Snape being a complex person is why. He was a way to humanize the Death Eaters. I don't know if I like the word "redemption" here because that would only apply in the eyes of the readers/people who didn't like him.

Snape just didn't treat the students with kid gloves like everyone else. The students were taking on very serious things and they needed to actually learn. Some of the things they might have already picked up without the need for Dumbledore's Army if they had done that. Hermione is the only one who took the things Snape was saying seriously and was able to apply them to their situations as needed.
