You see a notice tacked to the front door of the classroom:

Attention students. The first DADA class will occur Thursday, March 18 at 8:00 EST. Please be prompt and bring all of your supplies with you. Please also bring with you any ideas or topics you would like to discuss this term, as well as a positive attitude.

Cassirin
03-19-2004, 02:23 AM
The door to the DADA classroom is open. You enter and see the Professor at the front of the room, feverishly writing on a sheet of parchment.

"Hello, class will begin shortly. Please find a seat and get your supplies ready." She smiled and returned to her notes.

Miss Radcliffe the Pirate
03-19-2004, 02:25 AM
Chelsea walks in, eager for the first DADA lesson to begin. She takes a seat near the back and places her bag on the table, getting ready.

~Slytherin_Heir~
03-19-2004, 02:25 AM
:Christina slowly walks into the classroom taking a seat toward the back of the class: "hello Professor"

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho!

"Good afternoon, Professor."

Alana walks into the class and takes a seat near the front, pulling out her quill, ink, and parchment.

Arkee Maldemer
03-19-2004, 02:27 AM
Arkee squirmed in her seat. She wasn't too thrilled at the prospect of having to learn how to defend herself. To her, it implied that she would most definately find herself in a situation that required this kind of knowledge, and of course nobody wants to be in that kind of situation.

"Professor, will there be a review session for students who didn't attend last year?" she asked.

Kellarae
03-19-2004, 02:27 AM
Rowen walks in and sits down by Chelsea. She starts to get her supplies out of her bag.

Dawn Bloom

Dawn walks in and takes a seat, pulling out her suplies and folder.

Moony521
03-19-2004, 02:29 AM
Moony walks in and can't wait for class to start.

"Hello, Proffesor."

She takes a seat near the front and starts to get ready. Smiling non-stop.

Kellarae
03-19-2004, 02:30 AM
"A bit," Rowen says, smiling at Chelsea

03-19-2004, 02:33 AM
quidditch_chick walks into the classroom ready to start her first class of defense against the dark arts. She sits down by some of the ravenclaws and takes out her wand, quill, paper, etc.

"Hello...."

Sakura_kura
03-19-2004, 02:33 AM
"I'M here! I'm not late! Had to run!" Sakura sits down by a window and takes out her stuff.

"Hi, Padfoot" Moony turns to her friend."Are you excited?"

Moony now was happier then ever.

Alana looks around. "I'm a second year, does that make me special?"

Cassirin
03-19-2004, 02:38 AM
Professor Rae smiled at the large group of eager students. "Welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts. I"m not much for protocol, so let's just call it what you all call it anyway. DADA. I hope you are all as eager to learn as I am to teach. I have posted class rules outside my office, and I hope you took the opportunity to review them before showing up today. I'd like to remind you not to chat during class. Now... enough boring talk. Let's get started."

The professor walked around her desk and sat on the front of it, her legs swinging a bit.

"I'm Professor Cassandra Rae. I do have a bit of background in the Dark Arts, which is why Headmistress Loryen asked me to teach you this year. Obviously, I know about the Dark Arts, but what I'd really like to learn during the first class is what YOU know."

"Why do you think we need to learn about defense against the Dark Arts?"

Arkee Maldemer

I think we should learn about DADA because if we don't know it, we'd be in trouble if it ever came up sometime when we're out of school all by ourselves.

*raie hand again* Also to practice defensive-offensive kind of magic, better known as *anti-hexes*, which some authors consider another word for hexes too... it wouldn't be wrong to consider it that way, after all *anti-hexes* aren't but hexes used for defensive situation, but are hexes all the same, and even the *anti-hex* idea come from an ideology like "the one who started is the real responsible" while those fighting back are doing harm as well... " Nadia wonders.

Professor Rae raised her hands to silence the class and gave a loud laugh. "Wow... that was overwhelming. Obviously you all have an opinion about why a class such as this is necessary. I heard a lot of variations on the same idea... we don't know what will cross our path, and we need to be prepared. Unfortunately, there IS Dark Magic in the world, and it doesn't just happen to those who are prepared. We at Hogwarts want to send our students out there ready for as much as possible.

Now... and please, I want thoughtful answers. Don't just blurt something out... let's try to form a general definition so we are all on the same page. What are "Dark Arts?" What does that term even mean?"

Meandering
03-19-2004, 02:48 AM
Peony raised her hand. "Magick is neither black nor white and it can never be categorized into those two. Dark Arts is magic used to hurt someone. Even a charm like Wingardium Leviosa could be termed as Dark Arts if someone used to to levitate his enemy right off a cliff."

Well, actually, I'm wondering it myself. I'm hoping by the end of this class we will be able to tell a dark creature from a common beast...

She decided to add a bit to what she just said. "It's kind of like the stuff that's banned. Because it goes against laws and such.

Arkee Maldemer
03-19-2004, 02:51 AM
"Dark Arts? In my opinion, Dark Arts are any sort of magic used against another person, in order to harm for one's own purposes. They are sometimes dangerous, and never used for the good of anybody. Any sort of magic that you do that brings someone else down while putting you in power over them is Dark, I think. The Dark Arts magics are conceived with the intent of evil for power."

The Dark Arts differ from other forms of magic in the intent of the wizard using it. Most magic is relatively neutral--it can be used for bad or good. Some magic, however, is evil in it's intention through and though.

~Slytherin_Heir~
03-19-2004, 02:54 AM
"Ya you have a good point with the Tickling charm there. I mean just a simple charm could be used in that way."

Sakura_kura
03-19-2004, 02:54 AM
"That's ture, and a tickle charm can also be used for fun! I also heard that scientists would put a dripper above someone's head and the water that would drip down, even though only one drop would make the person go insane, but water's used to keep people alive, so maybe it's just the intention of the person"

I've a theory as to why some kind of magics are considered Dark. *raising hand* First for they are illigal, people are frightened of whatever magic that can hurt or harm them some way or another. It may consist of ways that are violent, and even in mythology it's said that Dark Magic was the magic demons feeds of...

"By that reasoning any charm or spell is a Dark Art spell. You can technically use anything, you just have to be creative in the application of it. Why not just ban magic altogether, I mean it's all dangerous if used improperly."

"It odes depend on the person castinng the spell. If you had a normal student try the Curcatious Curse on someone, they'd probably do nothing. But an evil wizard who has evil intentions? That'd inflict lots of damage."

"Excellent points being raised, class... I can tell you are really thinking. Some of you have really hit the nail on the head. Augureycry, five points to Slytherin... because you are absolutely right. There is a very fine line between Dark and acceptable magic, and a lot of what makes a spell dark is intent. Of course, there are some spells that are entirely dark and have no redeeming purposes.

Anyone? Can you name one please?"

But again, charms it's almost every spell! Even the words Charm means manipulating people and items, which isn't quite an altruist thing to do.

Almost all the spells can be used the wrong way, Anthony said. It's not always the spell that's bad...it's how you use it.
"Exactly," Ashlie said. "There are the bad spells. But in the end, it comes down to who the witch/wizard is and how they're using the spell. It's the same as a knife. It can be a utensil. But in the wrong hands, it can be a weapon."

But that's what I mean, if he was insane, he either didn't know that he was doing something wrong, thought he was doing something good, or did it just because. The point is he didn't think about the reprecussions to his actions. Lets think about someone else shall we? Voldemort, he knew that what he was doing was wrong, but he felt that his reasoning justified it. He truly thought that muggles were horrible, undeserving creatures that didn't deserve to live. They don’t figure as a magic creature in Newts Scamander’s book, nor do I think they would be considered inside the ‘Beings Division’, nor boggarts nor dementors are, and that’s exactly the *things* to fight against in DADA coincidentally. Are they spirits, or apparitions maybe? And what about the Lethifold, because it *is* a fantastic best, yet a simple Patronus Charm can push it away, as if being weightless.

"Actually I think the Ministry classifies them as non-humans, just like werewolves." said Skiving.
"And that's wrong," said Peony violently. "They're still humans. They can't help it if they've got some sort of defect in their character that makes them drink blood or morph under moonlight. It's wrong to call them Non-humans just because of that. Human is when you have feelings, intelligent feelings, not just fear, but depression, and worry. It's so stupid to classify them as Non-humans! Why doesn't the ministry just destroy them all, and that's that? Why is it just because a centaur has four legs he is classified a Non-Human? If they have human intelligence, then they're human."

Banshees?? But they are supposed to be the messagers to tell the families when one of their members is about to die, it shoudn't be a dark beast? And werewolves? They are vicious towards humans but... sorry, I don't understand...

"Please... let's not get off topic. I'm hearing lots of good questions, and I wish that our class wasn't moving so quickly that I am not able to get to them before we veer off onto another interesting tangent. I think you're beginning to get the picture about what I meant when I said there is a very fine line between Dark and acceptable.

"As for the issue of vampires and werewolves, no, I do NOT think that they are dark all the time. But there is a dark magic that works within them at certain times. A werewolf would be the first to tell you that there is an intent to harm and spread the "disease" that comes out on the full moon. They are not intrinsically Dark, but the magic is there. The Ministry chooses to classify them as Dark... who am I to argue?" The professor shrugged good naturedly.

"I realize also that there are creatures not on the list that you believe should be there. This really is a better question to be bringing to Professor Hendrik in your Care of Magical Creatures class... what is it in their survival needs that might cause them to act in a way that brings harm to Muggles and wizards?

"Now... I'd like to give you your homework assignment. If you have any questions that went unanswered, I will be around for a while after class, and I would love to discuss with you. We had a very short class today, but I feel that we covered what was needed. Things should slow down a bit for our next classes.

"By next class, I want you to owl me (email me ONLY, no PMs) with a paragraph about what you know already about the Dark Arts. A paragraph should have between 8 to 12 sentences. I would also like any topics or concepts you would like covered in one of our classes.

A werewolf is suffering from an illness that isn't Dark. Werewolves, I think are included in the study of DADA mainly because other wizards don't want to become one. It's an infection, in some way just like a cold but of that can't cured at this moment. The Wolfbane potion has gone a long way into improving the lives of werewolves.

I think one of the problems we have with centaurs is that we, humans, are sometimes to full of ourselves to be told we are wrong by a creature not of our species. Some people take it as an insult; so then they dislike the centaurs and might say something rude to them.
