Soon enough, the Headmaster announced that class was beginning. Jordyn turned her attention to the man in charge and listened carefully. He asked a question of the class and after thinking a minute, she raised her hand.

“The first danger I could think of would be the darkness and the unfamiliar forrest. I would be concerned about not being able to see who or what was around me that could be dangerous. I could use Lumos to light my wand and help me to see.” Then another thought came to her. “Of course lighting my wand might tip off any dangerous creatures to my presence…..so that could be a tricky situation.”

"I'm glad you caught that." He said, pleased the first of the responses was already off to a good start. "While you do definitely have the danger of not being able to find your way safely through, the trade off to using a light source could make you as big a target. That's one of the reasons it's so important to know who or what lives in whatever area you're trying to visit."

"Another good point, yes." Something not as often thought of in the face of bigger dangers. "Get lost long enough and you could suffer exposure. Even a crude map should be employed when going to new places." Of course, he expected them to be FAR MORE prepared than THAT, but at the very least, a crudely drawn map.

As had been the case the evening before, they didn't react or respond right away, only stared straight at him. When they did move, it was to check their own watch, just as he'd done a few moments ago. It might have seemed like blatant mimicry, were it not for the fact that they hadn't been looking at the Big Headsman until just now.

After consulting their watch for a long, drawn out moment, and glancing once more at the Headmaster, Nem did exactly as they were told. Almost exactly. At any rate, they retraced their steps and exited the enchanted classroom without a word.

Malachi took a small, steadying breath after the Slytherin left, reminding himself not to get any sort of way about the events of the last three minutes. He would be seeing them later for detention. Until then, there was really no need to pursue things further.

He would move on.

While she was not sure that the other girl liked or understood her, she’d always enjoy having Violet around. She was kinda calming, to be honest.

...Which was good. Calming was very very good, because Ash was now the opposite of happy. She was un-happy, which was predictable considering she was around Trent. Trent... she did not like him. Why? Because he was kicking her best friend out of class. It didn’t matter to her if Kayne was breaking the rules. He was her friend, and therefore it couldn’t possibly be a good day without him there. Even if it was irrational to get upset at being away from her friend for five minutes. Ash really really wanted to say a LOT of things, but she knew she’d just get herself in trouble.

So. She took some deep breaths. She clenched and unclenched her fists a few times. She wiggled her toes. She genuinely smiled and waved at Christian, then Tadhg. Ahhh. She felt quite a lot better now. She looked at Kayne. “Don’t take too long, Vice President.” She turned back to class, reminding herself to not get upset. She felt upset. She took some more deep breaths and tugged on her bracelets. Calm. Down.

“If I were in the forest on a planned excursion, I’d be worried about being abandoned and getting surrounded by acromantulas.” She paused. Had Trent heard about that time? “If I were cornered by more acromantulas than I could reasonably fight, I would try and trick or distract them. Hopefully using magic, but if I had to I could always scream and point in the other direction, then run when they aren’t looking.” What? Screaming and pointing was actually very effective sometimes. It wasn’t the best answer in the history of the universe, but it’d have to do. She was TRYING to keep calm... she really was. She was SO calm. She was answering the question as best she could. Please let that be enough.

Very apt of her to mention that particular creature. The Headmaster nodded...though slowly....trying to figure the entire logic behind the Ravenclaw's statement.

"While...I'm not certain why you'd go on an expedition with people harbouring the potential to abandon you, you make a valid point--especially in this forest." Not literally the one they were in, but the one down on the grounds. "It pays to always keep your guard up. Constant vigilance."

But she had to double check, she wouldn’t put it past crazy professor Trent. She looked back at her friends for a little back up but she knew the only one that would say anything was Victoria.

"Yes....though in the scenario, we don't necessarily mean the Forbidden Forest and it would be assumed it was a sanctioned expedition." But he did appreciate the fact the girl was starkly against the idea, even in an imagined scenario. It was a good look.

"One would be left to wonder why it was forbidden, which could already hint at danger in itself so you're not wrong."

The smile on her face at the response from Trent was infectious. Yes, she absolutely could teach these students a thing or two about being presentable in class. She looked around at everyone, still grinning, expecting her peers to be all “WOOOOWWWW” at her awesomeness.

No such luck.

There would be ENDLESS worries about entering the Forbidden Forest, her main being the creepy crawlies… but she was aware that tiny bugs would be the least of her concerns. She agreed with everyone who spoke before her - getting lost, getting eaten by Acromantulas. She shuddered at the thought of those. “All forests are scary and threatening,” let alone the Forbidden Forest, “I would make sure I had a light source, to make sure there weren’t any dangerous plants in my path.” It was kind of a guess that the forest would be full of those.

"Plants, yes. Many are too busy worrying about creatures to remember that there are several species of flora that also enjoy the taste of flesh. A good observation there." This one was on a roll. It might have shown if the lighting in the room...er...forest was better.

"Of course, that isn't to say one shouldn't be concerned about creatures when in a forest, but the flesh eaters are lurking, too."

Did he regret it? Not for a second. As Ollie joined as well, Evan offered the same smile and the smallest of waves. "Nice to see you, Ollie. We should catch up later." Because he'd certainly been concerned about her over summer and just wanted to check in.

He couldn't help but watch with mild interest as not one, but two students were asked to leave class and return later due to appearance. It certainly seemed this term was off to an early start on troublemaking, having also noticed the points loss - though not the actual event that transpired the evening before.

But class was soon starting and he turned his attention again to Headmaster Trent as the first question was posed. His hand went up, and he waited patiently until his name was called upon. "I agree that the lack of vision would be the first and foremost concern. There is Lumos to light up the situation," Such as one of the Flamsteed twins had already used, though for the life of him he wouldn't have been able to discern if it was the one afraid of cows or the other. "But there's also a night vision charm that could help to see if anything is in the immediate vicinity." Which would cover one sense. "Vision doesn't always have to be the main reliant though either, I think taking a moment to listen to see if there if you can hear anything coming upon you also can give awareness to whether or not you need to be immediately ready to defend."

While Nam had mentioned the lighting charm, it was the latter that got the Headmaster's attention.

"As some of your classmates mentioned, turning the lights on might make you a large target for everything lurking in the forest. Something that allowed you to improve your vision without compromising your position, like you've mentioned, would actually be the preferable option. Afterall, many things that lurk in the dark already have superb vision." So they began at a disadvantage.

He asked her.

Given the speech, this visual forest was going to be replicating some intense dangers. He blinked a few times at the first question, of course it will be dangerous with the creatures and all but what else would he be worried about? ".. I'd wonder about what sort of food there is to eat and where to sleep without something sneaking up on me." How to handle this though, "Thing with looking for food is some creature will want you to share or just decide to eat you as well. So I guess I'd have to be prepared with protection charms and defense all around."

Another response that pleased the Headmaster for how off the beaten track it was. "You will need to ensure you can find suitable ways to take care of yourself while in a forest, yes. As I've said, you don't want to succumb to exposure and need to be prepared to sustain yourself on such trips."

So yes, it would be a good idea to know where your food would be coming from ahead of time.

Claudine decided that she’d rather deal with them over acromantulas. “I’m okay,’’ she whispered to Darius albeit somewhat nervously. “Hoping there're no acromantulas around…” So far, the coast was clear. “Oh hi, you,” the Snakette greeted the tall and gorgeous Heath. Naturally, no words had to be said about her reluctance to be here; the boyfriend understood it all. She nodded with a forced smile.

She almost jumped out of her skin when the door banged shut but Claudine reached for her wand and gripped it reassuringly. Her free hand went up. “I’d be afraid of creatures attacking me.” Exactly what she was feeling now, actually. Except that she sort of trusted Trent not to be that cruel. “To protect myself, I’d have my wand at the ready and have a few protection spells around me.’’

Malachi nodded. "Yes. It's only natural to assume, when entering a forest, that you will not be alone. Nature, afterall, is the home of most creatures and plants." The latter being a mention from Gaeltheos. "Knowing that, it would definitely be advised to have your wand at the ready and a few protection spells on hand."

The Hufflepuff nodded his head before he squinted his eyes at Atlas (he was sure it was Atlas??) performing the wand lightening charm. His mouth was about to open and comment about it. Because was he THAT night blind?! but he did not utter a word for the Headmaster had chosen that moment to reprimand some students.

Daniel turned around, interested to see who was brave enough to break the rules in front of the Headmaster himself. Everyone knew that if you broke rules you did not do it in front of the professors. His dark brown eyes saw Kayne not wearing his school uniform. Wow.... He wasn't certain if that was brilliant or foolish.

Up ahead, he also saw the figure of Nemesis leaving the classroom. He was still intrigued by the older Slytherin. His curiosity had grown even more during the summer holiday when he had talked about his first year at Hogwarts and he had naturally mentioned Upstead's name. He had never seen his older brother get angry so fast. He had looked as if he had been ready to punch something but instead, he had been warned to never talk to Nemesis ever again before he had left the dinner table without further explanation. WHY couldn't he talk to them? WHAT had happened? He had so many questions.

Daniel turned back around before he raised his hand in the air. "Maybe dangerous footing?" he guessed. "You could slip or fall if you are not careful where you walk, right?" he had never walked in a forest before and the pathways on the grounds probably didn't count but he could imagine people tripping over rocks or branches. "Uhm...I would look at the ground a lot to see where I'm stepping and if it's too dark I would use Lumos to light my path..." Like Atlas (Aries? Atlas? ) had done earlier. "I would also learn some basic healing charms before going on a planned excursion" He didn't know any healing spells right now though but maybe he could ask Claudine later?

"Very true. Thank you for bringing it up, Yoon." It was another danger easily forgotten when one considered the grander stage of danger that could be set before you.

"Especially when conditions are less than optimal for sight. You could twist your ankle the wrong way and find yourself all the more vulnerable for it. You could fall into a trap set by a creature or earlier explorers." There were a number of things that could happen when you were on unsure ground.

"One would hope you wouldn't approach a forest without protection." He replied, a brow raising for a moment as he took in the Gryffindor girl. "A wizard should always have their wand, even if they've mastered wandless magic. You never know what might happen."

On the bright side, at least no points were deducted... yet.

When Trent posed his first question to the class, everyone seemed to be mentioning needing light and using Lumos. But wouldn't that attract the attention of less than friendly creatures? And Ash... well Ash seemed to need to talk to someone more about this whole acromantula thing.

"Being able to see while inside the forest is definitely important but so is setting up camp. If you intend on being there for more than a night, it's important to have a heat source and some protection charms for your campsite," Maya offered. "While in there, the best way to protect oneself may be to try remain undetected from all the creatures lurking around. There's the disillusionment charm which would help."

"I like where you've gone with that, Nam. Depending on how long you intend to remain in the forest, you could be in danger of being left exposed if you can't find yourself a good spot to make base camp. Between the elements and the creatures, you could really be in for a rough time." Wandering aimlessly through a forest was never recommended.

"I would caution just as much care when disillusioned, however. Many creatures have excellent smell." Some didn't even rely on vision.

She and Daniel had had some interesting conversations as of late, and while she didn't feel the INTENSE HATRED in her heart for him that she had felt last year, he did make her feel uneasy. She shot him a LOOK before greeting Ollie with a wave.

Honestly werewolves? Was Daniel Yoon right? The thought made V shiver. They seemed so scary! ;___;

She also took note that LISA NAM chose to stand by Remy. Interesting. Why didn't she come stand by V? With her SIBLINGS? It made her feel yucky. Maybe Lisa didn't want to be friends anymore....had she done something to upset her????

She reacted the only way she knew how - scoffing at no one in particular so Lisa wouldn't know that SHE was the cause of the scoff.

But her eyes turned a little brighter when Headmaster Trent answered her question, and she nodded eagerly. "Can't have that. Running into the wall, I mean," she answered back rather curiously, not catching Trent's near slippage there. What she DID catch, though, were TWO WHOLE SLYTHERINS being sent out because they were deemed too sloppy. UM.

HELLO SNAKES.

Nem was one of them?! REALLY? It made her mad. SO MAD THAT HER FACE TURNED RED. And they were lucky they didn't lose points for that!!!!!!

She listened to her classmates give all sorts of answers, and what she did NOT appreciate was the SASS that Max Evans gave to Ollie. V squinted her eyes in his direction, and the ONLY reason she didn't give HIM attitude was because he was a first year. He would learn in time, hopefully. "Well, to go off of what my DEAR FRIEND OLLIE said, I think it DOES depend on what kind of forest. If its name has something like FORBIDDEN in it, it would be scary just upon entering. So the circumstances have to be...thought of, you know? If it's a bright and friendly and inviting forest, my worries might be different. But if you're talking about THIS ONE - " she took a breath and a pause, dramatically, "I would say wolves. Wolves live in forests, right?" and maybe she was still thinking about Yoon's mention of werewolves ;__;

"To be fair, Gellar," Malachi countered, not missing the little twinge of tension between those younger Slytherins. "Any forest can look dark and foreboding at night, even if they're warm and friendly and inviting in the morning so I wouldn't use that as a marker for danger."

To be clear, he wasn't picking sides, just picking her brain. "There are portions of the Forbidden Forest that looked quite pleasant during the day, even with the comparatively dimmer lighting." Calm, serene, you'd never know the place was a death trap.

She shuddered, remembering that least favourite class.

But generally? Dangers of forests? Getting lost, which she'd heard a first year (Max) mention. Not only was it back to be stuck unexpectedly in a forest, if you were on a trail or something and wandered off, there were more likely to be dangerous plants or animals off the trails. She raised her hand. "I'd make sure I had a map and a compass, to avoid getting lost," Margaret said. "Any of these other dangers would be harder to avoid or escape if you don't know where you are, or how to get out of the forest in an emergency. Or...I think there's a compass charm? So your wand acts like the compass?" Not that she knew what it was called, exactly. Hiking with her family wasn't exactly a magic-friendly activity.

"Exactly." Malachi replied. "If you don't know where you're going, you could easily walk yourself into the lair of whatever you may be trying to avoid. You could end up in a rough area with poor footing, too." The Hufflepuff wasn't wrong when she said getting lost made it all the worse.

But also. "How come there aren't barriers to stop people from going into the forbidden forest? Wouldn't it make more sense to draw an age line or ... or something else so that people can't just go in whenever they want?" Then they wouldn't have to worry about scary things coming out to eat them AND they wouldn't have to worry about students venturing inside either. It made logical sense so.

"You shouldn't need a magical barrier to do what you're told." The Headmaster answered, giving a cursory glance about him to make sure the others were listening. "You shouldn't need someone constantly behind you or setting up intricate charms in order for you to exercise self preservation. There aren't just man eating creatures in there and there are times, when supervised, that students need to go in there for a lesson. Outside of those times, school aged students such as yourselves really shouldn't need a babysitter." And that was all he was going to say on that.

"I'm glad you wouldn't hurry to cast lumos, Nam." Truly, he was, for all the reasons she and her classmates had mentioned. By now it went without saying that lumos in a dark forest full of potential dangers was not always the best choice. That they were getting that for themselves was promising.

She couldn't say that, though. The Headmaster wouldn't like it.

"The first danger that would cross my mind is things I can't see watching me. So I'd be ready to cast a protection spell," she said, thinking if this was real. Even she'd feed annoying first years to monsters. "If I was someone else, we'd protect each other's backs."

The Headmaster nodded when the Slytherin offered up her response. "There's strength in numbers. It would be wise to keep a watch for each other's back, make it less likely you'll be snuck up upon."

When the last of them had finished offering up their ideas, it was time to move the class along to the next question. Each was bringing them closer to the inevitable and the man was in no rush, but the show must go on.

"You've all raised some good points. Key takeaways? Don't always be so quick to cast lumos." As one Flamsteed had done. "Make sure you know where you're going, getting lost is dangerous. Creatures aren't the only things that will eat you, be careful of the plants, too. Use your numbers and remain vigilant with protective charms as needed." Again, some solid points. It made Malachi wonder why the students began to malfunction every time they were put into actual situations.

It...did not compute.

"Today, we will specifically be looking at a creature most of you have no doubt encountered before. For now, I'd like you to tell me just what you think makes an acromantula as dangerous as it is. What's that one quality, over everything else that makes it something you don't want to run into?"

OOC: The next question is up! I'll probably move it on a little sooner than 24 hrs but that'll depend on my schedule for tomorrow. Can't wait to read the responses!
