Remy was confident she had an answer for this one, an example, that is, so she raised her hand. “I have an example of an aquatic plant - Gillyweed, professor, is a water plant that is found in…” what was it… “… the Mediterranean Sea, I think.” She had not long read about it. “It can cause a human being to breathe under water.” Remy nodded, confidently.

Ding, ding, ding. Right on the first go!

"Right you are, Miss Gaeltheos" June nodded with a smile. "Take a point!"

Truth be told, he didn't know a lot of aquatic plant types outside of the one and he did not have much additional to offer in regards to that.

But there was one fact he could think of having heard about aquatic plants, so he opted to offer that. Ev raised his hand and waited to be called on. "Aquatic plants generally grow faster than land based. Something about it them having a steadier stream of nutrients available, I believe." But he couldn't explain exactly why.

"Mhm. They do" June began slowly pacing back and forth as the students began answering. "Good point, Mr Nam"

Atlas had been basically right along there with him but ultimately had fallen asleep first in the blanket fort they had made between their two beds. But it was okay, Atlas would keep an eye on him.

All he really had to do was mention Auntie Minnie and he would snap into focus.

Speaking of snapping into focus, Atlas' hand shot right up. "There is the Aqua CHOMP. It looks like every other seaweed save for these purple dots along the edge and those dots can grow into teeth that will bite you. It's not really all that useful a plant though. Well...it's just as useful as any other seaweed ...and actually there were a ton of duels because of the plant because witches and wizards were entirely too opinionated on what its name should be. BUT...it's a plant that will only attack those with active wizarding blood...so that's weird. OH. And it only lives in salt water. Fresh water locations will kill it."

That ... right there .... was her nephew. And he was making June so PROUD. Not the one who was avoiding her eyes on purpose as if that will make her forget he was there, but the one who had the best sunglasses on and very INTERESTING information to share with the rest of the class.

Smiling, June nodded before chuckling altogether. "Right you are, Mr Flamsteed. Take a point as well"

Noah took his cue from Atlas, and offered his own answer. "Kelp, professor. It's classified as a type of seaweed and it's used as a potion ingredient, particularly as fertilizer." he just wasn't sure if they have those in the Black Lake. Kelpies, yes. Kelp, not too sure.

"You know - technically" June replied, air quoting the word, "they are not plants - they are actually heterokont, but defintely worth a mention in this class" June smiled at the boy before moving on to the next student.

And possibly plants (or creatures) that could bite.

She had bundled up on top of her swimsuit, though...so thankfully, she wasn't feeling the chill in the air quite yet. She only hoped that Professor Flamsteed would cast some sort of warming charm so the lake water wouldn't be so unpleasant.

"Aquatic plants can provide a lot of benefits to the water and its inhabitants. For one, they can act as food for creatures, but plants can also help keep the water healthy," Avalon said after raising her hand. How exactly they kept the water healthy, she wasn't quite sure. Maybe it had something to do with releasing nutrients?

Simple but effective. June nodded yet again with a smile, "a very good point, Miss Sinclair, they are a very important part of the ecosystem"

Though she did feel a lot less restless when when Nem came to join her. Any and all totally hypothetical desires to flee and drown oneself in lemon drop ice cream had disappeared. Hypothetically, of course. The poke elicited the softest of giggles from one Kinsay James and she turned to offer them a small smile in return. "Hi, Nem."

She was going to ask about their lack of swimwear, but then Phoebe arrived and properly distracted her and took away the need to ask any questions. "Hi, Fifi. I'm okay, how are you?" The older James got a little side hug, before Emmerson took Pheebs for proper snuggling. As for protests? There were none from Kinz. "Right, Emm!" On cue and everything. They were getting real good at this tag teaming thing - years of practice were to thank.

With her attention turned back to- .................................................. Wait.

BARTHOLOMEW HENRY IS NOT A MORNING PERSON SQUID?!?!?!?!?!

And NO ONE thought to tell Kizzy before this very moment???????????? So Professor Flamsteed was saying that Kinsay Cassandra James had come down to the lake every day before breakfast for TWO entire years to find a squid who wouldn't ever show himself, not because he hated Kinsay (or because he hated Cal), but because HE DIDN'T LIKE MORNINGS?!?!?!?

AND NO ONE THOUGHT TO TELL HER????????????

Please hold.

Kinsay James is in shock. This news has just rocked her world - and not in the good way. So while Professor Flamsteed posed her first question for the class and others began throwing their hands in the air to offer answers, Kinsay had questions of her own.

Beginning with: "Professor, can squids even tell time?!" Everything Kinsay knew was a lie. She had to tell Cal immediately.

There wasn't too much to be distracted by at the moment since the surface of the water was calm and with the usual ripples.

Well...almost nothing to be distracted by, because his ears twitched a bit when he heard the not-a-crybaby V speak up and...well...he had to say something because there was some fault in her logic "But you don't need a watch to tell the time...or at the very least have a rough estimate for what time of day it is," he mused while pointing his finger up at the sky. "Even on on overcast days, the Sun will let you know. And besides, most watches run on parts that can break. Sun isn't due to let any of us down as a time keeper for like...billions and billions of years."

So, in short, Kinsay James, yes...Bartholomew Henry could. Probably creatures in general were better at knowing the time of day than the rest of them.

"Time, like this 24 hours in a day time, is a construct of man anyway."

June wasn't sure if she should be amused or ..... worried.

The question did throw her off though - especially when she had long forgotten what she had actually said to Miss James and the lesson had officially started. But before she could explain the concept of time to the young lady - her nephew was speaking yet again.

He was quite eager today, wasn't he? Such a Flamsteed today too. Almost made her think of young Airey.

"Thank you for that explanation, Mr Flamsteed. And yes, Miss James - Atlas is right. The change of day and night is the most visual way one can tell time. Maybe their concept of time is different, but I am sure they can tell too"

Nem flashed a small, apparently strained smile at Limpet, then looked away again and dipped into their school bag, pulling out a book and flipping it open to where they'd last left off. It was charmed, and so read as total nonsense to anyone other than Nemesis, though the text itself was nothing untoward, only an in depth analysis of the runes in the Second Aett and their uses.

Flamsteed could continue with her little lesson on... whatever. Aquatic plants, sure. Nem would read. Everyone was happy. Ecstatic, they were sure. Thrilled.

This was .... fine by her.

Content on ignoring their presence, June continued on with the class. This was fine.

More than fine.

At the mention of aquatic plants, the little redhead's hand flew up into the air like a rocket. "An example of an aquatic plant is the witch's ganglion," she said, a little excitement bubbling at the pit of her stomach. The reason for that because: "It is used in the ever legendary Potion of All Potential." If she could ever...EVER brew a potion of her choice, it would be that one. They stories she's heard behind it tickled her curiosity. And the mystery behind its creation only added more suspense to it.

Potions. <3

June smiled so wide - her face hurt.

"That is a rare, very rare plant, Serena. I can't believe you know of it. I am super impressed right now. Well done"

HOW were her students so good???

Next time she saw Maya out of class, she was also getting a tackle hug too.

Class began with a question pertaining to aquatic plants. Ohhhh.... so maybe they were going to look at the aquatic plants underwater!! That sounded like fun to her. She bounced momentarily- which she often did when she got excited. “Professor! You can have fresh water and salt water plants. OH! Are there differences in magical abilities in plants that are freshwater grown versus saltwater grown?

It alwaaaays warmed June's heart when her students got excited about Herbology. So, she was smiling away and nodding at the young ravenclaw's question.

"Quite right, Miss Nam. And yes, there are certainly differences - massive ones too. Some herbologists - deliberately grow them in different conditions just to harness those magical abilities" For good, and the bad.

She felt sorry for him because she knew how it felt to be pushed out of one’s comfort zone. “Reckon so. You’re welcome to stick close to me if you want.” That way she could keep an eye on him if needed. There must be something in the general air because Claudine often found herself attracting Ravenclaws. Speaking of which...Eden got her wave returned. Then there was her favourite Ravenclaw. Heath too looked uncomfortable but he shouldn’t be. Claudine could bet that his brain was making him overthink the whole swimsuit thing. “Hey, you.” Did the smile from her cheer him up a little?

Indeed today’s topic was aquatic plants. Claudine did know a fair bit about these particular plants. The thing was, was she up to volunteering an answer? For now, she’d just listen. However, these was something she wanted to say in relation to the topic, so after a few more minutes of internal debate, the Snakette raised her hand. “A few aquatic plants are used domestically for purposes like cleaning, cooking and skin care.”

It was unlike of Miss Blaze to be quite, and June had a made a note of that -- until she spoke up.

"Quite right, Miss Blaze"

SHE WAS READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALTHOUGH. They had to star with the question session first, it seemed. SIIIIGH. Alright then. Hand up! "Aquatic plants help to oxygenate the water for the OTHER living BEINGS!" And did she know any????? "BULRUSHES! They look like SAUSAGES on a STICK!" Which was a VERY GOOD THING in Scarlett's book. Made her think of CAMPFIRE and BARBECUE and ALL THE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now she was HUNGRY.

...

June wasn't sure if she should concerned or not about the young girl's excitement. It was also why she had requested Kazmi to join her for the swimming part of this lesson.

Nonetheless, for now - June nodded with a smile. "Good point, Miss Mordaunt"

What did she know about underwater plants? They were underwater. Somewhere she definitely didn't want to be.

Somebody already mentioned gillyweed, which was going to be her real answer. "There's also water lilies." she said with a raise of her hand. "They're nice to look at." which maybe wasn't really a use? "They also provide a habitat for water creatures."

Such lovely answers.

June nodded at the young girl, "Mhm. They are very vital for the creatures underneath. The survival of some depend on it"

What did aquatic mean? V realized she had no clue, and so she didn't raise her hand. And while her deduction skills normally weren't too sharp, she realized everyone was naming plants that had to do with the water. And so......it must mean water plants. THAT MADE SENSE.

Gaaawwwwddddd EVERYONE GOT REAL BORING suddenly. And V couldn't focus ;___; but like, everyone was talking and talking....gillyweed? That sounded funny. She then heard Kinsay????? James???? question and quickly glanced at her. "Of course squids can't tell time...they can't wear watches on their little....leg thingies," she said as if it were OBVIOUS. Duh.

Now back to plants. "What about coral? It's underwater. Also, anything coral-colored is faaaaaabulous," she said with a slight hair flip.

June laughed softly, "while Corals are underwater, I am afraid they are not plants - they are actually animals"

It was okay though. There were no wrong answers.

She didn't know its real name though, just what her old brother told her it was called. But she could try.

She raised her hand. "Some ducks dive underwater to eat plants that grow in ponds," she said. "Like duckweed!"

June was well aware of Miss Turov's fears, so naturally she wanted to be as encouraging as possible about her being in this class. It was why she was delighted to see the girl actually trying to participate in the class as well.

"Right you are, Miss Turov. Duckweed is actually a very valuable suppliment for some animals"

She had heard about him from her family but she had never met him.. yet. It was on her list of things she hoped to do one day. Apparently he didn't like mornings? Welp.. that explained why she hadn't met him during any of her morning runs.

Anyhow, she could focus more on that later. Right now she needed to think about what she knew of aquatic plants. Annnnnd that was a lot. Lia raised her hand. "There's the Lotus. It has roots that grow underneath the water and it has large leaves and flowers with seeds for pollinators and waterfowl."

"A very good mention, Miss Donavon" June nodded in approval. But was she surprised? Not at all. She knew Dahlia would have a good response.

The boy let out a small sneeze in his elbow as he listened to the first question before his eyes went to the book that Nemesis was reading. Why were they reading when they had class? He strained his neck to see what they were reading but quickly gave up when it was all gibberish to him. He didn't even know that they made textbooks for Hogwarts students in different languages. That was pretty cool.

"There are three types of aquatic plants" he finally spoke, holding his hand up in the air as he did so. "Floating, submerged and" he stopped for a second or two when he felt a sneeze coming up. But it was a false alarm. "Fixed plants"

"Hydrilla is an example of a submerged plant" he answered.

It was such a text book answer, June wasn't sure if she was impressed or worried he just read aloud whatever he may have quickly read in the moment.

But it was good.

So, June nodded, "Very good, Mr Yoon"

But as for the actual topic of the lesson, Misa's answer made something pop into her head. "I think I remember reading something about a type of water lily being one of the largest aquatic plants," Ivy said, raising her hand. "The Victoria water lily, I think. It's really pretty."

"Mhm. They are quite mesmerising to look at. And you know whats more brilliant about them? They are super strong too, a small baby can easily float on it" Nature was just remarkable, wasn't it?

For that reason, the third year expertly ignored the way Victoria was talking to her best friend. Atlas was on the case and had handled it better than the ...er...rabid response she tended to have when she had the idea people were trying to telling Kizzy she was wrong so...

She would just answer the question asked and pretend the Professor wasn’t saying they wouldn’t see the squid.

What did she know about aquatic plants?

“They’ve got a higher tolerance for water so you can’t over water them no matter how much you try. You could probably just stick ‘em in a vase of water and forget ‘em. Regular plants would eventually die of thirst.” The lazy guy’s guide to herbology 101.

You know, while it was a basic response - it was still about the lesson and nothing completely outragreous - a thing June usually expected out of the young girl.

So .... color June impressed right now.

It was a bit crude - in pure Emmerson way, but it worked, it was why June didn't hold back a smile and nod of approval, "right you are, Miss Cambridge"

At least this first question from the Professor was one she could answer. ”The lotus is an example of one,” Dia piped up, hand in the air. And that was about all she could contribute to this one, herbology being one of her weakest knowledge bases. Plus, she was still struggling with the fact that she was out here in her bathing suit this late in the year, bundled up with her coat over it though she was and warming charms in place on said coat as they were.

"Quite right, Miss Wolff" June nodded at the girl before moving back to the centre of the group - ready to move the class along now.

June nodded once again. "Good point, Miss Blackthorne" June was definitely feeling way good about this class now. Everyone had shared some amazing facts and she felt it was time to move the class along.

--

"Excellent answers, everyone" June smiled wide. She was honestly impressed. Except for one of her nephews being dumb, almost everyone had managed to share something brilliant. "Aquatic plants are - to simply put -- plants that have adapted to live in the aquatic environment" she said, gesturing back at the lake, "there are so many, and each bring with them a unique quality - both magical and mundane."

"There is a whole world underneath, one that will blow your mind --" Could they tell how excited she was for them to see it all??? "-- and all these plants you all have mentioned -- they are a vital part of that world. I want you all to witness that today." she said with a soft smile, "but before we do that - we will focus on one plant that Miss Gaeltheos mentioned. Gillyweed."

"Can you tell me anything about it?"

OOC: You guys are absolutely brilliant ;_; thank you for sticking around! Second question is up. And the Mini Activity will be up in twelve to sixteen hours <3
