| | Ancient Runes 1 • A Song of Ice and Fire For the first time this term, tiny ice crystals can be seen falling from the sky as you pass the windows on your way to the Ancient Runes classroom. Starting with just a few flecks at breakfast, by now the snow is steadily falling. This of course impacted the temperature in the corridors, cooling the air slightly until you happen to be passing by the torches scattered down the corridor. Winter certainly has finally arrived.
The moment you get to the doorway to the classroom, it is likely that the moderate heating charm that has been casted is not the first thing that is noticed. Rather more noticeable is that all of the desks have all been pushed against the walls of the room. Needless to say, this is not the typical arrangement that students of this class are used to as the desks are normally grouped in small clusters. If you're already curious as to why this is, then your professor will quite pleased with that.
Speaking of your professor, perhaps even more intriguing is the sight of him. Instead of casually standing out in the corridor welcoming everyone in, Professor Flamel is wandering about the classroom. A number of lit wax candles, similar to the ones seen in the Great Hall, are gently bobbing up and down at chest-height. Without a word and just a simple wave of his hand, a candle levitates from the box in his hand, lights up, and joins the fray.
"Come in, come in," he says, hearing footsteps coming from the entrance into the room, as his hand makes another hand motion and another candle moves out of the box and into position. "Go find a candle to stand beside and have your rune stones at hand. We will be getting started shortly." OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Ancient Runes lesson of the term! Before posting, please familiarise yourself with the classroom rules and also keep in mind that this is not the first lesson that your characters have had with Flamel this term. The lesson has begun, so feel free to jump in. ^___^ Lesson Progression

Hanna decided to walk towards the desk, choosing Isa. The task sent a surge of anxiety through her, but it was short lived. As a perfectionist, she wanted to believe all of the candles would be extinguished. But she reminded herself that she was only one person, and instead decided she was going to extinguish at least one candle to contribute to Team Isa.
She put the Kenaz stone into the pocket of her robe, as she wouldn't be needing that. Instead, she clasped the Isa stone into her right hand. The closest candle near her was The One. Heading towards it she closed her eyes. Confidence. Yes, she was confident that this candle would extinguish. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she chanted.

Carton Law Enforcement | Joining Team Isa (and she's not happy about it xD) Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll Tina took a few deep breaths, hoping it would be enough to calm her, but it didn't help much. She was still frustrated with her inability to invoke Isa! The longer it took her to get it right, the more angry she became, and the angrier she got, the harder it was to concentrate on the rune. It was a vicious cycle. She turned the stone over in her hand, lost in her thoughts. She supposed she should try Isa again before she got into trouble...
Tina held her stone, but before she could recite the galdr, Flamel was moving on to the next activity. She inwardly groaned. Great, teamwork... just what she needed. What was it with the Hogwarts professors and group assignments? Was that a job requirement or something? Why couldn't they leave that buddy-buddy stuff on the quidditch pitch where it belonged?
Tina's eyes darted from one team to the other. Which should she join? Hmm... a rune she knew she could invoke (Kenaz) vs. one she struggled with (Isa). It was a no-brainer! The only thing worse than making mistakes was making mistakes with other people watching. She started to join the Kenaz team, but as she looked back, she saw the Isa team was woefully outnumbered. Just perfect. She didn't know what to do! Join Isa and look foolish when she couldn't invoke the rune or join Kenaz and risk getting in trouble for throwing the teams off balance?
With a very strong reluctance, Tina joined the Isa team. She clutched her Isa stone as she waited to start. Blink, blink. Wait, did he say "winner"? Was this a competition now? Her heart sank. What if her "team" lost because of her inability to invoke Isa and everyone got angry at her? The thought already had her panicking so much, she almost missed Flamel's call to start Scrambling to react, she double- no, triple checked the galdr for Isa and set her sights on the nearest candle. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she chanted, hoping against hope that it would work.

Jackson nodded as Professor Flamel introduced the activity to them. Yes yes, this made sense after all of the responses about ice and fire. The concept of runes had always been fascinating to Jackson, it was just the execution that was sometimes faulty… Jackson kept his eyes on the professor as he demonstrated, and could see the concentration. When it was their time to give it a go, Jackson cleared his throat and checked his runes. Kenaz was in fact in his right hand, so it was time to start chanting. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaun!" To no one’s disbelief, nothing happened. Admittedly, he was more trying to make sure he got the chanting correct. He repeated himself again and again until he finally memorized the chant. “Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnn… Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnn!” It took many (MANY) tries, but eventually, Jackson started seeing the glow from the rune seemingly increase and then he validated it about a chorus later when the candle finally grew brighter. A smile crept onto his face, and Jackson continued to chant, doing his best not to break the focus level. “Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnnnnn…”
Thank Merlin. And now that THAT was done it was time to… oh, yes, that’s right. Jackson put the Isa stone in his right hand and began the process again. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i… Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i…” and on and on he went. He was getting pretty good at holding his focus, only breaking it once because of an itch on his neck that wouldn't go away on its own. Finally, his Isa rune began to glow as well, and Jackson couldn't help but smile as he saw the flame diminishing. Thank Merlin...

Kaira nodded as the Professor spoke and made notes. Wow, runes were something. Did she want to ignite or extinguish? Hmm..she decided to ignite. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she chanted.
Nothing happened. Maybe she had to focus a little more. She put all of her mind into the rune and chanted again.

Patrick grinned at the compliments on his rune work. He had come a long way from his first term as a rune student. Back then he was always trying to be the best now he just let the magic do the hard work. Looking at the split in the room he figured he'd go for team Isa, it was easier for him to dim the candle than it had been for him to make the candle flame grow.
Taking a deep breath he focused his energy and mind on the rune. He held the rune the right way and began the galdr," Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i" he watched as one of the flames began to dim. He repeated the galdr once more. He watched as one of the students on the other side brought a flame higher. He decided to focus on that one this time around ready to dim the flame.

| Team Kenaz Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight Abra nodded at Professor Flamel's words of encouragement, though he might have coloured slightly in the cheeks at realising his shortcomings had been noticed. He knew it wasn't exactly his own fault, not entirely, he just had a brain that couldn't remember things as well as everyone else seemed to and had to put a lot more effort into stuff like this. The part where it was his fault was where he didn't put in that extra effort, as he found it hugely unfair that he even needed to. But you know. The whys and wherefores were kind of neither here nor there when it came to actually getting the activity done.
Abra did keep trying, and the more he chanted the galdr to himself, the easier he found it to not keep glancing into his textbook. It was like learning lines for a part (something else he didn't exactly find easy, though he still managed it), and once he looked at it like that, it got a little easier. Though he knew that after this lesson he would likely just forget it again, pretty soon the galdr had stuck in his memory, and he could focus a little more on his intent. Before long, the rune in his hand had started to glow, but he hadn't made any noticeable progress with his candle. But then it was time to move onto the next activity.
... Okay. Well. Maybe if he stuck to using Kenaz, he might actually get it to work enough to really help his team out. That was what Abra was hoping at least; it would be a little embarrassing if he, a seventh year and prefect to boot, ended up being a total dead weight for the Team Kenaz.
When they were told to go, Abra found one extinguished candle and, without even using his textbook this time, began chanting the galdr while holding the runestone in his left hand, focusing as hard as he could on the magical properties of the rune and what he wanted the outcome to be. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko... kun kan kin ken kon... ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnnnn..." Again and again he repeated the galdr, no longer having trouble with it now that he'd been focused so hard on trying to remember it, and eventually the rune glowed and the candle sparked into life, a small flame appearing and slowly growing. He moved along to another extinguished candle.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Viv Awning First Year | Team Kenaz Vivienne read her friend's replies. When the teacher clapped his hands, she jumped. She was very amazed at how the candles flickered. Vivienne chose Kenaz. She stood up and walked over to the door. She was excited for Tug of War. She used to play it with her sister all the time. Conjuring flames? Oooh, this was gonna be interesting. Wandless magic was her weakness. Did she hear test? Oh god no! She remembered the key rule her mama had taught her: pretend it's your worst enemy, Vivienne. |

Jackson was finally starting to feel more confident with his runework. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i… Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i…” Not that he had a preference between ice and fire really, but in this particular case... WINTER IS COMING!! "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i… Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i…” He watched proudly as he watched a flame extinguish. Yes!! He continued his chanting, keeping his focus on each candle in turn.

OOC: Due to the passing of a family member and needing to catch up on work matters due to having to make arrangements, I needed to close my lesson prematurely. I sincerely apologize for this and appreciate your understanding.
For purpose of headcanon and the like, here is how the lesson would have concluded: The combined forces of both teams had a more profound affect than when everyone was practicing the two galdrs independently. Those of Team Isa managed to make their side of the room significantly colder and even caused frost to appear on the windows and walls, whereas Team Kenaz brought quite a bit of warmth into the room and likely produced beads of sweat to form on a number of students' foreheads. Both sides were equally matched, the energies battling each other and taking turns in overpowering the other. In the end, Team Isa managed to pull ahead by a number of candles.
Professor Flamel would have declared Team Isa the winner for this activity, but quickly prompted the final question of the lesson: "In what scenarios would the use of these runes come in handy, besides controlling the flame of a candle?" Various responses could have been given. Isa could provide an obstacle to stop someone or something, be a good alternative for freezing spells or Petrificus Totalus, could be used to preserve something in a frozen state for long periods of time; Kenaz could provide light and warmth in the darkness, set something ablaze as a diversion, be used as an alternative to fire spells during a duel if one's wand was taken or snapped in two; both combined could be used to counter runic wards and so on.
Afterward, Flamel would give everyone a homework assignment that is due in a week. Students will be asked to practice invoking Isa and Kenaz energies around the castle and school grounds. At least five attempts should be made and brief reflections of each attempt is to be logged on parchment. It will be expected that students document where was the attempt made, what rune energy was invoked, what the effect was, etc. Class would then be dismissed.
