Joel didn't know enough to really tell if the Lake drained to somewhere. He turned his eyes to it as the girl listed a few reasons not to go in. He couldn't really tell if it did drain. "What's a Grindylow?" He knew a decent amount of magical creatures, thanks to reading from the Hogwarts material of his brother and sister, but he didn't know that one.
Meredith took a step away from the tree and towards the Lake, but then changed her mind and stood a safe distance away. She felt relieved when the first year approached her instead.
She paused for a moment. Defense Against the Dark Arts was not her strongest subject, and she didn't always understand what was going on in class. But she had to respond to him in some way, right?
"They're very aggressive octopus-like creatures, and they sometimes eat humans." that had to be about right...
"I'm Meredith by the way. You're also in Gryffindor, right?" She was certain she had seen his face among the other first years wearing the Sorting Hat at the start of the term. She wasn't great at studying, but at least she was great at remembering people's faces.
