Margaret was someone he usually kept a distance from for reasons but he gave her a smile today. As did Ash and Desiree {the latter who always wore the cutest outfits!}.

And then they were off to a start. The Gripping Charm. Nice! It made sense that Mancini had cast the spell on the ball; it was why she had expertly handled it. Not that he doubted your athletic abilities, professor! The Hufflepuff raised his hand, and at the same time became aware that the same ball was heading his way. He quickly caught it and immediately noticed how different it felt than a regular ball. This red ball was certainly easier to hold onto. “Uh, I think the charm was invented in the late 1800s.” The exact year slipped his mind, okay? Done with providing his answer, Jude tossed the ball towards someone else.
Oh it was okay if he did doubt her athletic abilities! While she might have been able to hold her own in sports once upon a time, she'd be the first to admit that she was no longer 20 years old!! Mancini observed as Jude carefully handled the red ball, nodding at his answer, "Exactly. It was invented in 1875 particularly for use in quidditch, although it is definitely not limited to that."

Could she cast it on gloves for better climbing? That would probably work WONDERS on her future Whomping Willow climbing escapades! It couldn't throw her off if she had sticking gloves to keep her in place right?!

V really really wanted to catch the blue ball because it was pretty but but... The older Hufflepuff was tossing the red one and she was under the impression now that you could only talk if you were holding the red. And in case anyone hadn't noticed, Vera really liked to talk.

Jumping for a ball, she caught it with a giggle, throwing it from hand to hand for a moment before offering something about the charm. Which she knew nothing of. "The gripping charm is good for climbing walls! Like a lizard!" Her little tongue flicked out to demonstrate her point, in case anyone didn't know what a lizard was.

Done talking, she took the opportunity to YEET the ball to the next person. This was fun!
"Funny you should mention climbing walls. Because while not originally intended as such... well, yes we will hopefully be climbing." Which now that Mancini was thinking about it, maybe wasn't such a good idea. Oops. Too late now to change the plans?

Pascal was still her faithful companion even if he preferred to stay in her dorm room underneath her lamp.

She caught the red ball next not sure where it had been headed. “I think the charm has something to do with Quidditch and Chaser’s. I think it helped Chaser’s catch and hold onto the quaffle more easily than before?” Maybe that’s what her Quidditch obsessed friends had been recounting tales of over the summer. She swore it had something to do with a quaffle but her mind was more hazy.
"This was exactly the original intent of inventing this charm!! It eliminated the use of finger holes and straps, so chasers to could hold onto the quaffle one-handed!" Did Lisa play quidditch? Leanne didn't think so, but perhaps she knew enough about the sport to know that much.

"Um. If that was grippy, would it have stuck to my face? Is it better to grippy charm the ball or your hands?" Mercer rubbed his sore nose, but it wasn't bleeding... so that was a big old win in his book.
Leanned smiled at the young ravenclaw. She watched the blue ball bounce from his face towards his peers, noting any negative effects. But Mercer seemed unfazed.

"A gripping charm doesn't mean that it's sticky, so no it wouldn't stick to your face. It just makes it easier to hold without the use of straps of finger holes." Which was a bit complicated to explain so hopefully someone could pass the red ball to him soon and he could see it firsthand.

She did, however, want to try catching the ball that had the gripping charm on. A Muggle-born, Jo was still constantly amazed by magic. She raised her hands, caught the red ball, and noticed that the object was easier to hold on to than usual. "Can it help people with weak hand strength, Professor? Maybe if they grippy charm their hands they can hold everything better," she suggested, thinking about Mercer's answer.
"It definitely could help people with weak hand strength, but not necessarily in making your hands stronger only in aiding you so you can better hold objects." Did that help? Hopefully.

She didn't have to do anything at the moment and if she didn't know anything about the charm, that was okay too!! Fortunately the gripping charm basically had what it did in it's name. Although the incantation wasn't so straightforward.

He glanced around some more trying not to bring too much attention to himself.
"It's more specific to helping you to make objects easier to hold, but yes, you'll see shortly that we'll be utilizing the spell in a slightly different way." Had she left her lesson plans somewhere for Jacoby and Vera to sneak a peak?? She didn't think so, nor did she think they could read her mind.

Anyway. Kins wasn't planning to answer the question, but when one of the balls were tossed her way, she made a quick move to catch it. And then the attention was on her. So. So she had to answer the question.

Except. Something Lisa had mentioned caught Kinsay's attention... Because she had heard the thing about quaffles too and it got her thinking. "Are quidditch players allowed to use gripping charms on their brooms?" Kinsay James, of course, had opinions on this, but she kept them to herself as she tossed the ball to someone else.
Kinsay should have seen the uniforms like forty years ago. She would have been in a state of horror. And while they hadn't changed THAT much in appearance, she knew even from when her children attended Hogwarts that the material had improved triple-fold since her own hogwarts days. So comfort-wise, these kids had a lot going for them when it came to the uniforms.

She blinked at the question, taken aback. "Well, I don't believe it's technically against the rules... although I've never really heard of quidditch players casting the gripping charm on their brooms." Interesting point though.

It could just be that it was soft and stuff, but maybe she was able to like, gauge how the day was going to go based on the texture or something. You never knew with her.

The whole passing the balls back and forth thing wasn’t so bad except when that Mercer kid got hit in the face, Luca winced a little and hoped he wouldn’t suffer the same fate. He’d be just a little more watchful from now on. You know, ready to catch. With his hands. Not his nose.

When he found himself with the red ball safely in hands, he smiled a little because yeah, it was easier to hold on to. ”Using the gripping charm probably helps with confidence. Like maybe you’re not as worried about or more willing to pull off a catch or a risky throw with the charm in place.” He shrugged a bit and tossed the ball on to the next kid.
"You could say that. It's like training wheels. And while you could definitely still drop the object, the gripping charm makes it less likely."

Looking up at Mercer's accusation, she simply stared at her friend while trying to assess just how he had drawn such a conclusion. "If I had a second mouth," she replied calmly. "It would not be in my palm but the back of my head beneath my hair." So, no, she certainly was not eating her dandelion fluff because there was no mouth in her palm with which to do so. Hopefully such clarification was beneficial to both Mercer and the professor, who both seemed confused at present. Milo's arrival signaled a spectral comfort and she may have offered him a smile were it not for the breeze that suddenly swept the area and took the pappus along with it.

Her lips twitched downwards ever so slightly and her skin felt lonely, which was why she pressed her palms together. And her palms stayed together as class properly began and Professor Mancini provided a bit of framework to today's lesson - even if she had nothing to really contribute to the particular discussion. In fact, she was far too distracted by the two balls being tossed around and eventually Mercer tried to catch with his face. Perhaps he thought he had hands on his face like he seemed to think she had a mouth in her palm.

Watching as the blue ball bounced and rolled away after its encounter with Mercer, Mitsuki folded her hands in front of her and clasped them there as Luca's toss of the red ball lobbed itself in her direction...to which she sidestepped it and avoided any effort in trying to catch it. Nothing against him nor was his toss inadequate, she simply sensed it was not the time. The red ball rolled to a stop and Mitsuki considered it a moment before looking back at Luca with a small shrug and weak half smile before her attention returned to Mercer.

"Will you try to get hit in the face with the red ball as well to observe the difference upon impact?" she inquired. If so, she could perhaps fetch the red one she had just dodged.
She noted Mitsuki sidestepping to avoid contact with red ball, which Leanne had to wonder if it was self-preservation in not wanting taking a ball to the face as her friend did. Or because she had nothing to add to the discussion. Regardless, it seemed as though this discussion was wearing thin. She did hope that no one else took any balls to the face though, because the next person might not be so lucky as Mercer.

"...The charm is attractive to others." That did make up the gripping, right? He tossed the ball over to whoever was next or neaby.
Wait. What? Leanne had to blink at Caes' answer because she wasn't sure what he was talking about? OH. He meant attractive in that it was like static cling, attractive.

"Not quite. The gripping charm doesn't really give magnetic properties, but instead merely allows you to not drop an object."

Leanne went to retrieve/intercept the balls from being passed around more, setting them on the ground beside her. "Good, good... so it seems some of you have a basic understanding of the gripping charm, or at the very least have heard of it. It's a charm that was invented in 1875 for use on the quaffle to eliminate the need for straps and finger holes. It allowed chasers to throw and catch the quaffle easily and one-handed."

"While not originally intended for use on climbing, it's how we're going to attempt to use it today." So kudos to Jacoby and Vera. "But first we need to practice. Which i have a box of gloves here for to practice on. You may practice alone or with a partner."

She turned and moved a box of balls that had previously been concealed behind the tree into the clearing.

"The incantation is Queritorto.... Khere-it-or-to." She emphasized on the syllables and pronunciation. "The wand movement is a circular movement around the object, in this case gloves. So go ahead and come get yourselves a pair of gloves and let's practice for a few moments before we move on. If you didn't get the chance to handle the red and blue balls we were passing around earlier, you're welcome to come and hold them each to compare. You'll need to cast the charm on each glove."

ooc: moving on to practicing the incantation on a pair of gloves!!! Note the gloves are magically charmed so they'll size adjust to accommodate different sized hands, so no worries about sizing. Example of the gloves provided here. if you need help, holler !!! We'll move onto the activity in a day or two depending on how things go with charm practicing.

Another note: so it's been brought to my attention that a different incantation was utilized back in term 30 which I had overlooked. We will be continuing forward with learning an alternative/second variant of the gripping charm. We'll develop some canon in the coming days to discuss it further IC. If your character happens to have heard of the other variant and wants to bring it up, please ask
