15. Room The room was silence, where it had been treacherous chaos seconds before. Ron looking at Harry, Harry at Hermione, Hermione at Ron. Incredulity on Ron’s face (couldn’t believe they’d just done that), Harry grinning (enjoying having done that) and Hermione’s countenance the silhouette of lighting fast thinking.
“Brilliant,” Ron said.
Harry nodded.
Sitting there in the girl’s bathroom was the troll.
Looking at one another fear, excitement, courage all of it still rushing in them. They smiled before sharing the true gravity of the moment. It would go unspoken, because things like that don’t need words; their glances articulating everything.

“Oh my God,” Hermione exclaimed, laughing making the apology that followed somewhat less than believable.
“Not funny, Hermione,” Ron said, with egg on his face.
“Dunno mate, seems comical,” Harry said laughing.
“Have some Potato then,” Ron said chucking a spoonful of salad at Harry.
Harry ducked. The wad of salad landing on Draco’s smirking face.
“Nice shot mate,” Harry remarked.
When Professor McGonagall walked into the Great Hall a minute later, she ducked a lemon meringue pie. Breakfast had erupted into a food fight.
Under the table, Harry, Ron and Hermione laughed.
“You don’t like eggs, Ron?” Hermione grinned.

100. Homework
“I still feel guilty giving everybody homework,” Harry said.
“Yeah, but it’s fun homework,” Ron said before Hermione could reply.
“It’s DA work Harry it’s not really homework,” Hermione remarked.
They walked down the hall towards the common room.
“Yeah, practicing hexes is fun mate,” Ron said. “Especially since I told everyone you said we should try them on Slytherin’s.”
“Ron you didn’t?” Hermione asked.
“You don’t get credit if you’re caught though,” Ron added without remorse, “That way they practice their stealth skills too,” he said to Hermione’s back as she rushed off.
“Girls,” Ron and Harry said together.

How to quell the beast in his heart? That was the question Harry couldn’t ask. Behind him, Ron and Hermione were bickering about something. Harry was learning how to ignore it. Really, it was getting old.
The wind rushed past him. It was a surprisingly warm spring day. They had come up to the tower to catch the breeze and watch the lake.
“You’re being silly Ron,” Hermione said.
Harry looked down at the lake. There they were. The beast growled, chewing at his heart. Dean and Ginny were running down the pier holding hands, they jumped into the lake.

His heart it seemed to teem with love. He couldn’t bring himself to say it. Harry was right there. And if Hermione didn’t feel the same way about him? Clearly she didn’t not if she could ask that McClaggen bloke to go in his place.
Ron felt like breaking something.
“Everything all right won-won?” Lavender asked. She’d popped out of nowhere.
“Lavender,” Ron said kissing her on the lips.
A boy could get used to that.
From across the room, Hermione slammed her book startling Harry.
“I’m going to bed,” she said, and not waiting for a reply rushed away.

There was laughter from behind the stack.

Taking the book, Hermione marched over to Madam Pince.

“A side effect of x-tinguish,” the book explained, “is apathy. Complete, utter indifference to the object of one’s affections.”
Hermione was as close as she could be to hating Ron. How could anyone? With his crooked smile, that sweet, misguided temper of his. He was a masterful strategist too, though she’d never admit it, always countering her arguments.
“There you are,” Harry said, walking around the tree where they’d sit, by the lake.
No. Though it hurt her forever, Hermione could never bring herself to ever stop caring about Ron.

“It’s a country in the Balkans,” Harry said, and Ron nodded.
“No it’s not,” Hermione exploded.
“Geez Hermione calm down it’s just a book,” Harry said.
Hermione turned on the boy with a furious face, and walked off. Ron looked at Harry and they both shook their heads. Really, it was just a book.
Hermione however was not so much interested in the book as she was in not letting it fall into the wrong hands, because buried in it’s pages was a note. A note she’d written to Ron.

Harry and Ron sat by the fireside trying their hardest not to laugh. Enjoying their newly found friendship again, happy to be in each other’s company. Hermione was checking over her class notes while next to her a pair of knitting needles worked away at what the boys supposed were socks.
“Hermione do you really think any more house elves need clothes?” Ron asked.
She gave the boy a smile.
“Don’t be silly Ron, Hogwarts employs loads of house elves. I haven’t even started yet.”
Ron turned to look at Harry. They really didn’t have the heart to tell her.

The hour was late. The boys supposedly gone to bed, in truth Harry and Ron were on Ron’s four-poster playing chess unable to sleep. Hermione was alone crying in the common room. She hadn’t found the book despite looking all day. Scenarios ran through her mind each more horrid than the last of Draco or the Twins finding the note. When a house elf peeked out from under a chair cushion.
“Fancy that hiding a book here.”
Hermione lunged at the poor creature startling her as she took the book, “Oh thank you, thank you,” she said finding the note.

“They’re everywhere mate,” Ron said in a sing song voice, as Harry nodded stupidly, his attentions distracted by Cho Chang who waved at him as she walked past them in the hall.
Hermione sighed.
Boys could be so stupid. She understood about veela’s it wasn’t that so much that bothered her as the idea that Ron and Harry could so easily be swayed by them.
She clutched her books more tightly. Hermione hadn’t yet given him an answer. He wasn’t a boy that much was obvious. Viktor’s attentions weren’t so easily taken by pretty girls. He looked deeper than that.

He couldn’t believe it. Draco Malfoy had said it but Ron couldn’t believe it. Ron didn’t just feel angry, a wave of pure uncontrollable, rash fury swept over him.
Hermione had gasped audibly, along with the others, Harry looked a bit perplexed but angry as well, nothing Malfoy ever said was pleasant, and the twins were passing some secret message by their looks alone. Angelina, Katie, and Alicia were quick to hold them back.
Draco had called Hermione a mudblood.
Without thinking, without pause, only a desire to protect Hermione, Ron drew his broken, spell-o-taped wand and said, “Eat slugs!”

Hermione had said, “Vex, when something bothers you.” Right now, the thing vexing Harry was Ginny and Dean together, holding hands and kissing.
“Why did he care?” Harry tossed in bed.
Ron slept the slumber of angels, a doppy grin on his face. He’d called Hermione in his sleep.
Harry turned away pulled the covers, closed his eyes. He could see her more clearly. Ginny Weasley looking lovely in her Yule Ball dress, sharing his chocolate egg, throwing the quaffle, scoring the tie breaking goal as he caught the snitch; running into his arms as they won the House Cup.

The frizzy haired girl watched the red haired boy walk up to the stool. Hermione blew a strand of hair from her face. He was Harry Potter’s friend, she’d heard people talking about him, had read about him.
For some reason though the red haired boy caught her eye. “Really, dirt on his nose. Should be more careful … first day of school and all, have to make a good impression.”
“Gryffindor,” the sorting hat cried out.
She wondered if she’d get into Ravenclaw, she wanted to be around clever people but the red haired boy hadn’t been sorted there.

There was an almighty roar and Ron jumped out of his seat at the table. Seamus and Dean were laughing, Harry had bumped his head as he’d been bending over to pick up a fork, and Neville had fainted.
“Blimey!” Ron said, and turned to find Luna Lovegood wearing a lion’s hat on her head.
“I’m the announcer but I still want to root for you team Ron,” she said.
“Swell, Luna,” he said smiling.
She kissed him then.
“For luck,” and the lion’s hat roared again. However not as loudly as Hermione would later when she heard about it.

Hermione’s patronus was an otter. He was gamboling around the Room of Requirement, she was practicing as the others showed up.
“That’s a nice one, Hermione,” Harry said, and she turned around and smiled.
“Thank you.”
“Was that a weasel?” Dean asked as he walked in with Ron and Seamus.
“Wot?” Ron asked.
“It wasn’t a weasel, silly,” Seamus said, “It was a ferret.”
“Hermione’s patronus is a ferret?” Cho asked.
“You think she likes Draco?” Marietta asked.
“What?” Hermione and Ron both cried out.
“Well they say your patronus reflects some aspect of your personality. Like who you love.”

He remembered Sirius’s death, and now Dumbledore’s and for the first time in a long time, Harry Potter felt truly fearful. He couldn’t bear it if anything ever happened to her. Ron and Hermione would be with him, he could take care of them. Besides, the truth of it was he couldn’t stop them.
But if Ginny … he couldn’t bear to think it and it broke his heart.
“Everything all right mate?” Ron asked.
“I don’t think anything will ever be right again,” Hermione said.
Ron took her in his arms as she started sobbing. Dumbledore was gone now.

She knew why Harry had done what he’d done, but she wouldn’t give in to depression. The days they’d had together had been magical. Ginny sighed as she walked around the school. There was where they sat and talked for hours about everything, under that shady tree by the lake.
Ginny looked up. From that tower they had caught Ron fleeing Hermione’s bird attack. It had served him right saying that about Lavender after they’d already broken up. But he was just teasing.
“I’ll be brave, and wait,” she said, as tears rolled down her eyes. “I’ve waited before …”

“What are we doing here?” Ron asked.
Hermione with help from Harry pulled a giant book towards her.
“The note said, go look up love in the dictionary,” she said, handing Ron the note.
Harry turned the cover over and squashed his fingers under the heavy tome’s cover. Hermione covered his mouth to stifle his cry lest Madam Pince throw them out.
There under love was a picture of Hermione and a ferret in Slytherin robes.
She looked up to find a pack of Ravenclaw girls cackling madly behind a stack of books; Cho’s lackeys.
“Tha’s not funny,” Ron said.

Hannah Abbot was a mooch, but to catch her smooching Harry now that was something else. Ron and Hermione watched dumbstruck. Across one end of the hall Dean and Ginny were coming, the black boy chasing the upset Weasley. Down the opposite end came Ernie MacMillan.
“What the …” Ernie said.
It seemed like an eternity before they broke their kiss.
“Thanks for the quill back in class Harry. I’m so silly I’d forgotten mine.”
“A-a-a-nytime,” he said. Spotting Ginny he felt a rush of jealous anger as she walked into the Common Room smiling followed by an annoyed Dean.
(I had originally intended to call the thread Hogwarts 90210. *Fires the cannons* This is dedicated to my Cheeky, who’s so not a mooch, but she still gets all my smoochies.)

Ron wanted never to see thestrals, not that he could at the moment, for which he was grateful. Luna Lovegood looked at him as they were standing in London outside the red phone box that let in to the ministry. He was standing away from the group trying to catch his bearings.
“Are you all right, Ron?” she asked pleasantly as if inquiring about the weather.
It had been a wild ride.
“Yeah, I’m okay I guess,” he said shyly, blushing.
She took his hands in hers and gave it a squeeze.
“C’mon then,” Harry said, opening the phone box.

13. Quidditch
Harry watched as Ginny flew around the pitch passing the quaffle expertly, then getting it back then scoring against Ron. Which made him feel all kinds of funny. He wasn’t exactly happy that she’d scored against Ron, but he was very impressed at Ginny’s skills.
“He needs a little confidence doesn’t he?” Hermione said from where she was sitting next to Harry on the stands.
“Ron don’t … she’s faking left,” Harry said, and cringed as Ginny scored again.
“But you’ve got to love the way Ginny plays,” Hermione said.
“Yeah … you gotta love Ginny,” Harry said smiling shyly.
With this one something different. While it referst to the subject it isn't mentioned per se in the story ... but the rules don't specify that do they? *shrugs*

Draco was yodeling.
“And next time I’m going to add a tap dance, and a tutu to that,” Hermione threatened as she stalked off.
“Sometimes she scares me mate,” Ron told Harry.
“I know what you mean,” Harry said, he and Ron following after her.
They caught up with her.
“Hermione that was brilliant,” Harry said.
She blushed.
“I still think you should have let me punch him,” Ron pouted.
Hermione stopped, turned and hugged both boys.
Ron blushed and added, “I really woulda punched him good.”
Behind them they could hear Professor McGonagall, “Mr. Malfoy stop that at once!”

85. Snappish
Most of all, though he would never admit it, he missed her being snappish at him. Hermione had such a short temper with Ron and they were always arguing, which he liked, a lot. He and Harry sat on either side of her bed, as she lay there in bed petrified.
“It’s almost like she’s … gone,” Ron said, holding back tears.
“She’s going to be all right Ron,” Harry said with determination.
They had to find the heir of Slytherin and put a stop to this once and for all. They’d been lucky so far but for how long?

The little red haired girl had long curly hair, that on humid days was sometimes frizzy. She also had an insatiable curiosity and a need to know. Like what was in the box. She opened it, where it sat on her mother’s dresser, and it started to play a song.
He walked in.
“Daddy,” the little girl said.
“Hello sweetheart,” he replied.
“Who’s that in the picture?” she asked smiling.
He sighed, and grinned at the happy past.
In the photograph Hermione was jumping back startled as Ron showed her a snake, and Harry on the side laughed at them.
