Just as the professor called the lesson to an end, Bel was feeding Bat number five. Another little boy. She was amazed that her classmates either hadn't noticed, or were well-behaved enough not to make crass jokes, because back home there had been much laughter at the very obvious differences between the boy and girl flying foxes. The other four bats she had already fed were now hanging on the floating tree branch. Bat number five was clinging to her robes, upside down at her shoulder.
"Yes you can have all this mango to yourself. Yes you can. Isn't that tasty? Your cheeks are so full you can't even answer me. Good boy. Lets get you on ya branch with ya friends, shall we?" Bel carefully took hold of his feet, extracting her robes from his grip, and then lifted him up, getting only a couple of lazy flaps as she did so. She hooked him on the branch, noting how his feet automatically curled around it. She always thought it was amazing how they needed their muscles to open their feet up, not to close and hold on.
All done. Bel headed out of the cave. She had to wash her hands off now. So sticky.
