SPOILER!!: Replies!
With each answer that the students gave, it appeared on the board in the list - Gabi had it charmed so that she didn't have to manually add each one, and could continue on talking as the students gave their answers.

Mamie raised her hand. "Albus Dumbledore was the headmaster of Hogwarts when Harry Potter went here," she said. Hopefully that was right. She thought it was?? Maybe?!
"Very good!" Gabi grinned at Mamie, and the first answer added itself to the list.

She saw what happened to people when they stayed quiet in Defense Against the Dark Arts and even when the Hoods weren't present, they always seemed to show up at the worst times. So she couldn't risk it. Kizzy would be doing everything she could to stay out of trouble from now on. She had already experienced enough trouble to last her for the rest of her life. Probably. Also? Her heart likely couldn't take anymore. It was starting to take less and less to send her into a spiral and she didn't really want to go through one of those during class (though she always worried that she would - it was hard to control).

Truthfully, Kinsay didn't actually know that much about Dumbledore. Except that he had a really long name that she could proudly remember its proper order and everything. Albus Wulfric Percival Brian Dumbledore! Why would his parents name him that? It was a mouthful. She wasn't interested in much else regarding the man though, so she didn't look into it proper. Still, she did recall flipping through that particular section of the textbook once. So her answer was simple.

"He had a beard."

And Professor Recard could take that any way she wanted. Kinsay knew it could mean double. She was smart. She knew ~things~.
Recard wouldn't quite get the double meaning in that - because wouldn't that have implied Dumbledore had a girlfriend or wife to take the pressure off his secret love for Grindelwald? - but in the most literal of terms...yes. Kinsay was right. "He did indeed have quite impressive facial hair," she nodded.

"And he was also skilled in alchemy, and discovered the twelve uses of dragon blood." She ought to remember that, her governess, Miss Howard, had repeated it often enough.
"Excellent Miss Blackthorne!" Gabi replied with a smile. Should she have been so...openly praiseful of her, considering her current status in the school? Well, she wasn't going to NOT be supportive...yes, she decided she didn't quite care what the hooded figures thought of that, and continued to smile at her before moving along to the next answer.

Even so, her answer had been rather quiet as she had raised her hand. “Albus Dumbledore was the owner of the elder wand for a while, after he’d won it in his duel with Grindelwald.” She’d been observant, after all, so the wand in question was something that had come to mind rather easily. Plus, all the greater good references and, well, the anti-muggleborn stuff made sense with that part of the former headmaster’s history.
"That is correct," Gabi smiled and nodded as the answer added itself to the list behind her.

Fun not actually fun fact, a lot of Grindelwald's catch phrases and ideology was being reused.
"Good job, Miss Philips. Yes, many people forget the two wars overlapped some - and had similar ideologies that fueled the fighting," she added with a small frown.

So far, she wasn't doing a great job of keeping up appearances but...Rosier wasn't here so. Maybe it was fine to let her guard down just a bit.

She raised her hand. "He founded the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldemort during the First and Second Wizarding Wars."
"Excellent! Yes, Albus Dumbledore founded the Order, and the reinstated it as well when Voldemort returned during Harry Potter's time at school," she elaborated slightly on Ivy's answer as it was added to the board behind her.

Dumbledore was an interesting topic, she supposed, although definitely someone they already knew something about just through commonly held history. Phoebe supposed there was the Goon Squad answer, and she was prepared to say it. Make everyone happy... well, make everyone unhappy, but not the Goon Squad. "Dumbledore took a very short-sighted stand against You-Know-Who and protected the Muggleborn and blood traitors who stood against him."

Phoebe put a comforting hand on Kizzy's shoulder and gave it a little squeeze. Still here, little sister. Still a good person.
Gabi appreciated Phoebe's willingness to play into the whole Neo-Alliance thing and gave her a soft smile. "Yes, he did indeed have a soft spot for muggleborns," she said in agreement. Just stating a fact. Not saying she agreed one way or another.

They were learning about... Dumbledore? Was this a class that the Neo-alliance supported? Hadnt Dumbledore been accepting of all backgrounds? He sat up a little straighter in the classroom when the discussion started, noting his fellow students responses. After a bit, he found himself smiling at his fellow housemate’s, Pheobe’s, comment. It was a good way to put it..... being safe. Dumbledore did love things Muggle wise! He found them fascinating.

He once said... It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be...” he began before biting his lip to hold his tongue further. He cleared his throat, looking away from the Professor and shrugging his shoulders. “Unsure what he meant by that... He could speak Mermish.” Or so the books insinuated.
Gabi chuckled a little at Noah's answer. "He could speak Mermish. And as for that quote...I like to think he meant that anyone was capable of great things - or terrible things, if you want to look at it the other way," she added with a small shrug.

Gabi nodded sadly. "Yes, tragic. Killed by Severus Snape - on his orders, mind you - right here in the Astronomy tower."

So sleepless nights it was.

Upon hearing the first question, Minjae wondered why it mattered who Albus "way too many middle names" Dumbledore was. Because it did not. Still, by now he knew from first hand experience what would happen if he defied. Even if The Hoods weren't visibly present at the moment he always had a feeling that they were always monitoring. "He uh..." another yawn escaped him. "Sorry, He was old. Around 150 " Of course he knew more but he was too tired to think right now.
Goodness. Someone needed a nap. As long as it wasn't in HER class. Gabi smiled at the simple fact and added it to the list. "Yes, he was rather old. Died at 115 though - not QUITE to 150."

They like, dreamed about their visions for the future. Which in this case was the greater good." She tapped her fingers three times on the desk, and let the silence stretch on. "Just like wizards do now." Some things never change.
Ashley was really playing into this Neo-Alliance thing, and Gabi could only hope that she wasn't actually starting to BELIEVE that muggleborns were as terrible as Rosier claimed. "Correct. Dumbledore changed his views on the matter after he grew apart from Grindelwald, however," she pointed out. So it WAS possible to change one's opinions and views.

So she was currently slumped in the corner or wherever Recard had put her, biding her time until she had to answer the question.

"Albus Dumbledore had a younger brother, Aberforth, who really liked goats," she answered as monotone as possible, as though she were reciting from a book. She HAD read a book on this topic, though it was ages ago. Some Life and Times something something by some Skeeter lady. Anyway, continuing her answer: "And his little sister, Ariana, was att---"

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no. The sudden realization of why Recard had brought up Albus Dumbledore hit her face (and showed) like a big red blush. But Bernie had to soldier on, didn't she. She squared her little shoulders. She regretted even volunteering an answer now, didn't she.

"Ariana Dumbledore was attacked by local Muggles when Albus and his siblings were kids. So his dad went to Azkaban for getting r--righteous vengeance on them. They--- they, the Muggles, they deserved it, didn't they, professor? For attacking a witch just for practicing her magic?"

Bernie's blue eyes had a definite spark of fury in them as she looked to Recard, and then looked away toward the windows. For no reason. But also... why was Bernie always bringing up the topic of Azkaban in this class.
Gabi was finding it hard to read Bernie's emotions - she certainly hadn't picked this lesson for the reasons Bernie was thinking, even though she had no way of knowing that was what was going on through the Gryffindor's head. She had simply found a good way to sprinkle a tiny bit of "greater good" nonsense into a lesson and took it. They would probably all be surprised by just how little she actually mentioned it.

"Who are we to say what they truly DESERVED for their behavior...but you're right. It was a tragic thing, what happened to Ariana. No one from the Dumbledore family was the same after that," she said sadly.

He listened to some of the other answers and heard clearly something about how the guy's sister was beaten by Muggles. Great...so that's where this lesson was going. The Slytherin slumped into his seat a bit more and tried to look hidden. Think that's about as much participation he was gonna give this class now if it was going that way.
Normally, Gabi would have playfully reminded Moose that the names were right there...on the BOARD...but she didn't want him to think she was making fun of him or teasing him based on his blood status. "Close. Percival Wulfric Brian," she corrected with a smile.

In class, there was something or other about Dumbledore. Usual and normal Kale would've answered with a peppy grin and a flag waving hand about how Dumbledore was a famously fab knitter, but this Kale wasn't that Kale. This Kale was quiet.
Gabi was keeping a close eye on the Headmaster's son - she had been all term, truthfully, but she was REALLY watching him now. Just to be safe.

It was just that her classmates had gotten to the more well known stuff first, which meant the fifth year had to do a little digging around in her mind to come up with something.

"Based on all the jobs he held during his life, it seems pretty clear that the guy was a natural born leader." Put him in front of a crowd and he'd probably have everyone on board with what he was saying in no time at all. The beard probably helped. It gave off all the wise vibes.
"Good observation, Miss Summers," Gabi said in response to her answer. "He certainly did hold a number of leadership positions."

Right. She tore her mind away from it again and raised her hand. "He had like, seven middle names." She couldn't remember the exact number, but she knew there was an obscene amount.
"Three, as Mister Stover pointed out earlier," Gabi corrected her with a small smile.

He returned her greeting with a slight nod, too afraid to draw unnecessary attention to her with words or a smile.

He reluctantly looked up as the lesson began, and it was only then that he noticed the writing on the board. Dumbledore, huh? He already had an idea where this lesson was going. This was going to relate to Dumbledore's ties to Gellert Grindelwald, wasn't it? Given the current headmaster's ideology, it seemed the most likely route. That got him thinking about Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship. It was a tragic story, really… two lovers torn apart by ideological differences. It was enough to make him feel sorry for them, or it would've been had he not seen firsthand what damage Grindelwald's ideology could cause.

Didn't they also have a blood pact not to fight each other? That concept intrigued Heath, but he didn't feel comfortable mentioning that out loud. He had no problem recalling facts or quoting lines, but when he had to put his thoughts into his own words, he got tongue-tied, especially when he was distressed. Knowing his mood today, it was only a matter of time until he said the wrong thing, so just in case, he wasn't mentioning anything to do with Grindelwald or Dumbledore's involvement in the wizarding wars! He opted for a safer answer, one that (hopefully) wouldn't be interpreted as anti Neo-Alliance. "Dumbledore studied alchemy under Nicholas Flamel," he said after raising his hand.
"Excellent Mister Jones. Alchemy was one of Dumbledore's greatest strengths - and the fact that he studied under Flamel was likely a large part of that," she continued.

That Skeeter book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, they'd actually given that a second read through, and occasionally scanned it again for another look at certain details, usually those applicable to Grindelwald, though not always.

After a moment, Nem looked away from the window once more, levelled a steady stare at Recard, tilted their chair back on two legs, and said nothing.

Albus Dumbledore? Don't know her. Not heard that name. Never experienced that emotion.
"Careful, that's a good way to fall and hit your head," Gabi said as she passed by Upstead, who was being rather quiet today. If they fell and gave themselves a good gash though, at least they would be doing it in the Healer's classroom.

The first question was simple enough; there was so much they all should know about Albus Dumbledore. His name was going to live on forever in history, just as Harry Potter’s.

After a couple of minutes, the Snakette raised her hand. “Dumbledore held the positions of Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards as well as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot.”

There were questions being asked? About Dumbledore, but she wasn't fully paying attention. Only enough so that she could pass as not staring at Nem.

It was a good distraction for everything. Everything? Everything. Tavie wasn't much in the mood for actively participating or being her usually peppy self. Too much happening in the school for that. And she purposefully didn't sit with her friends. They all felt too much, and she didn't want to feel anything right now. But she did like stealing glances at Nem. He looked nice.

Oh and.... something about Dumbledore?

Tavie halfheartedly pretended to think.
Gabi would have been quite shocked to see Tavie's inner thoughts - personally she felt there were more important things going on to be concerned with than whether or not boys looked nice. But then again, Gabi hadn't been a teenage girl in many MANY years, so what did she know?

Coming into the classroom with a big scowl on her face, it was safe to say that the she did not notice the dull looking Professor Recard. No, she simply walked in and headed to the left side without another thought, the disappointment of not being able to sit with all of her friends long gone by now. Pulling her materials out, she eyed the board and made a note of the title Albus Dumbledore in her neat, slanting writing and awaited the first question.

If she was being honest, the lesson was already somewhat boring to her, something that usually never happened but she had so many other things on at the moment that surely that wasn’t a surprise to most of the teachers? How any child at Hogwarts could focus was just beyond her.
Ingrid listened quietly as fact after fact was spouted off from her fellow students, her own quill moving so that she count note them down, just in case they were useful although in truth, she had already known most of them. Putting up her own hand now, she added to the list of facts “Rita Skeeter, the journalist I guess, wrote a book about him talking about his life and lies” because according to her, he wasn't exactly a great person even though he'd done some pretty amazing things.
Gabi had found Ingrid's desire to sit on the left side - when she could have sat on the right, as a half-blood - rather odd. Perhaps she was doing it in solidarity. Which was nice...albeit rather silly in Gabi's opinion. "Ah yes, Skeeter's book The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. Mostly fabricated, as most of her works were," she said with a soft eye roll.

Once they were all done answering, the class had compiled a hefty list of facts about Dumbledore, which was now on the board behind her.

Quote:
The Life and Times of Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore
  • He was Headmaster at Hogwarts when Harry Potter attended
  • He had a beard
  • He taught Transfiguration prior to becoming Headmaster
  • Skilled in alchemy and discovered the 12 uses of dragons blood
  • Won the Elder Wand in a duel with Grindelwald
  • Fought in the Global Wizarding War
  • Soft spot for Muggleborns
  • Founded the Order of the Phoenix
  • Could speak Mermish
  • Killed by Severus Snape in the Astronomy Tower
  • Lived to be 115
  • Believed in "For the Greater Good" with Gellert Grindelwald for a time -his good friend and possible partner
  • Had a brother, Aberfoth (who liked goats) and a sister Ariana who was attacked by Muggles, resulting in their father going to Azkaban when he retaliated.
  • Had many middle names
  • Held numerous leadership positions
  • Studied under Nichols Flamel
  • Held various positions in government including Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot
  • Subject of the book The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbeldore by Rita Skeeter
"The vast size of this list just affirms what many of us already knew to be true - wizarding history would be VERY different if Albus Dumbledore wasn't involved. He not only was a key figure in THREE wars involving the Wizarding World, but his achievements outside of these main events were many. As some of you mentioned, he was a very skilled wizard - Violet brought up his discovery of the 12 uses of dragons blood, for example - and he also had a big impact on the school as both Professor and Headmaster. We have barely begun to scratch the surface with this list...which you should all be copying down into your notes, by the way," she added as an afterthought. That was obvious though, yes?

"Now, since his life spanned such a long time, we are going to focus on only ONE aspect of it today," she explained. Surprise! This WASN'T an anti-muggle lesson after all - despite the few opportunities she'd given them to put on a show about being all pro-alliance. Too bad their performances hadn't been witnessed by the squad, but then again, she was quite glad they hadn't made an appearance. Hopefully it stayed that way.

"We are going to focus on his relationship with Harry Potter. Specifically, the fact that he figured out that Harry Potter was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Many of you may remember that, during the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry entered the memories of Severus Snape and learned this fact through those memories - Dumbledore HIMSELF never told him," she elaborated.

"Now, my question for you is this. WHY? Why do you think Albus hid the truth from Harry? I don't want you to tell me whether he was right or wrong in doing so - I just want to know what YOU think his motivation was," she added. There would be plenty of time for them to dive into the morality of that decision later...

OOC: Hey guys! Thanks so much for participating so far! Moving right along to question two! As Gabi instructed, just give me the WHY behind Dumbledore's decision to keep Harry in the dark about being a Horcrux.

IN REGARDS TO RECENT EVENTS IN THE COURTYARD- All those who have been taken to "separate" student housing, your characters would have been escorted to and from class. Since this lesson is ~technically~ AFTER the announcement, you can RP your students having knowledge of what happened in the courtyard/separation of the students and troublemakers from the rest of the population/escorting to and from classes/etc in any posts from here on out. If you have any questions on this, please let me know!

We will be moving on once again in about 24 hours!
