The Last of Us (2023 - )

The new drama tv series on HBO Max, The Last of Us, is based on a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony. The video game has two parts to it, but the story of the show (at least, for now it seems) will be following the events of the first game. And for those that aren't familiar with the game, it centers around the journey of a man, Joel, and his new charge, Ellie, as they travel across post outbreak America.

The show first started airing on Sunday, January 15th. The first season is expected to have 9 episodes - with new episodes airing every Sunday at 9pm EST.

So now that we are just now post episode 1, how many people watched?! And what did y'all think? Did you watch the show because the trailers nabbed your attention, or are you a gamer (or previous gamer!) that fell in love with the game and tuning in for the show was just a no brainer? Come share your thoughts here and let's discuss!

I've played both parts of The Last of Us on PS3 & PS4 and what helps is the games have an incredible story (not surprising from Naughty Dog in general) that a show or movie would have a good setup. I was pleased to how faithful it was and any changes only added to the episode. It's challenging for me to sit through new shows today but I'm excited for the next episode.

I've never played The Last Of Us, but I was always so intrigued by it which is why I settled with watching gameplay videos of both parts on Youtube. Would really like to try playing it! I haven't seen the entire game though because that'll take so much time lol but I'm aware of what's gonna happen, and have enough knowledge of the plot to be excited and to anticipate (read: worry about, hehe) certain things that'll unfold eventually.

I love finding new shows and series to start watching, so the series premiere was a no-brainer for me. I just had to tune in! :whaa: Having been a fan of Game of Thrones, Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie definitely gave me more reasons to check the series out. The acting and the vibes already have me hooked! I'm certain this will be another one series that I'll keep looking forward to every week.

I'm excited to see how this all comes together. My partner is invested in this game and I've only seen bits and pieces, and know what she's told be about. The storyline seems interesting and characters like Joel are my fave. Looking forward to see how HBO delivers it. :3

So I have a lot of interest in playing the games, and I did try once but like... I'm not good at gaming and the initial part was so intense I kept getting got by jump scares. My husband is a big, big fan though and has been raving about this game and how amazing the storyline is since we got together so I know a fair bit and I've gotten to watch him play portions (although Kimothy, watching on Youtube is such a good idea too!!). So I knew what to expect to happen in episode 1 and yet... there were still tears. :')

The main casting though really was such a big draw too. Pedro Pascal is one of my favorite actors and I am very invested in his portrayal of Joel already! And Bella Ramsey I've only seen in Game of Thrones, but like... Lyanna Mormont was iconic. And Ramsey did not disappoint on my expectations with this first episode! I am SO excited for tomorrow night!

Ok, I finally got far enough in the game that I felt I could watch the first episode without getting anything spoiled  So far I am VERY invested and loving how this show is coming together. They stayed true to the video game to the point that some of the scenes are literally shot for shot and I LOVE that. Pedro Pascal can do no wrong in my opinion, and Bella Ramsey IS Ellie. Like, the second she opened her mouth I bought into her portrayal of her. I'm so excited to see how the rest of the season plays out!

My husband has definitely been very excited by how true to the game everything has been so far! We just finished episode 2 so I'm going to put my thoughts in spoiler!

SPOILER!!: episode 2
Ellie's glimpses of her just being a kid this week were endearing, even if the pretending to turn was real dumb when Joel was on edge. :xd: So the Clickers SCARED THE HECK outta me :lmao: and I'm pretty sure right then is when I noped out of the video game because I could not line up a shot against them.

Also I did not love the way poor Tess went. The her being infected part was unsurprising and I liked the way she was going to have her last baddie moment but then the weird kiss thing from the infected was kinda meh.

Very excited for next week!!

Episode 2 definitely gave us the first look of what it feels to be out there in the world of TLOU, after we saw how it first started and spread in episode 1. Also, I knew what was going to happen (except for some changes/additions made to the show in comparison to the game) and it still STRESSED me out

And then EPISODE 3? My emotions???? All over the place. That 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is DESERVED.

Chelliephone 02-17-2023 01:34 AM

Episode 3 hurt and yet... somehow they injured me even more than that in episode 5??? I mean... how DARE.

Episode 4 though was really fun. I like that we got to see a little more of Joel loosening up a little bit with Ellie. And we got even more teasers about whatever Ellie's past is and ugh I cannot wait to know more. I'm sure it's explained in the game (unless they made creative difference!) but as a really poor gamer, I don't know anything of what's next. And I'm trying reaaaally hard to not ask my spouse lol

This show is just continuously going to destroy me, I can tell.

I played the game so I KNEW what was going to happen in Episode 5 but that made it so much WORSE I think? The casting for Henry and Sam was so so good. Keivonn who played Sam did such an AMAZING job and Lamar Johnson was the perfect Henry, he captured the emotions of the character so well. Their amazing performances is why I think I was hit SO hard in that episode with the feels. Like straight up sobbing as I'm watching and my BF watching me in horror lol.

It's been over a week and I'm still thinking about it!!

Chelliephone 03-09-2023 12:50 AM

So we have now passed episode 8 and uh... I think your prediction has rang true, Lissy! This show is SO good at socking you right in the feelings, and allowing you to attach to characters really quickly. I think so far my favorite secondary characters are still Sam and Henry, who you are absolutely correct the actors did an AMAZING job portraying their characters! But I've liked a lot of the others we've been introduced to as well. Tommy and his wife have given me my absolute favorite moment of the show though so far, screen cap below.

SPOILER!!: large image, im sorry

I truly cannot get over how good this show has been, but of course all good things eventually come to an end until hopefully a season 2, yeah? so this Sunday is our last episode of the season. :( How is everyone feeling overall so far? Has there been anything you didn't like about the show? Or something that you think they've done really well thus far?

itsjustjesse 05-09-2023 10:35 PM

The show has been handled so well. I am just so pleased to see that they have been giving such great care to the casting and writing of the show. I also loved how they have used the voice actors in different roles throughout the show. One of my favorite parts has also been the set design as I know that can be a really hard part as they needed it to be immersive and to harken back to the game as much as possible.

OKAY so I've been meaning to log in here for a while and share my thoughts!!!! I waited until all the episodes had come out to watch them, and I never played the game because I only ever owned an original PlayStation and original XBox and it wasn't on either of those, BUT here are my thoughts.

SPOILER!!: in no particular order
-I love Pedro Pascal.... like, this show made me love him more than Mandalorian or GoT ever did :loved:

-my fav episode is #3... it's the perfect amount of bittersweet

-this show is such an adventure and I loved every minute of it and cannot wait for s2

-I'm always asking questions and the show is always answering them

-I have no idea where s2 will go

-this show DID make me cry and also made me afraid of eating mushrooms for a few weeks during/after I watched it. I know how dumb that is but now I am a little bit afraid of mushrooms. For real.

-I cannot believe I have not yet convinced any of my friends to watch it yet when they're all HBO stans like me
