"Sounds fascinating," Jake replied, though he wondered by this point if she might think he was being sarcastic or something, because people DID tend to believe that with his tone of voice. There was a brief moment in which he had an internal debate over whether or not he cared about coming across as such, but quickly decided that, this time, he did. "What plants are you working with at the moment?" Or was it perhaps just as many as possible.
Uh.
Hm.
Jake sort of made a face at that point. Twisting his mouth a little in a not-quite-pursed-lips sort of expression, before finally shrugging a shoulder. "It was. At first. I had my motivations, at least," he replied looking over the many juice jugs and all their different colours. "Turns out my passion wasn't for law enforcement after all." There, that was a simple enough explanation, because he wasn't sure now was the time to get into it. He hardly knew Emmalee, after all. "I do. At the end of the year, if all goes to plan." WAS it fascinating to him? Emmalee was having a difficult time reading him, probably due in part to the headache that wasn't quite gone. Emmalee chose to believe him, perhaps not in small part because it would take too much energy to respond otherwise. "Today, it's been all about our new screechsnaps," she said, sighing and shaking her head. They were just screaming and screaming and they'd yet to find the cause. "We brought them in to consider a cross-breeding experiment with honking daffodils, but there's something wrong that's keeping them screaming and we haven't quite figured it out yet." Hence the need to escape from the level for a bit and get a tea. Emmalee usually left the charmed earmuffs near the mandrake stations, but this might be an exception.
Sipping her tea again, she nodded as he spoke. She understood a bit, she thought, having tried a few things before realizing that herbology was what she was meant to do.
But the end of the year, well, then that was still some substantial time. "Well, I hope that things do go according to plan for you, or at least, if they don't that the detour is for better things."
