View Full Version : Lesson 1: A Review
Allegra De Luca sat behind her desk looking out at the students as they walked in. Her classroom, neat as usual, had an air of darkness in it this term. Some portraits of her family members looked down at the students smirking. Rolling her eyes at a few of the portraits, Allegra nodded to her students as they took their seats. Written on the board next to her was "Ancient Runes: A Review Of The Basics".

Mallory entered the classroom and spotted the professor at her desk. Wow. Everything was so neat and tidy. "Hello, professor..." she said and took a seat at the third row. While waiting for the other students to arrive, she took out some parchment and wrote down "Ancient Runes: A Review of The Basics" right on top.

Jay Benz frolicked into her class happy as ever. "Good Afternoon Professor, Isn't a lovely day?" She sang to her Professor. Normally Jay wasn't like this, but what happened last evening changed her whole perspective on life.
Jay took her usual seat in class. She got a piece of parchment and her quill. She wrote Ancient Runes: A Review Of The Basics in big curly letters at the top. For the next few minutes, she waited for all of the students to charge in.

Brooke quickly came into the classroom and nodded her hellos to the professor. Taking a seat near the back of the room she set her bag on the floor next to her chair and took out some parchment and a quill. As she glanced at the board, she wrote the name of the lesson at the top of her parchment.

Chris came into the classroom and said hello to the teacher and looked around the class, heading straight to the back of the class. He saw a girl sitting alone, so hoping she wouldn't mind company he walked over and sat down beside the girl, setting his bag on the back of his chair, he took out parchment and quills with ink and wrote down the lesson and date. Once done he look over to the girl. "Hi there! I'm Chris. Mind if I sit here?" he asked her, starting to draw on his parchment.

"Hey Blair!!!" Jay scooted over so Blair could sit with her until class started. "Your gunna love this one too!" she said. "It's really cool, like the pensieve." Jay remembered how odd yet exciting to be inside a dead person's memory.
Ali strolled into the class and noticed that only a few students were there. She walked to an empty chair, and sat down. She pulled out the stuff she needed for class and waited for the lesson to start.

Patrick walked bitterly into Ancient Runes. As if he didn't have enough going on now he had to sit through Runes. His worst subject. He took a seat at the back of the class and took to staring unseeingly at the wall to the right of the door.

Audrey entered the classroom and sat down quietly. She hadn't taken this class before, but decided to try it this year.
Allegra cleared her throat looking at her students. This meant be quiet or suffer teh consequences. Getting up, she walked over to the board and bowed to her students. "Hello and welcome to Ancient Runes. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Professor De Luca and obviously I am your instructor for this course. This class today will be a review of the basics. Now what exactly IS a rune?"

Taika Ai strolled into the classroom, looking around at the many portraits lining the walls. She looked around at the Professor and said a soft, "Hello, Professor," before taking a seat right up front. She pulled out a quill, ink and parchment, ready to take notes and looked around the room to see if she recognized anyone, which was highly unlikely.
Taika Ai's hand shot into the air. "The rune is a symbol upon a piece of wood or stone usually. Each rune has a different meaning and they are used in a form of Divination," she replied. "Rune casting is a common practise among the Nortic people."

Mallory raised her hand. "Runes are a set of symbols of Germanic or Scandinavian origin that concisely embody the most potent magical system of the ancient world."

Star quietly walked into the classroom, afraid to being late. She didn't want to be late, it drew too much attention to her if she was.
She looked around, and slid into a seat at the back as Professor De Luca as she spoke. She quickly pulled out her ink and parchment as she thought over what a rune was. She already knew, but she didn't dare put her hand up.

Rapunzel raised her hand and added to the definition. "Runes are also ancient characters used for writing. Each rune is both a letter and a vessel of natural potency."

Patrick hurried to write down some sort of note as the other students started to answer. Runes are.... the note trailed off without really serbing its purpose. Not really very informative.

Faye raised her hand, "Runes make up an alphabet used by ancient germanic tribes of northern europe from pre-christian times until the thirteenth century, they are also a popular tool of divination." Faye added, "also, 'Rune' is derived from 'Runa' an old germanic word for whisper, secret, or mystery."

Alicia hurried into the classroom and sat down quietly, unpacking her belongings. She took out a piece of parchment and scribbled down the heading "Runes - A Review of the Basics" and then raised her hand.
"Runes, as Taika Ai explained, are a form of Divination and also like a secret language. Magical Symbols used to define a character or creature" she said brightly.

Tara sat in class with her pen and paper as she listened to the class describe what runes are. An ancient alphabet, used in divination, magical symbols used to define characters and creatures, used by germanic tribes. She thought to herself as she wrote them down on her parchment.

Brooke looked up from her parchment and smiled at the boy. She opened her mouth to answer, but then Professor De Luca started the lesson. So instead, she just smiled and nodded. Cassandra would kill her if she lost any points this term. She listened to everyone elses answers and began to jot some of them down.

Kerry rolled her eyes at the girls behind her whispering to each other and tried to ignore them, as she sat back twirling her quill between her fingers focussing on what to her classmates said about what they knew of runes.
Hearing some of their answered, sparked Kerry to remember some information she had learned in previous classes.
Kerry raised her hand, "Runes are set a of ancient symbols. Each of the runic characters represent certain letter in the alphabet. If I remember correctly there were originally 24 runes, known as the Futhark. I believe they were used for writing or communicating messages, and for inscriptions and epitaphs." Kerry thought for a moment and then continued "I also remember they were used on amulets and charms. And let's see there was something else.....ummm... Oh yes! Runes were also used in divination; for such things as rituals, magic and spells" Kerry smiled, happy to have recalled all of that information after the long holiday.
Ryan wasn't sure at all of his answer but remember reading something about ancient runes somewhere so he decided to raised his hand. "Among early peoples writing was a serious thing, full of magical power. In its only reference to writing, the Iliad calls it “baneful signs.” The Germanic peoples used a runic alphabet as their form of writing, using it to identify combs or helmets, make calendars, encode secret messages, and mark funeral monuments. Runes were also employed in casting spells, as to gain a kiss from a sweetheart or to make an enemy's gut burst. In casting a spell the writing of the runes was accompanied by a mumbled or chanted prayer or curse, also called a rune, to make the magic work. They provide a key to understanding the lives and beliefs of the ancient people who created them, and have much to teach us about a way of life that was perhaps more inimately connected to the natural World, and to the realm of spirit, than our own"
Allegra's eyes narrowed at the students whispering in her class. "That's five points from Ravenclaw and Slytherin for the talking. Now all of you practically got the gist of it. Some of you I've had in previous years know a bit about the runes already. Runes are not just letters. Keep this in mind when you're in my class. Runes are a mystery. Not everyone knows every single thing about them. Now The Elder Futhark is divided into three groups of eight. Who can tell me what these groups are?"

Katelyn was about to apologize to the professor, but thought against it. It might cost her even more points. She scribbled down the question, and waited for someone to answer, for she didnt know herself. She was taking very organized, neat notes to help her study.
Ryan raised is hands thinking that he might know the answer. "I think first one is Fehu, Uruz,Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo. The second one is Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowulo. The last one is Teiwaz, Berkana, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Inguz, Othila and Dagaz."

Kerry raised her hand, "the three groups of eight are called called aett or aettir. It helps us to remember their order, which has significance in magical uses. The first one is called Frehr or Freyia's Aett, the second one is called the Heimdall's Aett, and the third is called the Tyr's Aett."

Alicia looked up at Professor De Luca and raised her hand "The three groups were called the Aettr, or Aett singularly" she said. She opened her bag and found a book on Ancient Runes and opened it to a page and showed it:

"The Runes weren't used for Divination, or to make predictions. They were inscribed on amulets and were used for luck and protection in battle." she finished.

"You are correct! Five points to your house. The first Ętt is the one we will be studying this term. Now your homework assignment will be to pick your favorite rune from the First Ętt and tell me why this is your favorite rune. You are all free to go now." Allegra felt this lesson was short but there was perfect reasoning for it. She felt sick. Last time she felt sick in class, she fainted.

Kerry was excited to gain some valuable points for her house. "We might just get out of last place," she thought to herself as she jotted down the last of her notes and began to write down the homework.
She was amazed at how short the class was, but was happy that she recalled most of the work. "Perhaps the homework won't be that hard for me this time," she thought to herself some more as she began to pack away her things.
After all her stuff was put away, Kerry closed up her bag and slung it over her back. Gettting up and walking to the door, "Bye Professor, have a great day!" She said as she began to head out the door. She noticed as she did, that the professor looked a bit pale. She nodded to herself, "That's why class was shortened, the professor musn't be feeling well, I just hope it's nothing serious" Kerry thought as she turned and left the classroom.

Katelyn was a bit shocked at the shortness of the class, but shrugged as she scribbled down some notes. She packed up her bag, and walked to the door.
"Have a good evening, Professor," she said, smiling, and walked out the door. Even though the teacher had yelled at her, she didnt care. She shouldnt have been talking.

Qaz was writing as fast as she could. She didn't want to miss a word. She was very supprised at how short the class was. More time to work on the homework. When she finished taking all her notes, she packed up and followed Katelyn out the door, after nodding goodbye to the professor.

Taika Ai jotted down the homework and packed her bag. The lesson had been incredibly short and she was wondering why; none of her other lessons, save for flying had been this short.
She contemplated the homework as she packed her things and walked to the door. "Good-bye, Professor," she said softly leaving.
