Second |  Discussion 9: What if Tonks wasn't a metamorphmagus?
Discussion: Do you think Tonks would have become a Auror if she wasn't a metamorphmagus? And what other career could you see her having?
We all know our precious Tonks isn't the most careful of witches. But, I'm sure her Metamorphmagusing had some influence on helping her become an Auror. But, why would she choose this career path? What, during her time at Hogwarts make her want to become an Auror?
For someone that wears Weird Sisters t-shirts and looks a bit like a punk, this doesn't seem like something she would go for. And she was the youngest Auror, so that means she probably didn't have any close friends around her that were her age (which also might explain why she's attracted to someone quite older).
If I could pick a different job for our dear Tonks I would picture her in a witch band or something. I could picture her rocking out on stage!
But, I'm glad for whatever reason she decided her to become an Auror because it brought her together with the beloved Lupin. Fate seemed to have a way of bring them together and maybe that's the only explanation to why she became an Auror.
So, please share your thoughts, here are a few of mine. |

Honestly, if Tonks' wasn't a metamorphmagus, I'd think her to be a rather boring character  I think the very fact that she is one puts some of the young energy and zest that she has  If she wasn't a metamorphmagus, she just might be that tired, worried, mouse-haired Tonks we all pitied and wanted to poke out of her 
As for being an Auror, it's just something that Tonks would naturally want to do, because she hates the dark side so much (for reasons unknown to me) and she could possibly be good at because of her talents | |

I definitely agree that Tonks wouldn't be as fascinating. But, I think she would be very different in general. I think she would definitely be more mature. But, just because she wouldn't have her metamorphmagusing doesn't mean she wouldn't still be clumsy, so I think that would add character as well.
I wonder if she would've still ended up with Lupin (her being an Auror)? I actually think because without her changing all the time and seeking attention, she would be more mature, like I said before. I think he might even go for her sooner because she would have that level of maturity. But, I also think her being a metamorphmagus might be something Lupin would find attractive. She could change the way she looks and on some level he can relate because he changes once a month. So, hmm...I really don't know how their relationship would've played out? | |

I completely agree. I hate to say it, but I think what makes Tonks so bubbly is her ability to change her appearance.
Had she not had this ability, I certainly do not believe she would have been an auror. I can see her as a healer just because she is so caring for life, or I can also see her as a wizard rocker.  | |

 I just hope she would have ended up as an Auror in the first place. She only passed certain things to get in because of her metamorphmagusing...so I'd think it would have been unlikely, unless if she decided to actually work for it  But Tonks is naturally lazy...
If she actually did become an Auror even without her talents, I'd figure Remus would talk to her more...but if her character is to be more demure...I think he'll find her less interesting. I think Remus needed someone that could make him smile and make the world brighter from his standpoint, and somewhat immature, bubbly Tonks did that for him | |

Ooh, I'm so behind... but good discussion so far! 
I don't think her being an auror had any impact on her bubbly self. That's her personality. She was a happy, carefree, hardworking, and loyal witch... she was also a Hufflepuff.
Her being a Metamorphamagi had some influence on her personality because she had fun with it. If she wasn't one, then she might not have been as bubbly or carefree as she was. She would have been, as someone mentioned, that unhappy - mousey haired witch that we saw in OotP. But because of her abilities, we get a friendly, clumsy Tonks ... who is fabulous! |

Hmm...Do you think that Tonks would have made such a big deal out of her name if she wasn't a metamorphmagus? I'm not sure if she would have had as much fight in her as she has now. I think part of the reason she hated the name was because it didn't sound cool enough If she thought being an Auror needed a cool name then she might have thought TONKS sounded better...like Superman  | |

Hmm, Yes Lari, I could see Tonks being like that... she needs this "hip, cool ring to her name" because she's an auror. She needs to have fun with fighting for what she wants; because if she's not having fun then I do not think she would really & truly be living.
She is who she is... and well, honestly, I think it would be interesting to check her name and birthday out with the core numbers in Arithmancy. (perhaps I will do that later in the week after my exams are over) | |

Jess, what a good idea, to check her numbers out and find out more about her through Arithmancy!
I agree with most of you, she is much more fun loving and lovable because of the fact that she is a metamorphagi so, in some senses, this makes her who she is. I'm sure she would have still been clumsy, probably just an ordinary witch, though, not someone who would stand out in anyone's mind. While she might have fallen in love with Remus, I don't think she would have made the effort to win him over and they probably would have never gotten together. I don't even know that she would be an auror at all. She would have been likely to pursue the field of healing, something she was pretty much a natural at, I think, or like a lot of you have said, I think she would have made an awesome and amazing rock star. She would have found a way to have the pink hair and be a stand out. That's just what Tonks is all about. Metamorphagi or not, she will always be a star. | |
