Interesting question. no telling what he was doing....probably instructing the ghost (as you said) and giving advice to anyone who asked for it. I bet he went to other portraits to see what was going on (if he can do that) but I'm not sure. Maybe he just stayed there and waited for the news.

I think he was in the "afterlife" waiting for Harry at Kings Cross. As for the portraits, i think they are more like a memory of a person that has died. It is not really them but they have the same personality, beliefs, and looks (obviously), as the person that has died.

Perhaps Dumbledore was watching Harry somewhere, not the portrait. His soul. he had been hoping for Harry to win since Harry had known the truth and experienced things enough to defeat Voldemort, Not just by using powers and magic. Dumbledore maybe had watched the Battle at a distance far from the world he had known before. Readying himself for the next adventure.

Maybe there's a side to Dumbledore we missed. He could have been in the afterlife destroying the ugly thing that could not be helped. (JKR said that it was the part of Voldie's soul hidden in Harry). Maybe he even had a huge bonfire party.

I think Dumbledore was waiting for Harry. He was probably instructing the ghosts, as you said, on what to do, but he was most probably waiting for Harry so he could give him the most valuable instructions Harry would ever take in his life.

I think he was wandering the halls of Hogwarts, dispensing advice as it was needed, and trying to keep an eye on his hero. Dumbledore is still, even in death, trying to protect and help Harry as much as possible.

Dumbledore was dead... His portrait was at Hogwarts, but, like linzeroo said, I think they're more of a memory, not really the person. He was gone.. To borrow a quote actually from Dumbledore (in the fourth movie)... "No spell can reawaken the dead, Harry. I trust you know that."
However -- Dumbledore is pretty amazing. So even though he couldn't help in the battle, I'm sure he was watching from somewhere! | |
