Daisy cleaned her workstation, packed her things away, ready to hand her vial in. She only felt confident enough to submit the "assessment vial"

Now this potion looked a little more promising! Noble’s lips twitched as took it in hand and looked up at who had produced it. “Not too shabby at all, Daisy. You sure you don’t want to take any with you?”

Back at her workstation she quickly weighed them to make sure that she had the exact amount before gently crushing them with her fingers, releasing the juices. With her knife she roughly chopped them up. After adding the chopped petals to her cauldron, she thoroughly washed her hands using magic and then proceeded to stir the potion in a counter-clockwise direction until a dark purple hue was reached. At that time she proceeded to give her knife, scales, and spoon an especially thorough cleaning to make sure that there were no remaining traces of foxglove on them.

At that point she added 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10... pumpkin seeds from the smile pile she had collected earlier, counting off each one quietly as she went, and giving a counter-clockwise stir between each one. When it reached a bright orange colour, Isabel knew that she had done everything correctly. Or at least correct enough to not have a messed up potion.

Pleased with herself, she turned off the heat and ladled some of her potion out into a clean vial before writing out a neat label and attaching it:



Confidently she placed the stopper on top and handed it in to be assessed, and yes, she wanted to take that second vial. Fingers crossed her work was deemed good enough.

Pompion Potion - Turns drinker's head into a pumpkin

Ingredients:
2 cups pumpkin innards, densely packed (sorted so no seeds)
3 flitterby moths
100g fresh bouncing bulb, stunned if necessary
4g fresh foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) flowers, petals only
10 fresh pumpkin seeds


Instructions:
1.Use diffindo to cut open the pumpkin.
2. Using a metal spoon, scoop out the innards, pulling out the seeds and putting to one side.
3. Put two densely packed cups of pumpkin innards in the bottom your cauldron with a cup of water. Set over medium heat.
4. Add three dried moths to your mortar and grind them to a SUPER fine powder.
5. Use a peeler to remove the outer layer of the (stunned) bouncing bulb. Finely chop 100g of bulb (measure with scales) using a silver knife and proper technique. DO NOT add to cauldron.
6. Once the pumpkin has reached a light simmer, add the ground moth powder and stir clockwise until powder turns grass green (four rotations if done right).
7. Add the bouncing bulb and stir until it is incorporated.
8. Turn down heat and set timer for 30 minutes. During this time you can carve the pumpkin.
9. Pluck the petals from the foxgloves, and weigh out 4g. Crush to release the juices and chop roughly. Add to the cauldron, and stir counter-clockwise until potion changes to a dark purple. Wash hands after handling the foxglove - it is toxic if consumed alone.
10. Add the pumpkin seeds one at a time, stirring counter-clockwise between each. The potion should turn a bright orange.
11. Carefully ladle a sample of your potion into a labelled vial and hand in for grading. If and only if I deem your potion safe, you may also take a bottle from class to do with as you wish.

And other bright orange potion. “This looks promising,” he told the sixth year as he popped the first vial into his tray for marking. The second vial he carefully pulled the cork out of, and used a clean pipette from a beaker on his desk to put a couple of drops on to what looked like an ordinary piece of parchment. He grumbled for a few seconds, leaning in to get a closer look – although at what exactly, it wasn’t clear. “Not bad, not bad at all…this is yours to do with as you wish.” With that, he re-stoppered the vial and passed it back with a nod.

Shera was lightly frustrated with that, wondering if she had somehow managed to not chop the petals finely enough, like with the moths. Or maybe she hadn't crushed the flower petal properly?

Her attention was distracted from her mistake when her hand started getting itchy. Fwooper, she'd forgotten to go wash her hands immediately after touching the foxglove. Blue eyes caught sight of the beginnings of a rash on her hand. That could be ignored, for now. Abnormally calmly, Shera stood and moved over to wash her hands before returning to her seat.

She'd go to the Hospital wing after class if it didn't get any better, for now she could ignore it.

Either she didn’t want to use very much of the potion, or she wasn’t very confident. He’d hazard a guess at the latter, given her question. “Of course,” he replied. “You may use the Potions Laboratory if you wish.” Definitely a Ravenclaw. With a clean pipette he took a drop from the vial and once again scrutinised his parchment. “Passable, yes. It’s yours.” The effects wouldn’t last all that long, most likely…but it wasn’t hazardous, and he’d let it out of the classroom.

Grey-blue eyes watched as Emmalyn decanted some of her potion into the vial. It wasn’t bright pumpkin orange, more of a pastel shade. However, it was certainly better than some others had produced, and he gave the first year a nod.

That done and potion now adequately orange, Jessa bottled up a bit into a medium sized vial with her name and house. Swiftly, Jessa cleaned her work area and moved to the Professor's desk to turn it in. Heading back to her desk, she retrieved the book she'd been reading earlier from her bag. Now then, where was she?

"I'll see you later." She told Cam, giving Bel a small wave too before shoving everything else back into her bag and heading out. She WOULD be testing the potion, but she didn't mind brewing it again up in her lab. She wouldn't take any of this back with her, somewhat humouring the man's request without turning away her own curiosity. See? Compromise.

Yet another thing to be considered.

Jessa didn’t retake her seat, now much too restless after having been nearly out the door only seconds ago. Instead she stood behind the stool of her clean work station, nose once again buried in her book.

What honestly else did they need to do before the man said they could leave? Her potion was done. Her work station was clean. Did he want a chorus of goodbyes?

He’d just looked up from Emmalyn’s bottling when he saw Prefect Eagle trying to escape from the classroom. Had she even handed a potion in? He glanced at the tray of collecting vials, grunting when he confirmed that she had. But still, he hadn’t told them they were dismissed. Apparently she was much too eager to get back to that book, even though she’d now thought better of leaving early and had returned to her desk. Well, there was one way to sort that.

“I don’t believe I dismissed anyone yet,” he said gruffly, his wand already in hand. He now made an arch with his wrist, silently casting a summoning charm on the book she was so intent on reading. “Consider this confiscated until after dinner. You will learn to pay attention in my classes.”

She put them aside and cleaned out her cauldron, scrubbing it with scourgify too. That done, she packed her things away, then taking the two vials up to the professor, waited until it was her turn to approach him. She handed one over, for the grade, then offered the other one.

"Professor Noble? I don't actually know that I would have any use for this potion because I don't think it would be a very nice thing to give to someone, but you can have it if you want." Bel paused and then added hurriedly, "Not that I am trying to give you something I don't think is a nice thing! I just mean... maybe you have a use for it or can give it to someone who wants it? If its... good enough anyway." Yeah. Anyway. Whoops. "Oh also I have a question? How come we were doing all anticlockwise stirring? What would happen if it was the other way? I mean, what does the direction of stirring actually do to a potion?"

…Prefect Ravenclaw dealt with for now, Noble turned to the next student waiting by his desk. Not nice? Somehow he’d thought Bel might be the sort to engage in pranks, but apparently not. However, her offer did give him an idea. One side of his mouth curled up into a smirk. “If you’re sure, Bel…then yes, if it’s up to scratch, I think I might have just the purpose for it.”

As for her other question? He ran a hand through his hair. “It rather depends on the potion…and who you talk to. I had many lectures at university on exactly this topic…different Professors had different views. In short though, stirring the wrong way invokes the wrong sort of magical reaction within the ingredients. I can discuss it further if you want to stop by my office sometime.”

She poured some of her potion inside, sealed it, and wondered briefly what the heck she would do with this potion. Who would she use it on?... Maybe time would tell. She had no plans right now, but hey, why throw away her hard work??

She left the potion at her station, while she turned her vial in for assessment. She took it up to Professor Noble for his say so that she could take some extra.

5. Stun your bouncing bulb. Peel off the purple skin, and chop finely with a silver knife. Weigh out 100g. Add to your cauldron and stir enough to incorporate.
6. Let your potion simmer for 30 minutes. You may carve your pumpkin whilst you wait.
7. Pluck the petals from the foxgloves, and weigh out 4g. Crush to release the juices and chop roughly. Add to the cauldron, and stir until potion changes to a dark purple. Wash hands after handling the foxglove - it is toxic if consumed alone.
8. Add the pumpkin seeds one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each. The potion should turn a bright orange.

And another one for testing! It seemed the opportunity to take a sample away wasn’t at popular as he thought it might be, although maybe it just reflected how confident people were with their handiwork. They were right to think he wouldn’t be impressed if they dared ask him about a potion that didn’t at least vaguely resemble his. Once again he put some drop on the parchment, grunting as he squinted at the results.

After what probably felt like a long wait, he held the vial out to Kye. “It’s not as potent as it could be, but you may take it away, yes.”

The prefect added the now chopped foxglove petals to her cauldron and retrieved her glass stirring rod to stir the solution in a counter-clockwise manner until... tada! Deep purple. Or violet? She figured it was the same thing, honestly. She wasn't really sure of the difference but looking at the cauldron of the person beside her, it looked just the same colour... which meant she was on the right track. Hoorah! Of course, she had to wash her hands. Still, she wasn't sure if she could trust any healer unless it was her parents or Healer Reed. Sorry, miss new healer lady, but it was better to be safe.

On to the last ingredient, if Vivian could remember clearly. The Slytherin had immediately counted ten seeds from the amount she had collected from earlier and set it closer to her in case she forgot. With her right hand holding the glass rod, Vivian used her other hand to add each seed one by one to the approximate center of the nearly done potion. One seed... counter-clockwise stir... two seeds... another stir... three... yet another stir, and so on until she had finally dropped the tenth seed into the cauldron. With one last counter-clockwise stir, the blond gave out a relieved exhale when the liquid inside turned orange. Very... pumpkin-y, indeed.

Finished! Vivian turned the heat off and filled a medium vial with her potion, labelled with her name, house, and year. She also did the same with another vial, because only Merlin knew when it would be deemed necessary. She replaced the cap on both vials before moving forward to submit her labelled one to the Professor, her testing vial in the other hand.

"You're a life saver," he grinned at her while she poured half her potion into his cauldron, not yet putting together that this meant that portion control and remaining ingredients to be added would now needed to be recalculated at LEAST - considering he had no idea Zoryn had also incorrectly followed any other instructions prior to his return to his seat. "I really owe you BIG time."

Uh...what step was this potion on now? "Pumpkin seeds," he read from his parchment, grabbing a fist full of them and beginning to count them off. It was THEN that he realized he may need to recalculate. Seeing as he had HALF the potion in his that meant he ought to reduce the number of pumpkin seeds in half too, yeah? Pushing five pumpkin seeds out of his hand, so that he had five remaining, Derf plopped the first one into his cauldron and watched it sizzle and POP into oblivion with his counter-clockwise stir. That was a good thing, right? Pompion Potion
turns the drinker's head into pumpkin; brewing time of 50 minutes

Ingredients:
2 cups pumpkin innards, densely packed (sorted so no seeds)
3 flitterby moths
100g fresh bouncing bulb, stunned if necessary
4g fresh foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) flowers, petals only
10 fresh pumpkin seeds

Instructions:
1.Use diffindo to cut open the pumpkin. thanks Zoryn
2. Using a metal spoon, scoop out the innards, pulling out the seeds and putting to one side. thanks Zoryn
3. Put two densely packed cups of pumpkin innards in the bottom your cauldron with a cup of water. Set over medium heat. thanks Zoryn
4. Whilst waiting for the cauldron to come to a light simmer, grind 3 dried flitterby moths to a fine powder in your pestle and mortar. thanks Zoryn
5. Add these to the cauldron and stir clockwise until the contents turns grass green (4 complete stirs should do the trick). thanks Zoryn
6. Stun your bouncing bulb. Peel off the purple skin, and chop finely with a silver knife. Weigh out 100g. Add to your cauldron and stir enough to incorporate. thanks Zoryn
7. Let your potion simmer for 30 minutes. You may carve your pumpkin whilst you wait. thanks Zoryn
7. Pluck the petals from the foxgloves, and weigh out 4g. Crush to release the juices and chop roughly. Add to the cauldron, and stir until potion changes to a dark purple. Wash hands after handling the foxglove - it is toxic if consumed alone. thanks Zoryn
8. Add the pumpkin seeds one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each. The potion should turn a bright orange.
9. Carefully ladle a sample of your potion into a labelled vial and hand in for grading. If and only if I deem your potion safe, you may also take a bottle from class to do with as you wish.

Uh oh.

Potion in her hair. Potion on her robes. Potion on her FACE. Potion splattered all over her workstation (and Derf... x2).

He didn’t get chance to test Vivian’s potion before the first cauldron exploded. It was quite the catastrophic failure…he wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’d blown the bottom of the cauldron out too. Snot-like tendrils of potion were clinging to…well, pretty much everything, including the Hufflepuff Prefect, and Noble couldn’t help but wrinkle his nose as a rather pungent smell wafted across the classroom.

Only for the Zoryn’s to go too. Well well well. Making no effort to help with any clean up, Noble raised his voice. “And that, students, is why we follow the directions and measure things accurately.” Potions could be violatile things indeed if you didn’t. “3 points from Gryffindor, Zoryn, for cutting corners.” Yes, he’d noticed. “I expect a vial of perfectly brewed Pompion Potion from both of you on my desk by dinnertime. And you better leave your workstation spotless.”

As for the mess on them? Well…it shouldn’t do too much. The potion was designed to be consumed, after all. Not worn as a face mask. But…it’d be fun to watch and find out, no?

Taking her stirrer, she did four clockwise turns, watching with a small smile as her powdered moths turned bright green, which verified that she had, in fact, ground the moths down enough. She added 100 grams of her bouncing bulb after that, stirred it a bit to let the bulb actually mix in with the potion, then set her timer for half an hour.

She turned her attention back to Derf, biting her lip. She'd wait to see if the professor needed any help, rather than carve her pumpkin (she was never a big fan of carving pumpkins, even at Halloween).

Finally, she had added all ten and done her ten counter clockwise stirs in between. She turned off the burner and got her ladle, getting a nice vial full of potion for the professor to grade. Hopefully Derf's potion hadn't contaminated it much...it looked orange, though, which is what the professor had said it should look like SOOOOO...yeah. Seemed ok!

Just as she had finished, there was ANOTHER loud boom and MORE potion went flying. She wasn't sure where exactly the boom had come from this time, but it was close. Alright, that was it. Scarlett was DONE. She let out a screech and jumped down, crawling under her desk.

"IT'S LIKE A WAR ZONE IN HERE!" she exclaimed. If she left this lesson with pumpkins coming out of her ears because of all the potion residue floating in the air she was NOT going to be happy.

Well, from over here it looked like Scarlett’s potion was tolerable. But since he didn’t feel at all like collecting her vial himself, she’d have to come out from hiding and hand it in if she wanted to get a grade other than T.

7. add 100g of bouncing bulb stir just enough to incorporate (like cake)
8. Turn down heat and set timer for 30 minutes

Patrick was surprised he had made it through this entire lesson without hurting himself. He was genuinely surprised that something hadn’t gone bang yet. Then he heard it, a big boom with a splat sound after it. Turning his head toward the middle of the room he found Derf covered in the potion. By the looks of it the pumpkin seeds were too much or something had gone horribly wrong with him and Zoryn’s station. He was going to ask if he was alright but looked like some girl he didn’t know (Zita) was already there. With a deep breath to calm his nerves after that loud bang, he began to count out the pumpkin seeds on the table. Counting onto the table first in hopes that he didn’t make his cauldron explode like poor Derf did. And maybe the hope that he had actually done everything right.

Now time to add the pumpkin seeds to the potion. One he mumbled dropping it into the cauldron and stirring the potion counter clockwise. He continued this nine more times wanting to do well. Stirring the cauldron one last time he peered over the edge to take note of what color the potion was. “Orange,” he sighed with relief as he pulled the stirring rod out of his cauldron. Now to give his vile for grading. Writing his name slowly and a bit nicer than the first time followed by his house name and year he began to ladle the potion into the vile.

He looked at the potion wanting to give it a test run...on his brothers. He bottled up a second vile to take to the front and ask the professor if he could take it. He was hoping that he had done everything right. Just as he set down the vile for grading he looked up at Professor Nobel “excuse me professor, could I take this second vile with me to try?” Holding the second bottle up for Professor Nobel to inspect and hopefully okay for him.

Yes, Patrick’s potion was indeed orange. Noble took the vial, lightly swirling the liquid around inside as he held it up to the light. The consistency was a little runny, but that alone wasn’t a deciding factor. Two drops were extracted from the tube and placed on the parchment, and Noble tapped his fingers lightly as he waited for…something…to happen. Apparently he was satisfied, and he nodded. “All yours.”

Just as he walked to the front desk to hand it over, he heard a KABOOM. And then another KABOOM.

What was going on?!

Staring mortified at the gooey, icky mess, he left his vial at the front desk and walked hesitantly towards the place of the KABOOMs, recognizing Zoryn, to whom he'd wordlessly offered a handkerchief to wipe her face at least, since someone else was already fussing over the boy who'd caused the other explosion, and he also didn't want to throw a Scourgify at her face. He didn't trust himself to do that. "Do you-umm-need some help to clean this up?"

... he wasn't sure what to do to help the poor souls.

He grunted a thanks at Daehyun as the vial was handed in. It didn’t surprise him that the boy didn’t have a second for him to give the once over, he’d looked a little flustered all lesson. Still, it was a decent effort by the first year, despite the cut.

She'd take her time wrapping up so they could leave together. That was the plan.

Once a portion of her finished potion was put in a vial and labeled with her name, the sixth year started cleaning up her work space. She'd survived the class and that was a good thing. Only the rest of the year to go...

Looking up from the vial that had just been placed in his hands, Noble checked on others in the class. Abraham was still lagging woefully behind, but Junia seemed to have kept him vaguely on track at least. And her potion was looking passable too. Hmm.



With only a few stragglers left to finish, and a morning coffee now desperately needed, Noble looked at the clock. Yes, it was definitely time to be done. “If you haven’t put a vial for marking on my desk, then chop chop! It’s your breaktime you're missing. Everyone else…you’re dismissed!” With a flick of his wand, the classroom door swung open.
