Yeah, that is a really great point.

I think it was partly to do with Lily, but we don't know that relationship at that time, so mostly it has to do with his relationship with Harry. Snape gave up his true nature just to protect the son of the woman he loved.

i never thought about it. but i was really impressed about snape. how harry said in the epilogue, he was the bravest person he ever met. but i remember that i read the book before one of my friends and she was calling snape names and i told her to shut up 'cause he is a very good person. after she read the book she was saying how much she likes him) i never expected him to be like that

I agree with Skiving Snackboxes, the eyes are the window to the soul, and Snape was looking in at pieces of Lily and James in Harry.
I also believe that he willed himself to think of Lily, that that was the cause of him telling Harry to look at him originally, and then he got more than he bargained for.

You know in Dumbledore's office were you see Snape's patronus when Dumbledore said 'after all this time' did he mean about his love for Lily or that he had grown to like Harry?

He meant about Snape's love for Lily. Even if Lily died and it was 16 years ago, Snape's love for Lily was ALWAYS there. Remember, Snape answered. "ALWAYS."Ü

And when Snape asked harry to look at him, He might have seen Lily not Harry although it was Harry who had been staring at him. Harry got his Mum's eyes, that's why i guess Snape never wanted to look at Harry in the eyes coz he sees Lily Through those wonderful things.

Just before he died, Snape wanted to see Lily's eyes for the last time. He died for her - trying to save her son.

I hadn't thought of it that way, and you make a very interesting point. I always thought Harry's eyes had a much bigger significance than that, but is there? I mean, his eyes don't actually play a role in the defeat of Voldemort, so that rules that out. But I just never thought Snape's having loved Lily so much that he had to use Harry's eyes as a substitute for the woman he loved was such a momentous part of the book. It was moving, yes. But it was never a central part of the plot. And I guess I imagined Harry's eyes playing a central role in the plot itself.

The first time I read it, I just thought that Snape wanted Harry to watch him suffer and die. I'm not really sure why... lol
But then after reading Snapes story, I think it was because he wanted to look into Harry's eyes because they are exactly like Lily's. Since he loved her,
he wanted her eyes to be the very last thing that he saw in his life.
So sad . . .

I smiled at your thoughts on Snape wanting to look at "Lily's" eyes. Good job. Yeah, I think that is a sweet way for Snape to pass on, looking at something her loved.

I agree: I think that Harry's eyes are important precisely because of Snape's love for Lily. And I agree that Snape willed himself to think of Lily that last time, because he knew he was dying, and he wanted to have something good to think of before he did.

I dont know why he said that but if it was because he wanted to look into Harrys eyes because they looked like Lilys then that was a little creepy lol
