I have heard that the occupation of Harry's parents will play a major part in the next two books. I was wondering what opinions people have on the types of jobs they could have had. I thought maybe James was Minister of Magic before fudge because it mentions that Dumbledore was offered the job but refuse which led Fudge to become Minister of Magic. The new position cant have happened very long ago because ron knew about it. Please post you opinions of James and Lilys jobs.

I think that I read before that James Potter didn't work in any thing. I think Aunt Margi or Aunt Petunia said that but I really don't remember correctly..We don't know if Lily and James were working or not but We are sure about that they were working for the OOTP.

James couldn't have been the minister of magic, he was too youn. Their occupation does reallyi nterest because a big question is - where did they get a fortune. I doubt they have been aurors, but that is really possible, though it wasn't mentioned in any of the books.

I don't belive JK ever mentions Harry's parents Jobs , the fortune they left for Harry could have come from one of their parents when they died they left their fortune to either JAmes or Lily depending on whose parents it was then when Lily and James were killed they left it to Harry.

well the WERE in the order.... They might have been Aurors. Remember in the first book when Ollivander says that Lily's wand was excellent for charm work? Maybe she did something that involved charms and enchantments Also, lily KNEW the ancient magic that saved Harry when Voldermort didnt so she must have studied ADVANCED magic..... James was very good with magic too. Top of his class. He was an animagus too.

Aunt Petunia probably didn't know if they had a job, if she didn't like getting involved into her sister's life. She just said those things so no one would suspect the Potters being witches/wizards. Our best guess is an Auror, but we don't know that many jobs.

Hmmm. This is a hard one to predict. We know that they were in the order, because of Moody's picture, but there are also other jobs. Shacklebolt and Arthur Weasley both worked for the Ministry, but also worked for the Order. So its possible that the Potters worked in the Order, but perhaps had another job as well.

Also, didn't the Potters inherit a lot of money?

They most likely did work in the Ministry, they could have been aurors, or held some other important job. I think Lily could have possibly been an Unspeakable.

For some reason I thought that they were Aurors... Hmm. But I'm guessing their jobs must have been something that was of some major importance in the ministry- look at all the money they left Harry... Then again, on that note, maybe they just had more money since they only had one child. I mean, Mr. Weasley could make a good salary, but since Mrs. Weasley doesn't work and they have so many kids, that could be why money is tight for them. Good question! I hope JK does let us know in HBP.

I think James' some kind of soldierf or the order.
you know, some sort of person who'd be there if there's an attack.
James as an unspeakeble sounds logical.
i dont know why.
Lily probably just like Molly, plain housewife.
she probably cooks for the members of the order.

I read a editorial on Mugglenet, that said James was a DADA teacher, and that Lily taught Charms. I though it made since.

I remember reading in one of the books that James had inherited money, it didn't say from who, and that he didn't need a large paying job. But that's all it said on that matter. I don't really remember which book or anything. But I have been re-reading all the books for the past week, so it could have been any of them. Most likely the third, or beginning of the fourth one. Well, yeah. That's all I have to say.

lily and james's profession has not yet been talked about. he was indeed too young to be minister of magic. they had money because james's father was rich. james inherited the money when his dad died.

I think you are right. We don't know their jobs. But aunt Petunia said that James didn't work. I think she didn't know but why she said that?? I agree that James inherited the money. His family is rich. May be Harry is a heir of Gryffindore.

Maybe Lily was a Potions teacher because it said in HPB that she was also very good at potions. I don't know about James though. Maybe he was an auror or worked in the Ministry.

Well.. they must have had an importand and well-paid job, because they left Harry quite a lot of gold.
