her wand from the inside of her robes, just like the prfessor asked them to do.

Curt turned around and waved to Ariana as she walked in and smiled, and turned back to the Headmistress once she began to speak. Soaking his her works, Curt nodded and walked back to find a cushion, with his wand in hand. Curt spotted Alexis and Savannah walking in and went to go sit by them. "This is going to be great. I get a shot at Alexis when you're done Savannah." Curt said with a wink, he was was going to get Alexis back....somehow.

Still not really sure what to do with himself, Aiden caught the professor's eyes. It was the headmistress, he'd noticed. Honestly, she was the only teacher he could recognize by face at the time. Amelia was a bit taken back by Professor Rae's sing-song mood. She eyed Cassandra across the room, and sighed as she took a seat on a cushion. She motioned for Curt, one of the few Hufflepuffs there right now, to come sit with her.

"But of course." Dia smiled, taking a seat on a cushion. "And partnership will most likely be needed."

Professor Branxton grinned as he stood next to and a little behind Cassandra. She'd take charge of the class as the ranking professor but, it was going to be an incredible experience working with her to shape young minds.

The fourth year was of course, right at Alexis' side the whole time. Quickly tying her dark hair up in a tight ponytail, which nearly caused her to run right into her best friend but thankfully she stopped just before that. "Whoever said I agree'd to that duel?" She said, quietly back and shook her head.

Immediantly shifting her attention onto the two Professors, and did as told; Savannah took wand from the side pocket of her messenger bag and led the gryffidor over to two cushions. Just as Professor Rae had instructed. Smiling slightly, she nodded to Curt, not wanting to say anything outloud.

Curt watched as Amelia walked in and waved back, reaching for a pillow behind him and setting in next to him, Savannah, and Alexis. "Over here Amelia!" Curt said with a warm smile, quickly spinning his wand inbetween his fingers in anticipation.

Ari picked up her school bag and took out her wand, placing it behind her ear for safekeeping as she walked towards a cushion and sat down, eyeing those around her. If there was dueling involved she wanted to be careful with who she partnered with.

Kerry grabbed a cushion and took a seat on it, "Now this is more like it," she chuckled as she adjusted her robes and got more comfortable.

Kayla leaned over to Krissy. "This is going to be fun" she whispered.

Krissy leaned over to Kayla and whispered. "d'yeh suppose we're to duel one another?" Her eyes gleaming. Finally a chance to duel with wands instead of a staff.

"Good, good. I need you to stop chatting with each other and find your seats. I know how excited you are, and Professor Branxton and I intend to lead you in a rollicking good time. Now, I'll only ask one more time for you to take your seats and then I'll be forced to set someone on fire. And Mr. Denver can tell you... I'll actually do it."

Xana smiled to Apedemak, inclining her head gently to suggest that he join her and Diabolica.

She listened to Professor Rae-Branxton correct Marco and smirked in amusement, taking a seat on a nearby cushion as instructed.

A smile flickers across Apedemak lips and he glides over to the two young girls. He bows slightly to Diabolica and waist to be introduced.

Cassandra entered and stood in the back of the room. She was happy this was her first class.

Josh found a cushion next to cassandra as he took out his wand." Hey. You have any idea whats up?" he asked. At least he didnt get the pink cushion with hearts.

"Sure Curt. I'll just embarrass you more, but this time with my magic." Alexis whispered with a smile, then followed Savannah over to two cushions. "Don't worry you'll agree." She whispered smiply. She would make Vannah duel with her if she didn't want to. Not wanting to be set on fire Alexis shut up.

Hitachi looked at the boy who spoke to him. "Hello there! My name is Hitachi, what's yours?" Hitachi asked conversationally. Finally a person to talk to.

Jai walked in, this was surely embarassing, she had no partner and she stood by the wall looking in at all the dueling. She sighed and took out her wand, just flicking it around.

Hermy made her made over to a free cushion, wondering what this class was going to cover. She pulled her wand from her pocket, and held it loosely in her left hand.

Kerry grabbed a cushion and took a seat on it, "Now this is more like it," she chuckled as she adjusted her robes and got more comfortable.

Seeing Kerry from across the room, Anna smiled and headed on over to the same area. She took a seat, gave Kerry a brief smile, and settled in for her very first class ever.

Xana giggled softly at her commentary. The woman was a tour de force.

Apedemak turns away from Prefect Trelawney and strolls back towards the fire. “It would seem that I’ve missed you’re friend. My apologies Xana, I was distracted.” The laughter in his eyes suggest that the distraction was well worth it.

She smiled. "Oh, my apologies. Diabolica Black, this is Apedemak. Apedemak is a sixth year, and a new friend of mine... his father and Slade are actually friends as well. " she turned to Apedemak. "Diabolica is a seventh year and is far and away the best in DADA and dueling in the entire school. She's also my best friend." She smiled warmly at Diabolica.

Amelia nodded at Curt, and stood to follow his lead to join Vannah and Alexis. She didn't say a word though, because the last thing she wanted was to get in trouble by the Headmistress! She just sat silently on her orange cushion, waiting patiently for the next instructions. Although it was curious why the Charms Professor was there - but she would just have to wait to find out.

Heather hurried up and threw her self into a seat not wanting to be set on fire. She looked at Derek then smiled and then turned her attention back to the teacher.

Rhiannon walked into the room and found an open cushion. Taking a seat, she took her wand out of her bag and looked around at all the other students in the room. She saw Josh sitting by the Slytherin prefect, and Amelia over by some Hufflepuffs. Relaxing a little, since she now knew she was acquainted with some of the others in the room, she looked over at the professors, quickly braiding her blonde hair so it would be out of the way, wondering what they were going to learn.

Agie spotted her sister Kerry and bounced happily to a cushion next to her.

This was going to be fun.

Professor Branxton raised his wand which he'd retrieved from within the folds of his robes. "Perhaps you'll need to resort to the fire," he said in Cassandra's ear before setting off a bang. "I believe the headmistress asked you all to settle down."

"Good, good. I need you to stop chatting with each other and find your seats. I know how excited you are, and Professor Branxton and I intend to lead you in a rollicking good time. "No No more fire," Marco screamed, holding his head, running and jumping on a cushion, as far away from Rae as possible. He drew out his wand and kept an eye on her.

Dia smiled at Apedemak, bowing her head in greeting. "Pleasure to meet you, Apedemak. Are you enjoying your time here at Hogwarts?"

Heather laughed a little as Marco jumped in a coushin. She hurrildly ran next to him and sat in the one next to him. "Hey,"she said smiling.

Rhiannon jumped as one of the professors set off a loud bang. Looking around her with wide eyes from her position on a cushion, she saw several students scurry to unoccupied cushions. Making sure she looked like she was paying attention, she made sure she had a good grip on her wand and reapplied her attention to the professors.

"Diabolica Black. YOu and your friends need to sit down." She pointed her wand at them all. "Now... we have an exciting lesson today, but I will have to ask you to refrain from chatting with each other. Professor Branxton and I are here to discuss some of the connections between our two areas of expertise." She smiled broadly at them. "But before that, I'm going to deprive my daughters of any siblings by hexing him into submission."

Heather hurried up and threw her self into a seat not wanting to be set on fire. She looked at Derek then smiled and then turned her attention back to the teacher.

Derek smiled back at Heather.Then he saw Marco next to her.I told him to stay away since he hurt her once before.

Curt laughed out loud at the Headmistresses remark about taking out her husband. But raised himself for an even better look because this duel was surely going to be a great one. Curt took a deep breath, and continued to spin his wand inbetween his fingers rapidly.

"If you can," Doyle remarked with a slight bow. He moved to stand a bit further away so they would have more room for their little demonstration.

Jai made a small squeak sound and found herself, very quickly, a cushion to sit on. She put her wand in the leather holder at her side and waited. She didn't know what for but it seemed good. Knowing Jai she'd leave quickly or get stuck in the class and fight for her life.

"Ahhhh I feel the love in the air," Kerry laughed as she watched Professor Rae and Professor Braxton tease each other as they prepared to duel.

Ari sat quietly, removing her wand from behind her ear and watched Rae and Branxton with a quirked up eyebrow, wondering what this lesson could be about. When she heard Professor Rae speaking she raised herself up, catching every word. Charms and Defence together? Now ths should be interesting she thought with a small smile. At least she was good at one part of the class.

Heather laughed a little as Marco jumped in a coushin. She hurrildly ran next to him and sat in the one next to him. "Hey,"she said smiling.
Marco took his hands off his head, and noticed Heather sitting next to him, "Hey Heather," he smiled at her.

He watched the Branxtons. They were funny. He thought Doyle was amazing. And Rae, she was just crazy, and not likely to hit Doyle at all.

Cassandra bowed shortly and offered Doyle a wink. "I won't hurt you too badly, my love. Just remember that it's all in the name of education."

Saylie grinned at Professor Rae's comment about hexing him into submission. This lesson looked promising. She tucked her foot underneath her and watched the students scrambling for their seats.

Heather laughed as she watch her Professors tease each other. She smiled at Marco then turned her attention back to what was happening. I need to tell him not to listen to Derek but how, she thought.

"Diabolica Black. YOu and your friends need to sit down." She pointed her wand at them all. "Now... we have an exciting lesson today, but I will have to ask you to refrain from chatting with each other. Professor Branxton and I are here to discuss some of the connections between our two areas of expertise." She smiled broadly at them. Apedemak bows obediently to the Professor and in his normal unhurried manner finds a seat nearby.

"Of course," he smiled back and raised his wand in the traditional salute before assuming his duelling stance which actually wasn't much different from how he normally stood except that he had his wand held in front of him and there seemed to be a sense of impending movement to him.

Agie was on the edge of her cushion, waiting to see what would happen. "My Galleons are on Professor Rae" She whispered to Kerry.

"Oh no, dear," Rae shifted from her own dueling position and put down her wand to frown at him. "That's no way to stand. Show the students a proper dueling stance."

Hitachi smiled. He was on the edge of his seat. His eyes flickered from Professor Branxton to Professor Rae. Who was going to win?

[Biochemkris]

"This is my dueling stance," Professor Branxton insisted with a frown. He glanced briefly at the children and back at her. "What's wrong with it?"

Rhiannon lost herself in thought for a few minutes. She was interested to see the two professors duel, but she needed something to occupy her time until then. Charms and DADA. Makes sense that they would be taught in a joint lesson. Even more so when the teachers are married. And I'm pretty good at both subjects, at least as far as I'm aware. So I guess I shouldn't worry too much, she thought. She glanced at the professors to make sure she hadn't missed anything.

Amelia tried hard not to snicker as she watched Rae and Doyle tease each other. Ah, love was in the air. At that moment, she felt a slight tingling of her arm; she sighed knowing what that meant and just ignored it as best as possible. She observed the Defense and Charms teachers, eager for the practical application of the lesson.

Alex sat there and watched excitedly. She laughed at Professor Rae's comment and noticed she wasn't the only one. She watched with interest as the two professor got ready to duel.

Ariana watched with fasination as Rae and Branxton squared off, wondering how it would pan out. She heard a familiar voice and looked to her left startled to see Agie a few seats away from her. She grinned and shook her head, turning back to watch the duel.

Turning back to the duel she couldn't help but smirk at the bickering going on between the two professors. Something crossed her mental block but she shook it off, not wanting the emotions of those around her to cloud her mind.

"That's just the way you STAND, Doyle," she threw up her wand in disgust, but she was laughing. "I would fail you for that stance, dear, so it's a good thing you're so cute." She raised her wand.

Marco supported Doyle all the way. He knew that the Charms Professor would beat the DADA all the way.

Saylie grinned, this was definitely getting interesting. Her eyes flickered back and forth between the professors. What is a proper dueling stance? she wondered idly...and why did it matter? If you were going to fight, why did it matter the way you stood?

"Well, as Defense professor perhaps you could teach the class and me something once I've defeated you," he grinned and resumed his 'stance'. "Ready when you are, dear."

Hermy couldn't help but smile at the banter between the two professors. It was certainly going to be an entertaining lesson, and she relaxed back on her cushion.

Henrick couldn't help but chuckle at how the Headmistress had repremanded, so to speak, Professor Branxton at how he had stood. He pushed his wavy brown hair out of his eyes and leaned forward a bit, listening and watching intently.

He surpressed another giggle as they had a brief argument about his stance.

Anna bit her bottom lip as she watched what was going on between her DADA teacher and Charms teacher. Were the students actually going to...DUEL today? Anna shifted nervously in her seat. She hated to fail...at ANYTHING. She just hoped that if she were set to duel today, she would be partnered with a first or second year. She briefly glanced around at all the older students. They looked so...experienced. Anna swallowed and turned back around to watch the lesson.

Heather smiled as she cheered for the D.A.D.A teacher. She leaned into her seat and sighed.

Cassandra was still grinning at him when she flicked her wand and shouted, "Incarcerous." It was a bit predictable of her, considering everyone knew it was her favorite defensive move, but she thought she'd take it easy on him.

Savannah bit on her lip out of habit, trying as best as she could not to giggle out of amusement as she watched the two Professors with interest. It was cute, their teasing.

Casting a sideways glance at Alexis, then to Curt and Mel; The hufflepuff turned ocean blue eyes back to the front of the class and moved her bag to the floor beside her rather then leaving it on her side where it would surely be in the way soon.

Ever since she'd entered the classroom, Mikaila had been seated silently beside Alex. Kaila was nervous for her first lesson, and did what she could to ease that by not speaking. Rather than speak, and likely humiliate herself by sounding like a stupid first year--which in all rights, she was--she observed the two professors who were in the room.

One of them had been the one at the opening feast who had held two girls. Two of the three children she'd seen at the staff table. It became clear after a moment why he'd had the two girls there. How she'd missed that he and the headmistress were married before was beyond her...oh well.

While watching the two of them prepare to duel, Mikaila tried to listen, and pick up as much as she could. It only took a moment of her silent observations to decide she much preferred Professor Branxton's style of dueling. He was more casual...like a snake ready to strike. There was no warning to those with an untrained eye.

He easily deflected the spell, remembering to enunciate his shield charm spell aloud for the benefit of the students, "Protego."

Then, Professor Branxton retaliated with, "Rictusempra." Surely no one expected him to actually try and curse his wife!

Emily giggled at the repartee going on between the two professors. It was kinda cute.

She jumped as Professor Rae cast her first spell, then grinned and she watched with great interest.. This was certainly entertaining..

Rhiannon's eyes widened in anticipation as the headmistress cast her first move. She was interested to find out what Professor Branxton's countermove would be. She quickly found out and watched the spells go back and forth. And then she wondered if they were going to have to duel. At that thought, her excitement dimmed a little, since she knew she'd have to find a partner.

Heather watched and smiled. She felt a tightening in her body as she thought about her and duleing they just didn't mix.

Ponessa could not help but jump as the headmistress shouted the spell. She flipped aside her silver hair, and flitted her attention to Professor Branxton, but, of course, it was again tuned to Headmistress Rae.

Kayla chuckled when Professor Branxton retaliated with the tickling charm. That was the charm that had won her the duel against Helios, obviously it's quite a useful spell.

His moves were a bit predictable because of how he stood, and Rae deflected it wordlessly. "Well done, love. Confundus."

Alex smiled as they two professor finally started dueling. It was interesting to watch them at it, they only fired two curses and already it was entertaining. She looked over a Kaila.
"Who do you think will win?" She whispered, not wanted to get into trouble. "I think I'm for Professor Rae."

Rictusempra?! Saylie gasped, would he really use that one on his Wife? She laughed, then she bit her lip worriedly and felt as though time were standing still during this duel. Though it was funny at the same time.

He deflected her next spell. "Thank you. Tarantallegra," Professor Branxton cast his next spell. He wasn't really much of a dueler, truth be told and it was only a matter of time before she managed to penetrate his defenses.

Henrick rolled his eyes with a smile, and in doing so, saw Ponessa, seated not too far away. He waves just a little, but quickly looked back to the duel between Professors.

"Professor Branxton." She responded in a whisper, still watching the scene before them unfold. Of course most of this went completely over Mikaila's head. She didn't know any spells yet...well, she did in theory, but hadn't actually tried them.

Part of Mikaila feared using magic. What if she used it and turned into her father. What if she suddenly developed some ego, and started hexing people? For now, she was safe. She couldn't do anything.

Saylie giggled again, dancing, eh? Her initial panic of the duel had faded and she was definitely beginning to enjoy it. She rooted for one professor one minute, then the other the next, thoroughly enjoying the cat and mouse duel.

Ari watched as the duel began. She was watching closely, remembering the protego spell so she could practise that later on since that was one spell she had problems with. She watched as Rae easily stopped the spell Branxton used and smiled as the duel continued.

Rae narrowed her eyes and dodged the spell, shifting her weight slightly. He was learning new tricks, or she was slowing down as she got older. Either way, they were more evenly matched today than ever before. "Stupefy!"

Ponessa gasped softly as the Headmistress used 'stupefy' against her husband. She smilled a bit towards henrick, but, just as he had, very quickly focused on the duel.

Kerry watched the spells fly back and forth with delight. She was silently rooting for Professor Rae, hoping she would take Professor down with a rather fun, unexpected spell.

Alex nodded and turned back to the duel, they seemed to be blocking each others hexes and Alex couldn't hlep but think about how much more interesting it would be if one of them actually hit the other. She quickly shook the thought out of her head, it reminded her of her father since that would be something he would say.

Rhiannon slowly smiled. The professors really seemed to be having fun with their duel. She could tell that some of the younger students were concerned, maybe because they didn't know what the spells were supposed to do, but she knew they weren't trying to hurt each other. And she was having fun watching them.

Professor Branxton had decided to hurl another charm as soon as he finished casting the dancing charm to try and catch her off guard but, of course that left him open for her retaliatory attack. After casting the cheering charm he commented on her stupefy just before it hit, "Crabby," he called her and then fell back unconscious.

Krissy looked on in awe as she saw Professor Braxton fall. "That was bloody brilliant!" she whispered.

Henrick's eyes opened wise, and he quickly leaned forward, looking between the unconsious Branxton and the Headmistress.

So far, Mikaila had understood what one spell was. Tarantallegra, had it reached it's target, would have casued Professor Rae, to begin dancing...unless Kaila had gotten her texts mixed up again. Which there was a good chance of. She wasn't nearly the walking refrence that her sister was. Kaila didn't reatian the knowledge as well as Rosalie had. She needed to study more....memorize things. Alie just committed it to memory.

Watching dueling was all that thrilling, she came to decide. All it was, was watching sparks fly back and forth. They were blocking everything. Nothing was happening. Muggle dueling was far more thrilling than this was. The only reason Mikaila was even taking sides on this, was because she liked Professor Branxton's style.

Her attention remained fixed on the pare. When Professor Branxton fell, she sighed, and shook her head. Kaila turned to Alex.

"It's good we didn't make bets." She said shortly. Kaila was a sort of dissapointed her candidate had fallen.

Kayla started applauding Professor Rae and leaned over to Krissy. "One for the girl's" she whispered.

Alex gasped as she watched her professor fall back, she knew he was unconscious, and she didn't expect Professor Rae actually try to hit him with a spell at all. She looked up at the DADA professor, wondering what she was going to do next.

Anna let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. That was amazing to watch. "Now," she spoke to herself. "Getting out there and doing THAT myself just may be a different story..."

Saylie gasped as the professor fell back. She moved instinctively, almost getting up, then realizing how silly that was, she sat back down, wondering what Professor Rae was going to do. This was by far one of the stangest lessons she'd ever been in.

"Doyle!" Cassandra walked right into his charm, and it rocked her on her feet for a moment. "Crabby!" She took a step toward him and giggled. "Crabby..." It was so funny, that word. Like... made of silly little crabs and their wiggling legs and clicking claws. She giggled again, pressing her hand over her mouth. "Click click," she whispered, sitting down suddenly to roar with laughter.

Ari watched, a shocked look on her face as she saw her Charms professor fall unconcious and blinked. Wow, I thought that would last longer she thought with a frown as she watched. She almost clapped at Rae's victory, but then remembered it was a class and looked more alert, wanting to get to the practical protion of the lesson.

Marco almost jumped up in shock. "Nooooo." He noticed he had said that a bit loud. But how dare she knock Doyle unconcious. That is unfair play.

Ponessa jumped, compulsively, of course, but knew he wasn't seriously hurt. She sighed, although it was a bit uneasy, "Good show, Professor Rae." She nodded and smiled quickly.

At her laughing, however, she herself began to chuckle, putting her hand over her mouth--a habit she had picked up years ago.

Jai gasped and kelt down on her chusion to see the Professor. She couldn't help but giggle, since he was being so cocky about winning and whatever, she sure showed him a thing or two.

Juniper covered her eyes. They were going to hurt each other, she knew it. It was obvious that both professors knew how to duel and were not planning on hurting each other, but Juniper was worried anyway. What if one of them overestimated the other’s defenses? She knew she was probably being a pessimist, but Juniper was also worried that one of their hexes would be misaimed and hit something other than its target. Her only consolation was the fact that the professors probably would not use a spell that could cause any permanent damage. Not that that was much consolation.

And there. Their spells had hit each other. Professor Branxton was unconscious and the headmistress herself had been hit by a spell from Professor Branxton. Why was she laughing? Juniper saw nothing funny about the situation.

Kayla looked at Krissy. "Uh shouldn't someone do something. One Professor is lying on the floor unconscious and the other one has gone loopy" Kayla said.

Saylie now looked from the unconcious professor to the giggling one. The Headmistress had gone loopy from the spell. She was torn between an urge to laugh and one to panic. Who was going to help professor Branxton? She raised her wand, aiming it at the headmistress, "Finite Incantatum!" she said, firmly.

Heather watched as he fell and then mumbled"No," she sat up and watched to see what happend next.

Krissy smiled. "It's `er husband. I'm sure the head mistress can take care of it. She's jest laughing at his last comment." Krissy admired their display of love.

Anna glanced to her right as she listened to the words of the Hufflepuff. Anna wanted to tell the girl that it was just the effects of the last part of the duel, but she didn't want to get into trouble for talking.

Anna bit her bottom lip again, opting to just simply sit and wait to see what happened next.

Henrick thought on this, although the question had not been aimed at him. "No." He said, however. He himself (And Ponessa, he knew from expirience) had had their moments when they had laughed untill they cried...over nothing. He smiled at the thought.

Rae stopped laughing abruptly and wiped her eyes. "Thank you, Saylie," she scrambled across the floor and knelt over Doyle's still body. She'd been completely out of control. They would definitely have to bring in a mediator next time. "He's fine," she called out.

Her eyebrows furrowed together when Professor Rae began to laugh, completly ignoring her husband who was laying unconscious on the floor. She looked from the fallen Charms Professor, to the Headmistress in confusion for a moment. It was too bad Alie wasn't here. She'd know what to do.

"Uhm...Headmistress? Shouldn't you be...uh...helping him?" Kaila asked her uncertainly. She'd been hit by Professor Branxton's last spell. It had been silent, so no one in the room knew what it was....

Before her question had been heard, another girl took the spell off Professor Branxton, and the Headmistress seemed to come to her senses slightly. Kaila shot an uncertain glance at Alex before relaxing a bit.

Savannah's smile faded ever so slightly, turning uncertainly to look around. Okay, Professor Braxton wasn't moving, and Professor Rae was laughing away; both had been hit by spells. "Uhm..I think we may want to do something?" She suggested, in a small voice. "Or will the effects wear off quickly?" She hushed once more, for Professor Rae was fine again.

Saylie smiled, though her hands were shaking slightly. Her move had been completely one of reflex. She drew in a shaky breath and realized that she hadn't even had to think about it, she recognized the symptoms and had just acted. She sat back a little on the cushion, still shaking, but in control. "You're welcome, Professor." she said quietly.

Amelia gasped as the charms professor fell unconscious. Oh no! He'll be alright though - his wife wouldn't really hurt him, right? She raised slowly off her cushion into a more kneeling position so that she could observe the situation better. Sparkling green eyes peered down at the Charms Professor: dreamy. Snap out of it, Mia! You're in class now!, she thought, mentally slapping herself. She made a mental note to visit Branxton in his office later..

She gazed around the classroom and then noticed that Rae was sitting down laughing hysterically. Wow. This is insane. She pressed her lips together, wondering if she should do something.

Ponessa sighed, a bit shakily, when Rae said that he was alright. He was, after all, one of her favorite Professors. She shifted, relaxing in her seat, and flipping, again, her silver hair away.

Heather sighed in reliefe as she said he'd be okay. She felt a little closed up sitiing in the back. She leaned back into the bag and rubbed her temples.

He sat idly in his desk, rigid in posture, but hardly on the edge of his seat like so many of the other students around him. The spectacle had failed to enthrall him.

"Enervate," Cassandra cast the spell and waited for him to wake up. "Thank you all for your help. Professor Branxton has just been stunned, and he'll be awake in a moment. Why don't you all return to your seats, and we'll resume class in a moment?" She sounded calm, but she was holding onto Doyle tightly.

Krissy watched the display closely. Professor Rae was holding on to her husband with a sense of urgency. Turning to Kayla she murmured. "D'yeh think something went wrong?"

The sixth year sighed in relief as Rae came to her senses and then knelt before her husband. She waited patiently, and a feeling of warmth spread through her as Rae said that he was fine. She looked over at Vannah and Curt, giving them a thankful smile that their professors were alright.

Still not believing that Rae would actually knock her husband unconscious, she sighed as she stood up to return to her seat and wait for their next instruction.

She walked back towards her seat, but paused briefly beside the Headmistress, "Professor?" she began timidly, "Are you sure everything is okay?" she asked, still speaking softly with her large hazel eyes focused on Professor Branxton.

"Don't say that!" Henrick whispered to the second year girl, quickly but quietly. He very quickly twiched his eye, but was unaware of this as he looked back to the two Professors.

He smiled slightly, "There, then." He said, a small hint of satisfaction in his voice.

seeing the professor slowly start to move Krissy breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh thank god..." she breathed.

"Look" Kayla said trying to keep the worry out of her voice. "Don't stress just yet, we don't know anything's wrong. He might be going for the dramatic effect" Kayla said hopefully.

This had been one of his favorite classes, but today he really hated it. What use was this class for him now? Helios couldn't use magic during the summer when he needed it most.

Damn these English wizards and their politics. He was royalty! Where was his diplomatic immunity!?

His way of protesting was by staying to the back of the class, where the shadows seemed to be the darkest. The color hadn't seemed to return to his hair, keeping it dark gray. His left arm was tucked into his robe, tied up by his Hufflepuff scarf like a sling.

The headmistress was in the same room with him and didn't have a clue of what he had done over the summer. If he didn't feel so miserable he would smile. Kayla and Krissy were here. He prayed they not notice him.

"Well," she smiled even as she gazed into his eyes and felt his head. "I think it was very valuable for them to see us both act like idiots. I think I'm going to go teach now, yes?"

Kayla looked back over her shoulder and took a good look this time and she could just make him out standing in the shadows, she turned back to Krissy. "Probably doesn't want to join in, seeing how I kicked his butt last time we had a dueling lesson" Kayla chuckled. She was getting a little peeved, he'd been away for months and now he couldn't be bothered to come over and talk to her.

She kissed the top of his head as she rose. "Alright, my dears. Let's go ahead and organize ourselves. Professor Branxton and I thought it was quite natural to combine our classes, and I'm sure you can see why. What parallels can you draw between the disciplines of Charms and Defense?"

Krissy raised her hand. "Well yeh need to know decent charms offensive and defensive ones so that yeh may duel properly" she said in her deep brogue.

Juniper raised her hand. She had uncovered her eyes. "Well, like you just showed us, both are used in duels," she said.

"You seem to have to have a thorough knowledge of both to excel in either." Saylie said, raising her hand, and remembering the duel and the spells they had used.

Amelia listened to Rae carefully and then sat up straight, raising her hand politely. "Charms and Defense are both used in duels, as you have shown us. And really either one can be effective as long as you remain alert and watchful at all times." She sighed, realizing that while she recognized the parallels between the two subjects, it was hard to really put it in words right now.

After raising her hand Agie said. "To be a true master in dueling, it is best to be able to master both, so you can attack and defend."

Rhiannon had lost her smile as everything about the demonstration had gone wrong. When Professor Branxton regained consciousness, she, like some other students, had let out a breath she hadn't known she was holding. With another glance at the Charms professor, she turned to the Headmistress. Curt looked sideways to Amelia and nodded his head, she had a good answer, but than what he was thinking anyways....Curt sat up straight and much more alert now, keen on earning his house, house points.

Joseph raised his hand, "I think we've established that they are both used in dueling, but I think that to be able to duel properly, a combination of Charms defensive and DADA offensive can set you above any Wizard that could stand in your way." he said this much more boldly than he expected. he was usually shy, this was quite different from his usual personality, he wasn't even embarassed...

Kerry raised her hand, she had an idea in her head, she only hoped it made sense as it came out in words. "In charms you enchant an object to behave in a way that isn't normal for that object. In doing that, the object or the person doesn't really change, they just do something unexpected. So how does this parallel defence? Well you can use these charms to help protect yourself. You can summon and object...you can make an object fly, you can make it levitate, you can do a variety of things. It's like what Agie said, it's when you can master these charms to do things to help you protect yourself or defend yourself that the parallel occurs."

"Well, the students this year all are so naturally bright," Cassandra laughed, looking at Doyle. "You all obviously see the parallels between the two disciplines, and if you can master basic wand movements and a dueling stance, you are well on your way to a proficiency in charms... and becoming a master dueler." She bowed shortly to them. "Questions so far?"

"If I may," Professor Branxton said and stood to answer the first question. "Defense implies being on the defensive so, what you say about Defense Against the Dark Arts being offensive is erroneous. Most defensive spells are considered charms and offensive spells hexes. However, as you have seen, under the right conditions, even a harmless charm can turn into an attack."

"All of the spells you use for dueling, whether protective defensive spells or offensive spells to be proactive against attackers, are charms. You're absolutely right."

Krissy raised her hand. "If Professor Braxton had been in a better stance would he have had a better chance against yeh?" Krissy asked remembering their banter about his stance being too close to his normal standing position.

"Your stance, or the way you stand while dueling, is actually vital to your success. If you hold yourself all loosely and have no focus to your movements, you have less control over your own casting and your reflexes are dulled. Just pull yourself into a vigilant, balanced stance for a moment and you'll see how much more focused all your energy and attention becomes."

Rhiannon slightly blushed as the first year she had questioned responded to Professor Branxton. She hadn't meant to embarrass the poor kid. She just was curious, since she had thought that the immediate assumption would be that DADA was defensive, since that was part of its title. And the boy had said otherwise.

Then she gained her slight smile back as Professor Rae said she was right. It always had felt good to her to know that she had said something accurate.

"Ah, excellent question Gwen. If I may, Professor," he said with a glance to his wife first. "Transfiguration can also be used in duels, though I have only seen it used by the most advanced duelers. I, as you have seen, have never mastered the use of transfiguration during a duel because it requires quite a bit of forethought and an awareness of your surroundings and your opponent for which I have not the skill. Duels can be rather chaotic. Charms and hexes are generally quick and easy solutions to deter most opponents. Though, our resident ex-auror could ellaborate a bit more, I'm sure."

He looked up and spotted another hand in the air. "Yes?"

She was worried about him being out of bed and standing in the back of the room. she was the only one that knew what he was hiding under his cloak and she prayed it hadn't gotten worse. "Helios, copy me notes so yeh don't get beaten by Kayla in a duel again."She whispered giving him a meek smile hoping he could handle the small joke. He needed to focus on his Lessons and she was hoping to help him.

Curt smiled slightly with excitement, and he didn't know why, but his next move was spontaneous and almost involuntary. He jumped up from his seat and walked up to Professor Branxton. Looking around his surroundings slightly, Curt gave the Professor a weak smile before he continued, "Umm. Professor, you mind if I spar against you for a moment. I know I'll get completely dominated but I really want to see what it's like dueling an adult." Curt said hopefully, he had high hopes of being an auror after school, and knew that this would give him a tiny taste of it, even though he probably wouldn't even get close to landing a single hit.

Krissy took a deep breath and considered Professor Rae's advice taking a strong stance she made sure her arm held steady and gave a brief bow to Kayla. With a quick wave of her wand She shouted "Expelliarmus!" Hoping to catch Kayla off guard.

Joseph just walked out into the middle of the room, with no partner, he decided to develop his stance. he started by standing up straight and holding his wand pointed at the floor in front of him. This seemed to be very comfortable. He was confident enough but, he couldn't do it. he went back to his seat and hoped no one would attempt to duel him.

She grinned and whispered. Orrrrr you could stay and play? Apedemak needs a partner, or else you could spar with me or Dia after our little duel... " She smiled warmly at him, meeting his eyes.

Next she worked on her posture, making sure her feet were a little spred out and well balanced. He centre of gravity was also in tune. She was ready to go.

He smile wided once more as she said. "Ready sis?"

Anna nodded at the girl. She was too focused and too ready to stream words together at the moment. She thought Gwen was a third year, but her being a second year was even better. Anna felt more confident at her first-year knowledge.

We can save that for the Duelling Arena on another day, ok?" Kerry smirked.
