Default Memories and the Pensieve?

I have been pondering this for quite some time, and I thought maybe you all had some thoughts on the matter:

When you give a memory to someone for the Pensieve, do you lose the memory since you gave it away, or is it just a "copy" of the memory? If that makes sense to anyone....any thoughts?

I dont really know what to think, so I'm interested to see what opinions are in your minds.

I've thought about this one too. My own thinking is that it is just a copy, and that you still retain the original. But, because things can be forgotten over time if you want to preserve it before you forget bits you can copy and store in a pensieve. Or, copy and share with others.

I guess the alternative could be useful though. Being able to completely purge unpleasant memories... but our past is who we are.

I think that it's just a copy as there are other spells used to modify memories (e.g. removing them). For example, Kingsley removes part of Marietta Edgecombe's memories.

The alternative could prove to be useful but maybe it wouldn't be the best idea though.

I would imagine that's its just a copy. Maybe some people don't want to lose their memory of something important and that has had a huge impact in their lives, but they are to give it away (for somebody else to see)

I don't think it's just a copy. I tink when you put a memory in the pensieve you can't just recall it unless you check out the pensieve - but I also think that once you've looked at the memory in the pensieve you've got it back, because yoou've just witnessed it again, if that makes sense?

I think so because Dumbledore once said, it must have been in book 4, that the Pensieve is there (forgive me if these aren't his excact words), for when you feel that your mind is too full and your brain needs some rest. So it would make sense, taht in order to get "relief", you don't have the memory in your head once you put it into the Pensieve.
