| | | Aether Alcove
There is a hush to the air here in the Aether Alcove, as though it hangs slightly apart from the rest of the castle. The silence here is not heavy, but expectant...broken only by the scratch of a quill across parchment, the faint rustle of vellum charts shifting in a draft, or the gentle clink of runestone against runestone. Tucked into a windowed corner at the end of the corridor beside the Ancient Runes classroom, the alcove's tall glass windows stretch upward into the ceiling, framing sky beyond. Through them a shifting light filters in, spilling across the stone floor and carefully arranged workstations. That light strikes hidden sigils in the flagstones at certain moments around twilight, causing faintly etched runes to glow and reveal a short illuminated path that leads to a recessed stone bay window.
This bay, serving as an Observatory Desk, is strewn with vellum star charts, celestial globes, and enchanted astrolabes. Each instrument is etched with bindrunes that shimmer faintly in response to moonlight and any students who tamper too much with the astrolabes often find the devices spinning of their own accord, locking onto star positions not due to rise for centuries—or worse: showing alignments that do not exist on any known chart.. Nearby, a well-worn Rune Casting Mat of dark leather is spread across the floor in front of the sweeping windows that overlook the castle grounds. The mat itself is ringed with circles and constellations for readings not performed in isolation, but in tandem with planetary and celestial motions. On the rare occasion, a rune cast onto the mat flares with such intensity it sears its outline into the leather, leaving a mark that stubbornly refuses to fade—remnants of which you may be able to see if you look closely enough, though only a mystery awaits those trying to see just which runes left their shadows where.

| ~explooooring and OPEN *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! To say Marina García Massey was curious was perhaps the understatement of the century, because she definitely wasn’t supposed to be here. At least… she didn’t think she was. The Aether Alcove had that hidden, “ASK BEFORE ENTERING” kind of feel .... buuuuuut it also wasn’t locked, so technically how could it possibly be against the rules?
It was also this very quality of this place that had her moving further into te room. Completely in awe of the tall glass windows stretching all the way into the ceiling, and the shifting light spilling across the floor - she barely kept her gasps in as she looked around, “This is so cool,” she whispered to herself.
And then..... the table full of enchanted astrolabes happened. Leaning closer, her blue eyes sparkled as she tapped one of them gently with her fingertip. The thing spun so fast it nearly toppled off its stand, and in her scramble to steady it, she clipped an inkwell with her elbow. The crash echoed like thunder, black ink splattering ....everywhere. “Oh no, no, no, no—” she whispered frantically, dabbing at the spill with her sleeve, which naturally only made it worse. The ink bled into neat lines and constellations of the charts, turning them into a messy black blob. The astrolabe, meanwhile, was still spinning wildly, whirring like it was possessed.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | *steals* Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo You’d think by this point Cat would experience more certainty about her location in the castle. You would, in fact, be wrong. She knew she was (probably) on the sixth floor. She knew (with ninety-two percent certainty) which staircase would take her to the common room. What she did not know, however, was where that noise was coming from.
Well, she knew which direction it was coming from. So she followed it. And what greeted her was…
Messy.
She scrunched her face all up as she took in the scene. There was a girl, a lot of charts with a lot of ink, and a wildly spinning something that Cat couldn’t take her eyes off of. “What is that??”

| us too, us too *ahem* astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf As space like the Aether Alcove was on in which the air itself carried a sacred kind of silence, and when that hush was broken, the Alcove itself seemed to draw him toward the disturbance.
He arrived in the doorway in the unfortunately aftermath - ink spidered across vellum like a spreading rot, swallowing constellations whole, while an astrolabe spun itself into a manic frenzy with its bindrunes flashing and snapping against alignments that had no business existing. And there, in the middle of it all two young students.
Why couldn't it have been Peeves? "That is an astrolabe. An instrument used to measure and track celestial or magical currents...and right now it seems very unhappy with you both." Cox exhaled slowly as a measured sigh as his flexed wrists folded themselves in front of him. "Congratulations, you've just turned the Alcove into a Rorschach blot." His voice was flat with a dryness that through the charged air as easily as a knife. The astrolabe stilled mid-spin with a sharp snap of his right fingers, his left index pressing firmly just below his right elbow.. His eyes moved from the ruined star maps to the girls without softening. "The Alcove is most certainly not a playground. You may consider yourselves fortunate that the runes in the flagstones did not react to your blundering or we would be having a much more complicated conversation." He stepped inside the room, his posture seeming to straighten with each stride. He did not see a need to inquire what happened here or why - the results spoke for themselves plenty. "You two are far too green for magical shortcuts. Roll up your sleeves and start undoing your enthusiastic destruction - I’ll decide on point deductions and detentions based on your effort."
Welcome to Hogwarts, first years, where wonder meets consequence.

| Dun dun dunnnn *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Yikes.
Marina’s sleeve was already a lost cause, smeared so black - she would probably need to wash it for a week to get it off. At the sound of a new arrival, she looked up, blinking at the wide-eyed question.
“Oh, this?” She pointed at the astrolabe like she hadn’t nearly knocked it across the room. “It’s… supposed to not be doing that.” A quick grin followed, lopsided but genuine. But then she didn't have to explain anything anymore because then came a very distinct voice from the doorway --- dry and maybe rude? Marina winced before even turning, shoulders rising like she’d been caught with her hand in one of her mum's special biscuit tin. “I swear, Professor, it wasn’t on purpose.” She tugged at her ink-soaked sleeve, “I was just looking, next thing I know, the thing’s acting like it wants to summon the moon. Which, to be fair, would’ve been impressive.” She grinned, though she immediately tried not to seeing his face. It was very difficult to not shut up when in trouble.
Pushing her hair from her face with the back of her hand, she crouched down to gather the dripping charts, giving the other girl with her a quick conspiratorial whisper as she did: “Just met and we’re already in trouble together. Lovely.”
Straightening, she gave the professor a small, sheepish smile. “She didn't do anything though, professor. It was all me. I'll clean it up. Let her go.”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo “Wh-” Cat gaped at the adult professor man, mouth opening wordlessly before snapping shut again. On the one hand, she noted: astrolabe. Celestial or magical currents. Very unhappy. On the other hand, though…
She folded her arms indignantly. “I didn’t-” But he was still talking. And being wrong. She had just been merely curious and the room was in this condition when she entered it. The blame was completely unfair- “Detention?” Her voice came out pitched an octave higher than usual. Her mind felt like it whirled about as fast as that astrolabe had been spinning. Belatedly, it began to process the man’s words. She rolled her sleeves up as instructed.
How was she supposed to start undoing the destruction? It wasn’t even her destruction. When the other girl ducked down Cat did as well, mostly because it was something to do and maybe the professor man would think she was helping. It was the girl’s words, though, that really caught Cat’s attention. A smile tugged at one corner of her lips. She was right. Cat didn’t even know her name, and here they were, being threatened with detention and point deductions together.
She straightened up, standing as tall as she could (which probably just looked like she forgot how to stand correctly for a moment and was over-extending her back) and looked at the professor. Somewhere near his eyes. “I may have spooked it.” The astrolabe. “And made it worse.” She had no idea if that was possible, but she wouldn’t let the other girl take all the blame for this.
Still… she had no idea how to get ink cleaned up. So she began… wiping it with her sleeve, as the other girl had done, except Cat started with the table itself, not the charts.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Cox found it… inconveniently difficult not to be impressed by the way in which each girl took his arrival and chastising in stride. In his experience, the majority scattered blame like ash in the wind, eager to let anyone else choke on it. These two, however, absorbed the heat like powdered asphodel and wormwood and instead of fizzing apart in a cloud of smoke and excuses bound cleanly together without much protest.
He somehow managed to contain the scowl that wanted, desperately, to spread across his face. A task that was made absolutely herculean when he saw the way in which ink was being smeared further into the wood grain of the work table. "If your instinct when confronted with destruction is to compound it... then I recommend you consider another subject entirely. One where the consequences of wiping things with your sleeve are considerably less volatile," he warned dryly as his steps swept across the room towards a cabinet from which he pulled a pair of metal buckets, one of which contained various cleaning supplies. "You will clean this mess properly. With rags, my special cleaning solution, and water. Not with fabric that I assume your guardians paid good money to clothe you with."
He noted, with silent disapproval, that self-sacrifice for show was not admirable. Accepting responsibility with grace was one thing; putting on a performance for sympathy was another...and he was not yet certain which he had before him. "Neither of you are hostages in need of being let go. You can walk away if you like, but remember: as above, so below... as effect, so cause. And consequences still need to be faced. That said... I think the two of you may be proving you’re capable of handling them in a way that doesn't require detention."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Marina García Massey Gryffindor First Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Adrian García Massey Slytherin Fourth Year x5
| *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Marina glanced sideways and caught the way the other girl had gone stiff as a board, her expression breaching despair - and it made sense. The girl had simply been at the wrong place, at the wrong time. And even though, they did not know each other AT ALL, Marina could feel the need to make everything right for her .... deep in her bones. So, when she finally smiled a little, amidst the lovely lecture from the professor, her face brightened in response. Leaning closer, she whispered, “I’m Marina, by the way,” like it was the most natural thing in the world to be trading names while knee-deep in ink and trouble.
The warm sound of their professor brought her back to the situation at hand though. She was sure she would be sitting at the back in his class and keeping her head down.
One cause and effect .... or err --- effect and cause later -- Marina gracefullybent to take one of the buckets, rolling her sleeves higher without hesitation, and ruining them more in the process, “Special solution, rags, water. Got it. I am sure we'll get this all cleaned up in no time" she grinned, never shy of some hard work -- "....even if I’ll probably have to write home for a new set of robes after this” she grinned.
Glancing up at him as she dipped the first rag, she added, because naturally she had to speak more and make it worse, “And ... did you really say ~Special Cleaning Solution~ of your own making? Honestly, this feels like it should be its own class. Care of Magical Spills. I’d pass that one.” Adrian was wrong. She was plenty funny.
....and she was sure the professor will find her funny as well.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo All things considered... Cat figured this situation could be much worse than it was. She glanced down at her (definitely ruined) sleeve, considering the professor's words. Consider another subject. Truthfully, she had not the faintest idea of what this subject was. The star charts and astrolabe told her that it was possibly astronomy, but she was fairly certain (although at the moment she didn't feel confident at all) that there was a specific Astronomy Tower.
Either way, she would most certainly be investigating this further. She was currently completely convinced that this man was terrifying and quite particular about his space and she needed to be on the lookout for his class. Classes. She wasn't sure about that, either. Too much to keep track of this early in her school career.
As the other girl - Marina - began working with the buckets, after a quick nod to show the professor that she understood what he was saying (mostly), Cat joined in. She shoved her sleeves up again as much as she could and dipped her rag into her own bucket just as Marina spoke up again.
Cat let her head fall into her hand, blatantly face-palming at the girl's words.
(She was also fighting a laugh but that wasn't important.) "Shhhh," She hissed, splashing a bit of liquid from the bucket in her haste and tilting her head so that Marina could see her BIG WIDE CAUTIONARY eyes and hopefully the professor couldn't. "He doesn't seem super able to find the humor in this right now." And Cat's chivalry was quicky waning. She would help the other girl clean but she was not willing to stick her neck out again when they had only just narrowly missed the detention thing.

| Us tooooo :3 YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers Kara had picked up ancient runes this year as an elective, at the bequest of her mother insisting that it was a worthy subject to study. Which led to her exploring this wing of the castle and alluring alcove near the classroom. Hearing the commotion within had the third year captivated and curious enough to want to see what was going in, only regretting it a moment too late.
She saw the Professor, one of serious demeanor, and two first years, one of which she recognized as one of the new lion cubs for this term. Along with spilled ink? "I suppose now is not a good time for vellum star charts." Which should probably have been her cue to turn around, yet there was the urge to assist the younger girls in their cleanup as well, even if it wasn't her mess to cleanup. Perhaps it was that remorse of her own incidents as a first year and having two hufflepuffs and professors there to guide her.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf He certainly did not miss the sideways whispers nor the exchange of names as though this were some sort of social club rather than a wreckage site. He also did not miss the far too quick grin paired with the commentary about a 'Care of Magical Spills' class. His brow arched, the sort of precise movement that implied he was deciding whether the words were worth acknowledging at all.
"An interesting observation, Miss García Massey," he said at last, voice low and clipped, "I’m sure the Potion Accident Response Team over at the Ministry would be glad of the extra hands. Perhaps a future career path for the both of you." His tone carried just enough dryness to leave it unclear whether it was compliment or not. His gaze flicked briefly toward Miss Webb, catching the wide-eyed, cautionary look she thought she was concealing and he almost.... almost... let the corner of his mouth twitch into a smile.
He busied himself instead with adjusting the alignment of the astrolabe that had been disturbed, setting its axis properly back into place before giving the girls another measuring look. They were working. They had not quit, nor argued, nor created even more of a mess. That counted for something.
Cox’s gaze shifted toward the new arrival, his expression unreadable save for the faint tightening at the corner of his mouth. "If you can locate a chart that hasn’t been baptized in ink, you’re welcome to it, Miss Walsh. But for the moment, the Observatory Desk is an ink hazard zone. Best to occupy yourself elsewhere until these two have restored it to a serviceable state." Which turned his attention back to the pair of first years, to whom he offered the slightest hint of an approving nod. "See that you finish what you've begun. You may leave once the ink is off stone and parchment alike. If you're clever, you'll leave this classroom with more than clean sleeves."
He did not elaborate, nor did he feel needed to. If either girl had a grain of sense, they would understand: the lesson here was not exclusively in spills and rags, nor was work before them was not punishment, but practice in responsibility.

| *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Marina glanced sideways just in time to catch Cat’s giant warning-eyes and had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from giggling. She really shouldn't be enjoying this so much. But she very much was - so she dipped her rag again, before scrubbing at the stone in small, circular motions.
And then the professor spoke again ......... and that was just an invitation really. “Potion Accident Response Team,” she echoed under her breath with a grin, clearly unable to resist. “Imagine me showing up to save the day with just a rag and a bucket. Whole Ministry wing goes up in smoke, and I’m like -don’t worry everyone, I’ve trained for this.” She swung the rag lightly like it was a heroic banner before dutifully dropping it back onto the inky stone. “But no thank you, professor - still trying to figure out what I want to do in life”She had ... pretty big shoes to fill after all. “What about you, do you know what you are going to do in life?” She asked Cat, because clearly the professor had it figured out --- no point asking him.
And then .... there were more people showing up.
And even though the professor had the thing covered, Marina was polite enough to smile at the girl, “Hello, and no it's not”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo SCRUB SCRUB SCRUB.
Cat paused in her very intense scrubbing when the professor mentioned the Potion Accident Response Team. She tilted her head slightly, and this time couldn't control the smile when Marina (of course) completely took off with the idea. "You'd be good at it," she said without thinking. Really though, based on totally limited knowledge, the girl appeared to be able to clean messes as well as she created them. That was a compliment.
She quickly dropped her gaze back down to the task at hand, scrubscrubscrubbing at the regretfully damaged wood before she answered. "I just found out about the wizarding world." Like, quite literally when her letter came. "So..." She trailed off, loathe to admit when she didn't know something. The truth was, though, that she had no idea what magical people even could do for jobs. Besides teach, obviously. Her dad was a chemist. The muggle kind.
And there was another person. Cat glanced between Marina and the professor and the new (older?) girl. "An ink hazard zone indeed," she mumbled, leaning on the desk a bit to scrub at a particularly deep ink stain. "Come on in," she said louder, to the new girl, though she recognized that her permission was not needed or helpful at this point. "I'm Cat." Might as well be civil if they were all going to spend some time together. Had she even introduced herself to Marina yet?
Oops.
She paused in her scrubbing once again as a thought occurred to her. "Sir," she started, glancing at the professor, "If we were to - not that we are, because you said so, but if we were to use magic to clean this up, like, in the future, how would we do that?" She was resourceful, see. And also she hated cleaning with a passion. There had to be an easier way with magic, or no one would care about doing magic.

| YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers Kara fought to urge to crack a smile at the Professor stating things were baptized in ink. Whoever said he didn't have a sense of humor was seriously disturbed. She would have turned herself back around, since he said to come back another time and her housemate too said it was not a good time.
Nodding as she considered her options, she also considered the question that the younger lioness had posed on what she wanted to do with life. If you asked her that when she was a first year, she probably would have had zero clue. But now, somehow maybe Professional Gobstones was becoming a possibility? Still no real clue but perhaps in the next couple years clarity would take form.
It was the third person though who seemed to beckon her to come on in. Cat. "Perhaps, even though it's not my mess, I can help?" she looked to Professor Cox for reassurance that it was okay. "I was going to spend the free hour in here anyway, so I don't mind."

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Merlin. He potentially had seven years of this ahead of him with these two. And, surely, they would not be the last.
The corner of his mouth twitched... whether from amusement or restraint was difficult to tell... as Miss García Massey brandished her rag like a flag. "I am certain whatever it is you do decide to do, you will not be short on enthusiasm," he noted dryly. He folded his arms across his front, weight settling on one foot as he leaned against one of the tables with his hip, his gaze traveling to the growing patch of clean stone. "Ink and intent," he murmured after a beat to himself. "Two things that cling where they shouldn’t...though not nearly as horribly as glitter."
The quiet was soon cut by Miss Webb's question and his attention shifted from inspecting a recently cleaned area to the young Ravenclaw. "A fair question. There are, of course, spells that would make short work of this. Scourgify, for instance, if cast with precision, or Tergeo for smaller, contained messes. If one’s aim is domestic neatness only." He shifted his weight again, moving his arms behind his back as though lecturing before a class. "However," he continued with a very obvious shift in tone, "spells are not perfect solvents. In the realm of potions — or anything involving magical reagents — they do not dispel the essence, merely relocate it. Magic always, always leaves traces and that is why, Miss Webb, I prefer cloth and effort over convenience and wand dependency. It is the difference between tidiness and cleanliness."
He might have left it there if not for Miss Walsh's offer, one that was objectively kind and earnest, but also entirely unnecessary. "Your impulse to help is... commendable, Miss Walsh," he replied, the faint hesitation in his tone suggesting he was choosing his words with care. His expression remained impassive, betraying little beyond the steady patience of a man who had seen far too many well meaning interferences. "But you are quite right, it is not your mess, and therefore, it is not your burden. There's a certain discipline in allowing consequences to rest where they belong." He shifted his weight slightly, gaze following the rhythmic movement of their cloths and showing great restraint for any waving that may occur. "Miss García Massey and Miss Webb have a strong handle on things."
Both in the the scrubbing itself and the quiet lesson unfolding in the act.

| omgggg im sorry for being so lateeee *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Marina had been scrubbing away with the kind of determination that could power an entire Quidditch match, her wavy hair frizzing in every possible direction and a faint streak of ink on her cheek that she hadn’t noticed yet. And then the Professor mentioned glitter and instantly allll her concetration went out the window and she snorted. “Glitter’s worse than ink, sir, definitely. My cousin once brought home a sparkly valentine card and we were still finding it in the bathroom a year later.” Obviously she had a story about it, she always had a story about it all.
When Cat admitted she’d just found out about the wizarding world, Marina’s head popped up, eyes bright. “Wait, really? That’s kind of amazing. So this is all brand-new for you?” she asked, her tone a mix of awe and curiosity. “You must be learning so much. I mean - well, we all are, but you’ve basically walked into an entirely different universe!” She wasn't even sure if she could imagine a life ... not with magic. It ...was insane. But she kept those thoughts to herself, because the professor was speaking again, and explaining the difference between spells and effort, Marina looked up again, nodding like she was definitely absorbing that and not at all distracted by the way his sleeves caught the light when he gestured.
When the professor started speaking to the older girl again, Marina went back to the patch of stone she was working on -- and thankfully it was mostly clean… aside from a faint, stubborn blotch. She tried rubbing harder, only managing to smear it into a slightly larger blob. “I think this one’s developing a personality,” she muttered to Cat, pointing at the blob with the corner of her rag. “It’s judging me. Can ink stains do that?”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo To be quite clear, Cat had no idea what the difference was between clean and domestic neatness. She nodded though, not wanting the Professor to think that she wasn’t listening. Or understanding (even though she wasn’t). When he went on to further explain why the use of elbow grease (as her parents said) was superior to magic in these cases, things clicked a bit more for her. “Where does magic relocate it to?” She asked, curiosity getting the better of her again. Was there some place that was just, like, full of magical messes?
Scrubscrubscrub.
Cat turned her attention back to Marina, smiling a bit at the girl’s surprise. “It’s all brand new,” she confirmed. “It’s a lot to learn, yeah. Dad gave me a bit of a summary, but it turns out that there is a lot more to the magical world than one guy can explain in a few weeks.” It was probably unclear by her words how Cat felt about this, considering she herself still had no idea.
She took a half-step back, examining her own handy work on the table. It was… clearer. Dipping her rag into the cleaning solution again, she started on an untouched stain. At Marina’s next words, Cat looked up and giggled. “Possibly.” Again, magic. “It’s taunting you. Show it what you’re made of.” Or what the cleaning solution was made of (or something).

| YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers Welp. Apparently as much as she would have loved to have stayed to chat some more with the younger girl - Cat, the Professor was effectively throwing her out without actually saying as much. Not her mess to clean up. Basically that she had no choice but to leave. "I guess, I'll ... Just see myself out then." Kara said, making a note of Cat's appearance to seek her out later. From what she could deduce, the girl was muggleborn and maybe also child of a single parent like herself? She had only mentioned a father so it was a possibility.
Although she backed slowly out, curious of the answer about where magic relocated to when it was vanished. Perhaps in her slow departure, she'd overhear Professor Cox's explanation.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Glitter. Of course. He suspected there was still some of it lodged between the stones or tucked into the woodwork of the Ravenclaw dormitories. The Memory Book, regrettably, had fallen victim as well — and he had very nearly reconsidered his moral stance against Vanishment for the sake of removing the glitter that clung to his hands. "Yes, I suspect there are enchantments older than this castle still trying to expel it," he muttered dryly, adjusting his lean against the nearest table.
The bathroom though - that was truly sinister.
He preferred silence during cleaning as conversation often led to distraction which then usually lead to bigger messes. Still, the work was being done, so he saw no reason to interrupt... though the urge to point out that they could clean faster if they conserved their energy remaned. He said nothing, merely watched over the two as he thumbed through a nearby tome, checking for errant blotches when Miss Walsh excused herself. Evidently, every chart had been marred by the first years’ earlier chaos — unsurprising. He inclined his head toward the girl in polite acknowledgment as she lingered by the door.
His attention drifted from the cover of another tome towards Miss Webb. Again, the urge to redirect that energy into cleaning was strong and the lesson herself and her Gryffindor friend were meant to be learning very different from magical theory. No harm in appeasing curiosity. However, though this particular concept would be a lot for a first year to grasp and even more so for a first year who had just been thrust into this world and lifestyle as a muggleborn.
"A fair question, Miss Webb. You’ll likely hear the phrase 'into non-being, which is to say, everything' before long," he explained with the lightest touch of sarcasm. "A romanticized way of putting it, but if we strip away the metaphor what it means is this: matter and magic are not destroyed, only displaced. The energy that composes an object is converted back into raw potential." He paused, gauging whether either of them were following, before nodding toward the dark water in their buckets and the ink-soaked cloths. "Nothing doesn’t really exist, you see. Everything in our world is made of very tiny bits and that includes magic. When you Vanish something, all those tiny bits come apart and spread back into the world, like a drop of ink in water."
Ahem.
A short clearing of his throat followed. That was enough of a lecture for one afternoon. Delving into atomic structure and diffusion could wait until they weren’t ankle-deep in soap and consequence or were continuing their curiosity into NEWT level studies.
"And," he added, returning his gaze to the tome in hand, "see to it that the two of you don’t offend any more ink stains."
Why he’d indulged Miss García Massey’s theory about sentient stains, he couldn’t quite say. Perhaps the Ravenclaw’s inquisitiveness had left him in a more charitable mood.

| *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Marina glanced up just in time to see the older girl, Kara, backing toward the door. The Gryffindorr gave her a small, understanding smile and lifted her hand in a faint wave. “See you around,” she offered quietly, before turning back to the table.
When Professor Cox answered Cat’s question, Marina paused mid-scrub, the cloth dangling loosely from her fingers as she listened. Of course, the answer had her blinking a few times, mouth parted in fascination. Into non-being, which is to say… everything. It sounded like something straight out of her mum's poetry books. Oooo - did he like poetry too? “That’s... actually kind of pretty,” she declared, before glancing down at the murky bucket between them. “So technically we’re just… spreading the mess into the .. air?” Her nose wrinkled. “That feels unfair to the world.”
She scrubbed at another stubborn bit of ink, mock glaring at it -- for testing her continued, respectful patience. Lowering her voice to Cat with a small, warm smile, she added, “When we’re done here, we need to go treat ourselves to something fun.. one that doesn’t involve buckets.”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo Cat lifted her gaze from her work to the older girl. She gave a small wave, trying to note something about her appearance that would help Cat remember her if they ran into each other again. It would probably be nice to (kind of) know someone older, who was also nice, and apparently willing to help.
She tried to take in everything that the professor was saying. She really did. As soon as he started talking about everywhere and nowhere, though, her mind startled whirling with the possibilities. She knew basic physic ideas, though, thanks to her dad, and it made sense to her that even in magic, things couldn’t be created or destroyed.
It was somewhat comforting, actually.
Speaking of ink in water. She turned her attention to her bucket as Marina spoke up, eyeing the amount of ink that was now in the cleaning solution. Soon it would be useless. “Maybe that’s why it’s better to clean things this way.” Maybe the professor had said as much, but it was now it was Cat’s idea thank you.
She giggled softly at Marina’s worry about being unfair to the world, and then Professor’s Cox’s advice to not offend any more ink stains. Did he know he was funny? (It appeared as if he did not know that he was funny). “Nice ink stain,” she said gently as she scrubbed as hard as she could on the table, “Very pretty ink stain.”
She paused her compliments only to stage whisper to Marina, “I agree. More fun, less ink.” But don’t let the ink hear you.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Professor Cox did not, in fact, enjoy poetry.
He found most of it to be self-indulgent nonsense. Words twisted into shapes meant to sound profound but rarely saying anything at all and yet still managed to be too intrusive.
He set the tome aside with deliberate care, brushing an invisible speck of dust from its cover before continuing the faintest exhale left him. "You’re not entirely wrong, Miss García Massey. In a way, you are redistributing the mess. The world can be remarkably good at absorbing our mistakes, magical or otherwise, but that doesn’t mean one should make a habit of testing its patience nor rely on such thoughts as absolute." He supposed she could call that thought 'pretty' if she insisted - to him it was just logic.
There was just a touch too much whimsy for his liking between the duo. Complimenting ink stains earned Miss Webb a sharp cock of the brow and a look that was akin to smelling someone who had stepped in dragon dung. Not worth the effort telling her to cease the peculiar behavior, however, seeing as she was sticking to the task. Both of them were.
He glanced down at the gray water in their buckets briefly as he began to pace about the alcobe. "Perhaps we’ll call this an early introduction to environmental responsibility."
It was often amusing how students, particularly of the first year variety, were convinced that adults were so hard of hearing that they could not hear modestly hushed voices from a close proximity. Some of his colleagues might even find the innocence cute - he found it mildly insulting. "Taking responsibility for one’s actions," he remarked dryly without looking up from a nearby shelf he had occupied himself with while the pair conspired quite literally under his nose, "is rarely observed to be fun. Suppose that is precisely why it’s called a consequence, not a celebration. A small relief to know the two of you grasp that concept."

| *sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO! Marina bit back a laugh at Cat’s stage whisper, pretending to focus on scrubbing the last stubborn trace of ink near the table’s edge. The grayish sheen of the cleaning water was evidence enough that their efforts had nearly run their course, the stain now little more than a faint shimmer beneath her sponge. She sat back on her heels with a quiet sigh, brushing a damp strand of hair from her forehead. “Yes, sir. Lesson learned. I’ll be sure to take full responsibility next time an inkpot decides to test gravity.” Her gaze flickered briefly toward Cat, passing her a small grin before looking back down at the now-clean space, giving it one final swipe for good measure. “Though, for the record,” she added under her breath, just loud enough for Cat to hear, “this one might deserve a small celebration.”
Then, glancing back up at the professor, she offered a tentative half-smile, “Environmental responsibility achieved, Professor. Should we consider the ink forgiven, or is there a next stage in repentance?”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cathryn “Cat” Myranda Webb Ravenclaw First Year | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo “Oh, it definitely does.” Cat whispered back at Marina. She wasn’t aware of what they could do for a celebration here, but it was earned all the same. Because… was that all the ink? Had they done it?? Cat almost (almost) grinned when she realized that once her stubborn ink was gone and Marina was finished with hers, they were almost actually finished with the task unless there was ink hiding somewhere, which she wouldn’t put past the ink itself.
She did end up actually snorting, though, at Marina’s comment. Was that sarcasm, or was she being serious? Cat schooled her features into a neutral expression as quickly as she could, not wanting to get in trouble for laughing at Marina’s maybe-maybe-not joke. “I think we got it all,” she said a little too loudly, helpfully providing back-up to Marina’s question about further repentance. She pointed at her most recent table to prove her point, only to catch sight of her ink-stained sleeve, which she quickly hid behind her back. She didn’t need that reminding Professor Cox of the original mess.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf He did not immediately answer either of them. Instead, he drifted back toward the worktables with all the inevitability of a gathering storm. His hands clasped neatly behind his back, he began a slow circling inspection of their efforts. He paused here and leaned in there, but issued nothing more than a series of thoughtful ominous little 'hm's. A low and drawn out 'hm' when he tilted the bucket. A sharper 'hm' when he bent close enough to examine the wood grain. A quiet begrudgingly approving '...hm' when he straightened again.
He said nothing of their whispered celebration, nor about Miss Webb's suspiciously hidden sleeve, nor with regards to Miss García Massey whimsy speculation about repentance - though the flick of his eyes towards both of them suggested he missed none of it.
At last, he stepped back and gave a single crisp nod. "Acceptable." He stepped towards the pair. He would, of course, be returning later to ensure the room was thoroughly clean as he did the end of each day - sometimes with a house elf or two accompanying him, more oftentimes solo - just in case. It was a lot to expect students to know the true meaning of cleanliness. He circled back to the the tome he'd been reorganizing on the shelf, dusted an imaginary speck from its cover, and finally faced them properly.
"Ink, at least not this ink, cannot repent. Students, however, can." His gaze shifted between the two of them as he settled into a slightly more relaxed stance, arms folded in front of him and across his chest rather than behind his back. "And that brings us to the remaining matter of detention… and the question of points. But before I assign either," he went on, voice sharpening with deliberate precision, "I require each of you to explain what you have gained from this process."
He let the word gained linger in the air with unmistakable intention. "After all," he added, his tone flattening into something perilously close to a lecture - of which this absolutely was, "in alchemy, one does not disrupt balance without offering something of equal value in return. You made quite a thorough mess. Therefore, I expect an equally meaningful understanding to have been acquired." His brows lifted by a small but ominous degree. "Do not disappoint me."
