Yep. They were doomed.

Mamie didn't want to let this first year down, though. Surely they could do a little more to protect themselves. She donned her padding and sunglasses, feeling suddenly very cool with the sunglasses. She pulled her wand out and cast a softening charm on her padding. That would...that might help. "Do you know the cushioning or softening charm?" she asked her new friend softly. If not, she could help. Or try to help. It probably would not make this any more dangerous.

She eyed the mirror in her free hand...it would be nice if it had been a whole mirror. Her shard was kind of small... "Engorgio," she said, pointing her wand at the mirror and willing it to work on the fragment but not certain it would.
