After what felt like an eternity, he finally found his voice again. "But I...they can't...why are YOU telling me this?" he finally asked. She was not the primary party involved in this nonsense, so why was it her responsibility to tell him?
Gah. He couldn't think. His thoughts were just swirling in his head. This was too much to take right now...did Mum know? Oh, he hoped she didn't. Not yet. He'd get over the shock eventually but he wasn't sure about his mother.
Sierra jumped back, a look of annoyance spread across her face.
Why was she telling him this?! "...because I thought you'd like to know, and I really needed to tell someone. If you're going to be all rude about it, though, I'll just leave," she snapped. She stepped away and eyed him for a few moments. As far as she was concerned, the battle lines had been drawn the second she and their father had gone one way, and Alex and their mother had gone the other way. He better not
dare say anything bad about her father...
...or his new girlfriend for that matter.
"Yes, they can," she corrected,
"and they are. I'm telling you I spent the entire summer with the two of them." A hint of a smile flickered across her face as she remember their vacation in Hawaii.
"She's been good to us, you know. She even made breakfast for us..." Then a flicker of realization flickered across her face, and her tone changed completely.
"Well, that's all I had to tell you," she abruptly announced.
"Oh, and keep this between us, please." She suddenly had the feeling she'd said too much, almost as if she'd revealed too much of her new, private life. This was really none of Alex's business as far as she was concerned.
