hmmm. i read CoS again about a year ago, and I really can't remember the book ever stating how the Malfoy's obtained Dobby. Me thinks that Dobby is a bit like Kreacher, the elf had been in the family for years. I think Lucius/Narcissa enhearited Dobby.
