But good. Progress was being made, he was open to the possibilities! Sensational. Finally, she could make some inroads, and it helped that he had Auror training, and was involved with the de Talone case to begin with. His insights would be valid and transferable. "Good."
"I'm not suggesting we move you away from aurorship and into security altogether..." not yet, this would be temporary until things fell into place. Unless of course, he wanted to make the move more permanent, but there was time for that later. "I was thinking of having you down as a part time Auror and part time Internal Investigations Liaison... this way we keep you on the case but can use you within the Ministry - where we do need you most.." Circe knew how de Talone and her slimeball attorney escaped, but it was at the hands of their incompetent security... or rather, their lack there of. "You'll still receive an Auror paygrade, with an additional five percent for your loyal services, and a further five percent for your move to security."
Slipping out a piece of smooth parchment, Emily slid it across the desk for Bennett to contemplate. Things always looked clearer on paper, or so she thought.

Internal Investigations Liaison: Requirements:
The successful applicant will have undergone Ministry approved security training and may have experience in other avenues of Law Enforcement. People skills are a must as this role will require interaction with many employees across the Ministry, as directed by the Head of Security, MLE Department head and at the request of the Minister of Magic. A strong knowledge Ministry law is expected in this role and discretion is a must. At least 5 OWLs or experience in a similar role are needed for this job. Role Description:
The Internal Investigations Liaison will work with investigate Ministry employees across all departments as directed. The Internal Investigations Liaison is required to undertake background checks on new Ministry Employees, investigate suspected theft or misappropriation of ministry funds or property, be well versed in loss prevention, fraud prevention, and protect the privacy of the Ministry of Magic employees. In the event of major security breaches of information and internal communications, the Liaison may be required to undertake investigations on teams or individuals involved. The Internal Investigations Liaison may be required to fulfil general security roles when necessary, as directed by the Head of Security or MLE Department Head.
Auror: Requirements:
The successful applicant must possess a thorough knowledge of magical laws and standards in regards to the Statute of Secrecy and Muggle relations, as well as pass stringent suitability tests and have no criminal record. The minimum requirement is 5 NEWTS at E level or higher in Potions, Defence against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology. Proficiency in Stealth and Tracking, Advanced Magical Combat and Concealment and Disguise as well as a minimum of five other specialist subjects studied in the three years of Auror Training is required. Pay grade is adjusted based on experience, extra training, and skill. Role Description:
Aurors participate in operations within the MLES, cooperate with other MLE divisions where required, liaise with other departments as required, meets objectives set by the MLE Department Head, executes investigations and undercover operations where necessary, and may be required to perform specialist bodyguard duty. There are various rankings within the category of "Aurors," such as (from the top down): Head Auror, Senior Auror, Auror, Junior Auror, and YATI Trainee. Aurors may move up in rankings with experience and years of service.

So he wasn't totally leaving the auror division?
That was fine with him, it would allow him the chance to see both areas of the department without making any solid decisions on moving fully or staying where he indeed already was. It made his choice not as gut-wrenching as it might have been had it truly been a complete switch. Plus on the upside of security, it allowed him to redeem himself for the slip in the courtroom, finding a way to solve the issues that lead to the two disappearances. All the while also being able to help find said disappearances.
Simon listened as Emily explained her plan, the young man occasionally nodding to show he was listening and understood what she was getting at. When talk returned to money, he accepted the paperwork for his raise and gave it a quick once over. It wasn't as if it moved his mind in one direction or another anyway. He paid more attention to the roles or rather roles he was being offered since auror was already in his job description.
He paused just a few moments more to make sure it didn't seem like he was either rushing into a decision or being torn and needing to linger. Finally he looked back up at the former head auror and smile. "You have yourself a liaison."

She could see him thinking, the wheels were turning, but his face didn't betray his thoughts, those were still a mystery. Sitting patiently, Emily thought of the rest of her day, still so much to do, she'd be lucky to get out of the office at eight.
Bennett's response got a small sigh out of her as she returned to reality. "Good man," she started, "I'll get you focusing your energy on security for the time being, I want those issues identified and resolved as soon as possible, work with the other liaisons, see how're they're progressing..." if they had progressed at all. Merlin.
Pushing her self inking quill in her colleague/employee's direction, she added a curt, "sign please." Or else he wouldn't receive his bonus till the following fortnight.

Simon took the sigh as a good sign, the thought cemented as the department head commented further. He made a mental note of what was being said, planning to head over in the direction of security once he left the office. Time was off the essence after all.
He got the hint even before she mentioned signing, the quill passed his way made it clear what was needed to make it all complete. Taking it in hand, he found the space where he to sign and placed his signature squarely in its proper spot before handing both parchment and quill back to Emily.
"Was there anything else?" he added to be sure, not simple wanting to just walk out if it wasn't. The auror moving to get back up to his feet regardless.

Another smooth transaction. Emily was pleased. She filed the parchment back in his personal records folder, and set the quill to the side of her desk, neatly in line with her in-tray.
"No... that's all. Unless you have something to add?" Otherwise they were done. Frankly she felt it had all been covered, but she paused to hear his response nonetheless. Though, judging by his rising from his seat, it appeared as though he was right to get on with it.

A clean deal and all was well. Simon was understandably pleased with the turnout seeing as he had been having mixed feelings on it before hand. The auror took her words to the negative, shaking his head as Emily turned it back to him.
"No, I do not. I was simply making sure all was well. Good day them," he said with a nod, closing the greeting in case they didn't see each other the rest of the day. With that said, Simon turned and left the office, allowing the door to close behind him once more.

Emily had raised her eyebrows in anticipation... but there wasn't anything to add. "No worries, I'll see how you're going soon." Yes, she meant checking up on, sue her, she cared about her employees and how they were doing.
The Minister didn't approve her appointment for nothing...
After seeing the door close behind Bennett, Emily rose from her seat and placed her empty glass on its tray on the cabinet and made her way over to one of the shelves. Removing a tome - which was not just for show - Emily returned it to her desk, rifled through some paged and turned her attention to an item in her in-tray. Having made some annotations in the margins and signed the document, she dropped the item in her out-tray and returned the tome to the shelf. Done.
Having cast a quick Tempus and coming the realisation that he was about to be late for his appointment with the new Department Head Skander had practically run from the lower levels, happy that his fitness regime meant that he hadn't broken a sweat or arrived for his appointment out of breath. Doing so would probably make a bad impression, almost as bad as being late. He did however slow his pace as he reached the office, taking the time to smooth out his robes and fix his hair. No need to look unkempt.
After smoothing down his robes one more time Skander walked up to the door fully and knocked, waiting for Emily's permission to enter the room.

The wall clock, coupled with her schedule planner, ha alerted her to the pending appointment. So in preparing for it, she had taken the opportunity to go over the personnel file, all the while pacing the room. Sitting for so long was starting to do her head in.
It would be a happy day once all the staff reviews were done.
Hearing a knock, Emily sauntered over to the door and urned the knob a bit, though not swinging it open. "Come on in, Beckett.." she called over her shoulder before tearing her eyes away from the file. Skander Beckett, it had a nice ring to it, a name you could repeat without getting bored. "Please take a seat..." she welcomed, gesturing to the solitary chair which was getting a workout today.
Now this one, would be interesting. While Emily was familiar with Skander, being of the same age and having worked in the same department for so long, she wasn't as well acquainted with him as she would like. His pay increase application had certainly raised a brow.
Skander pushed the door open and walked calmly, and hopefully confidently, into the office when summoned. It was slightly strange having Emily call him into the room instead of Wes but definitely something he could get used to and not a change he had any real problem with. He'd liked Emily the from the few times they'd met and he was more curious than anything to see what kind of boss she'd be, and also hopeful that she'd approve his application for a raise.
"Thank-you," Skander said, smiling briefly at Emily as he followed her instructions and took a seat in front of her desk, giving her his full attention while he waited for whatever questions she may have for him.

Department Head had its perks... entertainment was one of them.
The way her employees were coming into her office as if she'd laid out eggshells was hilarious, and the way they sat, quietly, until spoken to... it was brilliant. Truly. "Water?" she asked, in an attempt to make Beckett feel more at ease. Not that he looked uncomfortable, but still. It was all a part of her experiment too.
She supposed she ought to start her line of questioning, draw out the process and then get to the point. Emily poured herself a glass half full before addressing the prosecutor. "How are things going, Skander?" she asked casually, "Enjoying your time in MLE?"
"No thank-you," Skander replied automatically when Emily asked if he wanted water. The way she was looking at him was slightly disconcerting, and reminded him a bit of the way he looked at witnesses for the other side. As if trying to get them to break or something.
Straightening up Skander took a moment to think about his answer to the question she asked. "I've been well, and of course I enjoy working for the MLE. It wasn't where I necessarily thought I'd end up when I moved here but it's genuinely enjoyable and rewarding work for the most part," was the answer he decided on settling on. Hopefully it sounded good enough to Emily. He was hoping that his request form for the pay raise hadn't given her the impression that he was unhappy working in this department.

She'd almost anticipated the no, though she had hoped that somebody -even someone with a cool a name as Skaaaaander Beckett - would have the guts to accept her offer. It wasn't poisoned or laced with veritaserum or anything. Or was it one of those things, that made people feel as though they had to do a nervous wee? Meh. Emily made a mental note, 3 out of 3 rejections.. fascinating, it had to be a psychological thing.
"Good good," she replied, nodding at Skander's response. She wouldn't have believed him if he'd said he hated it here. MLE was clearly the best department, despite it's issues, in the Ministry. And as far as practicing law went, it couldn't get much more exciting as it did here. "de Talone case aside, is there any other reason as to why you have waited so long to request a pay increase?"
"Well, the first time it was offered after my promotion I honestly saw no need to request a pay rise as I believed the money to be adequate, also a few other times I've actually been indisposed, I'm sure you remember that terrible affliction that turned quite a few of us into zombies," Skander said, flinching slightly at the memory of that time and how sick he'd been because of it, and the general chaos it had caused. "Obviously for personal reasons requesting such a thing, and attending a meeting wouldn't have been the easiest thing in the world at that point in time. After that I also missed a good chunk of work due to sickness and family issues back in Australia and so requesting a raise when I'd not been giving my all to my work would have seemed a little presumptuous. I've also been busy with work as up until last year I was, I believe, the only Prosecutor. If not for my indisposition at other points I likely would have requested a raise at some earlier point when it was offered," He replied, shrugging his shoulders slightly as he fell silent.
It was obviously a good question, just one he wasn't entirely sure he'd been able to answer satisfactorily. He really should have gone over his reasons in his head before this meeting. Saying that he would have asked for a raise earlier if not for being indisposed probably wasn't the best answer to give. Oh well. Clearly he wasn't suited for being on the other side of an...interrogation?
"Also, I've got significantly more experience in my role now than I had when I was promoted and I feel that being more experienced means that my pay should, by rights, be greater than what I was payed when I first stepped into the position." That was probably a better reason for wanting a raise, although he was sure that he'd still be getting paid less than he was when he first transferred to the Ministry over here. Still he loved the MLE and couldn't really imagine not working in the Department anymore, no matter what the pay.

Skander, surprised her with his response. Considering he had made some valid points in his application, she hadn't expected him to elaborate on them so, eloquently as he did... though, being a prosecutor, it was only natural for him to be persuasive in speech. Bravo.
Lacing her fingers together as she listened, Emily fixed him with her gaze, nodding at the appropriate times and emitting a low "mmm" of agreement at intervals.
"I have to admit, I was impressed by your work on the de Talone case, strong closing argument... I'm only sorry it didn't receive the outcome it deserved," which was something that would be righted, soon, hopefully.
Really, there was nothing to it. This one was straight forward and easy. "Your pay increase has been granted," she announced casually, taking his file from her desk and slipping a sheet of parchment his way.

"Was there anything else?" she asked, since he was here.
"Thank-you, so am I. Although I feel more sorry for the victims than anything else. We may have worked hard on preparing the case and so be invested in the outcome but they've had to watch de Talone escape justice multiple times. That being said I'm sure the Auror's will catch up with her soon," Skander said, sounding slightly resigned, but still hopeful as he leaned forward to read the parchment she slid over to him. It was a good pay rise.
Skander was about to get up and leave when he remembered something that he should perhaps discuss with Emily. "Actually there is something I need to discuss with you. Due to the unfortunate result of the de Talone trial the Minister is apparently worried about bad press, perhaps not unnecessarily. While as an employee of the MLE I find it slightly ridiculous that the Minister wants time to be wasted on making sure the story doesn't hit the press, as a liaison I've been given instructions to ask you if there are any human interest stories to give to the press," Skander replied, his distaste for the idea present in his tone of voice. While he did understand the need for good press he didn't see how suppressing the story would do any good in the long run. It would likely only hinder their efforts to find de Talone.
"Also, I meant to mention this earlier, but due to the chaos after the escape I didn't get a chance to talk to Wes, and considering you're now the Head I suppose it may be appropriate to tell you... Miss Hollingberry mentioned in her testimony that Amarantha de Talone had been using the Book of Mysteria to steal the time of her original victims but had lost access too it. However, before she disappeared de Talone mentioned that she had found the book. I may not be an investigator but I think that finding out where the Book of Mysteria is, making sure it's still wherever it was moved too if we know where it is might help with tracking her down," Skander finished, hoping that he wasn't wasting Emily's time by mentioning the book in the first place, as he certainly knew that he was doing so by asking about the human interest story for the Prophet.

This dude, was on top of things. Brownie points for him. Though admittedly, Emily couldn't say she was thrilled with the point he raised. Human interest stories? Something to cover their failings... ugh. The look on her face probably said it all, so she didn't say anything in response, not straight away at least. Instead she tried to muster up a helpful suggestion. In the end, she couldn't really think of any. "I'll let you know if I hear anything," she let out, pursing her lips in distaste. Perhaps she'd go interrogate her staff... see if they did something that might be appropriate for the press to release.
Skander's second point was more positively received. Emily leant forward in her seat slightly, an eyebrow arched. The Book of Mysteria, huh? Ok, sure, they could definitely work with that. "Thank you, do me a favour? Stop by CMEC and see what they know about it, let them know to start gathering intell on it... I'll be there to see them shortly." It could very well be the lead they needed to find her.
"Thank-you," Skander said when Emily said she'd look out for any good story. He could tell that she was just as disgusted with the idea as he himself was. But what must be done, must be done.
Nodding slightly Skander stood from his seat, smoothing down his robes as he did so. "I'll head there straight away," he replied with a smile, taking her words for the dismissal they were and heading for the door out of the office. He was sure that Emily was busy and probably had more staff to interview about pay rises and promotions that were on offer.

Emily gave a nod at his thanks, though she didn't feel she deserved it. It was her role to support her employees... so, unless she was going above and beyond the call of duty, she didn't like to acknowledge or receive praise. It made people needy, seem weaker, it reduced standards and minimised expectations... but she didn't correct him, didn't give him a spiel on the topic... she took it in stride. He likely said it to be polite anyway, social conventions and all.
"Excellent," she added as an afterthought, watching him leave her office. It was now that she realised she'd done well with getting rid of the multitude of chairs. People seemed less inclined to stick around, that, or they were indeed more motivated by their work than she had previously thought. Both good things.
It'd been much more than two days after the orientation, but Vic guessed that Emily's office would be busy the first few weeks. He'd waited until things slowed down and their boss finally settled down before he dropped his work in the office, and instead of his usual coffee break, he headed to their boss' office.

It just so happened she was returning from such a break, only to find she had a guest.
"Vic, how nice of you to stop by," she greeted casually, stepping up beside him to lower the wards on her office before swinging the door wide open. "I was wondering when we'd get a chance to, chat."
Emily strode in ahead of him, a wave of her hand beckoning him to follow... and close the door behind himself.

The office was fancy, mahogany and had a grand desk in the middle. Vic's eyes wandered to the walls, the books and the portraits, plus the map. He went to sit on the only other chair in the office after making sure Emily had sat, and tried to find any family photographs on her desk or the wall behind her. Nope. Nothing. He had a picture of his two siblings in his office's drawer, but that was only because his office was everyone's office in their division. Heh.
"I hope I'm not taking the time of anyone or anything else. I waited until the stream of people walking into your office had thinned."

It only took a sweep of the days to-do list and appointments to confirm her time was free... for now. "You have impeccable timing it seems," she noted, slipping into her padded leather chair. It still felt foreign, as a result, she wiggled on the spot, adjusting her positioning.
She took a moment to observe him. Just observe. Her big hazel eyes followed his gaze around the space. She too scanned her shelves, desk and cabinet - eyes landing on the half pitcher of water. "Looking for something? Would you like a drink?"
"Any why wouldn't I, allow you in?" she asked, smirking.

Why wouldn't she? He had a dozen smarty replies to that one but he just suppressed a smirk and followed her in.
"I was told so, too." That he had great timing in general. Though this was all luck, he liked to take credit for it.
Anyway. Looking for something, yes actually. "Nah. I just expected the office to be a bit different." He glanced around quickly again to make sure of something before speaking out, "Family photos, a child's drawing, school certificates. You know.. anything." Vic looked back at her and it hit him again how young Emily was, yet how mature she looked. He offered her a small collected smile, unlike his usual smirks. "I guess an Auror wouldn't want to risk giving too much personal information by parading their personal possessions." He got that, half of their department were paranoid. He got used to it by now.

It was all about timing- punctuality to be more precise, this was a quality that Emily revered. There was nothing worse than people being late, or early, or otherwise interrupting when they ought not to. So it pleased her that the prosecutor ticked all the right boxes... thus far.
Different.
Emily pursed her lips to disguise a smirk. Different. She was indeed that, but not the office... she didn't feel the need to waste her time decorating or personalising the space. It was her office, not her home (even if she spent more time here than her actual home), so therefore, it could remain as it was when she inherited it. "That's certainly something to consider," she noted Vic's assessment of her paranoia. But in truth, it wasn't the sole reason for the lack of... things... "I doubt my personal possessions would offer anyone much information, regardless."
She spared herself a glance at the two solitary portraits on the wall opposite; Van and Wes. To her, they were as good as family, both having supported her and shaped her into the person she was today. The rest of the dusty portraits had been taken down, though she hadn't gotten around to storing them, they simply sat in a box in the corner of the room, out of place.
Lacing her fingers together and placing them on her lap, Emily returned Vic's smile. She was about to ask what it is he wanted, when she remembered that she had been the one to summon him... perfect. "So Vic," she started, making herself comfortable in the overbearing seat. "How do you like working here? I believe you've been with us over a year now..." She'd read his file, cover to cover, but it didn't tell her anything about how he had settled in, or what his thoughts were toward the work environment.
