Default St. James's Park

Tucked amid London's busy streets and buildings, being a roughly six-minute walk from the Ministry entrances, is St. James's Park. Covering 57 acres and featuring a small lake with two islands, there is plenty to explore. Entering the park from Horse Guards Road to the east, one will find themselves near a park pavilion and quaint cottage. From the Mall to the north is a gate kiosk, drinking fountain, and a tiny coffee shop. Walking far enough west, one will stumble upon the Vitoria Memorial, Buckingham Palace, and the park's playground. The rest of the park provides a number of trails and a bridge that gives access across the lake from the south end of the park to the north.

On a sunny day, the park is a perfect getaway, especially during one's lunch break or after clocking out of work. It is is an excellent place to have a picnic under the shade of a tree, enjoy watching the waterfowl and resident colony of pelicans idly swimming in the lake, or go for a stroll or a run along the trails with a friend before having to venture back into the loud, bustling city.

Olly was actually quite excited about the fact that they'd agreed to host this event earlier in the afternoon. It meant they wouldn't have to stay all that late. So maybe her and Schuyler could still have an enjoyable evening after putting Evie to bed tonight. Before the Ministry reopened tomorrow, that is. Honestly, she wouldn't have minded the winter break lasting just a few days longer. It had been nice spending quality time with her family.

Speaking of, an almost one year old Evie was currently in her arms, pointing at random things at the park. Yes, that was a bird. And another bird. And another-

Looking around for a good place to sit, Olly spotted her soon-to-be co-Department Head James Draper and decided that it was the polite thing to say hello. She'd left Schuyler to pick out some food for them while she made the rounds. As department head she'd learned that it was sort of expected of her to be present at these type of events. Which didn't just mean that she had to be THERE but also that people had to notice that she was there.

"Hello." She said once she was close enough for James to hear her. Was he enjoying himself?

Had he given this more thought, he would have chosen to show up late. Unfortunately, however, being prompt was in his nature. He valued his time and it was a shame that others did not do the same. If there were more people around, he would have witnesses to say that he had at least shown up and it wouldn’t be outlandish to walk away right now. But again, being late was against every fiber of his very being. So here he was, staying at a distance from literally everyone. Yes, even his newest employee (Caleb) who had sent him a small wave. James pretended to have missed it.

If he didn’t make eye contact, no one could see him. That was the philosophy he was following here. Besides, there would be time to familiarize himself with the staff during office hours. Right now? He wanted his peace. They still had a one more day before they were all forced to be friendly. This was his own time. Couldn’t anyone respect that?

Unfortunately, most hadn’t gotten the memo, read: Yoongi Hyland. Aka former Hogwart’s Headboy and literal, self-infatuated child. James had a special place reserved for Yoongi in his non-existent heart. It took everything for the Department Head not to scowl at the young man. ”Hyland,” formalities, they’d have to keep the distance still. James wasn’t about to treat any of his former students as if they were on an even playing field, sorry. Actually, no, not sorry. Did anyone expect anything less? ”This is a surprise.” What exactly was the surprise? That they were both working for the Ministry or that Yoongi actually amounted to something other than a professional mirror-holder? He’d let the boy figure that one out.

Speaking of people he had hoped to leave behind in life, Spaceman, had entered scene and James was grateful that he hadn’t come to join their little reunion. It was honestly the only intelligent thing James had ever seen the Astronut do. Perhaps there was hope for them yet.

Hope. James had been hoping that Charles would show up soon as it meant he could get away with slipping away soon enough. All he had to do was make his presence known, then by the time events were underway, no one would even notice he was gone. They’d just remember he was there. That’s what mattered. Could you tell he was ready to leave?

“Pleasure is all mine, Mr. Minister,” no, it really wasn’t. Especially when the man kept calling him ‘my boy’. James hated that as much as he hated large social gatherings with former students and colleagues. If The Minister was right though, this wasn’t a funeral… yet. Call him ‘my boy’ one more time and see if that changes though. Ahem. Someone PLEASE get him out of this hell. ”Please excuse me, my mind is currently elsewhere I’m afraid,” it was the best excuse he could come up with. James preferred to be honest. But alas. At least he was making some effort to appease the man.

After his brief (but necessary) chat with the Minister, James began to walk back towards the entrance (or in this case, the exit). Look at the time! Must be on his way al—

Never mind.

What was it NOW? The man turned, ready to shut down the person who had come to bother him, only upon noting that it was his new partner (Olly) he quickly relaxed. Okay, as much as he really didn’t want to be here, she was just about the only person he didn’t mind interacting with at the current moment. James didn’t like most people, but he’d have to like her. It was worth making an extra effort. Otherwise, the upcoming year was bound to be an absolute disaster. ”Good afternoon,” he smiled (YES, SURPRISE, HE WAS CAPABLE OF ONE OF THOSE) at the woman with child in tow.

Y’know, as unlikely as it was, James didn’t mind kids. Until they were screaming and making a mess in their pants. It was then that he deemed them as an absolute waste ofspace. ”And who is this? he crouched to wiggle one of her feet. Yes, yes, he was adorable.

Laurel was playing with the strap on her handbag that matched her blue dress and other accessories as she waited for Aaron. It didn’t take long before Megan showed up in a sleek white number that at least in her opinion was a bit much for a picnic orientation event. She wasn’t going to judge though instead she smiled acknowledging the other woman as she got closer. "Hello Megan, I’m good and thank you. You don’t look too bad yourself, are you going out after the orientation event is over to show off that beautiful dress of yours?" Noting that the park was filling up with other employees around them Laurel asked. "Did you have a good break?"

Many employees seemed to be here with their family. Not wanting to interrupt family time, she wandered around aimlessly for a while, then walked over to a man who looked like he had come alone as well. Although she was an independent woman, she was not about to have a picnic all on her own. Might as well join this guy, yeah?

"Hi, mind if I join?" Autumn asked as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sat down on the blanket without waiting for a reply.
Jacob had after some searching found a good spot of grass to put his blanket and picnic basket down on. The 26 year old guy had just settled down on his blanket and was about to check the content of the basket, wondering if there was an timeplan for the event when he was interrupted by a woman’s voice. He didn’t have time to greet the woman before she had just taken a seat on the blanket next to him, assuming that it was okay. Trying to hide his flabbergasted moment Jacob introduced himself. "Hi, I'm Jacob. I work in the Gobstones division of the Games & Sport’s department. And you are?" A new employee obviously right?

Taking a few deep breaths she put a smile on her face and looked around as she headed into the park.
"Hello" she greeted the people as she passed.
The moment his boss walked in Jacob couldn’t help himself but he stared at her for a good long minute or two. Victoria did not look like her usual confident and happy self. If anything she looked slightly sick but maybe he was imagining it? Anyway, raising a hand to wave at her Jacob called out "Hello Mrs Culloden, did you have a good break?"

Speaking of Charles, January was initially inclined to go find him. He reminded her so much of her father who had passed away quite some time ago, so she felt comfortable around him. But she also knew he was a busy man and probably wouldn't be able to hold still for very long, so she had made a decision try and make new acquaintances tonight.

Spotting an unfamiliar face that seemed to be alone, but friendly, January grabbed her own picnic basket and made way for her. "Excuse me... May I join you or are you expecting someone?" Her husband and daughter were occupied, otherwise they would have joined her too.
Mariana had just taken a bite of a delicious looking sandwich she'd discovered in her basket and was wondering whether what she was tasting was avocado-she loved avocado- when the older woman approached. She would have a mouth full of food at a moment like this. Slightly sheepish, she swallowed what was in her mouth and hastily dabbed at her face with a napkin. "Hi, please do. I'd love the company." She gestured to the spot beside her and moved her picnic basket over some, making room.

Giving the woman a moment to get settled, the brunette noticed the arrival of the minister. He seemed friendly, the type of man she'd enjoy working under, and she offered a polite smile in his direction.

"I'm Mariana Medina," She said, turning her attention back to her companion and offering a smile. "I must say, this wasn't what I was expecting when I heard about the ministry having orientation for employees. This is great."

He supposed he could've asked his mum to come with him, but how pathetic would that be? Besides, she was a very busy woman.

He looked around, getting a feel for the place before stepping any further in. Mostly because of Auror reasons, but also because he felt awkward in this setting. Not because of the park itself. He'd been here plenty of times. It was the 'picnic' aspect that was giving him trouble. Wasn't really his thing.

Once done with his 'Auror work', Ronan stepped forward, spotting someone that looked to be about his own age. That should make things less awkward, right? Though, she didn't look familar to him...

"Waiting on someone?" he asked, stepping up beside the unknown woman with silent steps.

Nope. He, yes, he most certainly recognized this young lady and he wondered if it was too late - since he was staring just a tad, deer in headlights sort of awkwardness - to pretend to carry on as though he had never been walking right on by the pair.

"...Mr. Carter," he greeted. So much for discretion. "....Emilia. Congratulations on your new job."
She was humming to herself, gaze fixed on the minister who was making his rounds. She wondered what she'd say to him if he happened to come up to her. What did one say to the minister of magic, anyway? Truth be told, she didn't know much about the man, but he seemed kind. It was something about his eyes, she'd decided, and she liked to think she was a good judge of character...

The arrival of a guy who didn't look much older than her caught her off guard and the brunette probably looked a bit startled, although the look faded just as quick as it'd come, replaced by a polite smile. "No, just getting my bearings. Feels a bit like it's the first day of school and I need to pick a spot to eat lunch, only I don't know anyone." Did that sound silly? Probably, but it was true. The brunette tucked some hair behind her ear and then offered her hand. "I'm Emilia, by the way." Hi.

She would've said more, asked him what department he was with, but she felt eyes on her and it made her look around. Who she saw when she did made her shift uncomfortably from one foot to the other. She knew Andrei's uncle worked for the ministry, had known, but she never imagined she'd bump into him so soon. She wasn't really prepared for it, for how it'd make her feel, but here he was.

"Thank you, Mr. Flamsteed. I'm looking forward to training." She offered the man a small smile, recalling their first meeting, how awkward it had been. She imagined this was worse, considering.

Yikes.

Bryson wasn't the one to be in a large crowd of people, he usually avoided it all costs, he hated tight places and spaces they weren't his cup of tea. But...here he was, a newbie in a jungle filled with hungry wild animals, good thing he was a master at taming animals of all kinds. Chuckling a bit at his own joke, he looked around feeling the breeze rustled throigh his hair calming his nerves down. Don't get him wrong, he was very out going and friendly a true Hufflepuff to the core, but social gatherings jusf weren't his thing.

Grabbing a basket he shrugged, eh... at least there was food he couldn't argue with that he was starving. His blue eyes looking around the place, he decided to walk around it was nice and he loved this type of weather the cold and wintery days. It was a bit weird being back in London though, after spending some time in America with his brother, he gotten so used to the weather there that he wasn't used to the weather here but none the less he loved the winter time. He didn't know anyone here, how could he? He was a freaking newbie here but he was hoping to make some friends here, yeah... that would be nice.

This was nice. Darej could see others were arriving by the bunch, with some pairing off. He wasn't discouraged, if anything this allowed him to fall back and observe the events. He could see who had the leadership positions and who were displaying impressionable vibes. That was the genuinely nice part other than the scenery.

Darej decided to peek into his own basket to see if there were any treats. Hm.. Not bad. "Do they pack the same foods in every basket?" Asking aloud. Not that he was complaining, but the chance to trade treats was a tempting idea.

The wifey did do a lovely job in helping with this little picnic social. Schuyler adored a good picnic, especially when the weather was mild and the sun made occasional appearances from behind the London clouds. Anything that broke up the normal work routine was a plus in her eyes.

Woven picnic basket slung casually into the bend of her elbow, the woman perused the many options of pastries and fruit and other foods presented at the table. She wore a pair of slim, denim jeans, black boots, and an attractive, low point collar top beneath her jacket. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, into the basket. Evie was on a banana kick lately, and so two of those dropped into the basket almost immediately. Her selection was healthy for the most part, but those raspberry pie bars were just calling her name.

Her eyes spotted Olly with their daughter in her arms, and she moved that way. "Not too shabby, love," she praised, giving the Department Head a peck on the cheek. Evie's hair was working its way out of her bow, and so she promptly fixed that as well.

Bad timing all around. The one time in recent years that guests were allowed at a ministry event...families even encouraged...and here Simon was still very much alone. An emergency had kept his wife at her shop and the kids had already had rather exciting plans with the grandparents when the announcement of the picnic had been shared. Still, he was there to mingle and have a presence.

His gaze wandered around the park as he took a stroll. Always the watcher, he became aware of the various presences around. The minister of course, though the security man couldn't bring himself to bother the man no doubt having to speak with many throughout the day. Then Victoria, his friend from Games and Sports who didn't look the greatest. And finally his coworkers including Ronan and Alexa. Alexa, who he was still feeling awkward about with the department news.

Yeah...he was just going to enjoy the warmth in the winter for now.

Cassie was certainly among those young people without a family to speak off to invite to this event. Not that she was going to let it get her down. She debated grabbing a basket of the offered food, settling to explore for a bit beforehand. Maybe she would find a friendly face to join in the picnic activities planned for the orientation.

It was certainly nice to think they would be back in the swing of things as holidays could only be so enjoyable. Sometimes one itched to get back into the creative process.

Nathaniel looked around feeling a bit out of place still. He was extremely older than the young recent graduates joining the ministry as their first job. But he was younger than most of the department heads. And very much the Minister of Magic. Because of that he still felt extremely odd.

The Minister was making rounds he had indeed noticed that... but then again Nathaniel wanted to do just as well at the ministry as his own business. He would hate to let the man down. He knew his job would be chaotic because of the coming Quoddirch Cup. “Hello Minister. Thank you glad to be here.” As the Minister pat his shoulder he tried to not look annoyed.

Seeing his department head walking by he removed his hands from his pockets. “Hello Victoria, Nathaniel Flannagan, wanted to formally introduce myself before getting into all things Quidditch.” He tried to smile but felt something was off with his supervisor but didn’t want to get into it. How did one try to not come off rude when you didn’t even know how the person was feeling.

Olly was having similar thoughts to those James was having right now. They'd have to get along, what with working so closely together. Besides, so far he seemed alright. From what she'd seen. Which wasn't a whole lot, aside from the few times they'd met over the winter break to fix some things around their level in the Ministry. Hopefully he'd be as easy to work with in the future as well. They had quite a few collaborations lined up this year.

....he was earning MAJOR brownie points with Evie at the moment though.

Olly smiled at him when he addressed her daughter. "This is Evie." Say hello, Evie.

"......and this is Schuyler. My wife." She added when Schuyler joined them, leaning into her a little. It had been such a great idea to come to the park today, hadn't it? "This is James Draper, the new Creatures department head. I told you about him." Sort of. She'd surely MENTIONED him at home, yeah? If she hadn't, she trusted Schuyler NOT to bring that up.

"Did you get us food?" She was starting to get hungry.

Everywhere seemed to claim that they had the best coffee in London but it had taken her visiting seven different café’s and shops before she found coffee that wouldn’t make her Zia Ciosa roll over in her future grave. And even it hadn’t been as good as the coffee she could purchase from Zia Ciosa’s café.

Still on the hunt for a better shop, the Italian was using café seven until she found something better.. But the coffee was hot, and it didn’t taste bad it just wasn’t as good as what she had been drinking in Italy.

However, right now she needed to find Eliora in the crowd - after all, one of the two coffees in her hands was for her. Black. As strong as they could make it. One sugar. The fact they drank the same coffee gave her hope for the future. Coffee was important. Eliora understood this, they could thrive on that.

Finally spotting her Department Head with her son, she smiled and moved over to her - wedge-heeled boots suddenly feeling like the best thing ever as she moved over the grass. Thin heels would have just been a pain on the grass. ”Ciao.” She said with a smile, crouching down on the picnic matt to the side of Eliora. ”I bring coffee.” Holding one of the large containers out, she grinned a little. She was the best assistant, right?

[Zia is the Italian word for aunt. <3 ]
Eliora exchanged a few stern words with her ten year old son who had started to run around and act like a fool. She'd let him know exactly what she thought about his behaviour and let him return to sulk under a nearby tree. He'd been given the option to stay at home with Briar, but chose to come. So she expected his best behaviour and he was already testing her patience. Eliora expected that this was the behaviour he was encouraged to perform when with his father in New York and yet she was left picking up the pieces of it for the rest of the year. Discouraging.

Her bad mood flickered when she was presented with coffee and Guilia got some sort of a smile. "Smart choice." She said, gesturing to the basket of food on her blanket. "Help yourself, Barsi. I'm not hungry anymore." Nerves, as it were. She could feel her stomach turning over on itself. These events had always been something she could show up to for ten minutes and then head home because of a childcare emergency, but.. what with her new role.. that wasn't exactly encouraged.

Promotions, hey?

With the loudest of laughs, Theophilus announced his presence and stretched out to lay on a bright red blanket. Bright like his personality. Loud like his volume. And covered in food like his belly wanted. Calling out loudly, he beckoned a couple of people over. "Cakes here! I got the cakes! And I'll share 'em!" Or trade them. Cakes for other good foods. Maybe sandwiches... it depended on their filling. Maybe a salsa dance right here. Maybe maybe.

For now, though... Theophilus cut himself a large slice of both chocolate fudge cake and carrot cake.

Large. Slice.

Amidala Kit Barlow, new to this environment not having been to London at all before. Applying for a job at the Ministry of Magic was a HUGE step froward, but actually getting hired was a true dream come true! The last two years of her life have been turbulent and now since deciding leaving the States a fresh new start felt so surreal and kind of exciting. But it also meant having to do things alone, as an introvert it really didn't matter. But in events like these perhaps it did. One could never truly be used to the cold in Ami's point of view that is, the tiny blue veins appeared so vibrant in her pale skin and her cheeks needed absolutely no rouge after all they had a natural shade of pink from the chill of January. But in loo of her chilly predicament she couldn't turn down food! Her stomach growled with hunger. Sandwiches and coffee will do. Glancing around, taking a bite off her sandwich, she inspected her surroundings getting familiar with all the Ministry people she was soon to meet.

Amrita was absolutely ready for another year of work, especially if it meant she'd get out of the house for more than an hour at a time. Also because there weren't many things to punch at home, and much fewer in her mother's home where many things were extremely fragile and several Very Expensive Vases had already been broken. Perks of having a child who'd just learned to walk, probably.

Said child was on her hip, playing happily with her sunglasses (and occasionally poking her in the face with them, what an angel) and gurgled happily when Amrita had to bend to pick up a picnic basket. "Isn't it a nice day for a picnic, Jasmine? Are you excited?" she asked, only to be met by more gurgling as she weaved through the slowly thickening crowd. Now, if she could find someone she recognised, it would be grea--

There was Benzi. She'd been planning to simply stand by him until he noticed, given that she'd always been good with stealth, but turned out that stealth just wasn't a genetic trait. To be given away by one's one-year-old screaming "AAA BEEEEEEE" was truly one of the world's greatest cruelties.

Whoops.

Meanwhile, Ariadne had taken leave of her brother, citing the fact that she saw someone she recognised and excusing herself from the picnic blanket. She had thought it a good escape from the crushing boredom of being home with no children to speak of, but her brother's endless gushing over Hugo and Cordelia had only sent an unpleasant wave of jealousy nausea through her stomach.

Now she would either have to wait for someone she did recognise to make themselves known or latch on to someone vaguely familiar and pretend to have known them. The several years of quidditch did seem to make her seem familiar to total strangers, even though she hadn't been on a poster in over five years.

The fact that Draper had not changed one bit over the years was something that had not shocked Yoongi. He had not changed much either, well apart from landing a research job and that he had gotten even better looking over time. He still wondered why no one had made a statue of him yet...one could stand in this park to brighten the place up.

Hyland.... So he wanted to keep the formalities between them? That was a hundred percent fine with him. It felt more natural anyway. "We haven't seen each other in eight years and i don't even get an "How've you been?" " he was HURT. Ok he wasn't. Frankly he didn't care either. "You dislike me that much?" Again. Mock hurt

The twenty five year old checked his watch to see the time before he looked around. He had seen some of his colleagues but he still had no idea who his new Department Head would be. And he didn't want to ask Draper either because he could already picture his scoffing reaction. So nope, not asking him.

When he spoke again and said that it was a surprise, Yoongi looked back at him. What had he meant with that? For some reason he had the feeling that it was meant in a mocking way and he automatically crossed his arms in response. "Why's that?" he asked.

Not planning on greeting his fellow Law Enforcement employees just yet, Kevin had decided to walk around first. He wasn't on patrol or anything, he just wanted to enjoy the last time he'd be able to be in the park before going back to the pensieve room.

Kicking a lose pebble on the ground, the ex-Gryffindor kept his hands in his pockets and kept walking until he stopped out of boredom and looked around. His stomach wasn't growling in hunger but the sight of a woman biting in to a sandwich made him want to get one as well. "Hello" he greeted. Look at him being polite! He was getting better and better at this!

.....now what?

As Amidala made conversation with herself in her mind whilst working on her THIRD slice of sandwich and SECOND cup of coffee the voice of a fellow gentleman caught her attention. Looking up from her cup of coffee she made eye contact with the owner of the voice. "Oh Hello." She greeted in response, setting down her sandwich to swiftly remove her left glove to shake hands with the gentleman. The red head's serious demeanor didn't do her justice whatsoever! Though it wasn't so easy to crack a smile it did not mean she was in any way displeased or mad. "I'm Amidala. Who must you be, sir?" Amidala's voice was light as snow, radiating politeness and professionalism.

Technically Milo had come with his family to this family-oriented Ministry event. But his family in tow consisted of his sister, the department head, so not exactly kids and a wife, but it worked for him. They probably wouldn't stay long anyway, since it was more obligatory to make an appearance, but they could be social. More him than her, most likely.

As he followed Kendra to presumably get a picnic basket or blanket or whatever they were doing, a shouted voice caught his attention. Oh... it was that strange lady that liked to stick her fingers in tea. What a weirdo.

He grabbed a picnic basket and sat down on one of the sheets. He didn't have any family with him, so he hoped someone would sit down with him.
In contrast to Milo, Kendra did have a child that she could have brought to this family picnic, but Noémi was at an age where she couldn't be bothered. She couldn't exactly fault her for already having plans and she wasn't going to force her teenage daughter to come with her. Her younger brother was sufficient enough company. They'd likely do enough of their own socializing within their own respective departments anyway. At least as long as they stayed.

For now, she was hungry. Thankfully she wasn't cold, even if it was currently freezing in London. The atmosphere charms set around their event were a godsend. But still, she reached for a heated blanket when she went to get the picnic basket, then turned back to her brother. Where.... where was he?

As she looked around to see where Milo went off to, Kendra's eyes landed on a man sitting on his own blanket as his hands were shaking terribly. Was he really that cold to be shivering so violently? Merlin, that looked uncomfortable.

"Are you alright?" she asked with a slightly raised eyebrow. Did they need to adjust some of the heating charms?

Lyra was peering up at the sky, contemplating getting up and going to find someone to talk to. His hands were shaking a little less, but he was just so nervous. This new job was his first out of school and it was exactly what he wanted.

Seeing someone come towards him, he turned around. She looked concerned. Was the shaking that noticeable? "Oh! I'm fine, just a little nervous. This is my first job out of university." What if she asked about his department? He didn't know of he was supposed to use his cover or his actual department with people inside the ministry. "I don't really have any family to bring with me, so it's kind of hard."

Bear made his way to the park, rubbing his hands together furiously. He'd forgotten his gloves. Again. Of course.

Thankfully, as he entered the designated spot for the Ministry event, the warming charms kicked in, and he could feel his frozen fingers beginning to come back to life. It had... Been a while. Or at least, it felt like it.

He'd been at the Ministry for five years now, though technically three of those years had been spent on sabbatical. He'd returned fairly recently, but he still didn't feel settled. Leadership was shifting, and he barely knew anyone anyway. Well, maybe this event would be helpful for networking. (Ugh, networking. What a pretentious term.)

May as well grab a basket.

She had things to do. Arguably more things now, than rubbing elbows with people she didn't know or particularly like and had no invested interest in.

Lex had one arm looped with Fox's and her other hand holding on to Emmerson who'd been all too thrilled at not being left behind this time. Why the kid found any joy in being taken along to boring ministry functions was beyond her but this was a "family event" and the kid had a bounce in her step as she pulled them along. She wanted to pick a blanket, she wanted to carry the basket--Merlin you could swear this was just them on a trip and it might very well have been for the little girl.

Alexa allowed herself to be dragged toward an empty blanket, looking around for any of her MLE-ers. None yet and she didn't blame them. They probably had better things to do than sit back and pretend the Wizarding World was taking the day off to allow them celebrations. "I guess it could be worse." She conceded, taking a seat and allowing the little girl into her lap. "Could be another dinner event. I'd have to see you in a suit and do nothing about it." And she'd have to be far too overdressed for her own liking. The more formal gatherings were decidedly the worst.

Emmerson was AAAALLLL grins in her best picnicking dress and pigtails with her favourite ribbons to match. It wasn't all the time that her mummy said she could come to work stuff with her and while she didn't hate being left with Ezra at the manor, she loved all the times she COULD go out with her. Even more, Fox was there, so it was double lucky.

The 6 year old placed the basket down and threw herself liberally into her mother's lap. Emmerson reached across to nudge Fox with her foot, bright green eyes wide with the excitement of this WHOLE THING. "Wanna hear a secret?" The little girl whispered loudly. Her mummy told her what was happening later, and it made her all the more excited.
Fox sat down with his favourite duo and looked down at himself. No suit, no, but the linen shirt, chinos, and matching leather belt/shoes combo was still delectable enough wasn't it? Even if he maybe should've made more effort with buttoning said shirt up properly and lining up buttons with their appropriate button holes. Overall he was rocking the expensive cruise ship vibe. Totally fitting for this so called "summer" picnic. The warming charms were great, for the record.

"I can not-put-a-suit-on later for you too if you like, Dollface." Fox said, giving her a toothy grin before promptly having his attention stolen by Emmerson.

"Mercy Mercy me!" He exclaimed, using his special nickname for her. He leaned in. "Yeah tell me, whisper it in my ear!"

She gestured to the spot beside her and moved her picnic basket over some, making room.

Yikes.

Had he startled her? Well, he had been doing well in his stealth and tracking training. In fact, his trainer had said that he reminded him of someone....

He returned Emilia's smile with one of his own, taking her offered hand for a quick handshake. "Yeah, I know that feeling." he replied, letting go of her hand. "I'm Ronan." Before he could say anything else, though, one Airey Flamsteed appeared. He still wasn't sure how he felt about the man after the events with the whole Encephelon incident, but he could still be polite. "Mr. Flamsteed," he returned the greeting with a nod.

Was it just him, or was there a lot of awkwardness in the air right now? Though, instead of throwing him off, it simply made him curious as to the source. Call it an Auror thing.

Autumn rummaged in the picnic basket she had grabbed earlier, curious to see what was inside. Mmm, foooood. Arguably the best part about a picnic. Because she was preoccupied with the food, she was oblivious to the man's astonishment at her behaviour. She did look up however, when he introduced himself.

"Oh I'm in Gobstones as well! Nice to meet you, Jacob. My name is Autumn, I'm a returning Regulations Officer." She said with a wide beam and extended her hand for a handshake. She could not recall seeing this guy before and she did make sure she knew all of her colleagues within her department, so he must have joined while she was away. She was secretly hoping he recognised her name - y'know, maybe the bosses could have mentioned her in passing as an exemple of a perfect employee or something.

She knew people would be staring and talking, at least some of the ministry employees would. Her and Cossy were inseparable. They both had run for minister at different times with the other by their side. People knew they were together and expected to see them both, but that wasn't happening and she had to face that fact and move on.

What she hated to admit was that it could be her. After three failed, how could she not assume it was. Feeling sorry for herself she stopped before going in and took a deep breath, this was not the full confident always happy department head everyone knew and she had to shake this before she stepped fully in.

Taking a few deep breaths she put a smile on her face and looked around as she headed into the park.

"Hello" she greeted the people as she passed.
She looked up as Jacob greeted somebody else... Victoria! Her new Department Head! It was good to see a familiar face around.

Except she looked different somehow. She was not her usual confident and cheerful self. On the contrary, even though she had a smile on her face, she appeared unhappy. Autumn was slightly concerned, but was not going to ask personal questions. ”It's great to see you again, Victoria." She said politely with a small wave.

"I'm Bryson, obviously new here, Beast Protection Officer." he said. He felt like he had a important job, but who really knew.

Either way he was happy, and glad to be back home where he belonged, well... this wasn't his home town but none the less he was happy. Not that America wasn't great, just felt out of place there like he didn't belong with his accent.

Just the mention of fried chicken was starting to stir up Darej's appetite. Checking his basket there did happen to be a few seasoned drumsticks among other delicacies like ribs, potatoes, and some sweets.. He grinned, "Looks like a lucky day, there's a few drumsticks and spare ribs in mine." Offering out a hand to shake, "Huh, isn't that something. I was hired as Beast Enforcement Officer." What nice coincidence. "Darej, by the way. It's nice to meet you Bryson." Now he wasn't the only new person in his department.

What was there next? "Are you also new to this region?" Darej just took note on him mentioning being new. "I had lived in Russia for a number of years so it's a bit of a change returning here." Some things stayed the same, naturally not everything did.

Caleb turned after he swallowed a bite of egg to someone talking to him.
"Yeah, I reckon," he said. "A bit boring though," Caleb shrugged. He glanced at his plate of crisps and two sandwiches (One of them half eaten) as a silent offer if he wanted it.
"My name's Caleb," he said and offered a hand.

Boring? Griffin looked around, "I guess, but did you come with someone? " He didn't think it was all that boring and there was fun to be had if you had people with you, but what if he was alone and that was why it was no fun. "I mean you could join my husband and I if you need some company. Not sure if we'd make it anymore fun, but it's a start."

Picking up one of the baskets he looked around to see what else was going on. "Are you a new employee or returning? It's so big sometimes that it's hard to know everyone. I'm Griffin by the way."

SPOILER!!: Charles

They had had a scare last year, which thankfully had proven to not be the tampering of any food in the food court, but one could never be too careful. Though what was truly weighing on the Minister's mind was more to do with January and that situation more so than the potential of food being spiked with something.

Because he was confident in the new security measures preventing such from happening.

And one thing the man was going to start fussing at people about was all this separation and lack of mingling. It was defeating the purpose of the event! Though he did plenty of mingling for the rest of them as it were. Which was precisely what the Minister was doing now, weaving among the crowd and shaking hands with anyone who would accept his outstretched one. "Greetings and salutations one and all!" his voice bellowed in greeting to one and all before he strolled around making a few individual ones. Of course, January was noticed. Impossible to miss his right hand AND he was quite keen to see their newest addition to their team. How would they fare as a trio instead of a duo? He was very interested to find out.

Stag or not, there would be no hiding from one Charles Hollingberry for you, James Draper. "James, good to see you, my boy," the man greeted with his usual twinkle. Ryunosuke had been very displeased with him when he had heard that the Minister had hired 'the likes of Draper,' but Charles was sure that his son's pettiness from his Hogwarts days was showing. Nothing to fret about. "Try to smile. This is a picnic, not a funeral."

There were plenty of other employees, new and old, about as well and Charles did his best to at least make brief eye contact with them. Particularly the likes of Nathaniel Flannagan, who Charles knew about considering the importance of that division with the coming World Cup. "Mr. Flannagan, welcome," he greeted the young man with a firm hand to his left shoulder. And a pat. A few pats. Pat pat pat.

AH! And there was Cambridge now with...whoever that gentleman was. But more importantly than that was the little girl along with here. "Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiss Emmerson!" he called out, crouching down with his arms out to either side. He was expecting a hug, you see.

He also, of course, caught the somewhat sullen presence of Victoria. He would need to sit down and have a chat with her over some tea later. Another check-in, of sorts.

-------------------

Airey was present and accounted for and certainly not sulking. At least, he was pretending to not do so. It was disappointing not having Maddox for a colleague anymore and having to put up with Draper instead but the Mysteries department head was dealing.

Dealing in that he was unable to sit still and was presently walking around sans mingling. Which was how he happened upon Ronan speaking with a young woman who he did not......oh. Oh. OH.

Seeing as she had just gotten there Victoria wished she would have asked Alana to join her, but she was at her dad's, Helena was off in another country, and Bart his own family, though she probably could have invited them. They wouldn't have minded tagging along with mum.

Looking around she noticed Charles make eye contact with her. Not the person she wanted to seem not on top of her game, so putting a smile on her face she walked over to him. "Hello minister, this has turned out very nice." Victoria had been with the ministry so long that she had seen her fair share of flops and successes, this one was on the top of her list of likes.

SPOILER!!: Jacob

She wasn’t going to judge though instead she smiled acknowledging the other woman as she got closer. "Hello Megan, I’m good and thank you. You don’t look too bad yourself, are you going out after the orientation event is over to show off that beautiful dress of yours?" Noting that the park was filling up with other employees around them Laurel asked. "Did you have a good break?"

Jacob had after some searching found a good spot of grass to put his blanket and picnic basket down on. The 26 year old guy had just settled down on his blanket and was about to check the content of the basket, wondering if there was an timeplan for the event when he was interrupted by a woman’s voice.

Why did hearing those words sting so much. Taking a deep breath she turned with a smile, "Jacob, hello, did you have a wonderful break?" Many of her employees would have had the entire time off, but she knew most of her quidditch ones were still working hard. It was good to know that they enjoyed their time off though, "Ready for the trading to open up?" Gobstones wasn't as crazy during trading as quidditch, but they still needed to be on top of their game.

SPOILER!!: Nathaniel

It was always lovely to meet the new employees, yes, she would remember them from interviews, but now it wasn't a formal get to know you interview meeting. No, this was more relaxed, because they already had the job. "Hello Nathaniel, it is a pleasure to meet you. I hope you are ready for work." It was a bit of a joke, but a tone of serious, the World Cup was coming and everyone had to be ready to jump right in once they were back.

"Are you having a good time? Bring some family with you?" Not knowing much about her newer employees it was a good time to get to know them.

Giving Autumn a smile as well she was glad to see so many of her employees here. "Autumn hello, having a good time I hope?" It was getting busier and more and more employees. Looking around she wasn't sure if Autumn had brought anyone, but she didn't want to be rude, 'Did you come alone today?" Victoria was obviously alone, so it didn't seem to rude to ask, maybe some of her employees wouldn't mind her sitting with them if they were alone as well.
