I think the single most appealing thing that the HP fandom has formed is its reputation as "The Gateway Fandom". People start out with HP, much like I did, and then end up getting sucked into Percy Jackson, into Doctor Who. It's pretty cool.

But creatively speaking, my favourite thing is that Harry is about as observant as a doorknob, which means that all sorts of liberties can be taken! The Hogwarts Castle could be sentient, for example. It makes for some rather interesting fanfiction, to say the least.
