"Yes, you probably save your memory for more important things," Gabriel said with a grin. "I suppose it doesn't matter after so much time, anyway." Like they'd been working there for tens of years or something.
He was both relieved and disappointed when the lift stopped with a ding! on Level Two and the doors opened. Gabriel led the way off, turning back to give Tomasz one last friendly smile. "I suppose...have a good day, Tomasz," he said, unsure of how to end the conversation. "I hope we can, uh, discuss again."
Was that weird? That felt weird. He gave an awkward wave, then looked around to make sure he wasn't about to collide with anyone and headed off down the corridor. Wait, maybe he should have waited to be sure Tomasz wasn't going the same direction? Because then it would be awkward that he'd said goodbye, sort of, and then they'd continued walking together? Small talk was uncomfortable with people you might see every day, Gabriel quickly decided. Well, slowly decided...he had waited for an entire conversation to elapse before coming to his conclusion. Tomasz wasn't picky either - what was that saying? Beggars cannot be choosers. It was, perhaps, something to do with this feeling. And though he was quick to want friendship, Tomasz wasn't ever sure if the feeling was reciprocated. He had an idealized version of friendship in his head, it was hard to know what standards others had in this regard.
He laughed quietly, in reply to Gabriel. His memory for dates and facts was not so sharp, but maybe those things were not as important, yes. "Eee, yes, maybe," he agreed, despite not entirely understanding what was meant by this 'so much time'. It really wasn't for very long that they had worked here. At least it was not long for Tomasz. But maybe this was a matter of opinion?
And when the lift came to a stop, Tomasz felt slightly more at ease. He was itching to get started on his day. "Yes, you too," he offered a small smile as he stepped out behind Gabriel and waved in return. It was a little awkward, but nothing he was not used to. Tomasz did need to head in the same direction, but this would make things more awkward. So instead, he turned to head in the other direction, knowing he would loop back around in just a few minutes.
