Default The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023)
Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Mrs. Charlie Weasley | Seneca's Beard | That's So Fetch

Adapted from a novel that serves as a prequel to the original The Hunger Games trilogy, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes hit theatre screens November 2023. The dystopian action film, directed by Francis Lawrence, is set 64 years before the events of the first novel/film and follows young Coriolanus Snow, his relationship with District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird, and the events that would put him on the path to becoming a tyrannical leader of Panem.

The film itself is broken into three parts, like the novel it is based on, and runs for a total of 2 hours and 38 minutes. A number of actors feature including but not limited to Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Viola Davis.

For those who have seen the film, what are your overall thoughts on the latest installment of The Hunger Games franchise? Was it a solid book-to-film adaptation? What were you impressed by? What were your favourite parts? What could have been done differently?

I've only seen the film once and will need more viewings to get more in-depth thoughts on it, but I thought it was great! The Hunger Games adaptations are fantastic imo, so I was really pleased that this one kept up the same level of quality both as a film and as an adaptation

I was really impressed with how they incorporated the amount of songs they did from the book. I wasn't sure how many, if any, of them were going to be included considering how many of them there are, and while they work in a book, it could really mess up the flow in a non-musical film to just watch a character sing. But they used them so well!

And right now, I can't think of anything I wish they had done differently. I'm sure there's something, and with repeat viewings I could probably nitpick a bunch of things, but I don't think nitpicking minor details is very helpful. The changes they made, that I can remember, I thought made sense. They streamlined some events that took longer in the book, but I think that worked for the pacing of the movie. It's already two and a half hours after all!
