NOT-SO-Mismatched Seating

This secret coffee niche, tucked into a caved-in passage behind a tapestry of Gellert Grindelwald and the Sign of the Deathly Hallows on Level 10, was nearly empty when it was first spotted. Over time, employees have been dragging in seating they've either scavenged or donated, leaving plenty of seats available. None of them match.

Take a seat on a crooked, squishy sofa, or pull up one of the kitchen chairs or stools that line one stone wall. Choose wisely - no one is really sure where these seats came from. At least someone has pulled in a few lamps and endless strings of Christmas lights to give the room a festive look.
as also seen renovations. Gone are the mixed matched chairs and cushions and in are the ornate in opulence solid beech wood upholstered gold and silver leaf patine finished sofas, chairs, and benches. Perfect for lounging in luxury and having a delectable cup of coffee with a VIP colleague.

As if this had ever been a secret to Eliora... She didn't care for the coffee she could get here, because she liked the coffee she got from her own department a thousand times better. But, she did enjoy the quiet here. And sometimes she brought her paperwork here to avoid her employees being annoying and wanting her to make decisions for them. They knew that they were adults, right? They knew that they were supposed to be independent? That they had been hired for their skill and not their need for being babysat?

SHE WAS NOT A BABYSITTER.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Her children needed to understand that too. Briar-Rose was also an adult and very close to graduating. Which meant that she needed to have an income soon. But of course, Eliora suggesting that had gone over like a sack of potatoes to the brain and every single day was an argument. Hence why she was coming into work before 6am and leaving after 9pm unless she was getting dinner with friends. Actually, some nights she wasn't even leaving the Ministry. Here was decent enough to sleep if she wanted to avoid being found.

Parenting was stressful.

But not stressful enough that she couldn't get a sleep in at work.

So by 7pm her legs were up on a sofa and Eliora was snuggled into a pillow asleep. Good and night.

She'd rambled during much of the lift ride, talking mostly about her time at the ministry. It felt like a safe topic, not too personal or emotionally driven, one that she could speak confidently about. Truth be told, she was a little afraid of what she might say if she did allow a silence to drag on, something that had been such a comfort back when they were younger. She'd never felt more comfortable sitting next to someone and not saying a word before she met Andrei and now the thought of that happening was scary. It's funny how time had an ability to change something like that.

After securing them each a mug of coffee, thankful she'd been clued in to leave some of her own down here for occasions such as this, she lead him over to the seating area. "It's eclectic, I'll give it that." A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she looked around at the seating, forever amused by the collection of chairs. "Take your pick...just maybe not the orange one. I think that's the one with the spring that pokes out." She'd decided on a plaid arm chair that looked dated and like it had been collected from some sweet old couple who'd cover their furniture in plastic wrap to keep it from getting dirty.

And he absorbed every syllable she was willing to share with him. He would be a fool to waste this time, seeing how long it had been since he had last heard her voice...and it not be completely full of disdain towards him. So he said very little, completely content in hearing her stories and how she was doing. He was reluctant to share about himself anyway and delve into the time he had spent captive by the Dark fae.

"I am finding it impossible to imagine my uncle in here," he admitted as he took the mug from her, wafting the scent and smiling a little to himself. Glances around a bit and settles on a chair with an obnoxious floral pattern on it that reminded him very much of his great grandmother just off to the left of Emilia's selection. "Thank you, for the coffee."

Emilia looked around, trying to picture Mr. Flamsteed spending time here. The thought made her smile softly down at her coffee before she took a small sip. "Oh, I don't know. Some things make me think he marches to the beat of his own drum." Truth be told, she liked that about him, even if it was terribly awkward seeing him around the ministry. She never knew what to do, what to say. A polite smile was her go-to.

She turned the slightest bit in her chair so she could see him better, shaking her head when he thanked her. "It's the least I could do, you coming all this way." She trailed off, allowing herself to commit this version of Andrei to memory. Sitting by her in a comical floral chair, sipping hot coffee and looking...content? Happy? Whatever it was, it suited him. She wanted to remember him like this. She hoped she could.

"This is a bit weird, isn't it?" Her voice was soft when she broke the silence, child-like almost.

sweetpinkpixie 11-24-2019 09:53 AM

Has to have a chuckle at that, because she was not wrong. His uncle was one of the most peculiar people he had ever met and his position had brought him to the far corners of the world and back. His uncle had a very...charismatic eccentricity about him, one he had not encountered anywhere else.

Much like the young woman before him was quite unlike anyone else he had ever encountered. A magnificent creature of her own pedigree.

Rolls his shoulders a bit, his muscles sore from manual labor and other unrelated stresses, and manages to relax a bit more in his seat as he took another sip from the coffee. "If by weird you mean to imply that there is a very palatable discomfort about this situation...then, yes, I have to agree. And it is unfortunate," he nodded as he set his cup down on his thigh. "But...it is only to be expected...considering everything." Manages a small smile over at her, another one of deep apology and regret for things, dark memories, that he could not take back or make the sting feel any less poignant. "But I am glad I came. It gives me some peace seeing how you have overcome and are flowering."

Though that felt like far too delicate a term as well as a bit too predicable in phrasing.

Emilia nodded, wondering if it was possible to tuck that part of the past away neatly in a box somewhere and move on with a clean slate. She wanted that, had been working towards it for a long time, and maybe she was getting close. She'd lasted this long without crying, after all. She even offered him a small smile in return, one that said she knew he was sorry, that she was too.

Flowering was such an Andrei way to put it and honestly, she wondered if a word like that fit her anymore. It was nice to hear all the same. "I'm a fighter, overcoming is what I do." Her smile softened and she tucked some hair behind her ear, randomly thinking of Bast, thinking of how he'd be proud of her in this moment. All those things he'd tried to tell her back then seemed to finally have sunk in.

"You seem like you're doing well for yourself, too. It's good. I...I always wanted that for you." Just for him to be happy. Feeling those emotions bubbling up again, she took another sip of her coffee and washed down the lump in her throat.

sweetpinkpixie 12-02-2019 01:32 PM

To him...it wasn't possible and it shouldn't be. What had happened was a reminder of what he could become, the path his father had quite literally shoved him down for most of his childhood. There was far too much regret and he felt it in the earliest hours of the morning almost daily when he went out for his morning routine and caught a glimpse of the stars before they faded against the sky as the sun illuminated it. But he had made his peace with it, with himself, and that was all he could truly ask for.

Anything else, he felt, was too selfish a request.

"That it is," smiles a little as he observes her. "Except for those boat rides during our early years at Durmstrang. I am not sure my fedora ever truly recovered from those times, but it was more than willing to offer its services." And would do so again in a heartbeat with no regret.

This was...his attempt at adding a bit of humor into the tense air, a reminder that there had been more than the hurt he had caused.

"I am learning," he nodded sagely, taking another sip himself. "Though it took some time for my injuries to heal, which meant I was trapped behind stacks of paperwork and official documentation...occasionally I would get to stretch my limbs and train the new recruits. It's where I have mostly settled into now."

His fedo-Oh.

Emilia's eyes widened slightly, her cheeks turning pink as she recalled those trips on the ship that sent her stomach turning in the most unpleasant way. She couldn't believe he remembered that and she laughed, covering her face briefly in embarrassment. "Your poor hat. Merlin, I was such a mess. I can't believe I let you see me like that." Not that she'd had any control over the situation. Shaking her head, she smiled at him. "Those were the days."

"I can't imagine that was easy, being stuck behind a desk. I'd have gone stir crazy." She found herself studying him again, gaze falling on the little that she could see of his scars as a hint of a smile graced her lips. "I could see that. I bet they look up to you, the recruits. You being so much older and wiser than them." She emphasized the older, her own attempt at being funny. Her gaze fell on his face again as she lifted her mug, taking another sip of her coffee.

Smiles fondly at her, at the memories. They seemed like centuries ago and almost like two different people. It was...peculiar how life could turn out. "I can it," chuckles a little under his breath while taking another sip from the mug of coffee. "You trusted me with that side of yourself." Something he almost felt as though he had taken for granted in the years that followed. Something he lamented the absence of now.

He did not miss the charm in her next comments and even ran a hand through his hair to pull some of the rich chocolate locks forward as though inspecting for grey hairs. "Most look up to me in a more literal sense." He did...tend to tower over people now, which was a curious juxtaposition to the small feeble boy who played the flute. "Sitting behind a desk never suited either of us...and it shows," gestures between the two of them, the paths in life they had taken. "But...besides work...how have you been?"

Information he...rather yearned to know. Whatever she was willing to offer.

"Yeah.." She had trusted him, probably more than anyone outside of her family at that time in her life, and sometimes she regretted giving so much of herself to him. After everything, it left her feeling exposed in a way that she wasn't sure he'd ever understand. That had always been Emilia, though. She didn't do things by halves. If you had her, you had all of her. She wondered if that was a flaw. Maybe it was.

"I bet." He'd gotten so much bigger, taller. Her transformation had been far less impressive, still the small sprightly girl she'd always been. She was stronger now, though. So much stronger. She was proud of that much. Lucky we both found jobs that allow us to escape the paperwork, at least for a little while." They were lucky in that way, the two of them.

She was a little less eager to discuss this part of her life, did he know? It wasn't that she was unhappy outside of work, that wasn't the case. It was just that she didn't have much to share. "Well, I got a small flat for myself. It's a hole in the wall, really, but I fixed it up pretty well." It had been a disaster when she found the place, but now it fit her like a glove. It was home, at least for now. "And I've made these amazing friends here. They drag me out after a long week, make sure I'm not spending all my time working and training." She offered a small smile, shrugging her shoulders. That was about all. She refrained from mentioning her grandmother's health or the fact that she'd taken on the role of her caregiver, as that was not something she cared to discuss. There was also the small fact that she wished she could say she'd found love, that she was serious with someone who thought she was the sun, moon, and stars in his sky, but she hadn't. That was a fail, wasn't it? Not being able to say that to someone who'd broken your heart. Rosie would say so, she was sure. It was for that reason that she was scared to ask him about his life outside of work, but that's what you did in polite conversation, wasn't it? And so she did.

"How are things for you?" She glanced at him, bracing herself for whatever she was about to hear.

sweetpinkpixie 12-26-2019 08:34 PM

And that was what had drawn him to her to start, what had helped push him out of his shell crafted in formalities and suppression. She had taught him how to do that himself...and, perhaps, he had not been ready to learn and take on the lesson. He hadn't been as strong as he thought, not as composed. He was now, so he hoped.

Smiles at her words, certain urges causing his fingers to twitch but it would be inappropriate and he had already pushed the boundaries a bit too far by embracing her and holding her against his chest. "As well as make a difference in something greater than ourselves, contributing to something," he added with thoughtful insight as his chestnut brown eyes took her in a bit more.

He felt as though she were holding back, perhaps not in the details of her life but with...something else, but did not press nor pry. He chuckled a bit under his breath at the mention of training - though the relief in her having people was a prominent undertone. Not that he doubted her ability to draw others to her, Emilia had always been immaculate in that sense. "I still share a place with Asmund. A colleague of mine at the Russian Ministry. We were at Durmstrang together though we ran very different circles there." So it was unlikely that she would recall the pale haired fellow. "Still a bit reclusive with a finite group of friends, though it expands a little on occasion because of my uncle's introductions to his former pupils. I somewhat recently taught one of them the basics of elemental magic." Which was what his fire bending and taming was all rooted in. "....and I still have not picked up a flute since...that time."

"Trying, anyway." Emilia wasn't so sure that she'd contributed anything of importance up to this point, but she was trying hard every day to prove herself and maybe that was enough for now.

"His name doesn't sound familiar," The brunette confessed, unsuccessfully trying to put a face to the name. "Do you two get on well?" It was strange thinking of all the people he had in his life now that she didn't know, probably wouldn't ever know. People he was giving pieces of himself to. She supposed it was the same for her and she wondered if it made him feel the same things she was. "I can picture it, you teaching your elemental magic. That look of concentration on your face..." She smiled a little, looking down for a moment and shaking her head. "It's nice, passing something on that you're passionate about. It's sort of how I felt when I helped Sam with her combat. Maybe it's how Bast felt when he taught me." She looked thoughtful as she chewed her lip. "Anyway, it's a nice way to make a connection with someone. Are the two of you friends now, then?" Him and his uncle's former pupil, that is. She was curious. Also, she liked talking like this. It had been so long and she wanted to soak up every detail he was willing to share. There was relief, too. Relief in knowing that he'd found peace, or so it seemed. She'd wanted that for him.

At the mention of his flute, Emilia's expression softened and she reached for his hand without a second thought, just wanting to comfort him somehow. "Do you ever miss it? Just..playing to enjoy the music?"

DaniDiNardo 07-24-2020 11:26 AM

Simon ^^

No way, what was this place? He’d taken a left in the wrong place and was prepared to turn and head back toward the atrium but now...now this place had his attention and the boy found himself wondering why no one had ever told him about this. Why wasn’t this covered in the orientation?? He might have actually paid attention.

“This is wiiiiild.” Kodee walked further into this little hideaway and threw himself down on a particularly squishy couch. Circe, could he get Fletcher to get them a room like this on level one? Sure, they had the break room but there was something decidedly comfy about this place.

Know what? It reminded him of his own hideout back at his parents’ house. It was the sort of hideaway where you could get lost in a good comic book.

Not today, though. He was only on break and had to get back to his desk soon but he’d enjoy it while he could.

Holmesian Feline 08-05-2020 06:39 PM

Just because he wasn’t the coffee addict a lot of his coworkers could be, it didn’t mean Simon didn’t occasionally stop for a cup. At least as he got older. And the hidden gem of Level 10 also served as a nice reprieve when doing rounds and needing to step away from the hubbub. Which was precisely the reason the security head had headed there today, pausing for breath before making his way back up to one of his homes away from home.

Except as he stepped inside the alcove, it was proven it wasn’t a total escape with a gentleman already there. One of Fletcher’s people unless Simon was completely mistaken which wasn’t something that happened that often. What security men didn’t make it a point of knowing people. “Guess I’m not the only one in need of a retreat at the moment..." he mused.

DaniDiNardo 08-07-2020 10:46 PM

Kodee's head turned at the approach of the new guy, a wide grin spreading onto his face. "You could say that again. Mate, this place is amazing. Who made this? Not that it really matters, I don't care--hey, this isn't some kind of exclusive spot is it? I mean, I totally have permission, if that's the case but just wanted to make sure in case any strays stroll in." Playing it cool, as you do but hidden little gems like this were a delight in what could sometimes be a dull working day.

Kodee sprawled more liberally on the couch, feeling it could be a good place to catch up on a few minutes of sleep--not now, he was particularly wired at the moment, but at some other time.

"You on patrol or something?"

Oblivious as he was, Kodee did notice people in their roles if he saw them often enough. This guy was security. "Some big breech we shouldn't know about? You can tell me, I'll only tell a few other people tops."

Holmesian Feline 08-14-2020 09:24 PM

It was a bit of an oasis. Definitely more than the cursed food court and break rooms that weren’t always truly breaks from the job. “I honestly don’t remember.” It had certainly been here several years throughout Simon’s tenure, but who was responsible, at least who was the minister at the time it first popped up, escaped him at the moment.

Sometimes the years did run together.

As for exclusivity… “Nah, you’re safe. There aren’t any restrictions.” Else there would have to be rules somewhere and he’d have been aware as he could imagine people asking for handling of trespassers in that case.

The security head moved to prepare a cup of coffee as his companion seemed to be getting more comfortable in his surroundings. “Nothing wrong at the moment,” he admitted as he added a splash of milk for there was nothing to hide. Even if he wanted to make such a promise of secrecy that might not be so secret. “Which means such rounds are working.” It could feel redundant and duplicative at times but that was so they could catch anything out of sorts as soon as they could and rectify the situation before true trouble arose.

DaniDiNardo 08-17-2020 02:34 PM

Not restricted then. Great, because he'd already been threatened politely by the minister himself and knew he couldn't go around causing trouble. You show up in a restricted area one time and suddenly you needed to be watched and warned. Well, as it happened, Kodee Chosen now rather liked his job and his boss and wasn't trying to get fired. He was on the right side of whatever law was running this place.

This guy was apart of that law.

"Doesn't it get boring when everything's going right?" He asked, melting further into the couch. "I dunno, if I were you I'd be looking for chaos everywhere. A whole day doing nothing would drive me nuts." That may have had more to do with his inability to sit still for too long. He couldn't imagine protecting a place that didn't need protecting.

"Hey." Kodee straightened a little, lifting his head to look at him. "Were you one of the people on call when those blokes escaped Azkaban?"

That'd been the hugest scandal of the prior year. MLE must've been hella busy.

Holmesian Feline 09-02-2020 12:42 AM

Boring?

Simon snorted at that before he managed to catch himself. “Not really,” he said with a shake of his head as he finally took a seat. “Not when there has been a fair share of disasters and things to keep me more than busy plenty of times over the years. It makes the quiet, routine times worthwhile.” And helped keep you sane in the long run. Now if only the universe could be nice and do the balance on its own with days that are neither super crazy or outright boring and the security head would be totally fine with that.

He nearly cringed at the mention of the Azkaban escape. Yep…right there. An example of am insane time for MLE. It had been a huge fiasco for the department supposed to be keeping the wizarding world safe and it had only gotten worse when Alexa’s kidnapping had happened on their watch. “Yeah…” Simon said with a sigh and taking a sip. “Not a finest moment.”

ArianaBlack 09-09-2020 01:07 AM

for my dearest sworn enemy

Checking his watch for the third time in under a minute, Tomasz made his way into the caved-in passage. He still had some time for his break and all he really wanted to do was take a short nap and have a little bit of study time before having to return to his post. He enjoyed the days where he was positioned in the Atrium because it meant he could interact with people, but there was only so much interaction with strangers that he could handle before his limit was reached.

It also did not help that he hadn't been able to get one night of proper rest for the past couple of months. Unfortunately, there was no way to resolve this as he couldn't pinpoint the reason behind his poor quality sleep and coffee was not to his taste (which he only recently discovered). All of this to say that rest was necessary, but difficult to find.

The rest-pods were always occupied when he tried to use them, though it didn't matter very much as he felt it shameful to use them whilst wearing his security uniform. Though Simon had never said anything about it, Tomasz felt it may be in poor taste and he very much needed to keep this job. He was hoping to move up in rank eventually. Fortunately, he had discovered this little nook one of his first weeks on the job and whenever he needed to rest for a moment or two he always snuck his way over. There was a strange yellow chair (that look far more like a banana) that he had taken a liking to, and that's the chair he made his way to now.

Setting the book he had been carrying (an apparition exam guide) down on the table in front of him, he leaned his head back and let his body go limp. Despite keeping his eyes open, Tomasz hoped that if he stared at the ceiling for long enough, he would manage to fall asleep. For only five minutes, then he would take some time to study.

The Announcer 09-10-2020 11:07 PM

After a lot of screeching and squawking, the owl managed to flutter its way into this niche corner of the Ministry. Not many owls came here but this seemed to be urgent, since the receiver of the letter it was delivering was in this very room.

The owl dropped the letter on the receiver's lap before swooping up again. Instead of flying off, the owl started fluttering around the room as wildly as possible, almost as if it were trying to grab the attention of the people in the room. On top of this, it opened its beak and started its series of squawks and screeches. Even worse, there was something coming out of its other end. Something far worse than noise.

Have you brought an umbrella with you? You might need one.

Still exhausted, Tomasz thought he was imagining the squawking. The owls did not usually find themselves here and this was enough reason for Tomasz to doubt that one had made its way here now.

This was only the case for so long, however, because as the squawking continued, Tomasz had enough sense to really open his eyes. Rather confused, he looked around the room; his eyes followed the owl as it furiously fluttered about the room and flapped its wings. This was very strange. He instinctively withdrew his wand and stood up from the seat, looking around and leaving his book on the table.

Unfortunately he did not have an umbrella.

More unfortunately, whatever was dropping from the owl landed on his head. "Eee... No." Well. "What is it?!" He asked the owl, as if it would clarify the issue at hand.

Coffee was Kaiser's lifeblood. No exaggeration.

Slight exaggeration.

Point was, he had long past the point of wanting and craving the stuff, and it had now become more of a need. Especially when, what a coincidence, he still wasn't getting a whole lot of sleep either.

He'd got his cup o' caffeine already, and was now making a beeline for the one place he knew would be nice and quiet down here.

Well. Clearly he didn't know that, given there was an unholy racket coming from the place in question. Owl racket, though, so Kaiser was not totally deterred from forging onwards. He turned into the nook and- ... Oh man. In his coffee? The cup was abruptly abandoned even as he hurriedly stepped back again and took stock of exactly what was going on.

Right. Wand.

"Protego." Though it was clearly too late and therefore not exactly dire, Kaiser threw up a simple shield charm to protect his friend - and, by extention, himself - from anymore... deliveries. "Cześć, Tomasz. Did you spook it?" The owl.

new number, who dis?

Despite his lackluster wand skills, Tomasz was usually quick to react to such stimuli. Unfortunately, a combination of sleep deprivation and being shaken out of an attempted nap had made for incredibly slow reflexes.

..... And for the current situation on his head.

He groaned, silently cursing the bird, only to look up and see a friend. If it weren't for the circumstance, Tomasz would have replied to Kaiser with enthusiasm and a small (but warm) smile.

As it was, however, he simply shook his head, his movements exaggerated and strained as if someone had cast a slowing charm on his person. "No, I was resting." He threw his arm up to lazily (and with some irritation) motion to the yellow chair he had occupied at a time when the room was peaceful. "I do not know why it is so active." It had no letter in its beak. This made very little sense. The squawking was also driving him up the wall and Tomasz found himself pressing his hand to his ear to cover it (and, in turn, the ear cuff he was actually wearing for once in his life).

Looking back up to the owl, Kaiser frowned. He couldn't say he was particularly well versed in owl behaviour - any bird behaviour, really - never having owned one, or studied creatures, or even having sent a great amount of letters in his life. He was quite content to not get involved with dealing with the creature, but it was clear that its racket was bothering Tomasz.

"Should I try a Silencing Charm?" he asked his friend, clearly unsure. "Or maybe get someone." It seemed to Kaiser that the bird was trying to call attention to itself, or possibly announce its distress. The idea of taking its voice away from it in such a circumstance felt almost heinous.

But Tomasz.

Speaking of, he wasn't even sure how well Tomasz would be able to hear him, even with his voice raised up about the squawking. Maybe he was just making it worse.

And maybe if he'd been thinking clearly, he'd have known just the spell that might help. But that was just a pipe dream at this point.
