Personality: Being the only child in a very reclusive family, Ben is used to being alone. Other than his family and private tutor, he hasn't always had a lot of interaction with other people in his day-to-day life. Books are his main companions, and he feels very uncomfortable if he doesn’t always have one with him to hide behind read when he gets a chance. He's not likely to initiate conversations with strangers, though once he gets to know someone well enough he maybe more willing to. When he does speak, he tries to be very careful with what he says, always wanting to think before he speaks so he doesn't say something wrong.

When something catches his interest, he becomes determined to learn everything and work so hard at it that he masters it, no matter how long it takes or how many failed attempts he has to go through – unless, of course, those failed attempts happen in front of someone else. The slightest mistake when other people are around causes him to give up and withdraw almost instantly, refusing to “embarrass” himself further. He is always wary about what someone else might think of him, not wanting people to think negatively of him.

Overall, he tries to be more rational than emotional, or at least, he wants to give off that impression. Because of this, he tends to bottle up and ignore any strong emotions, not wanting to create a scene or draw attention to himself.

Background: Ben is the only child of Pascal and Maybelle Selwyn. He was always a quiet and shy child, only speaking once spoken to and even then as little as he could get away with. His parents were not particularly nurturing or affectionate, preferring to leave the house elves to care for him. They were away a lot of the time anyway, helping Pascal's father Claudius smuggle magical creatures and dark artifacts in and out of the country.

Once he was old enough, they requested an old family friend to tutor him, Dorothea Ridgeway, who had also tutored Ben's father when he was Ben's age. Unbeknownst to them, however, Dorothea was beginning to regret the crimes that she had supported by turning a blind eye to what they had been doing for decades. She was as conflicted as she was shrewd, though, as she hesitated for years over what she would do about it, but also subtly encouraged Ben to not blindly accept what his parents - or anyone else - did.

In late June of 2098, Ben's family's current smuggling run was ruined after Dorothea, finally overcome with too much regret to ignore, sent in a tip to law enforcement about their plans. When law enforcement showed up at their rendezvous point, they fought back but were soon defeated and arrested, though not before Ben's grandfather Claudius was killed in the scuffle.

With his parents gone, Dorothea turning herself in as well, and his furious and grief-stricken grandmother refusing to take him in, Ben was removed from his home and placed in Stemp House as soon as possible, and it was arranged for him to transfer to Hogwarts as a fifth year.
