It is our understanding that leaders are picked for showing one major characteristic: LEADERSHIP. We realize that seems a bit redundant, but after the abysmal performance of the student leaders following the strange events on the Hogwarts Express… perhaps a reminder is in order:

Dear Prefects and Quidditch Captains,
You weren’t chosen for this job because you’re the meanest or the prettiest or even for having the best swagger. We might admire those things about you, but that isn’t the job. So, for the sake of Circe, when the train halts and the first years end up in a bloody pile, stop patting yourselves on the back long enough to help a kid out.

We see you’re the first to leave the train, Gideon Gert. We see you making kissy faces alone in the carriages and ignoring everyone else, Sierra Greingoth and Kennedy Escalante. We see you, Milton Shacklebolt, demanding cookie compensation for your help.

When first years are patching themselves up… well. That’s a sad state of affairs that speaks for itself.
