“For Such an Impressive Mentor”

“Happy Birthday,” Lily whispers to the empty room.

Upon Professor Slughorn’s desk, she places a bowl and fills it with water. From a locket worn around her neck, she removes a lily petal, carefully smoothes it before she sets it atop the water. Another spell, whispered into the dark, and she smiles.

Later, when Slughorn enters his office, he sits down and inspects the bowl before him. To his surprise, the petal sinks in the dish, just before it transform from white petal into a sleek, white fish. Touching the card next to the dish, he smiles.

“Thank-you, Lily Evans.”
