You know, I actually understand what David Yates meant. I definitely felt a tension between Harry and Hermione when they were on the run together. In fact, during that scene in the graveyard, when they left together, I would have thought that they were the ones to end up together had I not already known that Hermione and Ron ended up as a couple. I'm older, and read the books with my son, so while reading, I actually never cared much about the romance aspect or who ended up with who ("shipping" as they call it?). But, I do not think this is a stretch at all.
