Jessa watched silently as others entered the room. She didn’t know them and had no particular interest in knowing them outside of whatever the program required. There were several reasons her end goal was forensic pathology. The living, interacting with them, was not one of them.

She offered the faintest smile to the boy (Apollo) who took the seat by her and Noémi. It was a gesture borne of politeness rather than any real interest in being welcoming or open to his existence. That was how she operated, polite but detached. Distance was always a good thing to have.

Seeing no real reason to pay the trend forward, Jessa remained silent through the entries and subsequent greetings of the others, her fingers picking away at the edge of her clipboard the entire time. Being on high alert like she was, she noticed immediately the entrance of a woman who looked to have no business in the meeting. Was she her ward? Quite obviously not and she knew the Professor was aware of this as well leaving no reason for a response. She did wait to see if anyone else claimed her but the sudden flickering of the lights coupled with the thunder got her heavily distracted. It was no longer the woman she cared about but the exit and how far she was from it.

Resolved to focus, Jessa turned her attention once again to the Professor, scowling somewhat at the suggestion they mingle and get acquainted. No thanks. Questions though, she had a few of those and was about to rise to make her way over to the woman when the lights were suddenly completely gone. Without thinking, Jessa immediately grabbed hold of Noémi’s arm, squeezing harder than she ever intended to. It wasn’t the dark on its own that got her but compounding factors.

Her grip only loosened (and not by much) when the lights came back on. It loosened further as curiosity swept to the forefront, spurred on by the disappearing Professor and the appearance of a little girl. She had even more questions now.

“Does she belong to anyone?”
