Default Review: House of Secrets book

Authored by Chris Columbus (director and producer of Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets) and Ned Vizzini (author of young adult fiction), House of Secrets is an epic adventure novel bound to keep the reader’s eyes glued to the pages.

When the Walker family move into Kristoff House, something instantly seems amiss, and no later than a few days after settling into their new home do they realise that the house might be more than it seems. Soon enough, stories within books come to life and the three Walker children, Brendan, Cordelia and Nell must travel through a plethora of scenarios, battling a giant, pirates and a power-hungry witch who holds the key to the children ever seeing their parents again.

The Walker children are incredibly likeable, each with their own quirks that make the story flow so well. The plot is fast paced and able to project a Hollywood blockbuster in your mind as you immerse yourself into the journey of the children through the 560 pages. There is a healthy balance of romance and humour throughout, with much of the character interactions being a pleasure to read. Cliff-hangers are also a common occurrence, and further add to the energy of the story.

House of Secrets was originally written as a screenplay by Columbus before being adapted into a novel with Vizzini, and with consideration to this, it’s no surprise that the book has the blockbuster feel to it. Ending with a cliff-hanger, it is most definitely a series to look out for in the future!

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling described House of Secrets as a “break-neck, jam-packed, rollercoaster of an adventure” and it is very easy to see why.

House of Secrets is released on 25th April, and can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
