| mentions galore *flops* astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Iris had reached the sort of point in the chapter where the distinction between raven shifter and ravenous traitor was becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish, which was perhaps why the sudden succession of CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!'s down the Ravenclaw table drew her attention so sharply and with daggers shooting from her rounded lenses.
Her eyes lifted just in time to watch one goblet strike another, which struck another, until the resulting chain of clanging metal travelled down the Ravenclaw table with all the subtlety of a marching band falling down a staircase. Iris watched the spectacle with the same quiet consideration she might have given an especially questionable footnote, only lowering her book once two more goblets met their demise in TJ's subsequent attempt to rectify the situation.
Her uncle was going to just love this.
She knew that the Great Hall at the start-of-term was possibly the worst place for any sort of reading, so her disgruntled features were rather unwarranted.
"I see we've begun the feast with subtlety," she muttered, the corner of her mouth twitched as she slipped her bookmark into place and closed her book with a dangerous calm.
There were quite a few new faces scattered among the familiar ones, and she offered each the sort of welcoming smile expected of a sixth year who had interrupted her reading and had a name entirely too close to a certain graduate.
"Welcome to Ravenclaw," she added, though the words were delivered with the distracted air of someone whose attention was already beginning to drift back toward the cover of her book that rested on the table. She did manage to meet the gazes of those recently Sorted before her attention wander ― Iris had manners, after all, and Lorcan in particular seemed to yearn for camaraderie.
Seven terms. It was strange to think of them that way — seven beginnings, seven endings, and countless ordinary and extraordinary moments between them. And somehow she had arrived at the zenith of them all—not a singular grand achievement, but the culmination of countless lessons, friendships, mistakes, discoveries, and moments she had once naively assumed would simply continue forever.
Iris peered over the heads of the younger students towards Mira ― noting Harvey was as bouncy as ever ― and offered the girl a small smile before glancing at the two younger students.
"Bug is a perfectly fine name," Iris remarked with a shrug, offering Lorcan and Bug another cursory glance. "If that's what he prefers to be called, I'm not entirely sure why it matters whether it's his real name or a nickname. Surely the important part is that it’s the name he’s chosen to answer to."
Hugging her book to her chest, the blonde noticed another newcomer to the table glancing over towards the Slytherin table...which was her invitation to do the same. Her fingers drifted from the spine of her book to the collar of her shirt, making sure it was popped up around her neck. It was perfectly reasonable, she told herself. The Great Hall was drafty. The evening had been a little more chilly than usual. There were countless sensible explanations for why she had developed an intense interest in keeping her uniform fastened all the way to her throat and made warmth creep beneath her freckles.
Tearing her attention away from a certain duo, she focused on the quieter of her housemates. "Looking for a sibling? Or a friend?"
