She could live without compliments, so long as there was respect.

She was set on helping herself to a mouthful of her sandwich when Gavin opened a can of worms, so to speak. The fact that she could look after herself was a good thing, yes... but his question regarding his help... she couldn't see this going anywhere good anytime soon, so she did the only logical thing she could do. Eat. Until she thought of something nice-ish to say. Needless to say, she chewed in quiet contemplation for a generous moment, fixating on him across the table. Where other matters were concerned, every day matters, "I already do." She'd have never lasted this long with the kid if it hadn't have been for him keeping her sane at the best and worst of times. But despite her lack of ego, she was still too proud a person to rely on anyone for help, including Gavin. Help denoted weakness, something she was keen to avoid at all cost.

Sandwiches were all well and great, but when push came to shove, she needed something to wash it down with, and the lack of coffee in her cup was not conducive to this. "I actually don't know," she replied truthfully, a slight shrug for emphasis. Would this piece of news disturb him? "As far as I can tell, anyone could be responsible for it, numerous people even.." it was a mystery to her, one she didn't much fancy solving. It was part of its charm. The only instance in which she would want to spoil things by investigating, was if the quality dropped, someone was poisoned, or someone died... but her paranoia wasn't rabid today.

"A chore? Mmmm, no." Gavin bit thoughtfully into his sandwich, considering what she'd said. He didn't know if he'd be willing to classify complimenting others as a chore...but it was something. What? He didn't know at first but then, "It's more a challenge I'm getting better at overcoming." To compliment one needed to note the good qualities in another and verbalize them. There was hardly a time Gavin paid attention to anything but himself but these days that was changing--a little. Most things were still disregarded, Emily was not.

The pause that fell between them had him lowering his sandwich. Would she answer at all? It seemed like something that required a lot of thought though he could never see why. Anything could have gone here; a sarcastic declaration of her inability to function without him, some ego deflation as she pointed out the obvious that was her stern independence, a comment on the weather. So long as she answered. It was the unspoken conversations that you had to be concerned about. After much coffee sipping and returned stares an response was offered. "Great." He said, adding a drop of cheer to his tone in an attempt at lifting the conversation again. "So when you've come to the conclusion that sugar is the ultimate evil, I can brew something up and we'll get you cured of this love you've got for it." That was an option too if only in jest.

Then she said it. She didn't know. The Senior Undersecretary found himself eyeballing the cup of coffee in his hand. Just. STARING. Emily didn't seem too bothered but...it...the coffee....Was this living on the edge???? WAS THIS MEANT TO BE THRILLING?? The added mystery brought on by ignorance? Quite casually he put his cup down. He'd be observing everyone for the next month. If anyone started acting funny, he was having this hole sealed. The sandwich was still okay. At least they both knew where she got them. "An investigation you aren't keen on diving into. I'm impressed. You're getting better at separating break and work." Though he was sure she still worked through lunch sometimes. No evidence needed.
